Sega Master System for me. Thats what I grew up on. Shinobi, Space Harrier, Rastan Phantasy Star, a lot of classics. Both great systems as you said. Win, Win.

I had an NES when I was a kid... however it broke - as they tended to do - so it got replaced with a Master System! The MS Sonic games blew my mind back in the day!
Regarding the SMS FM sounds on Retron5: you can disable the FM sounds by going into the game settings menu and de-selecting it (you will have to do this EVERY time you play a SMS game). You will then get the standard US SMS sound output/tones. Retron5 seems to have the FM sounds as the default sound setup for all SMS games.
I own and collect for SMS since the late 80's. It's been in and out of my closet a dozen times and still works great, along with 3D glasses. I have about 80 games. And what I like about collecting for the SMS are the plastic cases. It's easier to me to collect a CIB for SMS games than the NES which had the cardboard boxes which are much harder to find.

To the Americans saying the NES had a better library, you didn't even have half the SMS games released in North America so you don't even know what games it had. Europe still had new SMS games until 1996. For example Streets of Rage 1+2, Mortal Kombat 1+2 were never released in the US or at least in tiny numbers.
Having grown up with both, the absence of either is like choosing which of my two hands to chop off. It's too painful to choose one over the other. So many good memories with both.
If NES hadn't had the basically illegal practices of you can't make games for other systems if you wanna make for ours SMS would've dominated. TMNT, Mega Man, Contra for example would've been great on SMS.
