You are making it very complicated. Instead of doing the end grain at the beginning, just make a long edge grain panel with alternating strips of dark and light wood with think strips of accent strips. And make an end grain of accent. Cut thin strips of accent and crosscut your edge grain panel. Assemble as end grain and you're done.
This what you are saying is another option to do this board but makes it absolutely complicated for someone with 12 or 13 inch planer. Btw thank you for comment and for watching 😉

@@rswoodland8162 I have a 13" planer and can do it. You can use your router sled to flatten.
