Honestly I like looking at the beginner one the most. It's not too dark, it's not an optical illusion in your face, and the design is just elegant and clean.
There is not really anything beginning over this, unless you happen to have a fully professionally equipped workshop to start with. But I agree, first one is the best.
I agree, been making cutting boards for about 12 years, made those fancy optical illusion ones and I've come to find out people like them but they dont seem to sell very well. the easy cleaner looking cutting boards go fast, and people want those ones more.
If I gotta be honest, I think Jordan's appeals the most to my tastes. Simple and clean. Sam's is lovely but it came out way darker than I anticipated. John's is a sweet design and build process but almost too mesmerizing, lol Great stuff guys!
I actually loved the first one that Jordan did...thought it looked good, and especially the touch of slanted sides so you don't even need extra handles! Great job Jordan!!! 😁👍
So what happens when you flip it to use the back side? Cutting boards have 2 sides! Personally I just want performance from my board, and all of these land on low performance. A cutting board has 1 job. To protect your knife. Here is a list of things cutting boards shouldn't be made from. Stone, glass, metal, hardwoods, or bamboo (technically a grass!) Here is a list of professionally accepted materials. Rubber, some soft plastics, and some softwood (hinoki, larch, spruce, yellow pine, etc) The goal when selecting a wood for a cutting board is a soft wood that isn't too soft and strong antimicrobial properties.
I personally love the simplicity from Jordan’s board it’s very calm. The others boards are a bit busy 🤗Sam’s board is my favorite. The dark wood and contrast gorgeous. John you did a great job!
Congrats to Sam, i think Johns personality and showmanship is rubbing off on him and his presentation and style are really coming together. Good boards all round guys
To have in my kitchen to actually use and see on a regular basis? The "beginner" one. Very simple but beautiful use of the colors and contrast. The other two would be nice novelty pieces to pull out when there's company for something overly fancy (which, honestly, we never do), but that would be it. They're all gorgeous, though. Well done gentlemen!
Going back and watching old videos. I realized I miss Jordan and Sam, I also miss these types of videos! The amateur, intermediate, and pro videos were the best.
I'll agree it's a commonly seen board type of superior construction. But I really think people need to move away from hardwoods for cutting boards. Hinoki, spruce, larch, or yellow pine are about all I will accept anymore. A wood needs to earn its place in my home by passing my bar exam! And it better test out between 500-900 on the janka scale while having strong antimicrobial properties. A cutting board isn't something you cook up in a ez bake oven with shop scraps. These are more like fancy serving boards. To which I'll take the mitered one because it's easy to carry, weighs less, and reminds me of surfing which also fits a beach theme which suits me.
Your guys are the only ones I have ever seen pushing material through a jointer without holding on to the material past the cutter. As a person that has been cut, that scared the crap out of me. Stay safe and keep making awesome vids! 😁
Sam your board was too dark in the end but the design is neat and clever. Jordan you chamfered at 27 degrees; Sam would approve of that, love the simplicity of yours. Mamma would be chopping parsley about 9 days earlier than waiting for the other two to finish their fancy layouts. John yours is immense in all ways and perfect for the Zen cook that has to contemplate the very nature of infinity as they chop. C'mon make part 2 of this where you inlay them all into each other and spiral off the edge of the universe....
I wouldn't let my Nigara homono tsuchime migaki 165mm kiritsuke nakiri with custom western grip in green turquoise touch any of those boards. Ya it's a long name! Might be longer than the title I gave it! Aōmigame (green sea turtle) - Turtle of the kitchen realm, protector of the sheeple, lord of the push chop, warden of vegetable prep, defender of julienne.
Great video. All the way through from something a novice could manage (with the great instruction provided), to more and more complex builds. Thanks guys, great job.
I really enjoy the 3 way videos... My favorite moment.. Jordan's wet comment and then Sam. Jordan your fired! LOL This could be like South Park. Every episode Jordan gets fired and keeps coming back..
and to the people saying Sams was too dark. 1. I dont see that as a bad thing at all, and 2. you're not supposed to copy his exact wood choice or stain. You can do the exact same thing he did and leave it lighter. YOU have the option.
i like the way the way use the wood and the glue and the way you put the hole thing together it was just a really good video and i learnt a lot from this video thank you guys.
and you are the best in woodworking no your just lucky to have a huge shop and a u tube channel to put down people who work in small shops trying to get ahead big shot
“BuT YoU hAVe AlL ThEM TooLs!!!” They said like 5 times “we only have this but you could also use x, y, z instead.” Do you expect them to go out and get worse tools just to make a point.
Worse tools? No, but how about less tools. A beginner wouldn’t have a planner or a jointer. I’ll give them a pass on the table saw, and the miter saw, but even still. A beginner might have either a table or miter.
@@theerickstone If you don't have a planer or a jointer, or handplanes and a bench, then cutting boards are probably not something you should be doing if you want it done right, IMO.
Oh my goodness!!! That last one was ridiculous! When you showed the top view of the last one, if looked like a pillow, like it curled over the sides!!! You and your friends did a great job on these boards!!!!!
I like Jordan’s the best. Sometimes simplicity is best. Love those clean contrast lines. I like Sam’s but that endgrain got sooo dark with the finish. I’d be afraid to use John’s cuz I’d get dizzy staring at that pattern and probably cut my finger off.
Jordan's is good for a serving board. Hardwood makes for inferior cutting boards that hurt knife edges. I'd rather buy a yoshihiro hinoki board 1.25" thick version, or the larchwood endgrain boards. Much better on the knives and both have strong antimicrobial properties. That being said the best cutting board in existence might be the Parker Asahi boards. A proprietary mix of rubber and sawdust! Fully self healing, sandable, they even have antimicrobial ones, and all are gentle on the knife. Another goo brand, but mostly for slicing is the Hasegawa cutting boards. They are a plastic cutting board with pure rubber surface and wooden core for lightness. But the kind of grab the blade, so are best for slicing. If your ever in a sushi joint and look across to the cutting boards. It's pretty much always a Hasegawa, Asahi, or Hinoki wood cutting board you will see.
I am Not a woodworker, but, back in the day, we had wood shop in school. Even I built a level 2 cutting board with 5 types of wood in that class. It turned out great, I gave it to my mom for mothers day. I'm 53 now. When my mom died 4 years ago, I got it back, and, I still use it. If you use them, they will last. Can't leave them laying around getting dried out.
My vote is Sam for the win. Nice job from everyone, but that walnut displays technique, experience, and has a lot of natural character. Great job to all!
Great job you guys. Jordan, I like that you took a little extra time explaining. Sam, your board is my favorite, I just wish you’d gone into just a little bit more detail. agree
There is not really anything beginning over this, unless you happen to have a fully professionally equipped workshop to start with.
But I agree, first one is the best.
It's a crisp piece of work. Sam's board is great, John's is masterful (and I'm a fan of Mondrian) but Jordan's board is elegant.
But the other two are better boards. End grain is much better for knives
I agree, been making cutting boards for about 12 years, made those fancy optical illusion ones and I've come to find out people like them but they dont seem to sell very well. the easy cleaner looking cutting boards go fast, and people want those ones more.
I need better quality scrap wood.
Don't we all.
My first thought lol
I'm pretty sure beginner woodworkers don't have scrap exotics lying around.
@@StArFuRyZz you can use other woods
Right, "gonna be using some scrap wood" pulls out purpleheart
I personally like Jordan’s more. Sams was to dark and John’s was to busy. They all looked awesome but sometimes quick and simple is the way to go lol
Yeah but after 5 years of use, Jordan’s will be stained while the walnut one will still be the same colour

Fancy seeing you here. Sam’s was #1.
1st one was the best!
"It's going to be scrap wood from around the shop" Pulls out a pieces long enough to frame a small house.
Jordan won... hands down!!
Sam's Board was the best. The size was good, it was end grain so won't warp or gouge, and there was a nice subtle pattern to it.
