- As the cold season is approaching us this classic Norwegian black metal song is a great fit. I am really into Emperor these days and their "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" album is probably my favorite.
This song was very challenging to record. First of all Trym Torson blast beats and double bass drumming is not easy. The original was recorded without a click and the tempo is constantly going up and down.
The typical chaotic black metal sound didn't help either to hear clearly what is going on.
It is not perfectly played and has some hiccups here and there but is an honest performance for this iconic song.

remember how old this stuff is and how good this band was and still is. Trym such a great great drummer. the man with his office chair.
I was blown away by Nightside Eclipse and still remember the anticipation we were waiting with when Reverence showed up. The full album was/is a masterpiece!

@@behindthen0thing525 I mean that many drummers today can learn and play this (and many other old school) song through "flawlessly", but it might not sound and look natural for the drummer to play, but forced and stiff. Krimh just fucking breath's old school metal drumming and he also nails all the modern stuff like nobody else. You know?

This song is a legit stamina test. If any drummer can pull this song off, kudos to you. Completely nailed this Krimh! Jaw dropping talent!
Seeing you play this the "traditional" way (say, no double stroke techniques) with just plain strength and endurance is nothing but admirable.

... And if you think that Trym's studio performance was astounding, check out Emperor's 1999 Emperial Live Ceremony (DVD / VHS), and THAT version of Ye Entrancemperium. Guy's fucking nuts.

Old mans child is so groove based and smooth technicals. I can’t remember all the details but didn’t Galder basically write it all and kept firing drummers who couldn’t play all his fancy hat work? Idk but OMC is lowkey great. I love Dimmu too but it’s like I don’t hear much love for OMC

What amazes me, too, is that this record came out in 1997, with no blast beat or double bass guides online or anything like that (to my knowledge). He, Frost, Hellhammer, and others, they kind of just...figured it out.
Horgh was taught this, while being in Immortal.
Blast beat and double bass was nothing special at that time. Pete Sandoval did it in Morbid Angel in '89 or the band Nile, way before '97. Nothing special at that time
@@kipnugget3838 Please read my comment again. I didn't say blast beats were new. My point was that several of these drummers were most likely self-taught, which is amazing given how difficult it is to play drums to this style of music.
@@johnzackarias11 Probably they were. I've been to a George Kollias clinic some years ago and what he told us, that his inspiration came from Igor Cavalera. He learned to play that fast, only by ear. he didn't had a teacher from which he learned extreme drumming. Only the basics. Also the swivel technic he does came by accident. For him it was easier to play double bass that fast.
Trym is a beast. He's one of the few drummers that has a great signature, stands out from the crowd. Its cool to see him play this one too I saw in one video where he rests his left arm on his leg when he's blasting, was a good tip. Let me qualify that, Trym sits very low. Awesome cover I bet he sees it.

Yup, total quality stuff - I remember when Imperial Ceremony Live came out I was totally blown away by Trym's drumming on that - especially Ye Entrancemperium! - It just didn't seem possible - I wore out the VHS tape! - Fantastic cover! 👍

You are absolutely right - Trim's work on this track is quite raw, with flaws and inaccuracies. With a floating rhythm. However, Trim Thorson is a great drummer, no doubt about it. And Emperors wouldn't be Emperors without him. His parts are magnificent, pretentious, exciting, symphonic... And the album turned out and for this they can be forgiven for any sins. "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" for me is the perfect, the best symphonic black metal album ever. All over the planet. There is nothing more worthy to represent our Earth in the intergalactic hit parade and, probably, will not be. Your performance here and now is beyond praise. Fabulous!

Wow! Amazing cover, nailed it. Trym is one of the most original and creative drummers in the extreme metal genre and I love the fact its not recorded to click - the tempo fluctuations take the music to the next level. I can't imagine how difficult it was to learn - amazing job.

Man I'm so impressed with this one. Keeping up with all the tempo changes and weird transitions in this song must require so much work. Covering songs that were recorded that way is a nightmare. But as always you did an amazing job and were 100% accurate and with the song from beginning to end. Good to hear a drum cover of a song from such a fantastic album.

@@KRIMHDrummer lol. Combine no click, with 90’s analog recording technology, which made covering up mistakes almost impossible without having to retrack the whole song and you’ve got yourself an infuriatingly hard composition to recreate. 😅
