    I just binge-watched this whole series, and I have to say, that was a more brutal conclusion than any HBO series I've ever seen. I feel like a beloved character was suddenly ripped away. I so thoroughly enjoyed watching both of your glee in this restoration, and you both accomplished so much. Watching it dashed on the ground in an instant so close to its completion was seriously wrenching and physically jarring. I gotta go walk it off!

    • @TheJunkymagi
      @TheJunkymagi 3 роки тому +5

      Yeah, me too, noticed that there wasn't a part 10 part way through watching this one... wondered why... the reason was really hard to watch...
      For such a thick casting, I was wondering if they could set it back upright, set the broken piece on top, then plot out cutting 2 inch wide flat spot through where it's broken, use two 1 inch thick steel plates bolted to the ends of the broken pieces by drilling and tapping several holes in that cast iron, edges of the 1 inch steel plates stick out so those can be bolted together to hold the top in place, put the pulley shaft in for reference then shim the steel plates to hold it in the exact right spot....then welding the edges of the two steel plates so they cannot shift while the hammer is operating.... I know it's a LOT of fiddling work but it's the only way I see it's possible to fix such a huge borked up cast iron giant...
      Don't know if my explanation comes through clearly and feel free to laugh if you want but I had to try to help even though I have very little machining experience...

    • @dogsarebest7107
      @dogsarebest7107 3 роки тому +3

      @@JohnDoe-ce2wl No, I think you're mistaken. That's mostly for fixing cracks on solid (not broken into multiple pieces) castings, like an engine block. It works for sealing up a crack so water or oil doesn't leak out, not for repairing a 6" thick casting broken in half. They work by compressing the surrounding casting with screws overlaid on screws, and not applicable here (that I've seen).
      You'd need to get that casting up to >400F, all of it, all 2000 pounds or however much the bare machine frame weighs, and all the pieces, find a way to fixture all of them, grind half of the thickness of the spine out, then lay in some LFB. Then grind out the other half of casting until you reached LFB, and fill that in. You'd need some BIG equipment, big torches, a furnace large enough to heat 2k pounds of cast iron up, a way to fixture, and tens of pounds of LFB. Prolly burn through 2000cf of oxygen alone with a BIG tip. And probably burn through hundreds of pounds of propane to fire up a forge / kiln large enough to preheat and postheat that casting. It would be weeks of work I think, and if you're off by 1/8" over the 7' tall it is, you'd have to do it again.
      Pretty much impossible. Though I'd attempt it laying in some 91ni with tig, or even ercusi. For $100/hour. Should only take 40+ hours. Of keeping that casting at hundreds of degrees and somehow not dying yourself ;)

      I think he was just trying to keep it from falling over. As heavy as that is if the power hammer is only at say a 5 degree tilt he probably could've stopped it from falling. Once it was truly too far to stop he back off a bit. Still so sad and scary though.

Please continue to dream and move towards towards making them happen how to make something to how to fix a broken tool, you are really talented and by moving forward learning how to make your dreams come true you will become Great.

    I was just getting caught back up with this series. I was so sad to see what happened to the hammer, I sadly know that feeling of having tools become more than just a tool with all the history, blood, sweat, and tears that go into keeping them alive or in your case restoring them only to have something like this happen.
    I'm happy that everyone is safe, there was a really scary frame or two where Will looked close then he was.
    Truly heartbreaking.

    bad stuff Will, but not the end of the hammer i see two nice locating grooves / channels on the sides of that boss strap it bolt it job done you could put a few studs in for accurate location the section of steel in the grooves would probably add up in tensile strength build a kiln around it for pre heat , more importantly slow cooling and weld it up big job but highly viewable . i have seen massive repairs in cast iron holding up to huge stresses for hundreds of years ! the old saying s..t happens and it just did .you can fix it no worries . good luck .
