Alec Steele Blacksmith 2019 - Розваги
I know its primarily a forging channel, but the fixing, machining, and business stuff is intriguing as well.
That’s mostly what I come for
I also agree, its all good to me
Check out this old Tony. He’s a big machining channel. Tons of humor and a lot of quality work on his videos. There’s machining and fixing and just talking in all of his videos
@@salbuscemi1729 TOT is the friggin' best.
When was it primarily a forging channel? 🤣 I thought this was the Setting up a Workshop and Power Hammer Restoration Show!
Man, this channel is becoming a fixing power hammers channel and I absolutely love it. These videos are the best!
Yeah I am not a black Smith, nor have I ever actually worked metal. But I can't get enough of this channel, or the repairing of these big amazing/old machines.
I kept thinking there was going to be an update to will's power hammer getting broken. Like, surprise! Actually we *ARE* gonna fix it!
Agreed
Also a power hammer assassination channel.
@@graeme.davidson Oof it still hurts
50 years from now, some up and coming blacksmith "there's some kind of rubber matting under here, I'm sure it's very specific matting, I'll use this bog standard rubber matting until I find the right matting"
lol
“I’ve got a corkscrew to make”, flexing on Will’s inability to successfully forge a spiral.
Tbf, will is a technically a bladesmith who can do some blacksmithing (he does seem pretty competent at it from what we've seen previously here in this channel), while Alec is a blacksmith who can do bladesmithing.
@@graciouscompetentdwarfrabbit yeah, I know. They’ve both got their separate areas of expertise. I was just messing a little bit. Looking forward to following Will in his own shop in the new year.
This makes me feel a lot better yeah he can make damascus (which still eludes me) but I can forge a corkscrew (and I can actually do it better than Alex who starts it with tongs CHEATER)
The power hammer in the US has giant googly eyes. This one needs a giant mustache for several reasons.
Haha so funny
Also a hat. For reasons, of course.
And a sickle painted somewhere, 'cause you know... the hammer's there.
@@Anino_Makata lmao
And a ushanka on it somewhere for reasons of course
Alec: How am I supposed to lift this block.
RUssian mechanic: (Takes drag off cigarette) you vill need 2 Ivan's, maybe a Sergei.
This joke made me laugh so hard!
and the power of some slavic squat
This brought tears to my eyes 🤣🤣🤣
Exactly what I was thinking...
Or a Uri . Seen a Uri in action omg they are good blokes
Sees title: *immediate horror flashbacks*
Ok matt
Hopefully the past will not be repeated
Thankfully this one appears to be a bit less top heavy.
Sees Alec maneuvering said power hammer by himself: *throw up a little*
@@smashyrashy hi see and sub
It's been cool to see Alex go from being hesitant to open up a power hammer at all to being fairly proficient in diagnosing and repairing power hammer issues.
I agree, he's come a long way in the power hammer area
Russian Power hammer not need puny rubber matting to do job. Just throw in engine gasket and torque down. = Stronk hammer.
Use vodka
Instead of oil
@@elijahbrunson2272 lol
@@elijahbrunson2272 no you use the vodka instead of electricity

When its done. he need to paint it whit Adidas stripes.
If its Russian, my guess is that that rubber part can be replaced with some commonly-available sturdy rubber stuff. My bet would be old tires.
Remember, the USSR wasn't about up-selling spare parts etc. It was about making things simple, functional and field-repairable.
Agreed
You are on the right track. 3ply conveyer belt material . Rubber and cording. Definitely has the thickness probably needed. Almost the same as what they use in bias ply tires. Just in flat sheets.
Fixing the Stanko
Niet, hammer is fine, just needs more vodka.
Wills cries of pain can still be heard echoing around the world

While most of us are dreaming (trying too) to have a place to do some metal work you are build your second shop in another country being a international man of blacksmithing 007 of wack wack. It is awesome to have watched you from shipping contained shop to this shop than to Montana and back to you old shop for a second shop. Keep you the great work and show us all how you can build a empire from a hobby.
The matting looks like a piece of conveyor belt that has been repurposed. Conveyor belts are quite robust.
I was thinking the same
i thought it looked like asbestos material. if it is asbestos he needs to be careful,
I thought it was leather
And it really is
Wish i had read this comment before posting mine. Now I feel silly for saying the same thing.

I am thinking this needs a paint job bright red with a hammer and sickle.
yes, as well as a mustache
@@kaiirossbaird7623 Yes that too.
Comrade Stanko
I'm sure with certain people that could cause just as bad outrage as a swastika and a short mustache decoration.
@@aakos26 You bet! Communism killed more people than nazism, but somehow it seems to be getting popular again these days... humans are a weird species, we never learn from mistakes.
Alex, I’m glad that business is booming and you can have another shop across the pond.
As an electrician, I would pull new motor leads. the amount of vibration that thing has is going to eat that cable up coming out of that metal plate. Potential arc to ground and damage to the motor. I would also not use a cable. If it was mine, I would use pipe and pull regular wires up inside. Forge scale and cable = potential for failure down the road from melting the cable. Other than that, it's nice to see it smashing metal!!
As a sparky as well I would recommend the same. This power hammer is a beast and needs to make sure the electrics can hold up to the day to day usage Alec will put it through.
Alec please get a sparky in to do electrics, you said it yourself your not an electrician so let a professional make sure it is up to the task. I'm sure with your following there is a local electrician that would be keen on helping you out, I know I would but wrong country lol
No need to pay anyone to do simple repairs. It will be fine.
@@KipdoesStuff simple repairs often involve substandard workmanship and quality. No one thinks about suitability for the long term, only what works now.
Spend the time and money wisely on someone who has done their time who knows what they are doing so you don't have to revisit the same problem in short order - best case. Worst case electric shock.
10:38 "some funky stuff going on" truly the slavic way.
So glad to see you uploading so often, love the content as always
That matting looks like graphite-impregnated, fiber-reinforced 5mm gasket material; its 4mm now, after getting the borscht pounded out of it for 30 years. The Stanko looks to have been the recipient of a ton of informal maintenance and upgrade procedures over the years, but its still got a ton of life left in it. I know that Alex can get it back into the best shape it can be, it might take a little while. Great video and Happy New Year, Alex!
Which means more videos for us!

I know this is a forging channel but the fixing of industrial machines is super satisfying.
Honestly I love the fixing machines episodes they are some of my favorite to watch.
"I've got a christmas gift to make - a medieval sabre for my niece!"
lol
This power hammer has a sign of “high quality” on it’s side (a pentagon with a partial star and the «СССР» word in it). Thus, no surprise it still runs just fine. All it’s problems are a result of neglect.
“Comrade, you do not make this tool to last you will be send to gulag”
In my experience with soviet machinery it is usually a lack of basic maintenance so i completely agree with that, but I did not know about that mark. I'll keep it in mind the next time I look for sovielt tools. Thanks for the tip!
Всё равно желательно заглянуть и посмотреть что там с цпг... Нормальное обслуживание никто не отменял =)
"Soviet Made" and "High Quality", the funniest contradiction in terms ever XD
@@johnnycanuck250 really depends on what it is.
I love seeing teardown and repairs of old machines like this.
I've enjoyed the fixing of the machines , just as much as your forging 😊
I was expecting that when you opened it up there would be another smaller power hammer inside it.
HaHaHaHaHa nice!! 😂
I agree with Hilsen. This guy deserves something for his expertise.
Semi truck mud flaps really tough material. Can often find laying in the road. Hand saw good way to cut.
I used them too.
The best use one was on a snowblower. Used as swipes
and for the paint job, you so need to go for a Soviet Naval paint scheme. They used a greenish anti-fouling paint for below the waterline and that flinty grey color up top.
Pick a fleet number for her and color that star in with red and gold.
I am enjoying seeing all the hand forging without the power hammer, reminds me of when I started watching

i was looking through the comments specifically to see if anyone noticed this as well. first time i wasn't sure if it was rubber making that sound or not. second time i almost cried laughing so hard
Happy Near Year to you and your family - stay safe and can't wait for the next video!
Love all the content coming out recently! Thanks for all the hard work!
The special rubber mat under the sal-block looks a lot like a cotton reinforced rubber conveyor belt. Someone should know the right thickness, hardness, and number of reinforcement plies.
Anyone else get anxiety when he first stuck his arm under this thing
Nope, it was blocked up fine.
I've been enjoying watching you setup this new workshop, the fixing the hammer bits, the various parts about tooling you have to make etc.
Wow Jamie! We were impressed with the hanger blows synched to music. But changing the playback speed so the ratchet is in tune with the music is a whole other level. Amazing!
When you said "corkscrew" I imagined something a little less murder-weapony.
I'll take one. 🤫
I took one look at that and was thinking the same thing.... That poor cork
That power hammer looks incomplete without a red star painted on it's side!

Yep.👍😂
I would have used several layers of the rubber matting. Just saying.
Always great to see you working on a project whether it be a power hammer or a corkscrew.
Never a dull day for you Alec.
Happy New Year when it comes and all the best for 2021 😃👍
"stanok", not "stanko". and this word means "some machine".
actually this is "molot", that exactly means "hammer".
Except of course that Stankoimport was the major brand of Soviet made machine tools sold to other places - and is generally called Stanko in short. ;) Fine machines, too, afaik.
СТАНОК це STANOK!
Yeah, but "Stank-o" is more entertaining
You have it right,comrade. Molodets!
@@Zonkotron there are some word formation rules in russian: Stanok + Import => Stanok shortens to Stank (to prevent vowel O going after another O, "StanOkO" doesn't sound good), then you add "o" as a connecting element then you add the second part. Goes with everything, but sometimes it uses "e" (reads as "yeh") instead of "o".
For example: shipbuilding.
Ship - Korabl, building - stroenie. Korabl-e-stroenie.
But i get the point why it called Stanko in the west =)
Unfortunately MA4129A doens't have any fancy name like Pilkington, Jones & Shipman, Kellenberger or Anyang. It's just MA4129A.
If you only had a fork lift certification! Could have used it here. Still holding out for that shirt. 😄
Comrade Alec, in Soviet Russia Stanko forges you!
Seriously though I get a real kick watching you dissect these old machines analyzing their problems and flaws and bringing them back into proper working order and then making more cool stuff.
I love this more calm take of a making a video, it just seems more genuine. even if it's he's 100% genuine all the time, this just makes it sound better
In the future, please make a damascus crowbar

That matting looks like Leather, not rubber.
I thought it looked like rope cord
it looked like the matting had a 'woven core' to it, but yes, it Could be leather
Love seeing you confront the problems and working through them. Power Hammer repair is awesome!
I feel like alec is always just fixing things. and I love it. Alec figuring things out and fixing them. Alec needs a series where he goes to blacksmiths workshops and tries to fix things. like a wandering blacksmith handyman. love the show alec!!!!
Just give it vodka its Russian it will be as good as new
You keep saying "stanko". I have a feeling it's "Stanok" or in russian "станок" which translates "machine tool" or "machine"
"Stanko" is short for "Stankoimport" ("Станкоимпорт", literally "import of machine tools") - the name of a USSR ministry tasked with import/export of machine tools. It became sort of a brand for most of the USSR exported machine tools.
This was super satisfying to watch.
I enjoy all the vids, but I for some reason especially like the shop setup and tool repair videos.
Russian power hammer not need capitalist paint job!
Except if it has to participate in the glorious parades!
I haven't been this early to anything lol
hey man, I've been on the way side, doing my own things, I come back and you are curling a thin piece in a way I've never expected before.
You've grown, as slow and steady (as it is in life), I hope you can see your skill has leveled up.
Hi Alec I love your videos and I am receiving a 2 x 72 kit grinder tonight I just wanted to say keep up the good work you’re my biggest inspiration to be a knife maker I am at 12-year-old blacksmith/blade smith and I started when I was 11 i’m so excited every time you post a video
Thanks for the content. Glad you're able to visit home. Have a great year! KANSAS USA
Keep up the hard work man.
Happy early New Year Alec!
I love old soviet machinery - a must, living here in the former union states - but the main issue with them is, is that there has always been a mechanic before you. I guess that's an issue everywhere with old machinery but as it happens to be, not every worker in the soviet union took good care for the equipment they didn't even own.
My favourite alec videos are the mechanical restoration video
It's fun watching you fix stuff and figure it out in real time. Glad everything is going pretty smooth. Stay safe buddy. Happy New Year.
Your sponsor time is the best explanation always. Thx brother.
Love your videos man. Really inspiring me to start my own UA-cam channel, doing some welding and blacksmithing. Need one of your anvils tho
Alec Steele, massive tool Repair Specialist. Love it.
I am so excited to watch this new series. I wish I could fly over and try to help you fix and clean up that beast of a powerhammer😂
Editing is superb as always. Golf-clap for Jamie.
maybe a eningelift, for removing car enginges, would be a nice addition to the shop
Loved the music during the install....perfect.😎
I absolutely love this content. Ny favourite show as a kid was how it’s made and this has a feeling like that. I’m never going to get my hands on these kinds of machines and to be able to explore each ones eccentricity is so fun. Can’t wait for more
I miss the old intro where you welcomed ladies and gentlemen back to the workshop 😔
Been following your channel pretty constantly for the past month or two now and as an aspiring carpenter I'm amazed by metal work and yours and Will's stunning work. Thanks for all the great content and happy new year to you Will and all behind the scenes
Oh and yugo
Looks like a great power hammer, I hope you can get some great forging done with it.
Making the best of your situation with a slight smile....it’s like you are a native Montanan!!
Alec,
I would use conveyer belt material to replace the original dampening gasket on your power hammer, that stuff is dame near indestructible.
Thanks Alec for this video. 👍😁
Congratulations, Alec! You %100 percent solved that sow block issue the same way the maintenance engineer in the forge where this hammer originally lived would have.... perhaps with a little less swearing, and vodka.
I kinda dig the Alec Steele in the UK style. It seems more personal again. It made me watch again every time while before i only watched one video every so often
Soooo happy that old school Alec is back
Love these videos. Glad that it looks like the most complicated part is done.... For now! XD
You got this!
I know nothing about forge hammers, but many STANKO machine tools, milling, lathes etc came into the UK circa 1970/80 via a bartering system or correctly named "factoring", whereby UK machine tool manufacturers could only sell to the USSR by accepting items as trade. Roubles were not internationally traded, so goods were exchanged, from shoes to hydraulic jacks, and machine tools.
Great vlog Alec.
Thanks for sharing.
Been looking forward to this!
Alec...I absolutely LOVE how energetic you are when fixing these things...and when forging.
Its really wonderful seeing a young man love his career path as much as you do....if only more would be like you...this would be a great world....keep up the good work, and I hope to see you train others in this same field, and way of life
If you repaint the power hammer you should take it back to it's original paint job it had in the USSR, would look super cool.
