Gnoggin, hosted by its creator Lockstin, is a show delving into the mysteries of Pokemon! (and other games sometimes too). Explaining everything there is to explain! Why is each Pokemon given the type it has? What are their origins? What is the lore of the Pokemon world and the design inspirations? And what does it all have to do with alchemy? Let's Go find out! - Ігри
"Thunder" was chosen over "Lightning" for the initial translation of the moves in English primarily because of character space limitations and like the Pokemon name "Feraligatr" has been retained for legacy reasons instead of being corrected. Plus as stated, "Thunder" sounds cooler.
another thing is (which is add on)
thunder and lightning go hand in hand
so when you hear/read the title/name
you'll know what it is
That's also why they kept the Japanese name for Gyarados instead of changing it to the English name they already had planned, "Skullkraken".
@@machina5 Yeah, Skullkraken is a pretty metal sounding name but would've been way too long.
Someone gets it
Neeerrrrdddd
the most important thing i gathered from this is that Zekrom, Reshiram and Kyurem underwent some sort of natural nuclear Fission reaction that split them in three. That just sounds real damn cool
MyNameIsRedundant so you‘re telling me the og dragon splitting for the brothers and causing a terrible war afterwards is Pokémon Chernobyl?
Does that mean the Original Dragon was Dragon/Nuclear-type?
of course in the region based of New York they would make the Manhattan project into Pokemon
@@thewonderdoc2999 my god
OH MY GOD IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!
I feel like Eerie Impulse is more of a reference to those old ghost hunting shows where "ghostly" sounds are usually associated with devices that detect electromagnetic fields.
4:33 Before anyone thinking the guy is kicking other guy for dropping the kid, he isn’t. He’s kicking the door trying to get it disconnected from that person that’s stuck holding on to the door due to electrical current. It can forces your muscle to grasp instead of letting go.
Thank you. I was so confused at what was happening
Good instincts. But I was SUPER confused and I played it back like 5 times lmao

Now I want cake.
Im fairly certain he did that on purpose to make people jump on him for it.
I misread dulge as "bulge"
Oh, so it wasn't me going insane. thank god.
The whole "Catastropika" thing GENUINELY bothers me.
Why didn't they go with "Pikatastrophe"?! It was GENUINELY, RIGHT THERE!!!
wait that sounds so much better why didn't they do that??
@@Hidden_Fern I don't know, but then again they're the same people that named a move "Baddy Bad". ROFL
Cintrón Productions lmao true
That would sound like Pikachu received an award for its tool assisted speedrun.
And Fairly Odd Parents already did Abracatastrophe which is what the move would've been if Abra had gotten it.
because Alola and tropical/tropika? idk

Bolt Beak "The user stabs the target with its electrified beak."
*animation attacks with the tail*
Considering its a signature attack you'd think they would have given it a unique animation, or even one just relating to the beak...
Yeah but it's sword and shield so it can't be better then a gen 3 level of animation
@@yonatanevron2428 That's really something that annoyed me with this game, fine whatever the 3DS models are future proof!
But at LEAST give these unique signature attacks (including G-Max) unique animations!
G-Max Sandaconda is supposed to shoot sand but instead it digs underground...
@@NagaYamiyo there are more then enough videos that show exactly how much effort went into these animations...when a cutscene with a legendary pokemon is having it moonwalk 180 degrees in order to turn around, then you know something is wrong with this game (not to mention that I thought the story of the game was stupid and very poorly written)
@@yonatanevron2428 It's a damn shame... I finished the Pokémon around 100hrs and I haven't touched the game since.

How about a move for Jolteon and other spikey electric bois? Call it Electro Needle: The opponent shoots electrified needles at the opponent. The strength doubles every time it hits in succession.
Why? Because the more needles get stuck in the opponent the more electricity is conducted and the more it hurts!
It could give the lightning rod ability/ make electric type attacks never miss as a secondary effect
so its pin missile but its electric...ITS GENEOS
pikachu and it's clones would be the only ones to learn it because game freak.
Base power might be 5 the reason is because if it hits 5 times it has 155 power with 95 accuracy, if the hit misses then it goes back to 5
wabbit jevil I think it should be Jolteon's signature move.
When hackers replace the Pikachu models with Wailords for his signature moves

3:17 - Fun fact: In some of DnD editions, sound-based attacks deal thunder damage.
In others it is renamed to sonic damage...
It's still lightning damage in 5e I'm pretty sure
There’s both thunder and lighting damage

It's still the most powerful. Zap Cannon and Volt Tackle have 120 power while Bolt Strike has 130.
@@BigAl2-u7e yeah but it's totally messed up editing wise because it shows zekroms base stats (which are the highest base stats of any electric pokemon though lol)
Electric types are so cool...once I wanted to be an electrical engineer but I’m really bad at physics and math even though I enjoy learning about them...
I remember seeing HoodlumCallum’s video where an Onix was using Plasma Fists via Mimic. The game was glitching as a result.
I’m pretty sure Charge Beam boosting special attack is tangentially referencing the Law of Conservation of Energy, which states that energy is never lost or gained in a reaction. With charge beam, it’s a far more literal translation of what using an electric type move would be. If you didn’t use all your energy, like with a comparatively weak attack like Charge beam, you would have some energy left over, giving you a special attack boost.
my favorite thing about lockstin and gnoggin is that he talks about pokemon and lets you learn science at the same time
21:45 Thunderbolt in Japanese is 100,000 Volts (10 10-Thousand Volts literally). Not 10,000 Volts.
What do you mean
@@maganhassan2627 The Japanese name for the move Thunderbolt is 10まんボルト(100,000 Volt), which まん is 10,000.
@@cychan.tkd.krt_ how do you make 100,000 sorry I got lost there lol
10 = 10
まん(man) = 10,000
ボルト(boruto) = volt
I think I know how Pikachu could learn electroweb. Instead of having a sticky wet covered in electricity, it’s a web made of positive electrons to attract the enemy Pokémon to those electrons like a magnet. I don’t think it’s the best explanation but it’s the one I came up with.
a VERY NICE video finally. I have started playing games as an electric gym leader to add challenge since the newer games are so *static*. This *strikes* me as helpful, that one move to change their type move to electric slipped my mind as a perfect combo for lighting rod

21:47 Oh. Cool, now I understand why Red's Pika (most creative nickname ever) used the attack "10.000 Volt" in the final stand-off against Giovanni in the Pokédex Adventures Manga. It was just an error in translation. That's why you should always have a proofreader who is very knowledgeable in the field in question.

25:22 This Pikachu has so much stored electricity that it's just a few Coulombs away from making a kugelblitz, or a black hole made of energy instead of matter.
14:14 so pretty much what denki kaminari does everytime he uses his quirk
This hole video in a nutshell: simple, complicated stuff
Hey Lockstin, just want to point out that at 21:45 you say the Japanese name for Thunderbolt is “10,000 Volts”. The correct translation is actually “100,000 Volts”. 「まん」means 10,000 in Japanese, so 「10まん」would be 10 10,000s, or 100,000
0:14 Most people who get struck by lightning survive, although most survivors receive long-term injuries.
3:22
"The name is moved after the sound it makes" 😶😶
Semantic Speach Errors are fun!
There is no words to describe how much I love this channel
14:31 Overdrive is probably named for an overdriven electric guitar, which is very loud and distorted.
23:34 regarding Zing Zap, I think the description is inacurate and misleading. Given that it's exclusive to 2 electric spikes Pokemon and that it's an on-contact physical attack, it's more like a spiky sparky tackle instead of a "blast."
Also the translation team for gen 1 physically didn't have enough characters for the word "lightning" in most of the moves, so they used "thunder" instead cause it fit. Also it sounds absolutely badass
Remember when pikachu used iron tail and electro ball, which is metal plus electricity which would be over powerd
Metal just conducts electricity. It doesn't amplify it.
@@DemonicEngineer but it would be more painful
Kaminari means Thunder and Lightning huh? Well one that helps with the whole "Thunderbolt" confusion ive always had and two MY HERO THO
Funny thing is I already knew Kaminari from Kaminari Attack, a random vanilla Fusion Monster in Yugioh that saw a tiny bit of use with Instant Fusion. I also know of Rai from Raichu and Raikou which was in Raigeki.

@@kyrisgaming dont forget deku's full name midorya izuku has the word for green mido and guess whaf his hair and hero clothes are colored
@@enderborn6860 not to mention that Katsuki Bakugou literally means "prideful explosion"
Hey Lockstin & Gnoggin, I was wondering, how much (Fusion) energy would it take to cover the entire surface of the planet. Because according to Zekrom and Reshiram's pokedex entries, they state "This legendary Pokémon can scorch the world with lightning/Fire. It assists those who want to build an ideal world/ world of truth."
As someone who studied electromagnatism and uses it professionally, I can say that your explanation is about as good as you get without a deep galaxy-brain moment of realization.
Zeraoras ultra sun dex entry states that even it it's attack misses the foe will be electrocuted by flying sparks, so I feel like its ability or the secondary effect of plasma fist should be that if it misses the foe becomes paralysed
Electric type should really just be called the yellow, fast and my personal favorite "that one type that can power an entire city"
In addition to paralysis freezing you, when you can move through it you are at half speed like how you mentioned when you train yourself to move under a taser you are still slowed.
3:20 "the name is moved" hmmmm
Wow. How'd I misd that?
So in BNHA, Kaminari's name is literally "thunder"?
His names means "thunder electricity " and that's weird actually
Ya its wierd

When I was a kid, I was trying to fix a gameboy charger because one of the terminals broke off the plug... ended up completing a circuit and shooting myself across the room when my legs extended. Still can’t believe I survived being a dumb child
Electricity doesn't throw you across the room, your spasming muscles do. You're literally strong enough to toss yourself across the room.
Blanco_Grayscale*7 that’s what I meant by “when my legs entended” lol
Wow, I actually didn’t know that lightning was just so powerful and fast, that it cuts through air particles. That is so cool! The more y’know
3:13 Just to nitpick, Final Fantasy VII uses Lightning/Bolt for its shock attacks rather than Thunder.
yeah when i played it was bolt. but the seriies final fantasy in general has used thunder/ara/aga/agun at points.
"let's laugh at thunderbolt being a weaker thunder"......and yet, I'll always put thunderbolt on my pokes instead of thunder. Thunderbolt has 90 damage and 100 accuracy.....thunder payoff of low accuracy and a few figured above......meh.......only on Kyogre will I ever place that move on.

I actually understood ALL of what you just said, even though it's been a year since I took Algebra 2, when I learned about parabolae.
In regards to Zingy Zap and Buzzy Buzz, I saw a theory that the Let’s Go Partner moves were inspired by “kid talk/baby talk”, since your player character appears to be even younger than Blue & Green at the time. TBH, I was hoping you’d cover the theory, but I’m tempted to do so myself... For example: (Child who doesn’t know the word ‘thunderbolt’) “Pikachu! Use that electric move! You know, the one that goes zippy zap!!” Alternatively, these moves are treated as arcane abilities, forgotten to time and memory. There might not BE modern day names for these moves! Your child trainer could just be coming up with it on the spot. “Uh, yeah... Eevee, hit them with that, uh... Twinkle Tackle?” *Eevee shrugs, uses fairy move* “Cool! That worked!”
Ahh I love that move Bolt Beak! It’s that move where you slap someone with your tail right? Gotta love SWSH
H I G H Q U A L I T Y A N I M A T I O N S
The ‘police officer taser’ thing really hits different now...
I am so mad they called the move Catastropika. It sounds so dumb. I think it would have been way better if they called it Pikatastrophe instead.
it's pretty clear there are family trees in Pokémon moves. Absorb can be replaced by Mega Drain which can be replaced by Giga Drain, so you can take Thunder Shock, replace it with Thunderbolt and then as an option, you can go right to Thunder, though I don't like that drop in accuracy.
3:20 "name is moved"
25:13 This is amazing!
I could not contain my laugh!
Are Psychic moves coming out next? I want to see how you explain Necrozma's signature moves
the moves use the word Thunder bc they didnt have enough character spaces in the move names for Lightningbolt so they just made the rest of them go with that
>not inserting "Thundercats Hoooo" when naming all the thunder moves.
Son, I am disappoint
I thought that they used thunder because they didn’t have enough name space on the old games
Small mistake, plasma fists turns normal moves to electric ones for everyone else but zeraora (unless you find someone way to attack with him twice in one turn which isnt possible so...)
Anyone else panic a little when he used blue as the color for raising stats at 8:22 ?
17:27
I thought everyone could hear that, it's so annoying!!
If you mean a low, slightly high-pitched hum, then I always figured it was my tinnitus.
Dark type moves are gonna be rough. I mean foul play is just called "trickery" in japanese and in the move you somehow trick the opponent into using their own base attack against them. BUT HOW?! do they do that weird ninja trope where they punch a log that looks like their opponent? I need details!!! This channel is my only hope, I've literally sat thinking about this for an hour, because God forbid I do homework and get my life together. but I've all but given up, maybe this channel can do better?
If it were for me, Volt Tackle would be the same but would also have the user using electricity to boost its movements, and the damage received is because the body isn't used to hitting so hard.
Pretty sure gen 1 also had restrictions on the number of letters in a move name. Thunderbolt is already pretty long but still has less than Lightningbolt. And because of that long names move they probably just went with the rest as a theme even though they had fewer letters.
Muscles when they get shocked: FLEX
21:45
10万(まん, "man")ボルト = 100 000 Volts, actually
1万= 10 000
17:32 That’s me! I didn’t even notice other people couldn’t hear it until I was 12, I just thought that’s how the world was. But no. Doctors and parents thought there was something wrong with my ears for a while until I got a specialist to take a look. Now I need to wear earplugs while I sleep, otherwise that’s all my brain focus’ on.
Lockstin sure loves that Ancient Red Dragon art.
Can you do a video on Zacizn and Zamaenta if you haven’t already?
10:34 *sad JOLTeon noises*
The move “Overdrive” is also a pun on classic overdrive Pedals like the Ibanez TS9 a lot of punk rockers front the 80’s use.
Additionally, the Impulse move is most likely a nod to impulse responses and attenuation of old British valve amplifiers and cranking them up to get more distortion and beat the headroom of the amplifier.
There should be a move like fade burst where it hits a target and does little bits of damage to surrounding foes
You should make a video where you give every attack a second type, similar to your Pokémon with three types video
"Take your arm and move it. That's your brain sending an electrical signal to make the muscle in your arm move."
Wait so if we move our arms first before thinking "make arm move" isn't that the MUSCLES sending a signal to the brain to make it move.....I....oof.
That also confused me, bruh. XD
I’m not sure if this is possible but me big dumb
You don't need to think "move arm" to move it, there's something called subconscious that's faster, everything you do you thought about it first (so a good set of electrodes can detect your action and react before you do it)
I guess every human is an electric type
No, we're normal types. Just have an electric type move in our set.
Btw, our brains don't trust the meatsuit, so it moves stuff automatically.
Hey Lockstin fun fact, did you know the move Spark has almost exactly the same name as Ember in Japanese!

Hey Lockstin, I love your content and you're a cool guy and all, but please just hear me out.
Warning signs on transformers and substations say: 'DANGER! High Voltage!' for a reason. Think of it this way: voltage is the cause, and current is the effect. You can't have current flowing without a difference in voltage potential. I know there are charts you can look at that says what damage certain levels of current can do to the human body, but that's based on the voltage drop across the body and what the resistance of the human body is. AC throws a few more factors in, too, like how the body's natural capacitance is bypassed, or what the power factor of the AC signal is.
The reason you can have high voltage shocks from static electricity is because there's nothing to maintain the charge behind the voltage. The voltage discharges in the zap you get from touching a doorknob or the like in a matter of nanoseconds and that's the end of it. I hope this helps to understand electricity a bit more.
Fun fact, if all the world’s lightning struck in the same place, the area would be as small as the center of a basketball court. The force would be as big as an atomic bomb.
