Suddenly the Kawasaki Versys-X 300's position in my shed is under threat!! I took a BMW G310 GS out for a test ride a couple of months back and I enjoyed it so much I've come back for more. But this time, I take out the KTM 390 Adventure on the same day and ride the Kawasaki to both test rides to compare!
As I hope I explain in the video, the main purpose of this test is to find out which of the three bikes is the best fit for me on the motorway and at higher speeds.
Whichever small adventure bike I own, there will be times where I will take it for a long slog on boring roads... I don't want that experience to be a miserable one! However that is only one small aspect of ownership and so I have to be careful not to let this test overshadow the other considerations I have! Both the BMW and the KTM will be more fun to ride than the Kawasaki, but which of the three would be my best bet?
This is a primarily a test of motorway performance e... what about the other sides of ownership such as city riding, off-road, purchase price & offers, warranty, reliability... the list goes on 🤯😁
Thanks to BMW Cotswold Motorrad of Cheltenham and AMS Motorcycle of Tewkesbury for the loan of your bikes!

I did the same review on my channel and came up with the same conclusion. The bmw g310gs is an awesome motorcycle!

    Hi Ricky
Just watched your video after having, by coincidence, read an article in Bike Magazine featuring a Husqvana 701 and it occurred to me that’s the bike you may be looking for: 156kg, 74bhp, 13 litre tank, single cylinder.
By the way, commiserations on losing the R1250R that starred in your videos. These persuaded me to part-ex my Street Triple RS for a new R1250R a few months ago and then, like you, spending a fortune on accessories. Makes my blood run cold how easy losses happen.

I owned a g310gs for a year and loved it for commuting and pottering about at lower speeds, with a taller screen it was OK at motorway speeds, the most dissaointing thing was the economy at higher speeds, also the lack of power at 70mph sometimes made it feel like a fight to maintain the higher speeds, if it had another 10 bhp I would probably still have it now, I currently have a husqvarna vitpilen(same engine as the adventure 390) and I have to say the engine is far superior in every way

Yes the 310 is a great bike in isolation, but the fact that the 390/401 exist does make life harder for the BMW.

Not sure but I mean to remember onepots don't like constant higher rpm cos of temperature and oil issues so if you plan to travel via motorways you could overthink your engine size choice?
Don't think that is better nowadays cos they made them run lean for emissions.
You did consider trying smth like Honda 300, 500x or a RE400 too?

Hi Ron, The CB500X is too heavy for my liking (I decided on an upper limit of 180kg wet for my "small adventure" bike. The Himalayan is also heavier than that, plus, like the CRF 300, neither are going to be particularly good on the motorway with under 30hp. Perhaps the CRF might be worth a look at a low or 0% APR, but Hondas finance option is actually nearer 9%!
In terms of high rpm, well I don't plan to getting on the motorway too often, but my point was that when I do have to do that, I don't want the journey to be unbearable 😁

Hi do you really want us to believe your not a BMW fan boy ? You didn’t show us the process for getting the X300. But your thinking of changing it. The clues in the amount of time each bike is on camera. Having just bought a KTM 390 adventure I’m all for it and once I’ve had the first service I’ll be putting on the givvi air flow screen which is bigger and wider. Happy hunting for your new bike 👍🏿

Wow you must be like, a detective or something. Also if you mean the process of me choosing the X300 in the first place, just look here ua-cam.com/video/NJmjphPAb8s/v-deo.htmlsi=bxgVrt6Npl7OdYEk
Of course I shouldn't expect anyone to look through the video archive of the person they are criticising beforehand ...

@@RikkyTangsorry Rikiki but out of the 102 likes you got for that vlog I was one of them . I’ve been a subscriber for the past 3 years thank you very much. And every post has got a like. So my point is your thinking of getting a g310 gs and you have something to compare it to which you didn’t do with the x300. Now after watching this post not much in the way of complaints about the bmw with the KTM a handful . So to that end I’ve just bought a 390 adventure 72 plate ex demo bike still not had its first service yet but booked in end of the month. I invite you to ride this bike sometime in October with its bigger screen. If your interested ? I hope we meet for this test ride 👍🏿 stay safe

@@desmiller4764 Hello Des, well I am sorry, I owe you an apology for mis-understanding your original comment. When it started with you saying that you thought I was a BMW fan boy, it made me think that you were making a negative comment. You went on to suggest that I have pretty much made up my mind to choose the BMW based on how much air time each bike recieved, when in fact I had already decided that the KTM would be the better bike for me out of the two choices. I did not understand the point you were originally trying to make and I took it the wrong way. Thankfully you are being patient with me and hopefully waiting for me to realise my mistake, which I have now 😊 Thank you for all of the likes and I hope that this hasn’t put you off me too much. The BMW dealer has now offered to throw in the crash bars and skid plate for free, but I think the KTM is still the better choice 👍I hope to have my own within the next few weeks with any luck…. I might even keep the Kawasaki and turn that into my long distance tourer! Thanks again.

I done a 2000 mile/7 day ride around Europe this summer, twisties, off road and motorway on my KTM 390 Adventure.
Second to last day was 643km run on Autobahn from Basel to Arnhem. The wee bike CRUISED at 80mph for 7 hours on the German Autobahn, with the odd push towards 90-95 for overtakes
I believe the taller screen from the 790 fits straight on, but as you learned with the Kawasaki, combatting buffeting is trial and error. What works for one person, doesn’t always work for someone else. There are too many variables. Rider height, helmet style, weather ….

That's great to hear, thanks for your comment! That's the kind of thing that I can imagine doing on my mini adventure bike. The 390 would be the best choice, especially if the autobahn is involved! Sorting a decent screen put may take a while though...
