    Small tip for getting it in neutral: give it a little bit of throttle (just above idle) and it'll go in neutral much easier

      It's a trick I discovered on my first bike in the early 80's, that was a swine to find neutral and especially as a novice. I frustratingly struggled for the first few months of riding!

    Re:vibration,I have done 500 mile days riding from SE Pennsylvania to Ohio and back and now have 2600 miles on mine total without any noticeable vibration issues. I get 65 miles(US) per gallon so the range is quite good. Ergonomics make standing off-road difficult,but it is good off paved roads. I love the bike.

      I think vibration is subject to each individual. I suffer riding parallel twins and have also had issues with 4 cylinder machines, whereby my hands end up in total cramp. Yet riding singles I have no issue whatsoever.

    Worth watching Fort Nine’s recent review of this bike.

    • @jonpram1737
      @jonpram1737 4 роки тому +13

      I really liked that review... although the conclusion was very much from the mindset of an off-road rider it seems - which is fair, it is Ryan after all! But really... how many people are actually buying this type of mini adventure bike to ride much more off-road than unsurfaced roads? It’s good feedback... but I can also see it being largely irrelevant to most of the core market - learners and restricted license holders who just want an adventure styled duke that can stand a bit less tarmac really.

      @@jonpram1737 I take mine off road often in the Colorado mountains. It does excellent. You just have to keep speed appropriate for the suspension travel and the trail you are on as with all bikes. Also 40 years experience of riding off and on road on all kind of bikes goes a long way enjoying any bike off road and being able to take it into the rough stuff. Just know it's not a dirt bike and not meant to be.

      @@jonpram1737 I brought my KTM 390 adventure for some hard enduro. Just not enough clearance. Well if you are Chris birch you won't have any problems, if you can double blip over the logs, but then again I would just ride my wr250F. This bike is good for commuting and some simple flat track or trail riding. Nothing hardcore. That said, I like this bike

      @@jonpram1737 Well, i think the off-road review is important, because this is a bike that begs to be compared to a drz400.
      the DRZ is of course more offroad oriented (dual sport vs adv bikes), the ktm has more gears, injection, etc. So, it's important to know that it is very road oriented instead of 50/50

      @@andrewstambaugh8030 that ithe 390 Adv not a 50/50 bike u can just see on a photo. Just doesn’t have the suspension like a wr250 or crf250l. No review needed to see that. Not hating on the bike I personally think some hardcore enduro guys just shout the hardest on new adventure bike reviews.. I live in Holland so I need to ride to different countries for some proper off-road. For my money it would be the 390 all the way

    You know what's cute? Honda's CB350 H'Ness for India market but not for EU or US market :\... Cheeky Honda going for R.E sale while H.D leaves India market entirely. But back to the KTM, I'd much prefer the RC 390, better format for the angry single cylinder as a sports bike. It's great bike for the price though. Wish again motorcycle manufacturers use a hybrid gel'd seat from factory for seat comfort.

      @@TheMissendenFlyer I just like the single on the RC390 better. Especially on US roads. The sportier positioning and fairings makes the bike more aero so it goes past 100mphs if you're lighter than 170lb. ALL of KTM line up IMO don't look great. It's probably the weird hornet like headlights that does it for me. And here in the US KTM support and parts are as spotty as Royal Enfield. Unless you live in the West Coast. Looks and support aside the performance for value is pretty good compared to the competition.

    Tested it in semi busy city. Loved it. Was heating a bit, but it was hot summer day. Vibrations are there, and really shouldn't. They fked up the mounting of rubbers on pegs. They should be sticked into (like in Triumph Street scrambler i.e.), instead of beeing screwed - that literally removed the whole point of these rubbers. Other then that, great bike. Missed some better sound from the pipe, and a bit of more umph would be good outside of the city. But if any1 tells you that this bike isn't big enough for city, i'm 100% they don't know how to ride a bike :) Gr8 deal if you want the plastic fresh, and no buttprint on the saddle. If that doesn't scare you, plenty of bikes on the used market, that are "better" :)

    Uncomfortable saddle (we don't stand up all the time!!!). I'll stick with my CB500. Range 250miles plus.

    I will take single cylinders over twins any day, Have a DR 650, a Suzuki s40 650 single, and a Versys 300 X twin, thinking to trade the versys in for the KTM 390 Adventure, than I will have all singles. I had a Royal Enfield 500 single and loved it as well. Had to many twins and 4 to list, from 250 cc to over 1000 cc , and now all I want is singles love the sound and feel of them. By the way the KTM 390 Adventure has no competition, nothing in that size comes as equipped as the KTM 390, adjustable front shocks, and rear shocks , ABS for on road and one for off road, traction control you can turn off to name a few. That puts it in a class of its own the others, have a long way to catch up. Not that they are not good bikes they are just in a different class. KTM should of put the Dunlop TrailMax Mission tires on this bike, and I would like a larger gas tank. I can over look the gas tank but will be putting Dunlop TrailMax Mission tires on if I get one as well as the aluminum bash plate, heated grips, and side and top racks that can take the GIVI Trekker 33/46 liter bags. ( have them on my Versys and love them, also can put the 46 liter on top of my DR650.) Liked your review, but don't know why you are putting down single cylinders.

    Blundered into this bike at the dealer a couple weeks back (they also have a killer deal on a 2019 Goldwing that I'm trying real hard to avoid.... :^) ) and dang, I fit it fairly well (lanky fellow with 36" inseam). Started looking into it and was getting really impressed when I found out a 490 Adventure is due in the spring. A bigger machine for eating the Western US roads would be closer to ideal where as the 390 seems ideal for the rides I see you and your mates on. So I'll wait to see how the 490 is. I'd go for the CB500X but the weight gives me pause.

    I've had one of these new, but sold it after 3 months, absolutely terrible quality control. I had stripped threads or things threaded off centre,it burnt oil almost like petrol, no oil leaks though. First service was a joke, dealer never even changed the oil filters. TFT was replaced 3 times for condensation inside after 20 mins, gave up in the end. A common fault on 390 and 790 which KTM refuse to rectify. The quick shifter £215 option never worked properly or stopped altogether. The quick shifter btw is factory fitted to all engines , just disabled in the ECU . the £215 is for the dealer to connect his laptop and add a tick in a box to enable it. In my honest opinion, leave these alone if you don't want endless reliability issues.

They may listen to you as a Moto journalist if these issues raised their heads while you have it on long term review. It may help others who own these bikes. I understand there is a sizable market for a small full spec Adventure bike especially for the riders of advancing years, but no manufacturers want to do it for fear of harming sales higher up the ladder. * condensation in the tft display
    * condensation in the front light
    * play in the rear sprocket
    * vibrations in the front brake
    * ignition can be a bit fiddly to get the key to turn.
    ...so I'm thinking the build quality is not all that great.
    However, it is a lot of fun. You can be a real hooligan on the twisties. And I have taken it for a proper Norwegian adventure ride with a hammock and all camping gear, did lots of gravel roads and some light dirt. I am the owner of a KTM 390 Adventure which I bought in January 2021 as my very first motorcycle.
    About four weeks ago, while riding on city streets, I noticed something unusual with the damping motion of the rear suspension and stopped immediately. The rear suspension was leaking fluid badly. I was able to ride back home and took the bike to the KTM dealer for a check. The KTM dealer received my bike on December 7, 2021. A month has passed, and they have no idea at all whether the faulty rear suspension is covered by the warranty and that it must be checked with the KTM factory sometime during mid-January. The bike is not in working condition and it is in their workshop since its breakdown.
    This is a very disappointing and frustrating situation as I bought this bike mainly because of its alleged quality suspensions and its two-year warranty. Needless to say, KTM has not lived up to my expectations as a newbie in motorcycling.

    So what specification makes this an "adventure" bike? I know an adventure can be what you make it and all that. For some a Sunday ride out to the coast is an adventure! . But seriously though, when you really think about an adventure bike you do imagine something that you could take anywhere and do anything on. It's a nice little bike but tagging it the 390 "adventure" is stretching it a bit.

    Totally disappointed with KTM. They had years to get this bike right, and have utterly failed to give it proper "adventure" credentials to the point that the RE Himalayan is a more accomplished bike off the tarmac. There is a market for small displacement ADV bikes for those that are getting on in years, and KTM and others have missed the mark time and again. If RE can squeeze another 10hp out of the Himalayan to make motorway miles just that bit easier, its totally wiped the competition. Why did it take all those years just to change tyres and handlebars from a Duke? Compare the ground clearance. Having said that, nice road bike.

    • @nosherz
      @nosherz 4 роки тому +2

      There's a manufactures agreement to NEVER build a smaller capacity adventure bike that ticks all the boxes, in my opinion. Why ?....it would kill the market stone dead for all the overpriced, overweight, gizmo laden adventure bikes currently on sale. One example of many, was the Honda Varadero. With a more focused design and a mid-capacity engine it could've been a real winner. But no - instead Honda gave buyers the choice of a popgun 125, or a lard arse one thousand, and nothing else in between : )

    • @Dreddingbath
      @Dreddingbath 4 роки тому +1

      Know what you’re saying but maybe you’re just not the target market, KTM seem to be aiming at younger riders and/or older riders just dipping their toes into ADV...plus aiming at global markets, mainly India? Clearly road biased but I’ve seen a number of reviews showing it has plenty of capability off road in the right hands if not too extreme. Being unkind, I guess it is a better than average SUV at home in most situations, or a fantastic compromise capable of doing most things well and having a lot of fun on. I am very tempted as a older but new rider, sounds ideal.

    • @nosherz
      @nosherz 4 роки тому

      @@Dreddingbath The KTM's nice enough, but it's really just a road bike dressed up to look the part. I think the Himalayan's the best all terrain bike out of the box for anyone who doesn't want to spend a fortune, plus it's got decent long distance comfort & luggage carrying capacity. Of course they deliberately gave it an under powered motor to comply with my conspiracy theory.

    Great video again..
    I've been trying to find a small adventure bike I like the BMW G310GS but this KTM is quite nice too..
    I need a second bike for commuting ect and being able to do some light green lane riding would be great. I've been trying to find a 400 or 450cc twin, but doesn't seem to be anything on the market..
    So it might be the baby BM but Ii will have to be a 2021 model because for some silly reason on the 2022 models you can't switch the abs off.. which to me is a bit stupid on a bike made for on and off road.. The suspension is a bit of a let down too on the BM, I will have to spend another £1000 to upgrade and pay someone to do the work as I'm to old and suffer with arthritis, so can't do the work myself these days, and for a ex mechanic it's hard letting someone else work on your vehicle and have to pay them to do so..
    Anyway I wish there was more choice for small to mid size adventure bikes..

    Nice review, TMF. The bike's reluctance to get into neutral may be a legacy of KTMs dirt bike heritage: when off road, you never want to find neutral by accident, as it can lead to disasterous consequences. Every KTM, Husaberg, Husqvarna enduro or dirt bike I've ever ridden has been reluctant to find neutral, supposedly for that reason. As for serious off roading, I think the 390 lacks in the suspension and ground clearance department, although for green laning, it will probably excel. Cheers.

    I have just sold my 390 Duke. I found its over tuned engine, or "peppy nature" just annoying and to me it was gutless in most situations.
    I can`t think how this engine could work off road.
    You only get over 40 bhp from a 373 cc 4 stroke single at a cost
    It was light and easy to pull out of the garage but the occasions got less and less.
    I finished up hardly riding it.
    Each to their own ,I expect.
