Loved Loved John Cipollina...Link could not have had a better friend while we lived in San Mateo, Cal. Best of friends....great musician..Link had the highest respect for him
+Sharon Wray Wow, you were married to Link...I can't believe I just found out about him and I've studied and listened to every kind of rock there was and I'm 52. Nobody I know knows of him and yet he was born in 29'. As I've come to hear his music and become acquainted with who he was I realize what a treasure he was and is. 1st king of cool (forget James Dean), 1st punk rocker (sorry Ray Davies), 1st rock artist, 1st Native American rocker and probably entertainer.....how the hell I missed him I don't know. Incredible talent and raw energy.
Link Wray was one the best and the rock n roll hall of fame isn't fit to tie his shoes. I was blessed to catch his act here locally in the early 2000's and the crazy thing is that I was totally unaware that he was in town that night and thank God I made one of my routine stops at the 5 Points Music Hall that night because I might have missed it! He's sorely missed every time I see one of his performances or interviews on video.
John Cipollina and I were good friends...through John, I met Link...there will never be another Link Wray!!! John use to say, Link was his idol. I got to jam Rumble with him on drums and he became mine.
I saw John Cipollina playing with Link Wray in Copenhagen 1980 I think it was. They played Who do you love for about 40 minutes. Awsome, wonderful, amazing. I still remember with joy.

DKdanishgamer000 ps3 Wow, that got my attention. That surely was cool.
I'm so jealous! I never saw John, my favourite guitar player. Even though I saw QMS in Toronto, John wasn't with them. I don't even know who the lead guitarist was.
Yes , and lets not forget that Link lost a lung in the 50s from a bout of Tuberculosis and still had a hell of a voice, plus his use of natural reverb on his guitar track on the original Jack The Ripper, which he recorded in a stair well was innovative as hell back then. Were glad to have had them both, also the great Carl Perkins, they were the men ... thanks and keep on rockin..
He set in my living room and sang I was always amazed at his voice my aunt was his daughter Beth I know he's famous for guitar and rightly so but his voice was so good 👍.
I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS EPIC FOOTAGE EXISTS!!! John Cipollina with his signature whammy bar driven fingerpicked leads and one his major influences, Link Wray, on the same stage! Thanks for posting!!
quicksilver.. John Cipollina (August 24, 1943 - May 29, 1989) was a guitarist best known for his role as a founder and the lead guitarist of the prominent San Francisco rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service.
In the mid-60s, my cousin drummed for We The People, a New Bedford, MA full tilt boogie rock group. They recorded "Always Lies" (online at a garage band site) in a Providence, RI studio . Link Wray also recorded there. He may have met Link. And I believe that Wray wrote the B side. When I find it in my home, I'll post again. This has been my brush w/greatness. At one point years later, three members of the group worked on the same fishing boat. Even later, the rhythm guitarist was captain. The keyboardist/singer was later asked to join the cast of "Hair " on Bwy. The night before rehearsals, he got busted. Years later he returned to NYC and his hotel was the same building as the 1960s jail. He asked for his old room back. This has been a '60s flashback. You will be returned to your own time. Wait, theres more. My sales boss in LA was an Apache. She lived next to the Warner Bros. studio in Burbank. But now Im in the hard land of the winter. With the LA blues again.
Check out side 2 of Happy Trails by Quicksilver. The crowning achievement of SF psychedelia. Incredible playing by John Cippolina. If the feedback drenched 'Calvary' puts you off at first, give it a few more listens when your in a reflective mood. It's actually a stunning composition from beginning to end.
Damn, this is brilliant. Thanks so much for posting this. EVERY guitar player, singer/songwriter should be required to study these masters. They were true craftsmen. I'm still blown away.
@@furtherdefinitions1 I dig Link but every rock guitarist was also inspired by Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and Huber Sumlin and many more...including...dare I say it...the abusive Ike T, who everyone ripped off but it is uncouth to speak his name so rockers get away with ripping him off with no acknowledgement that Ike influenced them. And btw, Hendrix dug the eff out of great country players like Buck Owens and Roy Clark. He was a connoisseur of all music, but we only got to experience 3-4 years of his initial creativity.
wOW great quality! This was just 20 years on from the birth of rock & roll and not only was he a link from blues to the 60's guitar gods but he's layin' down the template for tight & snarly punky power pop that would break in the second half of the 70's
Exactly. This is like early punk. I've never heard Link get credit for his contribution in this regard. Yes, always recognised as a pioneer of distortion but not as a punk wayfinder.
Thanks. This is great. The Rumble Story as I understand it is. The speaker amp got damaged. He played. Said Um, then cut a few slits in it and so on. The dirty sound was born.
I love John's psychedelic guitar tone I just love psychedelia but this band kicks ass but to be honest I never knew about Link Wray till today wow I've been in another planet I guess, but this shit is really good so good!
Wow! I wish I had seen these two playing together. But I did see them each separately, which is about as much good fortune as anyone could reasonably wish for.
These two guitarists does neither Art for the sake of art, nor of Art against art but for Art which has nothing to do with art, because the Art has everything to do with human existence 🙂👌🤠
OMG, I can hear so many later groups coming from these two guys. A little bit here, another there. Oh to have been a musician at this show and perhaps heard the beginnings of sounds that later groups expanded on.
Part Navajo here. Once in a while I get called Elvis cause I rock some sideburns, but I always forget to correct them and say "that's Link Wray to you, bitch!"
Link Wray had incredible timing....he's such an underrated legend...guy could flat out rock a house with a guitar...Cipollina wasn't able to keep up in my view here...he looked wasted, it was his birthday...Link didn't drink or do drugs...he chewed gum and played rock and roll baby

@vlaho1967 I mean, at least we tried to be good at something awesome, right? Better to be lucky than good sometimes!
Link Wray and John Cipollina playing Elvis in 1974. I think the earth stopped moving for a minute there.
Stopped for 17:58, to be precise.
I know Im quite off topic but does anyone know of a good website to watch new movies online?
@Trey Brayden I use flixzone. You can find it on google :)

Bonus points for his flawless hair and iconic side burns … 🎯👏💈
At a time when Cipolina's hair was more the done thing.
A few years later Link’s hair was down to his belt.

Link Wray and Robert Gordon played at a small club in New Jersey in late 1970's which I saw. It was a good show.

Cip and Wray? This is the coolest shit.
