careful when watering your tomato plants, they dont like their leaves to get wet.. and make sure to take off the 'suckers' so the plant puts more energy into making flowers and tomatoes vs.foliage. Pick one main stem and the rest pinch or cut off. what a garden transformation ! :)
I was doing the same before, but Rachel and Jun inspired me to start growing some herbs on my kitchen window. I love chives and thyme so I tried those and... well... they haven't died yet, so I guess it's going all right?

Hilariously I JUST came back in from gardening to see this upload (two tomatoes and some blackberries so far! Three zucchini growing, two heads of broccoli, chard, two cucumbers, and a bunch of other tomatoes and blackberries) - a very good start for year one. (:

That soil looks very sandy, do you know of anywhere that has horses? Some good old horse muck was my grandfathers favourite way of adding goodness back into his allotment and dealing with the sandy soil.
I guess that's where the compost comes in. They did grow things last year but had started too late to get much out of it. They had a cooking video (not Jun's Kitchen, I don't believe) of them making Rachel's favorite vegetable into a dish from what they'd grown.

Be careful when watering tomatoes! If the leaves get too damp, you can get mildew and it's very hard to get rid of. My advise would be to water them without touching the leaves as much as possible, you'll tell the difference!
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley yep, I myself live in a place where weather gets really damp, that's why we don't really plant tomatoes that much, and if we do, you really have to fight for it. Drier climates aren't that affected as moist ones, though.

You can save your vegetable scraps in the freezer and then mix them straight into the soil as compost. A lot of people will tell you that you need a compost barrel and you need to stir it around every so often but the truth is you really don’t. Straight into the ground works perfectly well. I am curious though, won’t that plastic tent just keep the rain off and therefore make your plant dry??
Here in america when we plant our tomatoes (atleast my mother does this) before we put the plant in the ground, we first sprinkle the hole with crushed egg shells and magnesium sulfate--epson salt. It helps them grow stronger and better. I did an experiment by testing which method worked best, with or without the additives, and with won out by a long shot. The plants grew twice as big and therefore had twice the yield for a longer period of time, than the plants without it. If you choose to do this, you still can, just gentle dig around the plant again and sprinkle it in.
I have gotten great results this last year, after mulching up my fall leaves and putting them on the garden bed in the fall, letting them decompose over winter and then turning it into the soil in the spring.. My very dry, dead veggie bed has become loamy, and full of earthworms.. first time in 20 years of living here. And the leaves were free! My sister, who keeps a horse at a local barn, told me the barn owner was giving away the compost pile and to just come get what I wanted.. I got two laundry bucket sized loads (what would fit in my car) and put those on my garden this year as well. I have no dead plants this year!

Splendid choice Jun. I played Harvest Moon so I know that Tomatoes are Summer Veggies, they grow 10 days and you can re-harvest them every 3 days. Splendid choice indeed.
Nice and calming 🥰 If anyone is inspired to plant stuff: I recommend planting tomatoes a lot deeper, if you take off some leaves and bury them a good 10cm deeper it'll be much stronger. And the water should not hit the leaves or tomatoes, it can lead to burnt leaves, disease or split fruits. I recommend watering at the base, not directly at the stem. Happy gardening 🥰
Just a tip for watering - make sure the tomatos and cucumbers dont get water on their leaves, it makes them very prone to sicknesses, especially the tomatoes! ;)

I have a very small backyard and we just ignored it except for mowing until last year when my husband wanted to try gardening. He asked me what vegetables I wanted and I suggested cucumbers because I really REALLY like pickles. So far each vine we have has produced enough cucumbers to make half a gallon of pickles. Before the season is over I'll have at least four gallons of the things. So mind those cucumbers!

If you're already growing blackberries you should try adding in a few black raspberry plants

@@DanielLiNeutrinos Yeah, and I'm jealous of it, lol. Even if I lost weight, genetics make it so I'm not likely to be flat enough to sit like that unless I have surgery and that's a nope. It's kind of cool though as it pretty much allows your body to act as a chair.
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley as an Asian, body genetics aside, I'm always intrigued how some people can NOT do the squat - the balance thingy.... And yeah, it's very practical during mountain camping without matresses let alone chair. I can just squat and cook on the ground.

I have a very small backyard and we just ignored it except for mowing until last year when my husband wanted to try gardening. He asked me what vegetables I wanted and I suggested cucumbers because I really REALLY like pickles. So far each vine we have has produced enough cucumbers to make half a gallon of pickles. Before the season is over I'll have at least four gallons of the things. So mind those cucumbers!
