@@misterturkturkle how about you just do this, and keep it to yourself. There's no reason to piss off people who come here because they enjoy the videos - which is like 99% of the people watching anyway. some opinions are unpopular and deserve to stay that way.
@@Slechy_Lesh It is not healthy for them, sugar is very bad for their health (emphasise on this because people tend to ignore/not realise), plus they cannot eat some fruits (not sure about pineapple in this case) and other ingredients that humans can.
It looks like they were inspired by Taiwanese Pineapple Cakes. For pineapple cake fillings, the pineapples are cooked down until they become a jam. Sometimes they add fillers like wintermelon to make it smoother and less acidic, probably similar to why white bean paste was added.
Poki meowing desperate to try Jun's manju is so good! This was the first time yours got so diferrent from the original, I like how Rachel is 100% honest lol
I love how even as good as Jun is with English, and he is really, really good, he still has to occasionally ask Rachel for pronunciation help. It shows that Jun is always working to improve and he's not embarrassed to ask for help from his wife.
@@Emily-hd9sm Because English isn't really a language, it's three or four different languages in a trench coat walking around and pretending to be a grownup.
JUN THE PAW PRINT AAAAH. I love it so much. Also, you always learn more by failing than you ever do succeeding, so I hope you keep trying this challenge! It's wonderful to watch
You said you've never even had pineapple mochi manju, so you were already giving yourself a disadvantage, lol. It still looks great and somehow, Rachel said she tasted strawberry pineapple, which actually sounds really delicious!
@@pemilystallwark Whoops, I don't have the greatest hearing, it seems! 😅 But I would love to give that a try if it were made with strawberry and pineapple, lol.
I love these comparison videos, they're so much fun to watch. It'd be really cool to see you re-attempt any of the recipes after tasting the boxed version of the food!
I suspect the pineapple in the manufactured manju was prepared like a jam or confit. If you were to make your own version again, perhaps start there, and add a bit of fresh pineapple to the cooked pineapple and bean paste mixture to preserve that texture you enjoyed, while marrying the flavors more. (also, keep in mind your manju were fresh, whereas the Sakura Co. manju have been "ripening" for a while, allowing all of the flavors to develop and marry. If you had any of your homemade manju left, how were they the next day?)
Jun, you are too hard on yourself! Any chef would have to make a recipe many times before they perfect it. I agree with the jam comment, but be careful adding raw pineapple to a jelly as the enzymes may make it watery (blanch it first).
Everything you make looks absolutely delicious! When I watch your videos, I end up learning so much about how to cook with ingredients that I don't usually have in my kitchen. Thank you for teaching me and for getting me excited about eating new and different foods!
i make these sorts of pineapple pies a lot because it’s a traditional dish where i live, usually the pineapple is cooked down into a jam or even thicker sort of like a paste! if you want to include chunks you could probably blend half and cut the other half into cubes, then cook it down into the paste 😊
I'd be shocked if Jun was able to make a sweet on par with these artisans the very first time he tried. These are people who have honed their craft for ages. That doesn't mean Jun isn't talented though. He's an incredible culinary artist and it's fun to watch him try his hand at making all these snacks and sweets.
I always enjoy people freestying their cooking and try different things. And how he doesn't mind trying, and seemed unbothered that his work falls behind the professional one. This is simple, but as someone who has the "be excellent or you fail" kind or mindset, its such a nice and refreshing reminder to enjoy things refardless od the result
I enjoy your challenges. Homemade products are rarely the same as commercially made products. Just because homemade is different doesn't mean commercial is better. It all depends on how you enjoy different flavors, textures, etc.
This is my favorite video format. I love how Jun is using his own creativity to (re)invent a recipe. And of course watching him cook and bake is the most wholesome, relaxing thing ever❤
I tried the pineapple mochi manju from my Sakuraco box and it did actually have a few pineapple cubes in it. They were really tiny and added some nice crunch. So perhaps if you try making some again, you could make a thick pineapple jam and fold it with white bean paste and a few tiny pineapple cubes. I love the paw print and your content :3
Poki is such a gentle foodie... 😋My heart, literally, breaks into lil pieces just by watching him so disappointed. Poor Poki! He could only imagine the taste of this yummy pineapple mochi... 💔💔💔
I love seeing the authentic reactions at the end! So much of cooking is learning from what doesn't work, and it's super cool to see you try and make these difficult snacks yourself!
Your yard looks so green and pretty! Also that Poki meow when you started tasting the manju was super cute XD You made it look so easy to make the snack! I think with practice you could have made it just as pretty as the professional one, but it still looked super tasty and paw print was adorable! Also I agree that the chunks of fruit add a nice bit of texture when eating. I want to try making milk bread. The recipe I saw steamed it instead of baking it. Since Jun steamed the manju it made me wonder it steaming might make for a more spongey texture?
Jun: take a smol break to the window to show the viewer what is like summer in Japan Poki (as a UA-cam video producer): JUNNNN. BACK TO COUNTER NOW! WE CONTINUE TO SHOOT. ❤
The filling on yours looks super good. We have been doing sakuraco 2 months now, and really love any of the manju or daifukus. Our only complaint is that there are some things not vegetarian friendly. I wish they had a box where it had 2 of each item so me and my husband can each have our own instead of having the extra bags of pork or fish crackers. The tea has been amazing!
You've promoted Sakuraco so much and they always looks great. The tours on the main channel is great too. When I'm old enough and live alone, this is on my list of things to get.
I remember reading somewhere that the word "amateur" comes from the root word "amore" or "to love." Loving something enough to try it out even though you're not experienced is always a win! Plus then you have two sweets instead of one so I see no downsides here. :)
I got a 6-month Sakuraco box subscription in June and your taste testing is making me really excited to receive my August box! Usually gets to me (Denver, Colorado) by the third week of the month.

And I usually bake it rather then steam it, it's golden brown and taste good.
