I didn't share this video to get sympathy from anyone. I always appreciate prayers and support from others. We'll decide what we want to do with this boat eventually. Thanks again. Converting an inboard motorboat to an outboard motorboat is a lot more work than just a platform. Now you need linkage and steering mechanism changes, wiring harness issues, not to mention now having a weak hull with a hole to seal that will always be a problem waiting to happen. Then there is safety certification with the Coast Guard, this could be a problem that haunts you to the end of this boat ownership. No, the best thing to do if the hull is sound is to rebuild the engine if needed and while at it rebuild the inboard transversal system to ensure you do not fix one problem only to cause another. Who knows, nothing may be all that bad, but getting it out and into a good mechanic's hands is what is best for you and everyone else that gets onboard. Then finally the last thing to consider is resale. If you try to convert this from inboard to outboard by yourself, finding a buyer at the right price may be hard, whereas getting into a bat that was rebuilt or even verified by a good mechanic will payoff better than the alternative. I will tell you quite frankly, I would never buy a boat the was an inboard and converted to an outboard unless the manufacturer or a hull rebuilder was doing the work by completely removing the stern and they had a kit to build the outboard stern on the boat and fill the engine compartment or find a way to strengthen an put that space to use.

    I think with all of the possible bad stuff, the good part is that you realize that the shaft needs to go in and out of the gimball bearing be and that an inch extension or pilot shaft comes in handy. And who said that size doesn't matter. 😂. And, seriously, of you think that the motor might be locked up, of pull the first plugs in the even that water has gotten into a combustion chamber causing a 'water lock' situation. And, also, of it were me, of it's repairable if repair that engine/outdrive. And if not repairable I'd probably go back with the same engine. But hey, I'm definitely no expert. Hey Oliver pull out the spark plugs in the motor and see if water is on any of the plugs. Then see if you can spin over the motor with the starter. It should spin over. It looks like the out drive is burnt up in the upper part of the drive. When you pulled out the driveshaft it should spin easy. Pull out the oil plug in the bottom out the drive and see if there is milky oil filled with metal in it if so drive is eating the bearings and gears up. If I lived closer to you I would come fix this boat for you. I worked at a MC dealership from 1986 till 2006.

    • @SaltyReflections
      @SaltyReflections  3 місяці тому

      Your thinking is on point. The motor is not locked up, and cylinders are dry. It's running, and it sounds good. The top of the outdrive is locked up. My next step is to drain old oil and whatever else that got mixed in it. Then, put new oil in it and run it to see if the oil gets contaminated again. Also, I'll have to look for another top section for the outdrive. It's not as bad as thought.🙃

    • @cheesecakehunk7932
      @cheesecakehunk7932 3 місяці тому

      @@SaltyReflections Hey if the motor has a engine oil cooler pressure check to see if it is leaking. It could have a tiny leak and that could be all the water in the oil is. It is possible that the water exhausts manifolds could be leaking between the elbows and the manifolds. There is a set of exhaust flappers down in the exhaust Y pipe that stops the sea water from coming up in the exhaust manifolds when the boat comes off of plane, or when you’re picking up your nets and everybody is in the back picking up the ball or picking shrimp the back of the boat sits down deeper in the water and water could be coming by the flappers getting in the exhaust manifolds. Worst case cracked block or leaking head gaskets.

    If you ever decide to buy a new boat for shrimp I’d suggest getting a lafitte skiff put you some skimmers and work the shallows look early in the morning when the current is rolling hug the land that the current is rapping around! Shrimp ain’t all that dumb as you trawl year after year you start to realize just how smart they are!

    • @SaltyReflections
      @SaltyReflections  Місяць тому

      Yeah, we have used a Lafitte boat in the past, but we didn't use the skimmer nets. We have seen them used in other states but have never seen or heard of them being used in our area. We (in SC) have very specific areas where we are allowed to trawl shrimp. So the skimmer nets are not used here due to the trawling grounds are not in shore where the skimmer nets would be useful.

  • @ericcope8216
    @ericcope8216 3 місяці тому

    Outboard is the way to go, yes, it will be in the way but I feel it'll outweigh ( no pun)? the inconvenience. Plus, like you said, there's a significant weight saving advantage not to mention easier maintenance. The extra deck space will be greatly appreciated. Cost of a OB bracket, might be cost prohibitive? God luck either way. Just my opinion! Thanks for the video!

    • @SaltyReflections
      @SaltyReflections  3 місяці тому

      I'm not seeing a cheap way to solve the issues with this boat. It has given us trouble since we purchased it. I've seen some of the OB brackets prices and they're definitely not cheap. This situation sucks but it has to be dealt with.

  • @Belmont148
    @Belmont148 3 місяці тому

    I would swap it out for a new replacement that is an exact match but get fuel injection. Service all the wiring and hoses while it’s out and have the bravo checked over and possibly rebuilt. Probably the easiest and best ROI to get as many years as you guys would want out of it without a bunch of headaches. Maybe replace the bravo transom assembly just in case while it’s out. An outboard conversion will probably run too much money imo.

    • @SaltyReflections
      @SaltyReflections  3 місяці тому

      @@SaltyReflections I'm on team outboard all the way, just didn't know if you wanted that much work converting. That Parker transom should be good to go. I would just make sure you get a bracket that has a flotation pod for the extra leverage of a heavy outboard. I think most all of them have that now anyway. Should be a great setup though. Well Ill say it again, you can not trawl with an inboard/outboard engine/leg it will fail every time , you could build a box section within the current motor space to mount your new outboard engine, this will eliminate the problem of nets etc tangle up and damage prop. (maybe) Good Luck .

    You are a good man Oliver! My patience would never last. I would be using some choice words and probably sling a few things, lol! I don't know how you stay so calm. Not into mechanics but I loved watching you work! You and Stephanie make a good team no matter what you do!

    Unless you are going to put a diesel engine in there with stern drive you need to go out drive

      A diesel would be another option. I have no idea at this time what I'll do.

    When removing outdrive always put shift in forward. Drive will come right off.

    • @SaltyReflections

      Are you sure? I'm thinking when the shifter is in the forward position the cable pushes to the most inward position in the outdrive.

      The motor wasn't locked up, but it's still getting water in the oil. I'm not sure how it's getting in the oil. Maybe a blown head gasket. Would a compression test help determine the issue? Outdrive is locked up on the top end. The bottom end is ok.

      Was it the first time running the boat this year after sitting for the winter? If so did you drain the water from the engine and manifolds for winter storage? Manifolds can crack and get water into the oil -pull the spark plugs and look at each one to see if one are two was getting water.then with all plugs out run a compression test.readings should be within 10% from highest to lowest. Was the gear lube clean -was it full? Change every 100 hours. Mercruiser makes a remote oil tank that goes on the inside that hooks into the upper oil plug on the drive. At the slow speeds you trawl heat builds up in the gear case and can push out lube when pressure builds up. A remote resavor is vented so pressure can't build up plus a quick look when checking the oil you can see that it is full also. The upper can be rebuilt not a big deal. Minorcan mullet has my phone number are Gmail at same id.

    Hey Oliver that motor is a Chevrolet 350 R code block from say like a 94 or 95 Suburban,1500 Silverado or Tahoe. If it's the motor it could be a lot less expensive than adding an outboard,you'd have to strip it to a long block then add the rest of your marine components. Hate ya'll are dealing with this. Take care.

      Thanks for the info, man, I really appreciate it. We've got our health and that's what matters the most. We'll work out making a decision on what we're going to do with the boat. Take care.

    You should be able to turn the outboard by hand and watch if the prop turns to determine if it’s the outboard or the motor that’s locked up
