As an Award winning Feature Film Editor, I believe that In a few years, it will work in our favor, but I still believe that no AI can replace our editing. Ai will help us be faster, and get to the creative process quicker, but it could never replace our decisions, it can copy our style, but never our real decisions. It will be an invaluable tool, but it won't replace us. In fact, I believe we will become even more powerful in our positions in the scheme of things. Editors will have even MORE power.

@@oscarwaterman6137 That's kinda the same as replacing, though. If every editor is 10x faster, then 1 editor can now do the work of 10 editors. Which means the bottom 90% of editors are going to struggle to find full-time work that hasn't been outsourced to an AI or the Philippines.

@@tyler.walker I don't believe it will replace me or my asistants. If my assitant editors can be faster, then we can tackle even more jobs in the same year. Instead of editing 3 Feature Films, we could probably tackle 6 with a few more in the crew, in the same time. I think it will give us more creative time.

Competing with AI is equivalent to competing with someone who can do your work better than you and hundreds of time faster than you. That's utterly nonsensical.

I think you guys nailed it. It isn't human beings vs AI. It's how will human beings use AI to help them create what they want. The "S curve" will be learning how to use AI to help tell the stories.
Here's where AI will shine: more people will get to tell stories than ever before. Doesn't mean they'll have an audience. But it does mean that AI can do a, say, 70% job on the tasks the story teller needs help with but cannot afford to hire people to do. I'm thinking of people in countries that lack a robust story telling venue, stories that have "good enough" production value to be consumed. I think AI will help a lot of people find their voice and we'll hear from a broader range of storytellers. And that is a fine, fine thing.
Awesome discussion. One important topic worth expanding on is the evolution of what Steve Jobs often referred to: “taste”. Not just the taste of filmmakers, but the taste of audiences. One of my concerns is that the bar for “good taste” among consumers is degrading. If you’re in the business of entertainment, the best lens to look through isn’t necessarily “how will AI change film, TV, UA-cam, etc” but “how will audiences spend their time?” If a larger and larger proportion of people’s time is allocated to short form, mass production, “lower quality” content, it will have a negative impact on quality content. High quality production only matters if enough people desire it. The music industry is a perfect example. I think a strong argument can be made that the quality of popular music has significantly degraded down to the same chord progressions with the same drum tracks and filters, condensed down to what works best with the TikTok algorithm for 30 second videos. That’s very different than Bohemian Rhapsody.
AI actually does have it's own "Taste" which is effectively the model it was trained on paired with the goal it was given. Most AI enthusiasts who are following this closely can quite accurately tell you what was made in which different programs because of the different kinds of patterns inherent to each program. Dall-E will look different to Stable Diffusion which will look different than Mid Journey.
The biggest convoluting factor though is the language models (all the ChatGPT types out there). You can now have master-language models that train sub-language models to accomplish specific goals and actually go learn the skills to accomplish those goals. For instance give it a prompt like "Go create a digital product that sells to a million people" and that master language model will start having sub language models go learn how to create various types of digital products. Maybe one will be learning coding to make a website. Maybe one will be scanning the internet to better be able to tell what kinds of products have what kind of sales potential. Maybe another will create plugins to interact with different websites, programs, and otherwise human controlled interfaces. The list could go on infinitely, but that master language model will be able to fine tune the goals and results of all the sub language models.
IRL our content success has definable metrics that tell us whether people engage with that content or not. We fine tune our goals & strategies by using that feedback until we land on content formats that people will watch. Those same feedback mechanisms could absolutely be used to do the same with AI models.
Photographers & artists were saying the same thing about AI, but then it started to win globally acclaimed contests, judged by industry experts, with the world's top photographers as the competition. Nobody even knew until the people who put in the prompts stepped up and said it was an experiment. Look up the Boris Eldagsen AI content & the Sony World Photography Awards.
Same as CGI in movies.
You can have a whole movie be augmented by CGI or you can have Tom Cruise hanging off the side of a plane.
But but but....Imagine four people go to the movies. Two guys...two girls....One of the guys wants more jokes in his movie, the girls want some of the scenes extended, and the last guy falls asleep. AI Movies, can edit & generate a different version for each person.

In order to use AI a client needs to tell exactly what he wants. Good luck with that. And: a client loves complaining and that works better with a person rather than a device or later a robot that smiles at the client while he is raging 😂

100%-- I've worked as a professional animator for 10 plus years, As long as clients still exist--AI will never fill their needs in one go. At least not in a way that will satisfy them. Clients are very fickle top notch complainers.

I think here that they are both wrong. They see AI as a tool, but they are missing the eventuality of AI making us the tool in the end.
It’s really interesting when you were talking about trends, it made me think of what’s already going on on social media right now (especially platforms like TikTok). When so many people can participate in trends instantaneously, it gets over saturated, and then people get burnt out quickly and move on to the next trend. We’re already seeing the rate of trends rise exponentially! For example a meme/trend used to be popular for years, and now the memes/trends that came out a week or two ago are considered old news. It’s also part of what made me leave platforms like that. It makes me desire to create and consume things that feel more real and original, and I wonder how AI will play a role in it - can it get even faster than it already is? Or, like me, will it encourage more people to slow down?

I have edited from tape to tape to flatbed to NLE, what has never changed is the decision of what makes a truly great cut.
What AI tool did you use for the intro characters? Fun stuff. I think AI will eventually figure out much of the emotional connection aspects of editing too. The current tech is like the first time editors had an NLE where footage still needed to be manually cut to a timecode list. It's just moving so much faster!
AI given task to replicate Hayden edits...
AI Tasks:
Find every sound in every Hayden video ever produced.
Find every piece of music.
Find every cut.
Find every length of all the above.
Cross reference everything. Tone, sounds, length of cuts. When does Hayden prefer music in A versus E and what visuals accompany those choices...and what are the length of the cuts? Now cross reference for every note in all Hayden edits.
Scour Hayden's social media. Cross reference all likes and comments about tv, music, poetry, songs, books, and movies with all Hayden's creations. Look for cross references.
Analyze Haden's favorite editors. Directors. Actors. Creatives. Cross reference a deep dive into each of them with all known Hayden creations.
Now extend that list by another 50 things I've not thought about.
After this bit of work now the AI is ready to begin creating in the style of Hayden. Will it be Hayden? No. But will be Hayden-enough to fool some (which ones?) people into thinking Hayden did the editing?
Can we just train an ai privately on just your own material to recreate faster your own work but also allow for us to make changes to it?

With the exponential growth of tech, it feels impossible to predict how good this stuff is going to get. I mean, you hear folks talk about quantum computing, AGI, the singularity... Lol whose to say all these things will come to fruition, but if they do, I just don't see how we can even begin to imagine how that will affect our perception of reality and our relationship with work, let alone whether or not AI can make video edits as good as humans.
All that said, I enjoyed hearing y'all debate it! Great video guys 😎
Creativity is not at all random. We learn a bunch of stuff then rearrange it to fit a fairly static vision. That's why we can recognize a film from Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, or Sidney Lumet. AI will do exactly the same thing we would do, given some creative constraints.
Listening the second section of the video so the "Ai use trends & formats to create good content", made me think of an anime came out a few years ago, called "Carole and Thuesday". The show talks about music and emotions but it has a massive point in common with the section that I mentioned before: in the anime all the music, is created by AI. I don't wanna really spoiler the anime since i think it's amazing and really deserve a shot but, who saw it can get my point. I truly suggest to give it a try or at least read the plot of it to get my analogy. It's truly interesting how close the argoments are!
Loved Force Awakens. I was a kid when the originals came out. There's a tone, a feeling I wanted when I sat down to watch that movie. And it gave it to me. Also, loved the Star Trek reboot - and I understood the arguments of my Trek friends who said "It's not really a Trek story, it's more of an action flick." I get that and yet I still loved it. In both films I got to be with "friends" from my youth, spend time with them again. They mean so much to me that being with them is a joy. Star Wars did me good. Star Trek did me good. But Indiana Jones failed...I wonder why...
What really differs drawing from editing is that drawing is showing the final frame while editing is showing the relationships between the frames. That is what makes an editing style really hard to perceive by artificial intelligence.

What would even be the training data for an "editing AI"?
Suppose an AI watches a million UA-cam videos.
It will only see the finished end products, not what got cut, and most importantly WHY!
Robots can 100% think forward, please look up reinforcement learning - the processes they’re using are established scientific processes known for decades. And remember, the robots don’t sleep!
What happened to professional photographers when things went from film to digital? Did they die off or did they adapt? You can make a cinema quality feature film on an iPhone... but you need to know what you're doing. The humans/creators that will have an advantage over AI will be those that master the fundamentals.
A few months ago I was thinking about how capable AI could be at writing movie scripts, so I asked ChatGPT to write one for me. I made a video on my YT about the results, although I still think it will take some time for it to truly compete with humans.
I have quite a few artist friends who are worried their jobs are going to be made obsolete by AI. I think we are more likely to be accidentally killed by an unaligned AI than have our jobs completely replaced by them (which is scary, but also slightly funny that we worry more about our jobs than the potential AI existential risk). Very good video! Happy to see you guys have an optimistic view on AI in editing.
The lose purpose is the very deffinition of killing us off.
Most humans live through a purpose. I don't care about jobs to be honest. I even want AI to make a job for me, or to regulate the world as so everybody can live financially at least as humanly as possible. Then I can dedicate al my time to create the things I like without anybody telling me how to to stuff. But this is just a dream.
I don't think these 2 really knows how crazy fast AI could improve , the progress isn't gradual at times
Sometimes one frame of video makes all the difference. Human technology by now haven’t come up with a way to support an ai model to understand all the frames. That means while human can do both loose or tight edits, AI can’t. So far, ai can only loosely compose different frames which contains little information.

What is Creativity?
Would creativity itself just be a conglomerate of all the information we know. eg, the whole steal like an artist concept, except sub conscious?
I feel like at least a massive part of creativity is just this. In that case I believe it's just a matter of time till AI becomes super creative and you can tell it to study 10 different artists and create a new style and then edit a movie.
I think ai will be used as a tool, not taking over fully... you will have to become the "conductor" putting all the pieces together like in classical music. To create your art.

I’m not sure about the S curve. The iPhone stagnated based on human limitation. AI is moving to be able to improve itself and each improvement makes its learning capability increase exponentially. I’m not optimistic this things slowing down haha
It may be unethical for you now, and you may now rather train a human and give them that experience etc like you said. But in this video alone you are using humanless technology to replace tasks that previously were only possible with human labour. The ethical hurdle will pass with time like it has for you two and people in future will shift what is considered ethical. Productivity always wins.

Mr. Brainwash sounds like the self described con man Mark Kostabi back in the 80’s. Celebrities clamored for “his” art that was factory produced by $5 an hour artists and then signed by him. He sold millions of dollars worth and always said that art is cool but money is cooler.

You can’t put a definition on creativity and say “that’s not creativity”.. AI is doing the same thing as humans: remixing existing ideas in new ways to create something new.. anything that creates an emotion is creative
If sports are stories...can one argue that the rules of the sport present "the same format" over and over again? The sports stories are consumed over and over again with no letup in sight.
Maybe its not formats that get tiresome but stories told within that aren't interesting. It's not "freshness," I don't think, that inspires people to watch. ...or, maybe it is if I think of (sticking with the analogy of sports-as-stories) every sporting event as a fresh experience within an old format. The question of sports is: can the characters I care about overcome the challenges? Is that all a story needs to be fresh? I mean, consider a sporting match where you already know one team is going to get blown out...that's not an interesting story, it's a boring one.

I think the thing that people will be, or probably already are, “craving” is the idea of shared human experience. If you connect with art, whether it be film, music, etc., often times it’s because you see yourself inside of the story it’s telling or you empathize with the creator who made it. I think AI tools will mean that you can choose to go into a world that’s genuinely rich, original, creative, etc. but it will be a button to push for a positive feeling. It already exists with things like TikTok and plenty of other algorithms. I have to self regulate to remember to only spend a certain amount of time on it so that I remember to connect with the world immediately around me. I’ve found that focusing on my immediate environment, my own self and body, and the relationships in my life has made me not just happy but also fulfilled. Nevertheless, the dopamine button of genuinely amazing content on the internet, or by the future of ai generated content, will suck a huge swath of the population into it. I hope they don’t get addicted like most people already are with the internet but the truth is that I believe we’re headed there inevitably. Hope you all have people in your life to love! Remember to connect with the humans who make art!
AI can't learn like humans do. At least now. Currently AI is just a huge approximation function, which is trained on data. It does not have real intelligence, creativity, nothing really. That's why it is limited. But I don't want real AI to be created, actually. So maybe that's the limit you talked about where this should stop.

So there are a number of things you say in the video that aren't right. The main advantage humans have is that our brains are significantly more powerful in terms of ability to process than any computer that exists today. Quantum computers may change that for certain types of problems. One of the reasons that humans are so good at creating content for other humans is that we are all pretty similar, what we define as good taste is simply a preference someone has that is shared by some high status group or a large number of people. AI Models do have taste, it's just typically very bad taste in the sense that it's not shared by enough humans to be considered as such. The challenge of AI being creative is trying to model the human brain accurately enough to match taste while running on much less powerful hardware. That sounds like an impossible challenge but it's not, AIs in general are significantly more efficient than the human brain. The brain has lots of redundancies in case you get smacked in the head, left overs from previous stages of evolution and it is hard wired for the environment we evolved in. AIs on the other hand typically have a single focus and we can also take pieces of code used to build one AI and use it in another with no gestation time. That's why we can outclass 3.7 billion years of evolution in a couple of hours.
It's funny that you mentioned what if AI's could make predictions, as that's all that AIs do. Imagine if I wanted an AI that would predict the price that a house would be sold at. I give it the details about each house along with a sale price, then when I give it the details of a house without the sale price it uses the pattern it identified to predict the likely sale price. Humans also do this constantly, as we walk we predict where someone is going to move, it's actually one of the things that we have struggled to model because it's incredibly complex.
AIs can be creative, but usually we try to stop them from doing that, for example Facebook tried to get it's AIs to talk in natural language so humans could understand the interaction but then the AIs started coming up with a new way of communicating that was much faster but was completely incomprehensible to humans. So facebook shut it down, it wasn't being creative in the way we liked. Another example of this is the best chess AI right now, AlphaZero wasn't taught how humans play chess, it was just taught the rules of the game. In its first nine hours of existence, AlphaZero played 44 million games of chess against itself. After two hours, it was better than any human. It independently discovered some common strategies that humans use to play the game but ultimately it invented strategies that we have never seen before to beat us.
In fact, this method of having an AI system that works against itself is becoming popular because it does end up producing much more creative results, that's how the Stable Diffusion/Midjourney AI works, it has one component that is good at recognising art that is good at telling if the art is created by a human or an AI, and the other component that tries to create art that the other can't tell was created by an AI. The loser learns from their mistake. The only difference between a technical game like chess and the act of creating an image that looks like what a human will make is that we don't understand the rules of creating art. We don't know what makes someone really like an image. Which is why we are trying to do things like neural link or use EEGs with AIs hooked up to record what is actually happening in the human brain. The human mind is a complex beast, and the more complex the thing you are trying to model the more you need data.
You mentioned the S curve in product improvements, that eventually you reach a place of diminishing returns with a given technology. Well that works very well when you apply it to a narrow form of technology like iPhone, but it doesn't work quite as well when you broaden the category to personal computing device, or even to tool. There may be an S curve there somewhere but humanity may go extinct before it's realized. Why this matters is that AI doesn't refer to one product, company or technology, it refers to the concept of a system that can replace a human in some way. When you think about it, the process that caused humans to emerge was playing by the same laws of physics we are, it will only be limited by our own ability to create something that surpasses ourselves and so far I think we are doing a pretty good job given we have only had 5-7 million years.
The idea of losing my job is scary but it's easy to understand. I wouldn't get as much money, maybe I'll experience poverty. Maybe my life will not worth living. However what we don't really understand is what happens when 70% of humanity lose their jobs. Let's take this one step at a time, how does an employment office deal with that, too many people waiting outside, how does the police force deal with all the bored people doing stupid shit to fill their time, how do you sell something if only 30% of humanity has money? What happens when 5.6 billion people have nothing they need to do?
I'm a programmer and we programmers often think of our jobs as the last ones to be automated, the funny thing is that most programmers don't really understand the real reason why this is so. The reason is that if an AI can write programs better than we can, then it can build AIs better than we can, which can build AIs better than it can and so on. This is where we get the technological singularity, a system that is increasing in intelligence so much faster than us, that within a short time we can't measure it's intelligence.
Well chat gpt can code, not as well as me, but it's not that far off and it's a heck of a lot faster.
Don't despair though, imagine instead when our singularity meets another created by an alien race after millions of years traveling through space and they exchange art inspired by their biological ancestors.
