Gothic 1 was my very first true rpg. It changed my taste for games forever. It is the reason I still play rpgs
The same for me, after that i continued with other rpg games, but gothic 1 and 2 are still the best

Yo, story of my gamer life! :D played it when i was around 11, about 16y ago just a great game in every aspect for that time. And even now, with mods
My mom used to hide the mouse so I can’t play when she was at work so I can study more. Little did she know I didn’t needed a mouse for Gothic. It marked my childhood and to this day is still the best game I ever played and still playing.
hahaha, almost same for me. Though my mother took the power supply cable, little did she know that I had another one hidden (I bought it from internet cafe)...ahh the childhood. :)

The game was originally made by a small German developer team. And there were six things which made this series fantastic: the gameplay, the chracters, the story, the atmosphere, the music and the voiceacting. And this mod seems to fullfill 5 out of 6. And as a German I would *love* to see that the community in Germany translates the game into German (best case: with lots of the original cast). Don't get me wrong: the Russian voiceacting surely is fantastic but even if I'd understood it I'd prefer the original one due to nostalgia.
Funfact: "Jo Wood" was a small austrian developer team. And "Jo Wood" stands for "Jo"hann Hans "Hölzel(Wood)" aka Falco. About 10 years ago, i had some beers with a developer from Jo Wood and he told me about this.

I am just surprised, how some people could make this great game greatest. All that time they had to spend without taking money. Just very thanks to all these people, who did this amazing job. AWESOME
A game that will always keep special place in my heart. I've Played it so many times. I wish every RPG creator to look at this game and see how legendary games are created.

Current generation of developers are mostly after the money and they don't care if the game is fun or not!
some devs care and alot of devs r being told what to do by there publishers who def r only interested in money
passion always makes for better quality than simple work. almost no invention ever was made by someone who was working 9 to 5 for a company. these science workers often refine stuff, but those who make breakthroughs are those who do it because they like doing it not because they are paid to do it.
Agree and also when small studios become fat cats they usually do crap after crap since the passion is not there anymore!(Hi Bethesda)!
Because they don't have a corporation behind them that constantly tells them that time is money which enables them to focus on actually getting stuff done.

You know what happened about a few months ago? I had a very realistic dream that I was playing a new addon for Gothic 2. It was very well made but the experience was kind of surreal. I played Velaya a few years ago but I couldn't imagine something made on this scale!
One more thing. Did you know that CDPR lets players use their 3D models in games? I am sure you can find all sorts of useful textures in TW1, 2 and 3. The style is quite similar.

That's really cool but at the same time i found it is sad since the current generation of developers cannot capture the essence of what true and engrossing video game is all about. The last time i was amazed at a game was the witcher 3 and i honestly think they are the last real game developer out there who know how to capture the essence of what a video game is!
Well, I got what you mean, but things are not so bad actually. Such "kind" of developers just moved to indie and lesser studios sector. Witcher 3 is not the last example. Only in this year - Hellblade and Divinity II: Original Sin. Original Sin is simply brethtaking. We just need t osupport such kind of companies, like CDPR, Ninja Theory, Larian Studios etc. I will btw soon release video about that.
Try Elex its also done by PiranhaBytes and its much much closer to Gothic 1 and 2, and Risen 1 than the later titles and is immense fun.
It also has a bit of the same clunkyness of Gothic 1/2 so a typical PiranhaBytes game :D
Jeah, u should really try ELEX(10/2017) out! As Lunatic108 said, its from the same Developers , Gothic 1/2/3 and Risen are.
It gave me the old Gothic feeling back, but i have to admit, the first 2-5 hours of Elex are the worst part. After the first few Hours u will love it :)

This is hands down the game i played the most. Finished it about 20 times by now. Got it again a few months ago and its still awesome. Hope they make an actuall Gothic game again. None of that gothic 3 and 4 bullshit

I love Gothic 2 and maybe have to make some new videos from it again, sometime soon :) So great they've reinvented that beautiful game :) Thumbs up and BIG like for the creators who did this absolutely for free!
1. There needs to be the option to turn off Russian voice acting. I gladly take no voices over listening to Russian.
2. Polished English subtitles are necessary. I'm not playing the game translated by google.

2023 we got steam workshop support for a while now, base game has been fixed by PB...Directx11, Union, Ninja... all the mods created by the passionate fanbase... Pretty incredible

Guys it would be simply impossible to have no navigation in such huge world like the one from witcher. You still can disable the minimap etc in the game menu, so feel free to try it out. Learning the locations that you dont need to visit 50 times like in Gothic, multiplying by the number of locations results in probably thousands of hours of gaming
I haven't played it yet but the Russian voice acting gives me an idea:
What if there was a new area that was shaped around Russian culture instead of German? What would an Eastern Orthodox-inspired cult of Innos look like? What about their mages? What kind of armor would paladins wear? I think that has a lot of potential!

Hey there!
1. Well, ofc, it's highly recommended - all 3 games have same storyline. Gothic 2 is starting straight after Gothic 1 story, Gothic 3 - after Gothic 2. Gothic 1 may look like a pixel game for you now, ofc, but it's still great as game in overall so yes, if you want my opinion - play it for sure, because most of your friends and other main/secondary characters will be in Gothic 2 (and Gothic 3) as well.
2. I'd say play vanilla at least a bit, to undertand the game and base things, for example, finish just the chapter #1 (there are 6 in vanilla Gothic 2). Then go to Returning.
3. It's in Russian as it's done by russian modders, but, as I've said in video, there's an English subtitles translation for it. So that's not a problem - you can play without problems. I will release installation guide for English players tomorrow.
Thanks! I just grabbed the whole collection for cheap. One more question. I noticed that my copy of Gothic 2 has the Night of the Raven expansion. I'm reading that most people recommend to play without it and you can patch your game to remove it. Do you think I should play without it?

Night of The Raven was planned way before the release of the vanilla game.
There are places and characters that felt useless before, suddenly they make sense.

I absolutely LOVE the Gothic series! Its such a shame that Gothic3 was such a mess.
When it came out it was the hardest thing I'd ever played up to that point, I think it still is.
it is, but this game requires you take your time... like getting first better armour before fighting some enemies.. some people were moaning that they couldn't beat Orcs in chapter 2.. I was like.. duh.. first get better armor and then you can think to beat them. But als in chapter 2 it's required that you guide Diego back to enterance to Korinis and he helps you to defeat some Orcs on your way. Was easy Experience gaining system and then you level up already. And then going back and doing more quests etc. etc.. it's all about timing in Gothic 2 that's for sure
Im from Poland and i consider Gothic 2 as the Best game ever played Absolutely changed my life :D

Playing gothic with your remasters is as mandatory as playing stalker with autumn aurora, just make it pretty because everything else is already there. Modding an elder scroll is way more of a hassle since there is so much gameplay or immersion to improve. Maybe that s why they are so great : 20 years later they just need some graphic update to stay above anything else in the same genre
I really loved the idea, and I must admit that the result is absolutely awesome! Honestly I preferred the original combat system, but that's not so important. What I really found annoying instead, is the impossibility to use the marvin mode as in vanilla Gothic: I completed the game a lot of times, and when it comes for me to start a new game, there are some abilities or items i want to start with. Or unique armors as well. Too bad, I can't see a valid reason to make it so useless

Sinitar Gaming I didn’t think my comment was so difficult to understand... I’ll try to make it easier, since it seems you didn’t get the message: after playing the same game a lot of times, and having also other things to do during the day, maybe skipping some parts that may result a little boring is not that bad. Besides, if you want immortality or money or LP or wathever, you can still acquire them via cheat engine so eliminating marvin-mode doesn’t remove this aspect. The irritating thing is that if I want a specific armor because I like it, I can’t have it, while with marvin mode i just had to possess an NPC.
I DID get your msg. How you are playing is called "cheating". Returning is not for cheaters. Simple.

Gothic 1 has much more poort storyline and gameplay mechanics to "hook" for to start exapnding it. I think that's why Gothic 2 was chosen.
Exactly my thoughts at the G1/2 controls.
They may be a bit chunky, but they make sense and with becoming better and understanding the combat system, this controls allow you to create a very own combat style, which I think is very cool. You don't just master the enemies by letting your character becoming better, but by increasing your own skill, too.
And when you then see not only the unknowns heros, but your own progress, it's a satisfaction, that I didn't had in other games...
Bronco Xy Gothic 2 controls are good, but Gothic 1 is just... I mean come on no mouse support? Even Arena had mouse support.

I never knew what the hell I was supposed to do, managed to do some blacksmithing work, become a mercenary then run into a bunch of orcs and die. Buy all transformation scrolls and try to get past the orcs that way, just to die by the drake monsters xD
If you liked Gothic, you maybe played Spellforce aswell. Another great game from that era.
Just saw this and will definitely play it when I have 250 hours of free time. Gothic 2 is among my top 3 RPGs. Truly a masterpiece.
I finished Gothic 3 a few years ago now and I really liked the game, I wanted to do Gothic 2 then but I had to put it aside I do not know why anymore.This is the perfect opportunity for me to finally do it !
If you enjoyed Gothic 3, you'll love going backwards in the series - in my opinion, 1 and 2 are MUCH more fun than Gothic 3! The first risen game is also very reminiscent of the older gothic games, and comes recommended too!

Unbelievable! People actually spent countless hours to do all this for free! How i wish there was English VA. I'm currently doing yet another play through of the original as i do every year or so. Maybe after im done with the originals, ill try installing this just for gameplay purposes. Thanks man!
You're welcome! English VA won't come, at all. Don't wait for it. After you play Returning at least 3-4 hours you simply won't be even able to play 1 minute of original game :)
Gothic 2 on new engine, it would be mind blown.
But look @ gothic 1 remake.. horrible. The awesome OST is gone... and the character design is also horrid. I don't even want to play with that main character. They totally don't get the fans
My 1st love was G2 :) . Love that game . After that G1 . G3 wasent what I expected . R1 , R2 , R3 pretty cool too . Elex , I like this game a lot too . I tried R 2.0 . Pretty huge and kinds confusing , at times . I havent finnshed it cuz I tried ”In the name of the king ” and actually like the hole idea and I still have to finish it , stuck in Varant .
A true jewel of of the genre! Huge world with hidden places and the freedom to explore and complete your quests all based on your choice! The game is amazing!
It IS special for many of us too. You know? When a group of people decide to make the HUGe effort (for FREE) to commit to such a big MOD (As big, or bigger than the game itself), then it's confirmed that the original game is indeed incredibly valuable!!! And, just after 17 hours of playing in chapter I, I already enjoy this so much. It is so well done. OMG!! I love it so much when people do stuff out of passion, and NOT money (like that obnoxious Gothic I Remake, which I already know it will be a fail and way worse than this mod, inspite of good graphics and better tools and gameplay features)...

Better Graphic and Bug Fixes is totally enough. Any more programming an adding of the game (additional Animation as mentioned and shown in the Video, and several interaction Possibilities) change the actual Game far to drastical. Its almost as if you create a game, based on a Game, that was already created by others.

Polska drużyna robiła spolszczenie, ale przestała, bo za dużo ludzi spamowało o datę premiery spolszczenia. [Eng] Polish team was making Polish subtitles, but they stopped, because everyone was spamming questions with date of premiere of the subs.
typowe cebulaczki, najlepiej cos robic i nic nie mowic
Jeśli o R2.0 chodzi to spolszczenie zostało przerwane nie głównie przez spam a przez to że ciągle wychodziło nowe patche do R2.0, przez co trzeba by było ciągle kopiować tłumaczenie na nowsze wersje. Obecnie nasi tłumacze pracują nad innym modem, "Odyseja - w imieniu króla" i przed przetłumaczeniem tego moda nad R2.0 nie myślimy.
A nie lepiej wydać spolszczenie bez patrzenia na patche? Jest spolszczenie np. do wersji 1.0, i teraz wyszedł patch 1.1. To zamiast aktualizować spolszczenie, po prostu wydać je na wersje 1.0 i tyle. Da się żyć z kilkoma błędami.

I want this so bad :) I was introduced to Gothic through Gothic 2, when a company I worked for was trying to get the rights to port it to the Mac. Piranha Bytes said yes and really wanted us to do it (Linux too !)... but Jowood said no :( PB were actually pretty pissed about it at the time.

вышло дополнение к Returning 2.0 называется Ret2 Alternative Balance. добавили много мелочей(настраиваемый уровень сложности) и доспехи сделали более красивыми особенно у паладинов (came out an addition to the Returning 2.0 is called Ret2 Alternative Balance. added a lot of small things(customizable difficulty level) and armor made more beautiful especially in paladins)

Но увы по моему скромному мнению сие дополнение ужасно, и балансом там не пахнет. Абсолютно наоборот - оно оказуаливает мод и убирает некоторые требования для действий и механики из оригинальной игры в целом. Уже одна только возможность учить круги магии без привязки - это бессмыслица, ведь это механика самой готики как таковой. Это дополнение сделано в большей степени человеком, не имеющим никакого отношения к разработке мода и решившему поймать немного лойсов на форуме, сделав этот аддон и понатыкав в него рандомных облегчающих изменений.
Поэтому я играю без него и никому его не рекомендую. Хотя тут конечно Ваше право =)
ничто не мешает изучать теже круги только с определённой главы) хотя я больше всего жду от этого мода то что на плато древних добавят призрака эр"хазира который будет подсказывать что делать)

You need to make a video on xere's return. It's like returning. It adds 400 quests, New areas, New guilds with their own exclusive story, a new alternative main story, and 200 hours of gameplay
Xeres Return is a low-quality mod with some stolen mechanics and mediocre storiline. Its not even 25% same as Returning, unfortunately.

Gothic 1-2 where so nice and sure hold me focused in game more tham 250 hours, cause i wantet to know every sin gle part and story from the games.

The works you have put into the game look absolutely astonishing!! I just doubt that I will ever play it, since there seems to be several times more Addon content than original game content, and the mods that have tried this step before you always failed, since the world didn`t feel like Gothic any more, more like another game that took me too far away from the main story and lacked depth. Maybe I am wrong, and I hope you guys were able to pull something off that no one else could! Still, the game mehanics you added and the overall graphic improvements seem amazing! Great work you guys!

in my opinion, the secret of Gothic's visual greatness bases on the perfect mix of a fairy idyll with earthiness and reality. and while the new graphic is surely impressive, it tells a different story.
Nothing lore-unfriendly was added to the game objects, like at all. It's just graphics enhancement part of the mod :) You can rollback to vanilla textures if you want this, btw, there are some "patches" for this.

If you can change difficulty to make it easier, then it's not Gothic! These games are about overcoming the obstacles by yourself, smart leveling and training, understanding the combat system and the enemy patterns, learning from your mistakes so you can fight back... and when you're ready to kick ass it's the most satisfying experience in an rpg. Having a difficulty swap system ruin the whole idea of Gothic!
Game difficulty is chosen once in the beginning of a game and can't be changed ingame. Nothing is ruined. And if you're thinking Returning will be easy...well...try to reach the city from Xardas tower. Then return here.
i want a remaster of gothic 3, i played it a couple of years ago, it was buggy as hell, but i stopped only after my saves got corrupted
+MattStormage there a lot of great mods fpr G3 that are fixing every bug and improve tjr game
MattStormage The version that is sold nowadays already includes all necessary patches (even unofficial ones), added by the devs themselves, to play the game properly.
If you have a copy of the game already then look for the unofficial g3-patch that fixes nearly every bug the game used to have.
You can even add a mod that gives you access to unreleased content.
The modding-community of this game is truly amazing.

Looks awesome but I always prefered Morrowind. It's weird because Gothic in Poland was always very liked and considered everyones favourite RPG. Maybe Ill give it another chance to see if my Country mate were right. Great video Sinitar :D
