2-in-1 Guard & Feather Board: Installing Shopsmith's Innovative Jointer Upgrade

  • Woodworking jointer upgrade, feather board and guard in one unit. I install and test Shopsmith Jointer Feather Guard upgrade kit. The original spring on this 40 year old jointer no longer reliably returns the guard over the blades. In my book, that's a good excuse to make an upgrade.

    Well, this is one of your earlier videos that I missed. I am glad that you still have them available. I miss you and thank you for your contributions to the Shopsmith family, Tom

    Great video. I am getting ready to install the new guard on an old jointer that I've rebuilt, so I looked up your video to review the procedures. It's great to be able to watch someone do the job that you need to do before you do it. Thanks.

    Great vid and an excellent upgrade. My sister just purchased a SS with an old jointer that doesn't have a feather guard and this upgrade is the first thing I'm suggesting she do. Scott

      Yeah, I saw you pic in your community tab, congrats to your sister! I'm liking the upgrade so far. And I don't think I've seen anything like on any other make of jointer.

    Thanks for the video. Just happened to run across it. I have the older version of the jointer and had purchased the upgrade. I don't have the problem you had, just wanted to upgrade it. Haven't installed it yet because I've never done the drill and tap thing and was concerned that I will screw it up. Glad to see your video, maybe I'll tackle it soon after the holidays.

      I really like the upgrade. I agree tapping the thread is intimidating, but there are probably some tip videos that cover it.

      Thanks Bill. A couple months have gone by now and I can say I am really glad I did this upgrade. Not only does it resolve the safety concern I had with the old broken guard, I am much more easily getting square corners due to that feather board.

    I just went back and re-watched this. So did you add the dust chute retrofit kit (includes the coupler guard and rear blade guard) or was it already installed?
    The retrofit kit is obviously not original because the outfeed table has the hex hole to move the blade guard to the rear for rabbeting. I ask because I find it odd that if you didn't install the retrofit kit, that the previous owner did, but didn't also upgrade to the feather guard as well.
    I believe the dust chute and rear guards were put in to production at the same time the feather guard was introduced, which were all standard on a new jointer from then on.

    • @woodshopnerdery
      @woodshopnerdery  3 роки тому +1

      Chad - I don't know the answer for sure. The jointer came to be with the dust chute only. Based on the jointers age, I do not think the dust chute is original. The name plate lists the old Vandalia address so does that make it later 70's early 80's?
      Long before I started the UA-cam channel, I added the rear fence blade guard and the coupling guard. I bought both new from SS separate from a dust chute, perhaps from the Service Parts catalog? I don't remember for sure.

    Yet another great video in the can!
    So, what convinced you to go with the Shopsmith quick index quill handle, and not the one Geoffrey Baker sells?
    I myself have been debating on that upgrade as well. I've seen Scott Markwood's review and option on Geoffrey's handle upgrade.
    I'd be interested of your option and review of the Shopsmith handle upgrade, very interested. Future video, perhaps?
    With that information I might be able to come to a decision. Thank you in advance, Thomas.

      Thanks for the compliments and comments Chad. Really, I could have gone either way when it comes to Geoffery's vs Shopsmith's quick index quill. But, there was a slight tipping of the scales to Shopsmith; 1. I saw the SS Quick Index in person at a Lowes demo 2-3 years ago. 2. I like to support SS when it makes sense, but not blindly. 3. SS had the pyramid sale so if I added the SS quill it put the order over the thresh hold to get $25 off instead of $10 off.
      Also, I am not precluded from getting one of Geoffery's in the future and having both. Note, I did watch MGR's video on this carefully and I do follow Geoffery's intelligent contributions to the Facebook group.

    To fix the original guard, check the spring tension, not hard to do... but the better idea is to just replace the guard... Now, I have a question that maybe you could answer... the infeed of my jointer is slanted downward towards the tail, any ideas of how to fix it? Please?

    • @woodshopnerdery
      @woodshopnerdery  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting Me58651. I agree with you, an easy fix is to retention the spring. I did that myself maybe a dozen times in the last six months. It kept popping out of the socket because it was so bent out of shape it would not seat properly.
      Regarding the infeed table, it should lower, relative to the outfeed table, to set the depth of cut but should always be parallel to the outfeed table. The infeed slides up and down an inclined set of grooves, maybe some debris is caught in those grooves cause it to slant? If it were me the first thing I would try, with the machine off and disconnected, is run the infeed table up and down all the way a few times. That may clear any debris. Second thing I would try is to take some pictures and post it to the Shopsmith owner's group over on Facebook.
      Here is a Shopsmith Forum post discussing a similar issue. forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=15457

    and the Jointer is the only shopsmith tool I got hurt on, only because after aligning the blades I didn't turn up the speed to the appropriate level while testing it out.... thank GOD the drive broke, it could have been worse than a black and blue knuckle.
