After watching your video, i did some work to my boat. im not able to purchase an adjustable Jack plate at this time, after alot of research, i found that raising the motor so that the cavitation plate is just above the deadrise or the straight path back from flat on the hull. i just finished my project and am about to give her a sea trial, lol. also just above the raw water intakes on the lower unit, Your vids have been very valuable to me, what a great channel, thanks my friend.

I got really worried for you when you throttled it up with the motor all the way down. The amount of additional drag created by doing that was incredible and evident by all the water rising up between the swivel bracket and transom. Interesting experiment though.

Nice work. if you are pleased with that prop, lose that cheap fin you have attached. They are typically just a band aid for a poor set up. That 40 with the right prop and that jackplate is all you need to get on plane as fast as you'll ever get. Your top speed would likely increase without it.

My question is the transom on your boat. Is it all welded aluminum or is it wood? Do you have extra braces or just the two transom arms?
You’re the only guy I’ve seen do this, if you could get with me that would be greatly appreciated! Thank you and appreciate your content!

With fully lowered motor there's too much lower leg water drag against it and huge water rising hi that accounts for that huge top speed loss. Ideal motor/transom height match is achieved when middle water flow skims at speed right under the small upper plate at plane while motor sits fully vertical on transom and deck load is evenly distributed.
Prop will achieve best prop thrust on all water cond and close turns at speed. If the doel fin installed does not run parallel to water level when combo is on plane will achieve extra water drag on fin and slow motor down.
Without an induction tach installed side of throttle grip won't know which was the max wot rpm achieved and if motor revs at least middle to max wot rpm factory stated. It's important to know this.

did you have any worry's about the added weight of a jack plate and long shaft motor on such a light boat ?? I am in the middle of refitting a J14 carolina skiff tiller steer with 25 /Mercury 2 stroke .. to a center console remote steering 30 HP mercury 20 inch shaft electric start power trim/tilt , and using a Q3 center console with built in live well and flip cooler seat . i' am just raising my transom with some kings Starboard 2 inch thick then sliding a 3/16 inch stainless steel u shape plat over the transom to well below mounting bolts and clamps . what I am wondering about is the weight and how far forward I might have to go with the seat n console ….your aluminum boat seems to sit well in the water and with your weight being to the rear of the boat seems to have no problem so by me shift my weight some 2 feet forward from transom ? I'm thinking I should be just fine as long as my cavation plate is in line bottom of my hull .weight might not be an issue even tho the motor seems significantly heavier. whats you r opinion ??

Do you get these motors with tillers on the or do you put them on?

Jackplate’s obviously increase efficacy at higher speeds, but could they also be used to reduce fuel consumption, effectively extending maximum range at lower speeds? I’m curious how various engine/prop heights would affect fuel consumption at a specific cruising speed. Say, 10 MPH.

decrease in drag means better economy. Right length shaft will save you cost, hassle and weight

I recently bought a RIB which calls for a 15” shaft motor. However, I couldn’t pass up a great deal and ended with a Yamaha f9.9 20” shaft. Should I get a jack plate or is it ok if I run the boat with the Yamaha 20” shaft? Any cons?

Why not just mount the motor at the height the jack plate performed best at??? why would you want to return the motor to the low position were it performed the worst? Get rid of the multi position high dollar jack plate and just mount the motor higher on a fixed aluminum mounting plate!!

@that boat guy so I have a 200 hp yamaha v6. Can I take the oil injection system off of the motor and just use premixed ? Or would that not be a good idea because of the large fuel tank. Help

Does the jack plate play any difference in how the boat rides? (As far as trim) I'm looking for a solution to my boat, at 3/4 throttle and above, my bow digs in too much and my trim is adjusted all of the way out

you need to play with the height just a bit so you can find the sweet spot for it to run the best, without putting too much strain on the transom
