This was a soldiers truce, these men shared the frozen mud, the snow covered trenches surrounded by their dead comrades and longing to be home for the Holidays. Here their humanity rose above the insanity just for a little while and they shared their common bonds together. The Generals and leaders made sure this never happened again and punished many of these men for this, most of them never made it home from the war. It is harder to kill someone who you share a common bound with and these men had more in common together than they did with their Generals or political leaders. As a vet I can tell you the hardest thing to hold onto in war is your humanity and these men showed courage more than any of the General safe behind the lines ever did. Sabaton as usual makes you feel what the human experience of great events are all about not the "facts" fund in dusty history books. This is a Christmas song but also a song of Remembrance for all those who never returned home from war (11/11 just passed as the day to remember). The fact that Floor sings the Aria during the closing credit is so fitting, the Valkyrie Goddess claiming the fallen from the battlefield and taking them home. May we never forget but also remember that these men were able to put aside their difference and share their humanity a lesson that we living should strive to match. Happy holidays to all and peace to those lost to the Holiday seasons and their friends and families who are left with their memories to comfort them through it.
On Christmas in 1914 troops in the trenches in Belgium started singing Christmas carols (I think the Germans were first) and then they were answered by the other troops (British) singing the same carols. This led to an unofficial truce and the soldiers meet in no man's land. As a 20 year veteran myself this song is very emotional and reminds me of the brotherhood that I shared with my fellow sailors and soldiers. The cross at the end is actually on the real battlefield as a reminder of the Christmas truce and a moment of humanity.
as @rnowak85 said before, this actually happened, and the band had the idea for the song for years, but it took years to be finished and became what it is now...

That cross still stands at the exact place it was erected in 1914 at the side of a nowadays field, not the original anymore, but a replica. The location is in the middle of what used to be the no man's land during the first battle of Ypres, it is located near Commines-Warneton (Belgium) not far from the French border, not one day passes without fresh flowers, or even footballs being placed at the base of the cross, remembrance counts! Lest we forget

The reality is that Just like Sabaton to bring truth to their songs, this did happen in December 1914, the last time this would ever happen in history and warfare, it included carols singing, football games, food and alcohol exchanges, gift giving, burials/funerals, prisoner exchanges and most importantly peace for 2 days by soldiers from Britain (UK), French Republic (France), German Empire (Germany), Austria-Hungarian Empire (Austria and Hungary), Russian Empire (Russia) and their respective affiliated allies, it was attempted in 1915 but only a very few units made it happen, in this celebration all soldiers stopped fighting and were as brothers

I very strongly recommend that you keep watching all Sabaton music videos to the very end. They like to hide some easter-eggs in there - such as in this case the cameo of Nightwish's Floor Janssen - which adds another layer to this song since Christmas is about being with those you love - in this case her and her husband (Sabaton's drummer) being together for this project.
@WallyTheBandit: I have another power metal band for you to react to! The band I am recommending is Unleash the Archers, an award-winning power metal band from Vancouver, Canada. Unleash the Archers won a Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) earlier this year for Best Metal Album of 2020, for their most recent album, _Abyss._ Since you like vocalists that sing without instruments for part of a song, then I will recommend Northwest Passage by Unleash the Archers, since this song sounds like a sea shanty of sorts, where a church choir turns into a metal band. Give 'em a listen -- I think you'll really like 'em!

I've seen a few reactors who stopped before it was finished, and they have therefore missed out, sometimes the best parts! Would be a shame if you did the same.. They also have a second channel, Sabaton history, where you can learn more. Since they write songs based on true historical war events, they have, in their history channel, made videos that tells you more about the story and history behind the songs. You will learn a lot! With that said, let me give you a few songs to get you started. Last stand, Great War, Swedish pagans, Carolus Rex, Night witches (animated story video), No bullets fly (animated story video), Steel commanders, The war to end all wars, yeah the list is long..... The sad thing is about Christmas Day 1914, not every section of the western front had a truce. Some sections continued fighting, others used the day to bury the dead that was left in no mans land from the fighting. The leaders of the units that had the truce moved the men around so that the following year this would never happen, they even went as far as issue a standing order that anyone attempting such an act of "treason" would be shot in front of a firing squad. Though I would highly recommend the Sabaton History Channel if you want to know the stories behind any of the Sabaton songs including the full story of the Christmas Truce 1914.
The reason why most people who get into Sabaton is that their songs are engaging. The music is a hook and the lyrics grab you emotionally. Great reaction Wally.🤘🎸🎸
Great Reaction, for more on this topic there is a decent movie (2005) "Joyeux Noel" (Merry Christmas) shows the German, French & British (well a Scottish unit) , sadly when word of these events got out many units were punished and relocated to other sections of the line were the fighting was more savage. and then they made sure on holidays they would launch attacks and such. but the war took a turn and got more deadly esp once GAS started to be used in 1915 some soldier tried to repeat the event of 1914 but were shot .

If we still had music channels like MTV or CMT working like they once did, this would be one of the top Christmas songs of the year. Period, end of discussion. The music alone is incredible, but once you add the video I don't see how any other could hold out. Unfortunately, 1914 was the last time such a truce was permitted. The Pope had called for both sides to respect the Christ on this one day, since all the nations involved were in theory Christian nations. The leaders had refused, however that day section leaders chose to abide by his request. Not every section, some continued fighting the whole day, in others there was a ceasefire, but not a truce, and in some cases one soldier or officer would try to request the truce as we saw here, and the soldiers on the other side shot them down. But, in a few places, for one day the killing stopped. The upper command was not pleased. Previously, short ceasefires and truces had been called to permit the burial of the dead, treatment of the wounded and such. After this, those were ended. Officers who had permitted the truce were transfered out, soldiers were shifted so as to not be facing people that they had met, and artillery was ordered to maintain bombardment of the zone during days like Easter and Christmas so no further truces could happen. Senior officers who had supported the Christmas Truce were retired or charged with disobedience. In over a century since that day, there has never again been a Christmas Truce. The cross they show at the end actually exists, in a small town in France. I hope one day we will find a way to remember that day, and perhaps, stop shooting for a single 24 hours.
