Or at the very least, it needs to go back to being niche. I don't want to see 5 year old girls singing Sexyy Red.
Too bad. They want 5 yr olds singing wap
How is that different from Salt and Peppa saying “push it real good”

Big facts. It’s not that it shouldn’t exist or be promoted, but the lack of balance is WILD
Gotta Dee1 he isn't not losing himself to the negative dialogue. Very careful with his words and phrases
I don't think people realize how music affects your spirit. If you ever heard a song that makes you sad or conversely; makes you happy, Then you should know how music affects the soul. Music inspires and as I've grown; ratchet music speaks to me less.
The Holy Bible alludes to Satan being some sort of musical entity. Although we don't know what it means for sure, one verse referring to Satan says ....“The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created,”

I so agree with Dee-1. I'm a DJ and I will never play ratchet music! You had a whole era of music in the 90s and early 2000s, where we partied HARD!!! Its so possible. The industry, radio,, and media changed the narrative to what is hot and whats not. Whats changing the narrative is independent artist promoting themselves!
"Back Dat Azz Up" didn't go into detail about Juveniles unbalanced pH levels, or his vaginal discharge.
😮 I see..what u did there
What sexy redd song you listening to?
So it’s how raunchy it is
Even then why are we falling into the box of we need songs you ‘can throw ass to’
This is like saying ‘I would make music that would help my community but we need to have music you can throw booty to’
@@tofamous13idk but she got a color of lipstick she named discharge yellow
People are getting mad at Dee1, but y'all are the same dudes that complain in Redpill comments, talking about the rachet women, and you became Passport bro because of these women! Make it make sense
To me, the problem is balance. Back in the day, you could have Back that Ass Up playing next to Slippin' by DMX on the radio. Now, you only get one side of hip-hop and not enough of the other. Now people think hip-hop is only one way
Spot on
Your absolutely right.
If you were around in the late '80s early '90s they did have fun uptempo Rap music made for dancing a great examples was kid N Play and Salt & Peppa
80s/90s and Uptempo music as in……Luke?…which is also ratchet
@JEightt I'm not taking about Luke I wrote kid N Play and Salt N Peppa they made fun lyrical no cursing rap that you can dance too
Salt n Peppa are two freaky frogs also fr 😂
@pepkravitztv555 that came later in the mid to late '80s they we're about having fun dance routes in the mid to late '80s did you say freaky frogs 😆 🤣 😂

Bro everybody in the comments is so slow smh we can’t be this slow… It’s nothing wrong with party music we just need a BALANCE… we’ve always had a balance up until now.
Up until now??? There is balance, it’s plenty to choose from unless you’re solely depending on mainstream, but dee 1 ain’t talking about balance
@@TrojuanHenderson you’re missing the point.. Its not but even if it was a balance right now, its not being promoted on the same magnitude as rachet music come on now we all know thats not true…
Depends on how you define “party music”. If you can’t party to it around your children and grandparents then it shouldn’t be made in my opinion. Saying we need a balance for the degeneracy lane in the music is the problem. In some cultures it’s completely frowned upon because it’s no need for it and it’s a detriment to their culture. Saying we need a balance for filth to have a lane is wild.
@@beach_boy1141 I completely agree with you but I’m just being realistic since rachet music isn’t going anywhere anytime soon I would rather hear more uplifting positive music in the mainstream as well but tbh we know that’s not gonna happen at this point the music industry is demonic.
Difference between party music and prostitute music
Life is about balance. Yin & Yang
You can have a$$ shaking music that doesnt have to be super gutter. Some of the a$$ shaking music now is low level stripper music and I mean low level. Missy Elliot mad great dancing songs.
Exactly everything don't have to be the lowest of the lowest missy had raunchy music but it was hella creative
Coming in hot by Andy Mineo and Lecrae
“Big boats don’t turn fast in the harbor” you got to keep this in mind as you create things, in ALL things. Peace.
thats a word
Dee1 proves that music can change…but the industry…the promoters…and the people don’t want to hear positive music…they don’t want it to change
Nothing cool about prostitution rap. It’s disgusting
😂
Well said. Give em what they need.
Not if THEY don’t feel THAT’S what they NEED
“Throwing booty” is the problem. That’s the reason they couldn’t find a song that doesn’t have those types of lyrics that people still “throw booty” to. What’s being said in the lyrics is the reflection to the behavior.
Booty songs will always be a part of black culture. Since Africa we’ve been fascinated with the booty. I just don’t want 90% of the songs we hear now be on the booty topic. Mix it up. Balance
@@jjj0026 If it was a good thing u wouldn’t be saying we need balance. Part of you knows it’s not a good thing. I’m the type of person that thinks we should x out anything not good. If you think it’s unacceptable to do it in front of elders and children then we shouldn’t be doing it at all…..that’s just my rule of thumb.
@@beach_boy1141but why is throwing booty a bad thing?
@getsomemoney2433 it's not. It's showing and allowing kids to do it and glamorize it
Throwing ass is not inherently bad lmfaooo this is a silly convo on Kevs part. It’s lines like “put a Molly in her drink, she ain’t even know it” is where we gotta start
Exactly. I am not remotely a "turn up" person, but the "negative" aspects of Hip-Hop that need to be addressed are the violence, misogyny, etc; not women who are just wanting to turn up in their music.
@@Mrballerize It's not even that the misogyny and violence shouldn't be existent at all (not saying that's what you meant). I was watching the original 'House Party' the other day and noticing how the friend who was drinking ended up passing out and pretty much embarassing himself. The love interest wouldn't have sex with the main character because he had no condom. Basically, though these kids get into all kind of trouble the script manages to still show them as trying to be responsible in certain ways and the music of the time reflected those values much more as well. Same with 'Boyz n the Hood.' The key word I'd say dee is pushing is 'morals' and it's really telling where we are as a culture when he's getting such a hard pushback for asking for it.
Is it good though? Especially the contexts in which it's the most popular?
@@milesmungo I feel it’s a neutral behavior, and it’s the culture of drugs and debauchery that make it “bad”. So kinda like you’re saying, it’s the context around it, not the act itself.
@@jakemorrow6742 it’s not inherently wrong to YOU. In some cultures it’s wrong. Those cultures that think it’s wrong are better off than us.
Literally Outkast - Hey Ya. Will get any room dancing. It could be considered an anthem right up there with back that thang up without the ratchet connotations.

Don’t NOBODY WANNA HEAR THAT SHIT😭
Naw. They throw ass to Summertime. We love that song.
All in all, balance is key. Music can have its rachetness and it also can have some meaningful approaches. In real life, always being in the club is not beneficial unless it's work related. Being at home not being outdoors is not beneficial as well. Artists just need to have a balance.
Dee-1 you’re a true soldier 🫡
The negative influence on modern rap is undeniable, but it’s bigger than you D. That’s why I salute you.
You can see the rulers army and false idols and still say I won’t bow.
I’m with you 100 ain’t been the club in years, don’t support artists poisoning my brain nor my brother’s and sister’s
We need to start talking bout who owns these labels. If they black they need to be held accountable to. But let’s be real most of em ain’t. Sexy Redd, Latto, Ice Spice we’re all once little girls. Probably looking up to Nicki, Cardi and Meg. They see the lifestyle change and it’s hard to see how you must sell your soul (metaphorically) and poison your people to do it.
We need reform in the black community. I think the best course is likeminded black people building communities and showing it doesn’t have to be like that.
Kev is too old to be endorsing such foolishness
Cuz he still on some lil boy shit internally! He gets paid to speak on a culture he don't even live, nor is apart of his heritage so he don't give a fucc how this evil ratchet shit destroying our kids. Real spill!
😂
This era of music just exposed how many low vibrational humans needs spiritual guidance. It’s a different between having fun and trying to fill a void
Musicians aren’t role models…we need to take some responsibility. Words of Malcom X. Our issue is worshiping these ENTERTAINERS. Nothing more
Thank you!!!!!!
I remember growing up during the 2000s we had so much fun music and so much variety and music for all different tastes being pushed. Now it’s the same shit being pushed all day. I remember when Soulja boy first came out we had hella fun with all the dances that spawned and his early songs had barely any cursing in it. Middle school was a vibe. Music now be depressing and riddled with dysfunction and violence 24/7
How is it being “pushed”? We literallly have so many outlets now to specifically CHOOSE what YOU want to listen to
Skee-Low made several songs that you can dance to, that are pretty clean
Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince, Skee-Lo, Chubb Rock, Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, MC Hammer, Heavy D, Black Eyed Peas, some of Luda's tracks wasn't super ratchet and were still danceable. A lot of people don't even realize that's Public Enemy playing at the party in 'House Party' (Can't Do Nuttin' for Ya Man). It's just like people thinking you can't eat good because you became vegetarian or vegan. You'll actually eat BETTER once you realize how much you've been reliant on meat (ratchet/raunchy) and how much variety and alternatives there are out there....
Dee-1 is legit; that boy can spit. Great message✊🏾
Ratchet music is a result, it's not a cause.
When the black communities priorities shift to something more productive and functional and stable then ratchet music will go away on its own. Many things need to be transcended but a lot of us aren't willing to do the work
That healthy dummy bar was crazy🔥🔥
It’s duality to life, “spiritualists” should know this. ☯️
Dee1 has a point, a musician can influence what’s considered a club jam. Example……as soon as we heard that sample of Jesse Jackson saying…..”Brothers and Sistahs…..” people sprinted to floor, booty popping, legs and arms going, etc. Rebel without Pause and that socially conscious sound became the underground club hit before Fight the power at the same time that LUKE was out. Tribe then literally flipped the script with an almost slow jam tempo that set the clubs on fire with Bonita Applebum and nothing was sounding like that at the time.
It’s a tough battle in his position and I appreciate all of his efforts. Spiritual battle will last for everyone til death so yeah man it’s tough i see what he’s trying to do and I know he’s talented to invite people to Christ the way he does
Then again, “throwing booty” trying to find more positive songs that are less idk low level is a defeat coming. End of the day that’s all lust of the eyes and yeah people gonna use their sin for the right vibe. They’re going back to juvenile
if you want to know what happens when a genre stops being fun, look at rock.
What happened to rock music
@@Louisdc it has not been cool or mainstream in a long time
@@groalerablethat's not the reason. Rock stopped being about anything meaningful, which is exactly what's happening to rap now.
And rap was way more "fun" in the early 90's than it is now.
@@Shockzer67 rock from the 50s-80s had song after song about relationships, partying, sex etc, basic human shit. Since the 90s is when more and more has been depressed shit.
True Indeed
“ Back that ass up”ain’t a HIP HOP MILESTONE it’s just a ratchet catchy song. Gotta move pass low vibrational material.
You can have fun party records that promote neutral or even positive messages
I’m genuinely surprised Kev asked that question
I'm not. This is what they've conditioned people to believe.
Dee-1 been my guy forever 💯
Been shutting my ass up and grinding since back then!! 😅
Evil is crafty and they know how to keep pushing the ratchet music.
Hip Hop is at its best when it has a balance of consciousness and ratchet. If it is too much of one thing that is when rap gets itself in trouble.
Both are making valid points, however the interviewer should remember Hip Hop started in the parties ! So to say it wasn't a party vibe before songs like "back that ass up" is simply forgetting the history and origin
For us to drive cars we had to decimate the horse industry
Black people need to understand to elevate we need to eliminate things by that hold us back
Also the old argument was that that music doesn’t influence us, or it’s not the artist responsibility. The scores have been counted and verified, that music has negatively influenced black men, black women and black families.
I just think there’s a time and place for all types of music. The problem is, while there is plenty of good, inspiring positive music out there, the only stuff getting the most exposure is the ratchet, low vibration music. I can listen to a lot of stuff as long as it’s good and I’m in the correct mood and environment for it.
"Come on man." 😄❣️
I think it's a lot of dope underground artists that don't have that machine behind them to balance all this garbage being promoted like bac in the day when we had the Lord's of the new school brand Nubians arrested developments nappy roots the alcholiks ras kass monie loves the bahamadia the big mikes etc
There's definitely a lot more variety out there right now a lot of people don't know about. It's kind of sad, so many alternative/independent/underground acts and not just from the states. Hip hop and R&B's vibe from here has flowered ALL OVER THE PLANET. A lot of dope UK R&B today with a lot of influence from the neo soul era. Almost countless dope rappers from right here stateside. Up until a couple years back during COVID, I didn't even realize how much modern dope blues, folk, jazz artists are out there. LA has a crazy jazz movement going on right now the mainstream takes almost zero interest in and the big artists themselves know about it. Some of those folks work on Kendrick's albums all the time.
@@dawb86 I'm speaking on one genre in this country & kendric is not the blue print lol I mean people like sa- roc or Krit or rapsody Larry June Vince Staples ab-soul le$ snow da product etc these are all dope hip artist who really don't get the push like they should
Powerful conversation

@@trenttotten7202yes it is. The problem is that with the vastness of the internet, how she is being pushed and rachet music being on the top training women to act that way is INSANE
@CorporationSKY you must seriously not think highly of women if you think that certain types of music can "train" them. Keep in mind that nowhere does it say that it's a prerequisite that the adults that make these songs have to make them with kids in mind.

It's not the artist. it's the consumers. There are more ratchets out there than we can count. And a lot of ppl are pleasers. They want to please their friends taste in music by pushing the same over repetitive bops. Some people generally do not like new experiences. They can't even phatom listening to a different genre other than hip-hop. Everybody dresses, speaks, interacts with each other as if they're twins, just mimicking each others bad habits. Ppl won't even give other cellphone companies a chance. They all buy iphones under the pretenses of "the message bubble color is different," like what, how about buying things you actually need and not what somebody else pressure into getting for yourself. You know what's good for you. Listen to the music you like, buy the phone you like. Be your own person. The different genres of music will find their respective crowd. And so all those businesses.
Yes, you can. You could dance to anything you yes you can. You could dance to anything white man
“GIRL YOU LOOK GOOD WON’T YOU BACK THAT QUEEN UP…”🤔 NAHHH
The host is not a Black person that is impacted by what the current hip hop promotes. These days, most people can’t imagine a black person that doesn’t fit the ratchet stereotype. And think about who’s being murdered while killers are under the spell of the negative vibrations in popular rap.
There should be every version of creative expression. Completely boundless. There’s room for everything. The darkest, shallowest, brightest and deepest. It takes all kinds. The only valid argument for limitations would be if art physically hurts others or forces others to do things they don’t want to. I’m not aware of any art that does either of those things. Exploitation and horror movies are also very valid art that have inspired millions. Judging forms of art, the people who make them and like them this heavily (calling people dummies) is actually pretty ignorant. How bout you get some brain and see your therapist. Who wants him to get the bag and not rap about building wealth? Sounds like a boogeyman he created. All things in moderation, including moderation.

His mannerisms really remind me of James Baldwin, the “mhm mhm” while listening to Kev speak was characteristic of Baldwin during interviews and debates
5:29 I agree with that
See this is the reason why people don’t wanna change their thoughts about today’s current music is because the host is perpetuating the thought that positive uplifting music cannot be mainstream. I’ve seen DJ Vlad do this for so many years for some reason you have people outside our culture influencing us on the type of music that we should be accepting.
I can tell what type of person you are by the type of music you listen to on the regular. People vibe with frequencies and often listen to music that reflects their reality or current emotional state
Dee-1 is a real one
The fact that the host is saying you need a song to “throw ass too” is the problem. Late 90’ to early 00’ there were songs that we all danced to and had a blast. When you wanted to get close to your lady and grind that’s when you played the slow jams. Sorry if my words are showing my age but it’s the truth. People were throwing ass to all kinds of non-ratchet songs in the 70's and 80's and even early 90s. You can easily make non-ratchet music for people to shake they "groove thing". That's said, I'm more about balance than completely erasing certain kinds of music.
