What I think he really means there is he never stuck with a certain thing long enough to be at the status of Miles Davis with the trumpet, or Herbie Hancock with the keys. I don't think he would deny he's a great rapper, but at this point he's definitely outside of the realm of rap even being considered in the same circle of musicality as some of the jazz and rock greats on their instruments, it's an entirely different thing. Everyone who can talk grows up speaking, and can learn to put rhythm and cadence and inflection on their voice, but 90% of people who can talk can't play an instrument with their breath like trumpet or sax or clarinet.
@@antondoty5552 yeah, but learning and being decent at an instrument isnt hard, it just takes time. Its just viewed as "above" rap because most people dont do it, even though they 100% can. Andre3000s songwriting is what puts him above other rappers, yes he has incredible technical skill but miles davis isnt known for just playing notes in a rhythm hes known for what he did in jazz, both andre 3000 and miles davis are equally great artists.
Jun Di Totally, but he’s not talking about being decent. He’s talking about being great. And while you’re right about various instruments being easy to pick up by anyone, and bad players with shitty songs are definitely cringeworthy it absolutely takes more time, practice and dedication to become an incredible instrumentalist vs an incredible rapper/songwriter. Not discounting those who practice their rapping and songwriting at the same level of technical ability as a world renown violinist or trumpeter, but most rappers don’t have that level of commitment which dilutes the pool a little bit.
The fact that André 3000 has social anxiety and feels more comfortable alone is making me want to cry, I really have never thought that the people I listen to would be going through the same type of mental issues that I do. It just makes me want to listen to his music more.
It's prob because he saw how Kanye lost fans when he switched up his style to braggadocio although he gained new ones but the kind of ppl that liked 50 Cent try-hard ish.
That's what I'm saying. I think he'd be suprised how much support and love he has. He already earned that shit. You can't please everyone. The ones that are gonna talk shit were never cool to begin with lol
I think it's more so he wouldn't enjoy it. He believes he's not the same, which he isn't but his rust is others artist best project so he just needs to do it

He was behind me in line. I walked out to my scooter to look for change and I hear “I got you” I turned around and he handed me two dollars. I said “I only need one it’s ok” and as I was giving him back one dollar I noticed who it was and I said “are you Andre Benjamin?” He said “yes sir I am” I was like “O MY GOD!” He gave me a big hug and I said “can I take picture with you?” He said “yes”. I told him, “thank you for what you do for music” at the time he was filming the Jimi Hendrix movie and I asked him about that and he said, “I can’t really tell you about that” but he wanted to tell me I could see it In his eyes. Then he noticed more people walking up and he got nervous and said “alright love you” and he gave me another hug and he got in his SUV and took off. It was amazing!!! No lie this is a real story thanks for letting me share it :-)
I saw 3 stacks while walking down the street in LA. He was on the phone so I didn't approach him, but when I looked towards him, he looked at me and gave me this nod like.. Yeahh bruhh its me. He was wearing some overalls.
He's one of the coolest celebs. I ran into him at whole foods in Atlanta and he was really nice. Apparently, he's known for just talking to people at the store.

The fact 3stacks and slim talk frequently I would love them to do a track if it cannot be an album. Imagine feat from Royce and big boi. 😍🎵🎶
How is Rick Rubin, a record producer, doing a better job at interviewing a celebrity(one of my top 3 rappers) than most trained media professionals? He asks the right questions, doesn't interrupt unless he has something of value to add to the conversation. Kudos to both these legends for giving us this masterpiece! Edit:i know its a little vain, but thank u all for the likes!
"trained".. thats the problem. These are two HUMANS who are passionate and actually give a fuck about each other... Rick isn't asking questions for clicks and drama. Theyre genuinely having a conversation
I’ve listened to this podcast episode probably 5-7 times since it dropped. It gives me peace in a way. The best part is they are both very successful, but their tones, voices and stories tell they are just two guys making their way through life just like us.
Probably because, at least from his experience, it's oftentimes unfair, negative judgement. I should know, because I've been there for a good minute. His spiritual vibe is most likely on a FAR different plateau than most of us, thus the spiritual sensitivity is also on a FAR higher scale. If nothing else, he's probably searching for those who see his soul & spirit 1st, THEN his songs...
"Never been great at anything!" Andre. From one of the greatest lyricist of my lifetime. God bless you bro. I appreciate you as andre and being a real person and your music because you can hear the care in your lyrics. Thank you
I know, that statement flawed me too, I think I exclaimed out loud ( to myself) , if he’s never been great then I’m not sure anyone has ever been great at anything in the whole of human history.
That is actually true, I wonder if he would consider it. He could even do it from home. I'm feeling his whole feelings! I pray that if he wants to start making music again, he gets the support he needs to fulfil that.
This is more of a therapy session. It's crazy because knowing his anxiety issues you can really see Rick trying to offer help and offering earnest creative advice.
One thing I’m definitely grateful for is Andre got his flowers while he was still here. He has been recognized as a top tier lyricist by many ppl in and out of the industry.
did you even listen to the podcast? half the time he’s talking about how much he misses being unsuccessful and having zero notoriety. do you think he cares about being regarded as one of the greatest rappers if he doesn’t even listen to rap?
I hated goin to the laundromat with a passion was very happy to get a washer dryer. This guy was willing to give up everything to feel normal when millions of normal people would give everything to have his life. What I learned today is find a way to be happy right where you’re at because somebody somewhere wishes they had what you have.
There's truth to what he says, but being on the side of having it all and turning away is one thing. To be that great at a craft and never follow it through to fruition for a second I'd wager brings more self-questioning and internal trouble

The rap game is still trying to catch up to Andre 3000, and he's been MIA for years. I never had a chance to see Outkast in concert, which is a tragedy, but I still got my original Outkast CD. I lived in the best era of hip hop.
They came to a club near me when I was still in high school near a college I ended up attending after. They hadn't long released ATliens and it was an amazing show and I was close to the stage. I just got lucky they never carded. I was 16 or 17 I think. I was late getting to the same club for Homecoming one year and Goodie Mob performed, so I missed that, which sucked.
@@tmibeard I saw Kast in Statesboro. Also saw YoungBloodZ and Jim Crow later. Other than Kast, they were the most fun I've had. Some fool tried to either grab Sean Paul's chain or something while he crowd surfed. Guy was next to me and I will never forget when he got back to the stage he pointed the guy out and the goons swept in and handled him.
Andre made some of the boldest moves in his world as an artist. OutKast broke the mold and was universally epic and influential to my childhood discovering music. Hard to top something as big as that, but it sucks to hear pain in such a brilliant mind.
"Imagine it's a scene in a movie, instead of sinking in...rather say that you can't wait to see what happens next like watching a movie" - rick That's one of the best things anyone's told me about anxiety and obstacles. I heard it in this podcast a couple days ago and it has helped me so much when I'm trying to calm myself down.
I also like to think, when something happen to just let it go and think of it like man imagine in a few years imma laught this of so much, sometimes in the heat of the moment things sucks but with a step back you can grow from that moment and be a better person, things happen for a reason it's these moments that defines life... yeah fucking love andre ! 😅

I'm going through a rabbit hole this week of André3000 after the new album release! Jesus I'm in love with this guy! haha So sincere and open. As an only child, I can relate a lot to his words. He's an Artist from head to toe.
When he said “Ive never been great at anything” I had to take a seat. I’ve gone through some rough year of depression and now that I’m starting to feel better - I can’t help all the shame at the “wasted time.” I constantly feel not great at anything because I just feel so behind - and I felt that way before the depression got bad. To hear 3k say he feels that way too is just - I want to give him a hug. I get it. I was listening to a podcast that said, “it’s important to live life by design rather than emotion. Basically, sticking to a routine is what allows us to be the healthiest version of ourselves (especially when you're fighting these demons ex. OCD for me). I’ve had to overhaul how I approach taking care of my brain (exercise, journaling, studying etc) by practising mediocre consistency. Now I try to put in consistent 50-60% effort into my journaling habit - to make sure I do it I began recording it and posting it on YT. Because historically I have a habit of going too hard, not being able to sustain the Herculean effort, giving up and hating myself. So now I’m trying to give a small, consistent mediocre effort everyday. And its crazy how it adds up.

Andre 3000 verse on elevators is one of the greatest verses I have ever heard. I love nas and big pun ...but the way he put that verse together is ridiculous. Salute sir.
All of the verses mentioned are straight Fuego. His 2nd verse on Aquemini is probably my personal favorite, but is it the hardest? "A Life In The Day Of Andre Benjamin" may get the nod because there's no hook, he just goes and goes and goes. But the end of "Elevators" is indeed very special... "True, I've got more fans than the average man, but not enough loot to last me To the end of the week, I live by the beat, like you live check-to-check If you don't move your feet then I don't eat, so we like neck-to-neck Yes, we done come a long way like them slim-ass cigarettes From Virginia, this ain't gon' stop, so we just gon' continue" A3K: Book One, Chapter Six, Verse Four
I miss Andre's music more than anything I have ever lost in this life. I really hope he returns to hip hop in any shape or form. Freddie Gibbs is my favorite current rapper but Andre is definitely my all time favorite. I grew up and became a man to his lyrics. I miss him so very much.
Ac Benny Freddie is an assasin on the beats bro,it’s so sad that we don’t get to see anything from the legend Andre in yearss though, guess we’ll have to wait for the next Frank Ocean record and hope for a feature 😔
fr him saying he wasn't sure if ppl would like his new direction he was going in, then drops those two mothers day songs which are incredible, they get great reception and then he dips lmao. Honestly want more solo stuff from him whatever it is
I miss all of them, really. Outkast. Goodie MOB. Young Bloods. Nappy Roots I always liked SOUTHERN RAP way more than "East" and "West". Others were baning Tupac and Biggie in my college years, but I was banking SOUTHERN Rap. Probably because it was more "real" and about "life" and "conscious." I guess fans of Reggae understand that.
Andre 3000 describes what think of as "The Plight of the Lyrical Artist". Rappers like him fall into 2 categories. On one hand, the desire to meet their own standard becomes a hindrance to creativity. That's how u get 1 album every 8 years. On the other hand, u get artists like Eminem or Lupe, who start to sacrifice songcraft for lyrical showmanship. Both scenarios represent either an inability or a creative block, whatever the cause is.
I agree. But the Eminem and Lupe example is that they are still putting out music and experimenting. Nothing stays the same forever, artists can't reclaim their youthful energy when they come onto the scene and no musician consistently smashes it out the park, but occasionally you get home runs, singles on albums that remind you why this artist is special. Rappers have peaks and declines, it's natural and not unlike a sports athlete, but I'm happy for little gems every now and then. If your art can make people happy which is what I think André's can, then he can make a positive difference to the world and people's lives.
Damn I wasn’t expecting him to be so down on himself. He’s such a cool guy. I hope he finds internal peace. I relate to a lot of what he’s talking about.
I wasnt feeling them that first album...BUT the next 3! man I'm one of there biggest fans I love them both big boi & 3 stacks.... but since they are on hiatus my new number one Duo is LITTLE BROTHER!

I love how Rick is making Andre realize his potential. You can tell he’s judging his own lane... let it go Dre, bring it back! Would love to see his new music from a new perspective.
I think he knows his potential, he just feels stuck or overwhelmed by the ppl who will tear down or judge anything he puts out. And like he said he’s lacking confidence right now. I would love new music from Andre but I want him to do what he wants to do. If his heart isn’t in it and he just wants to go to the park and play the bass clarinet, then I think that’s great. I think when ppl say “let it go, and bring back your music” it’s just adding to the feeling of being stuck or being overwhelmed.
Andre's 3000 was unknown to me until I watched ' Idlewild' This young man is truly so before his musical talent The music 🎶 dancing and movement in that movie was incredible ! Having crippling anxiety and depression, I feel for Andre'. I can hear the anxiety in his voice. I really feel for him. I'm sending good vibes for him.
I don't think it's fame.. It's a personality thing. It's noticeable more with famous people. For example, I am glad we wear masks because I feel normal now I don't get noticed. I get frustrated when going in public places because I don't wish people can notice me.
Also, I remember years ago, I use to work at this supermarket and Andre 3000 and his son, Seven would come in to shop. One time he was in self check out and his card wouldn’t swipe, so he came to me to help him. He gave me his card to swipe at my cashier station. It was a Black card. It was the first time I ever held a black card in my hands in my life. The card was hard and didn’t bend. Once I swiped his card and got him checked out. He thanked me and left the store. He’s so polite, patient, and nice.

You can tell that Andre has a really hard time accepting Rubin's subtle nudges to create again and actively thaw out of his frozen state. At 40:00 ish he gets quiescent and shruggish while Rubin tells him that he can be the person creating the new thing. Rubin is a man who has struggled with many of the same things and met many people calibrated the same way. He keeps showing Andre open doors, or at least pathways to begin on -returning to his social roots, music for self-enjoyment, meditation, stepping into another person's shoes, and so on- but Rubin can't step through the door for Andre. I know what it feels like, but you've got to have courage to actually live.

Gambino is into a lot of different things, and he doesn't do as much work (in comparison) as Outkast did I never said BETTER, I said "next". I focused on a handful of things that they are SIMILAR in. -both intelligent, thoughtful men … not dumb thugs with a microphone -both are AT-aliens -both really don't care about peoples opinions -both have their own funky way of dressing - their OWN minds -both avoid the lime light of celebrity life -both aren't out there chasing after hoes and loose women (like so many dumb rappers do) -as 'wierd' as both of them are, other rappers dont mess with them cause they know if they do, these brothers are way too smart to get cracked on without embarrassing their opponent.

Steven McCormick I was in Atlanta near Moreland Ave. and I was driving my scooter and I needed 50 cents for a blunt because the gas station wanted a 5$ minimum to use my card.

I get it.

My favorite line
"I would wear headphones all the time. I used to think I loved music, turns out I just hate my brain" - Mark Normand
Khalil Abdul-Waheed You worded it perfectly!!!
@James R aquemini is one of my favorite CDs of all time. They don't makeum like that anymore.
I really like your comment but if you think Lu has sacrificed songcraft, you really need to peep Drogas Wave
Eminem’s last few albums are complex lyrically, but fundamentally horrible sonically

He’s so polite, patient, and nice.
I thought they did a second interview was so excited.
same :((
You know we waiting for it

Listened to it again lol
Me too..still listened!
Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik
First CD I ever bought, got it from best buy across from Southlake Mall. Over a quarter-century ago, man life goes by quick.
Shout out to the GOAT rap group, end of discussion.
As a youngster growing up in London, i remember when Outcast first came to the scene in the States, it was unlike anything I have heard before so I went to HMV and Virgin records to buy southernplayalisticcadillacmusik album on LP but I was told no chance of getting it here mate. I applied for a passport, saved up money and travelled to the States to connect with the culture, certainly I bought the album and returned back to London. Outcast 3K and Big boi were epic rappers and to hear that Andre suffers from social anxiety is shocking as his bars were on a deferent level.
Wishing Andre all the best from London and thanks Outcast for putting the South on the map!
Andre 3000 is a once in a lifetime. Its a big statement but in terms of innovation and creativity etc hes up there with michael jackson and prince. Like rubin said nobody like him has made music like his since
Suffering through social anxiety for 15 years now, depression, and hypersensitivity while being an artist; this was so refreshing to hear. Because for years I've been over analyzing, and Ricks advice was perfect.
Two legends chopping it up, I love it. This is an interview people will be watching in 100yrs, easily. Be grateful you were here to experience these two as they were here. Peace and love to all! 💖🙏🏻
I know what it feels like, but you've got to have courage to actually live.
you are right, sounds like mentorship here :)
My God!!!! "....you've got to have courage to actually live'. I'm sorry @ me_irl you hit THE nail on THE head!!!!! That hit me at my core.
@me_irl Are you a Therapists? Offer analysis on podcast Cover Photo? Could be my 🧠 overthinking this but why am I getting #Movie #getOUT #Handler #Pizza #BB #MK ...looking at it?
@@girl123boy456 nope, Andre isn't being handled or Get Out controlled. He's just creatively frustrated as a man whose social and economic context has changed drastically. Success sends a lot of artists down this path.
I never thought my mentor could have a mentor it’s weird to witness
Andre 3000 is my favorite artist
There is only ONE OTHER DUDE who could honestly be "the next Andre'" … and that's *CHILDISH GAMBINO.*
both are artists
both have their own funky style
both are deep with their lyrics
neither were about 'commercialization'
both are actors and producers
both are AT-aliens
both tap into "singing" in rap
I'd love to see them do a collaboration.
Damn this made me feel so bad for 3000. You never know what people are going through. That only child then is serious. Rick Rubin connected with him so rough he better then a therapist
“I’m sad because I’m successful. Nobody wants to hear that s***!” This discussion is too good.
Prototype....will Always be My Jam! Love~Peace~
For over 20 years Outkast and Hieroglyphics have been two of my favorite rap groups and within 30sec of listening to the podcast I NOW know why. If y’all ain’t never heard 3rd Eye Vision by Hiero, go bless yourself ASAP! ✌🏾
Hiero aight. Not anywhere near Outkast or 3K
Great to see some love for Hiero
Andre's verses on Frank Ocean's BLONDE album are amazing! Absolutely brilliant moment on that record.
He destroys everyone on Frank's album. It's amazing.
“ one for the money , yes sir, two for show “ Outkast = goat status ✌🏽
My fourth listen. There's something that's so comforting in this conversation.
P.S. The People that Grew Up listening to OutKast are STILL Alive!!!! There is a Audience for Ur New Normal Stacks!
Hell we dying to hear it, esp in a world of 100 sound-alikes. He was a new normal on every album, & it never took us long to realize how good it was.
Yes we are still here!!! I’m here for a 3000 Instrumental album (although he is my favorite emcee)... I even bought the Class of 3000 soundtrack, slept on
Class of 3000 was a great show. I wish it was on when I was a kid. Still great as an adult though.
Always!!!!
I’m 21 years old. I REALLY wanna hear a solo 3k record. Like really idgaf that he’s older, I wanna hear André. One of the greatest lyricists ever.
The actual GOAT for hip hop and beyond.

@@DonCornelius366 idk man childish gambino isn't half the writer andre is
@@anjeniuous
I honestly don't care.
Dre' is pretty much over rap.
Gambino is into a lot of different things, and he doesn't do as much work (in comparison) as Outkast did
I never said BETTER, I said "next".
I focused on a handful of things that they are SIMILAR in.
-both intelligent, thoughtful men … not dumb thugs with a microphone
-both are AT-aliens
-both really don't care about peoples opinions
-both have their own funky way of dressing - their OWN minds
-both avoid the lime light of celebrity life
-both aren't out there chasing after hoes and loose women (like so many dumb rappers do)
-as 'wierd' as both of them are, other rappers dont mess with them cause they know if they do, these brothers are way too smart to get cracked on without embarrassing their opponent.
I said NOTHING about his "writing skills" … and in the world of rap, Gambino is the only one who SHARES common characteritics (as a person AND a rapper) as Dre.
I'm not some young scrubs giving my opinion. I used to bang Outkast, Goodie Mob, Nappy Roots, Young Bloods … (SOUTHERN RAP) all through my college and grad school years when most other people were banging Tupac and Biggie. I LIVED through that era. I see a lot of Dre IN Gambino.
Ya'll young folk probably don't get it cause all you know is the old songs - the rapper. But WE knew the MAN as well as the rapper. Gambino is a lot like Dre … as a PERSON and as a RAPPER.
*And let's be real. Gambino is his own man. But there is NO "Pimp" without the "Poet," and no "Poet" without the "Pimp" … and probably no Outkast without the Dungeon Family. But Gambino flies solo.*
Andre if you ever come to this comment section know you are extremely loved regardless if you put music out or not!! This one of those interviews I come back to often, & it makes me appreciate him more every trip as an artist & human🤍
dawg, i got so much in common with this dude. literally from our need to be isolated and how we react, how we think. both being only children. i'm listening to this feeling like my mind is being mirrored to me.. like our lives are parallel. him being in the later stages of his career and me at the starting line. fuck if 3k could be my mentor im set artistically and mentally.
like that shit about praying to be normal, this "gift" that's both a blessing and a curse. man
@@seven9799 In a way that's like you got your own 3 stacks in your head, already doing it. Be your own mentor and engage that inner self, I would listen to what you wrote.
@@jeremygemus1945 fuck that's deep, awe thats wild to think about. the formula is already there i just need to stir the pot.

Whatcha waiting for?
@@olos6149 shit i've been active, i'm currently working towards releasing my first mixtape by the end of may. it's probably going to to be shit, but it'll be one of those shits i'll be proud of you know.
02:05 this is why I call OutKast the greatest...they completely bent the genre of hip hop, they broke it and put it back together and no one has ever did this before or after.
Well said.
Rick Rubin subtly trying to help Andre throughout the interview while respecting his journey enough not to presume he has the answers is really wholesome actually.
Hes the guy labels send bands to to finish an album. Hes not just a producer, he's a therapist and a master in conflict resolution.
@@mikexxxmilly Facts! Look at the Beastie Boys. Party boys to Buddhist. That inner peace is priceless.
He is what the game is missing. We need him the most right now. We are living in some strange times. And I think his perspective would give hope and joy to all.
well said
Agreed.
This Is The Type Of Content I’ve Been Searching For.
Same bro
Same
They’re so human it’s beautiful
Seriously....I love these 2 individuals. This was like a therapy session for 3K with Dr Rubin. I sense at times Rick was trying to give confidence back and get André to make more music. Great interview ad beautiful conversations.
Damn! I saw the thumbnail and hoped this was a video of the interview.
I swear I felt that too lol
I was so excited to see him. It’s been years
I feel you on every level.
Same.
Definitely click baitish but I guess this will do. I definitely feel you on that. That’s the reason they used that pic of him and Rubin for their thumbnail.🤦🏾♂️
I love Andre 3000. Hearing him speak of his confidence and worrying about what others think about say about his music makes me feel less alone and less foolish about feeling the same way. I needed to hear this right now.
Andre is the GOAT. And I love that Rubin mentions Paul Simon, another true great. 10/10
