  • Dolly tells the story behind "Down From Dover" before performing the song.
Found this in storage after 30 years. October 6, 1979, the same day she attended the dedication of the Dolly Parton Parkway.
Her family was there, including her daddy and grandpa. Her daddy was working the t-shirt stand for something to do, but said "hush" to us when we spoke to him--he didn't want anyone to know who he was so he wouldn't get mobbed by people.
If there's any interest, I'll upload the rest of the concert.
Recorded on a Panasonic industrial VHS camera and recorder.

Dolly wrote this this song at 18 years old. Dolly was meant to write songs that touched the hearts of so many. Miss Dolly is beyond talented.

This has got to be one of the saddest songs ever written. Hauntingly beautiful.

It is really astonishing when one considers that Dolly wrote this song during the late '60s and first recorded it in 1970. A song of this depth has much more in common with the beautiful ancient folk ballads (that always ended in tragedy) that Joan Baez and Judy Collins began their careers with than anything relating to commercial country music at the turn of the '70s.

This is my favorite Dolly song. She's so stunningly good. The writing alone is amazing. But then she has the voice and the acting ability. Five stars.

She is a true angel of God's, so natural, beautiful, creative, mature, loving, caring, gentle. I saw her in concert near Toronto, Canada in the 1990's.

I still remember the first time she was on the Porter Wagoner show and we all didn't want to like her because she replaced...now I can't remember the name!Dolly is the real deal.

Teresa Brown Wells “what’s her name”, lol. I’d say it‘s a pretty successful replacement when folks forget who was replaced.

DOLLY! Been a massive fan since the Porter Wagoner days, and 'Down from Dover' can still elicit a tear from these old eyes. Part of what makes this tune so touching is that I believe it is a true story from her past...just guessing.

I agree. She has often stated that her songs are a byproduct of something she has lived or seen others go through. Her writing is a form of therapy not only for her, but for others too !!!!! Life is a constant unending point of Good Times and Bad ( generally referred to as highs and lows ). Her songs show us ( and her ) how to channel the strength and love that's within you. I don't think she realizes how much she has done for others even before she became the Mega Star Of Today !!!!!! I have said it before and will again, She Is One Of The Reasons I Believe In God !!!!!!!!!

Nope. Dolly was a young girl from the hill billy mountains. She had lived at home until she was old enough to move to Nashville on the bus. She immediately met Carl Dean in 1964 at 18, he was 21. She has been with him every since. Dolly was never pregnant for a soilder that was stationed at the Dover base. No one ever left dolly pregnant to have a miss carriage. This is a story she created in her mind and put to music. A true writer and story teller. This heart wrench story is what Dolly did back then. No one was singing about premarital sex and still born children back then. And they still aren't.

@marcosvalenca "Me and little Andy" was my favorite song when I was a child. I always visualized Raggedy Ann and Andy then when I was old enough to understand the words to this song it surpassed my love for "Me and little Andy". I wish this song had a karaoke version to it.

Well hello Dolly, I have been following you for a long time, back in the 60't, your song, Just because I'm blonde, is a lot more about women than men think blonds are stupid should be number 3 on your list Dolly, this song is more than 1 person, I am sorry about the woman who is pregnant by some magpie from Dover and she will wait for him, please this happens all the time Jolene. So just because I'm blond don't think I'm dumb, cause this dumb blond aunt no body's fool. Should be #3
