This heartbreaking song along with Emmylou's "Red Dirt Girl" reminds me to pray for all those young people struggling to cope with life's hardships and broken promises often times without the support of those that are supposed to love them the most.
Beautiful performance from the one and only Dolly Parton.
FInally! This is my favorite version of this song aside from her live performances. Little Sparrow is an amazing album. Her work with Sugar Hill is bluegrass history.

How can dolly’s storytelling and songwriting still surprise me its just so damn good! This song is like reading a story and living it through the young girl’s eyes.. so sad.. ‘.. so dying was ..’.😩 right at the end .
Most underrated song
Down from Dover is a masterpiece written by Dolly when she was a teenage singer-songwriter. It might be the greatest song she ever wrote. At least I can say it is the equal of all her songs, including Jolene, I Will Always Love You and the rest.
How heartbreaking! You’ve got to love a woman for being so brave to create a song like this in a time, a place, a genre of music that was not ready for this type of song… But needed it.

Coat of Many Colors and I Will Always Love You and Jolene get all the publicity but for my money Down from Dover and Little Sparrow are without a doubt the most magnificent songs Dolly has ever written and/or sang. Down from Dover breaks my heart every time I hear it. I can imagine the young girl who idealistically but foolishly believes the lies she is told by a man who was merely using her. I can also imagine her pain when her folks "sent her from the homeplace" when they learned she was expecting a baby. In my opinion this is one of Dolly's very best songs.
