- Lots of work here at our "new' off grid cabin- including getting those trees off the roof and more cleanup- doesn't seem to end! I decide the only way to get all the debris off the roof is to get up there. Let's see how that goes...

Do not be in a hurry to burn all the wood. You are blessed with dry wood. Make neat piles so that you have warmth in the Spring and Fall. Put lattice around the bottom after the boards around the perimeter are gone. So much to do, but take your time.

I have gotten SO much great information from you and Dave which has eased some of my worries. I am a little scared but it’s my dream and I am sure I can do it. Brooke, you scared me to death on that metal roof!!! Never, never!!! get on a roof without nonslip soles!!! Also scared me when you had your ladder turned sideways toward the house...that can make it prone to tipping when you climb on and off, but you turned it around later...yay! I'm also glad you were sitting while you were doing alot of the pushing the debris off. You were being careful, and did an amazing job!!! Now, go order yourself some nonslips, girl!!! 😘

I love the the property that surrounds this house. It looks so peaceful and relaxing. Brooke I am jealous of your blueberry, cherry and hazelnut plantings. I have been wanting to plant blueberries, but we have a black bear that likes to hang out behind our house. I definitely don't want him to think we are a free food source. Can't wait to see the progress and transformation of this house.

Very wise decision on the testing. Just because it's a cabin doesn't mean it can't have materials contaminated with asbestos or lead.

Ya know, I had a thought. I've been watching ALOT of yours and Daves videos the past few days and I remember one you did where you mentioned people were complaining about you cutting down trees. I also just a bit ago finished your video on the storm damage to your house and community about 4yrs. or so ago. Then I just finished this one, and the one Dave did on his and Ryans cleanup. The next time someone complains about you cutting down trees, refer them to these videos and show them that Mother Nature does far more damage than you could possibly ever do. Love the videos Brooke!!
I love how capable you are. Reminds me of myself 20 years ago. My husband and I reroofed our former house by ourselves. We worked every weekend and every day after work, til dark. It took us a month! But we got it done and it only cost us $800. At 65, I don't see myself on another roof unless its a flood. Y'all are amazing and I love how you can take something so run down and through your efforts, create real value. Looking forward to seeing this cabin as it progresses.

Don't know the cost involved, but I am thinking a portable sawmill would be a great thing to have up there. Might recoup the coast. Rough-cut 2x4 is getting popular. You two are some of my heroes! Keep doing what you're doing. Thank You!

I am also amazed that the roof suffered very little damage. Also amazed it didn't rust out due to being constantly exposed to soggy tree debris.

Brooke, you totally freaked me out standing on the top of that ladder and climbing onto that roof. Of course a lot of that stems from me coming off a ladder and going down 10 -12 feet a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, I know, there was a little padding on the ground but still. Gravity is more than a rumor.

Oh, I meant to add that you need to add your names, kids and woofers names and year to that chimney. Will be really cool for the next generations to find one day. I often put a shiny penny with that year's date into the concrete/ cement work, especially if i pour a hearth inside. I have stuck cool little trinkets like painted wooden fish and goofy, quirky, arty fun stuff and unique tiles and metal, glass to make it a work of art. Mosaic- like when I can. I know you'll make your unique mark on this project! Fun to find old trinkets at thrift stores. Broken pieces of cool dishes and stuff that is someone's junk is my treasure!

I found your channel a while back and then watched an episode with my 4 year old daughter. She now prefers to watch your videos instead of cartoons. She chants “girl in the woods! Huge job clearing that roof off. I'm amazed that it is relatively (if not completely) undamaged! I would have thought it would be all eaten away. Asbestos is horrible. I have pertioneal mesothelioma, all because of asbestos. Most folks live a year after being diagnosed, I am going on 11 years. God has blessed me for sure.

Watching you on that roof sweeping the pine needles off, I thought, I bet when you were starving in Mongolia you never pictured yourself sweeping off a tin roof. I love watching you work. I can't wait to see what you accomplish.
You are bad to the bone tackling that roof clean up! I am figuring you said you were about 52 years old, I’m 62. I used to work hard like you but developed fibromyalgia and nerve damage from having had Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever as a teenager, then the nerve damage set in as I began to age. That pain put a stop to all my fun projects and watching you get at it really makes me happy!

As nervous as I was seeing you working up on that steel roof, it's hard even for me to believe that I once flew an Ultralight airplane "solo" and loved every minute of it. Putting my cabin's steel roof on was one of my least favorite things about the build (made me think of being on an elevated "Slip-n-Slide"). Now that the weather here in Michigan is improving (ha-ha!) I'll be putting some "finishing touches" to it. So glad you all have stayed safe during tree and debris removal, Brooke! I am so shocked with the little amount done by that fallen tree on the roof line. Just goes to show can’t judge a book by the cover.
****. PSA…..as a former FF I wanted to take a moment to educate viewers on ladder safety. More so on one aspect in particular. The safe & correct way to use a ladder to gain access onto a roof is having said ladder extend past the roof line by 3-5 rungs (steps). This ensures you have clearance to step safely off the side of the ladder while still holding onto the sides of the ladder for balance & support. Any time you are working on a roof there should be someone to spot you on the ladder & also be there in the event you accidentally fall. Looking good Brooke & Dave!!!
