we have here an incredible new car - The brand has been completely revamped, not a single part of this car can be related to any other Alfa Romeos on the road. This is a true masterpiece - and still 1) we are skeptical about the quality of the car 2) we still have doubts about resale value 3) still have hard time giving it an honest review the amount of R&D and cash spent on this car and its brand new "giorgio" platform is much greater than anything ever done by Alfa Romeo. Forget all you know about Alfa Romeo from 1988 on - that was Fiat - this car is the reincarnation of the original brand identity that dates back a century. Keep your minds open for once, its easy to stereotype, its easy to say what you people want to hear just to get a few likes. You have been crying about a proper rwd manual car. This is it. Drive it, buy it and live it. Then just then bash it - if needed - I highly doubt it - this car is a master piece a showcase of pure driving joy.
Having driven 1200km across the Alps in a 4C, i can understand what he says. The 4C has te potential to do very good : lightweight, carbon chassis, dualclutch, absolutely gorgeous look ... But it lacks that bit of mechanical excitement. And the front axle isn"t clearly build for bumpy roads. So yes, the expectations were high with the 4C, and we were all a bit disapointed when we drove it.
+David Mieles For all its good looks and technology, the resounding conclusion is that it just not 'sweet' enough to be a good sports ca. It has the paper stats, but they're obviously not translating into touch and feel (which is EVERYTHING in a sports car). To me, this means its just a case of re-balancing the suspension, sorting out steering geometry and sorting out tyre pressures! It has a good engine and a carbon chassis... there is literally no excuse why its not a 10/10ths car.
+Keegan The 4c is a pos... no power steering is not acceptable in car built past like 1995... let alone 2014. It's weak, somewhat slow, doesn't sound good, isn't usable daily but it is priced right and look good. Overall not a great car.
+Keegan Look up "evo Car of the Year 2013". They explain it there. Several other magazines/video channels/etc. say similar things, so evo is definitely not alone in saying it is a disappointment.
+kaio37k I like no power steering - what's the issue when the front end is lightly loaded? I don't need a car to have light steering when parking so ditching complexity/weight and adding fine detail sounds good to me.
+Lorenzo Hill which jaguar xe rs it doesnt exist a rs version and it isnt confirmed yet only the xe s exist and why would they call it rs althought audi is using this designation ?
Ford also uses RS for the top version of the Focus, so I guess it is just a common thing. And Jaguar has also sort of used it for the XKR-S... I don't think Audi has the exclusivity on the RS letters...
Beautiful car. Can't wait for a few years to pass so I can maybe get a used one :p I've been worrying about what car I could upgrade to from an E46 M3, as I'm not a fan of the newer M cars really. Never owned an Alfa, and never wanted to until this was announced, and now all things point to it being absolutely great.
Rogue Qall PWNAGE SrS PlY I would be surprised to see a cheaper V6 anytime soon, but I sure hope so. That weould be great news. Second hand buying is a great idea ;)
X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X Second hand cars is the only way forward! Who the hell wants to deal with depreciation. By the time these cars get on the second hand market, we'll all know if they're worth having or not! Unless of course, you're just stinkingly rich, lol xD
Just got a ‘19 with 3,200 miles on it and most of the factory warranty left. Sparcos, carbon ceramic brakes and exposed carbon roof. Believe the hype. It’s absolutely real.
I'm in love whit this car. Alfa Romeo has nailed it, but whit help from Ferrari and Maserati you just know it is good. Finally a great Alfa Romeo again. Job well done Alfa.
+Fred Schriks Ferrari and Alfa Romeo were always been really tied together. From the born of Scuderia Ferrari (Enzo was working on, at that times, called Reparto Corse Alfa romeo) to the F1 and DTM/GTCC, the cooperation between the 2 brands has always been strongly tied together. There's no Alfa without Ferrari and vice versa.
sh0ckv3l True, but whit this car some extra work has gone in to it. Alfa Romeo's from the last 10 to 15 years were well crap. Since the 8C in my opinion Alfa Romeo is on the way back to be great again.
I have to whiteknight for the little 4C a bit: I have to say, with time, the little Alfa is more and more appealing. With 488 GTB going for turbos+paddles and Porsche switching to that turbo-four-pot (suicidal imho) it really makes 4C seem like a good contender, certainly not outdated. I mean, the one thing everyone "complained" about 4C is that it makes more sense to go for a Cayman. WIth that terrible turbo four that argument is out of the window. 4C rocks. It's not for everyone but it's brilliant*. *What do I know though, I just read magazines and watch videos.
+Leuff the Alfa haters just needed to find something about the 4C to diss. No luggage space? You buy a supercar for luggage space? If you can afford a 4C, you can afford a daily driver/vacation wagon.
+Mike Keller You don't buy a supercar for luggage space - but it's nearly pointless without. I want to have fun AND have somewhere safe to put my stuff so I'm not worried about theft if I fancy stopping for food/a walk round town. And a dirty weekend? My partners tend to get sniffy about having their bags taking up cabin room. If I wanted no luggage space I'd get a motorbike. I don't need golf bags but I do need somewhere for a change of clothes and a toothbrush. Ask your GF ;-)
+pd4165 the 4C is unapologetically terrible as an everyday car; it's the price it had to pay to be such an evocative and visceral experience. It's loud, unrefined, noisy, uncomfortable as hell but those traits are what make it a great sports car. Your adrenaline rushes, pores open up as you bang it, turn and hope it doesn't chuck you into some bushes. You have to be awake as it can snap and bite you. The philosophy is the diametric opposite of, say, an s-class which wraps you up in comfort and tries to minimise the environment's intrusion into your space, that's what makes it a great luxury car but a terrible sports car. What the 4C does is invite as much of the environment into your space as possible. Is it uncomfortable? Yes. Does comfort tend to shortchange truly experiencing a drive? Yes. That's why the 4C is as it is.
The 4C was "the final disappointment"? Uh. It could've been better, sure. Every car could be better. But disappointment? I was never of the impression that Alfa makes bad cars...
***** No, I only know people who own one. But there's plenty of people who like the car and plenty of did not write it off as disappointment. I don't understand the negativity about it.
The 4C is very Italian. It's a terrible car from an objective point of view, but you can't help fall in love with it if you get to experience one. It's an Alfa pur sang, but it's also an embodiment of why the Giulia is Alfa's last hope.
Guys you're the only channel with superb reviews! I'd love to request the reviews of the current hot and premium SUVs of the moment. The Jaguar one, the Maseratti one, etc. By all means, I'm dying to have your insight and expertise. All the other reviews so far have been at best, decent. Cheers!
Alfa are returning to their rightful position in the world of car makers. The Guilia really is a great Alfa and great Alfas are just awesome cars. It's interesting the comments about the 4C and I wonder how history will judge that amazing little car. People often take some time to understand Alfas and if in doubt go and have a drive a 75, or even some later Alfas - these are all charismatic cars with soul that have few competitors and not many of them have 4 doors. Thanks Henry another great review.
I don't understand why more manufacturers aren't making large steering-column mounted paddles (at least as an option for performance models). I'd even be happy to see these instead of tiny button-like 'paddles' on my hot hatch.
+Christian R A classic! Like the GTV... oh wait, like the 164... oh wait, like the 75... oh wait like the Brera... oh wait. The only classic Alfas are cars old enough to have grand children.
There is one thing about the M3 that none of it's rivals has ever beaten: Timelessness. People still run E36 M3s today and find a vast aftermarket parts list for them, you can rebuild them, build them anyway you want. With time they get like legos.
Damn it, i really want this car. After driving Alfa's for 20 years i was not really enthousiatic about their new cars. But this car is something else. A shame that i can not afford it... i will have to wait about 15 years and then buy one.
Hey Henry, great reporting as always and you have captured the essence of what every Alfa should be capable of; will be interesting to see how Quadrifoglio fares on UK roads. Hopefully Alfa will now let the Ferrari engineers loose on the 4C. If ever there was a car that was destined for greatness........!! Onwards and up-wards, first Alfa we might run long-term. Tremendous and long overdue. Clear to see how excited you felt about that prospect as are we and every other mortal with petrol in their veins!
It needed to be said that the manual option, apart from being able to rev match,"senses" if you want to do it yourself by heel and toe,so not do the match for you,and allows you to upshift without needing to lift your foot from the pedal:pretty interesting abilities for driving involment I'd say to be so quickly thrown out the window because of the gear knob shape.Wasn't expecting such details not being mentioned considering EVO's "Thrill of Driving"mantra, let alone being thrown out the window by such consideration.Really...the knob?!
My goodness they got me with this one for sure. As a current owner of a BMW E92 325i coupe and an Alfa 147 i am heavily thinking of this one as a replacement for both. Older Alfas tend to fall apart but they look gorgeous, sound great and generally feel so nice. Recent BMW models just lost the plot. The 3 series has gone the fat route and the smaller models come only with limited options and soon with front wheel drive. This is not what i expect from a BMW and now i have this option :-) BTW i am a hard core nerd for RWD fun. So all the FWD competition is just not visible for me --> boooring.
i remember sitting in the manual one on Vienna car show. It had one of the best seating position of all cars and that huge manual shift ball was my favourite of all times. Clutch was weird tho
+nonickname100 I tried it too in Vienna, but that one had the sport seats option. (which were amazing) This one in the video only has the standard seats.
Actually this engine was proposed for the 488 but was dismissed from Ferrari due to known timing problems V6's have You can see how this engine revs uponly to 7k because of bad timing order.
You just know it's a good car when Henry has that grin! Hope Alfa have finally made a truly desirable car. Personally, I just wish it had a little more Italian flair in the styling, though it may be better in the metal. I see a lot of BMW 3 series in the side profile. It would be a real shame if Alfa have produced a car that is a total reverse of their recent 'great to look at, less good to drive' efforts, especially as design is something Italians (and the French too for that matter) have always excelled at.
Sounds like it should have more revs. Weirdly. must just be the new era of everything turbo, dulls that peak note as you reach the limit and the lower limiters. It gives great performance, but it does make a lot of the cars feel like they're losing some of their soul haha. A Cayman GTS is always going to sound better than the new 718 in turbo form. You might be going "slower" but the enjoyment's probably more. Same with the V8 M3's in comparison to the straight 6 M4's etc etc
When people say iT has no resale value just drive iT for fun and keep iT. Alfa's are instant classics and this will be for sure. This car will be a sure classic and the prices wil drop and Theo rise rise rise
They should put this engine in the 4C, revise the chassis set up, update the interior a bit and see it become the success it should have been. The car is still fairly new so they are in time to do so for a mid-cycle facelift.
Shorter reviews are sometimes better. Can't say I agree with you however, on your views with the 4C, but then again, you've probably driven one! Alfisiti forever
I would choose the manual, that's one of the things that makes this more appealing than the competition. Not sure about the styling though. The 159 was pretty, and the 156 even more so. This has too much BMW in it's styling imo
People always complaining on tv that car makers don't make manuals anymore, but when they do, they don't test it?! Manual or auto, they are both 3.9 to 100 km/h
Its hard to say having not driven the Alfa, but I would like to think I would have this over a M3/M4. Neither one would be a track car for myself so from the point of driving on the limit and lap times I couldn't give a shit.
I feel like Fiat ought to give the ghibli and Levante to Alfa instead of Maserati. It would simultaneously help build Alfa's brand image and product lineup and keep Maserati from diluting theirs.
all very nice but the BIG mistake is one: the price starts at 79.000 euro (no carbon seats, no carbon exterior pack, etc). The Giulia is not a 4C (low production numbers = who cares about incomes), the Giulia has to sell! Now, I can understand that rivals are pretty much close to that price but Alfa just can't price this car at that level..I mean, ok the engine is there, but what about the rest? the interior is still "meh", materials are nicer than before but stil not "german"..and overall it just can't cost 79k. I would have rather suggested a less powerful engine, around 380/400 (more than enough to have fun) and a price around 50k (so with optionals you can hit 55/60).
+AN D1 Sure, but let me point out First that i didn't offend you, i didn't say that you are stupid but only your comment, second Alfa already have normal version that goes from 35500 € to 60000€, with a range of HP that goes from 150 to 300 (with the future V6 diesel), this version is not made for making sell numbers, it is just for collectionist or car enthusiast.... it cost less then any other competitor, have more power and tecnology and her optional are the same of her competitors like the carbon ceramic brakes or the carbon fiber seats.
The interior are the best in it's class, both with desing and material from the opinione of journalist who see it in person, both on the normal and sport version, this car doesn't have anything less than her competitors
+AN D1 Auto Motor und sport says: "Der Innenraum lädt klar gegliedert und mit angenehmen Materialien ein; das Qualitätsniveau liegt etwa zwischen 3er BMW und Audi A4" so kinda between Audi and BMW in quality wise
Seems to me this is positioned as a "baby" Maserati, as it shares much of the DNA, hopefully it wont have the scary servicing costs as well..how close to the Maserati will it be priced? Think the Steering wheel switchgear comes from GM, looks like insignia/Astra switches..
Close in this version. But this car is faster and lighter than a Ghibli and you can have carbon ceramics. Full option It's 95000euro in Belgium and a Ghibli q4 is 105000 but on the Alfa you have alot more HP and Carbon ceramics and special carbon recaro seats and alot of safety features. Still this car is alot cheaper than an fully loaded M3 or C63 with carbon ceramics. This car is really a baby Ferrari so the best pick.

+W-James i'm with you! It looks magnificent!
i'm a Big fan of the (M)3 series, and i Have to admit i'd get this over the M3 too.
Look at his smile. no words needed
Real exhaust tips. Such a rarity on a performance sedan today. It's all in the details
the exhaust sounds pretty oldschool. i like that a lot
they're not the best for a v6 but can be upgraded

phone dial wheels are just so cool.

agreed

MC PORSCHE I'm used to maintaining a used M3, so not a huge issue :p
From the side it somehow reminds me of bmw M2
+danGTman You're not a real car enthusiast if you take anything TG says seriously. They're the Oprah of automotive journalism.

I need this car!!! Stunning
Beautiful car, power, beauty, sound, engine, what else? PERFECT, this is my Dream Car
I've never seen Henry look so happy. Must be good! Just as well I have a holding deposit done on it.
Relatively small engine, lots of power, Italian quality - yeah, that will last forever ;)
Who needs it to last forever, the important thing is that it beats the germans at their own game.
+slaWterCH A great alternative to the soul-less germans.
+Krusty Komedy Klassic their own game? alfa 75 is the "mother" of sporty sedans or however you wanna call it^^

That's makes me happy :). Curious about the futur test drive.
Very exiting review for a very exiting car. Thank you.
Is it coming to the US....if so I want one.
it is.
paulusgaming well then, that is great news. Next year I will be in the market, I will place this on my short list of possible choices..
I think this will be my next car in a few years time.
This is not what i expect from a BMW and now i have this option :-)
BTW i am a hard core nerd for RWD fun. So all the FWD competition is just not visible for me --> boooring.
Unlike the 4C (which is a great weekend car) this really could actually be a daily driver!
You're really getting a value Maserati here!!
I've been wanting a 4c for quite some time and was preparing to buy one... but after some deep thought, I might be getting a Guilia Q Verde instead
i remember sitting in the manual one on Vienna car show. It had one of the best seating position of all cars and that huge manual shift ball was my favourite of all times. Clutch was weird tho
+nonickname100 I tried it too in Vienna, but that one had the sport seats option. (which were amazing)
This one in the video only has the standard seats.
I think I found my new dream car... Gorgeous.
Beautiful alloy wheels
Actually this engine was proposed for the 488 but was dismissed from Ferrari due to known timing problems V6's have
You can see how this engine revs uponly to 7k because of bad timing order.
BS.. this engine will be used in the upcoming Ferrari Dino.
when can I get this for 15 grand used?
+Bart Van Riel English would be nice
***** used car, sorry not a native English speaker
Bart Van Riel just joking :)
***** wait, was occasion the correct English word for a used car?
+Bart Van Riel second hand you would say :)
the M3 Killer, ti amo Alfa!!
what is the driving feel steering feel like of this car compared to say a cayman gts, gt4, or 911 carrera s or gt3?
You just know it's a good car when Henry has that grin! Hope Alfa have finally made a truly desirable car. Personally, I just wish it had a little more Italian flair in the styling, though it may be better in the metal. I see a lot of BMW 3 series in the side profile. It would be a real shame if Alfa have produced a car that is a total reverse of their recent 'great to look at, less good to drive' efforts, especially as design is something Italians (and the French too for that matter) have always excelled at.
This has a nicer engine note than the 488 GTB's similar but 8 cylinder engine imo
this is how the M3 should have been
Sounds like it should have more revs. Weirdly. must just be the new era of everything turbo, dulls that peak note as you reach the limit and the lower limiters.
Fantastic... I WANT ONE... can't wait for it's value to plummet... then I'll defiantly get it for the price of a focus!
If the shift knob is the only problem for 6spd manual and not the actual throws then just get an aftermarket knob?
This is one of those cars that i feel like id rather have the auto than the manual.
how was the 4c a dissapointment?
How's the comfort level on the standard seat vs. the sparco carbon fiber seats?
When people say iT has no resale value just drive iT for fun and keep iT. Alfa's are instant classics and this will be for sure. This car will be a sure classic and the prices wil drop and Theo rise rise rise
Maserati should borrow this engine for a hardcore Ghibli. Sister company and all that...
I can't tell if buying one of these would be a huge mistake or not (given the un-addressed Alfa concerns). I just wish i could afford to find out.
is there going to be a more powerfull one of these like an m5 or e63
They should put this engine in the 4C, revise the chassis set up, update the interior a bit and see it become the success it should have been. The car is still fairly new so they are in time to do so for a mid-cycle facelift.
A 500hp would be amazing. And terrifying.
will there be a panoramic sunroof option?
Shorter reviews are sometimes better. Can't say I agree with you however, on your views with the 4C, but then again, you've probably driven one! Alfisiti forever
So.. Ferrari sedan is Alfa Romeo from now on
+Turboslang like "Ferrari" was Alfa in the old days, nothing new they have been always tied up. Alfa is "mother" of Ferrari
I would choose the manual, that's one of the things that makes this more appealing than the competition. Not sure about the styling though. The 159 was pretty, and the 156 even more so. This has too much BMW in it's styling imo
So great! Hope it's a succes. If I had the money I'd sure buy one to help make it a succes.
Those seat bolsters look massive on Henry's waist.
Beautiful video, but Balocco is near Turin ;)
Now to just strap a good exhaust on it, i bet that engine would sound much better with a louder exhaust
It only needs a good sound, for the rest. Just have it stock.
People always complaining on tv that car makers don't make manuals anymore, but when they do, they don't test it?! Manual or auto, they are both 3.9 to 100 km/h
A lot of exotic in a sedan package!!
Ohhhh I want one....!!!
Its hard to say having not driven the Alfa, but I would like to think I would have this over a M3/M4.
Neither one would be a track car for myself so from the point of driving on the limit and lap times I couldn't give a shit.
looks fantastic
I feel like Fiat ought to give the ghibli and Levante to Alfa instead of Maserati. It would simultaneously help build Alfa's brand image and product lineup and keep Maserati from diluting theirs.
When will it be available in the US?.....
+Dario Molina from summer.
all very nice but the BIG mistake is one: the price starts at 79.000 euro (no carbon seats, no carbon exterior pack, etc). I would have rather suggested a less powerful engine, around 380/400 (more than enough to have fun) and a price around 50k (so with optionals you can hit 55/60).
stupidest comment ever....
+Ivan Fontana your comment is the stupidest comment ever..You should explain rather than insult others
+AN D1 Auto Motor und sport says: "Der Innenraum lädt klar gegliedert und mit angenehmen Materialien ein;
das Qualitätsniveau liegt etwa zwischen 3er BMW und Audi A4" so kinda between Audi and BMW in quality wise
How much does this cost in the UK?
It's...it's....beautiful.
Can't wait to see the reviews of the regular version and watch the infatuation turn into dread.
I have to Have it... No matter What!!!
It's killer! I want to do a long stunt sequence with it being chased by a Nissan GT-R.
