- I've been getting really into VR again recently, and I've been using the Samsung Odyssey Plus Windows Mixed Reality headset for four years now, so I thought i'd make a review.
This review is based on my experience of using the headset for about 4 years, and I cover the headset, lenses, controllers and tracking.

It has high resolution use 300 or 200 per cent super sampling you are gonna fall from your chair
Still a great VR headset
You can push the supersampling to 200% easily with an RTX 2070 and avobe. You dont need the 4080 to get that high. The resolution isnt demanding on modern hardware
I use the Odyssey+'s displays in my GearVR modded Vive Pro Eye and I gotta admit, I love the approach with the Anti-SDE layer that Samsung made with those displays. They are still regular oled, not microoled, but it fixes so many issues those older oled panels had back in the day that I somewhat fell in love with them.
Fun fact, those displays can actually handle a little bit of overclocking. I run mine at 120hz.
thats awesome! i have put gearvr lenses in my odyssey+ i have a vive pro with gearvr lenses to. the vive is a clearer but i aslo kinda like the anti sde. were you able to clock the vive pro with the original displays also ?
@@madsimilius7057 Yeah. the Ody+ and the VP/VPE use the same display part number. I've had a few displays around, four Ody+ displays and four stock VPE displays, they could all handle 120hz, though it only seems to be possible with AMD drivers right now since Geforce keeps resetting it back to 90hz everytime you make a custom resolution.
(Despite them both being the same displays, the Anti-SDE is specific to the Ody+ of course, but the rest is identical).
You can just disassemble the VP/VPE, take the display out of its ribbon cable and slide the Ody+ displays in. If you swap them, make sure you zero-out the mura correction in the SteamVR config, similar how you would adjust the lens distortion for the GearVR lens mod.
@@Sepfox thank you :) i did manage to clock my vive pro to 120hz so that it says its 120hz in nvidia controll panel, but in steam it says 90hz and stops it at 90. when i clock it down to 72hz it plays smooth at 72hz even if steam vr says its 90 hz in the video settings where you choose supersampling. Maby its steam holding it back ? or maby the fact that i use a nvidia rtx card ? I've had many vr headsets , even the varjo aero was to me a downstep from the vive and odyssey , so i sold it again. Next headset i will try is the psvr2 with Ivry drivers. It has frenel lenses, but for some reason they are clear and without god rays.(something i did not belive before i tried them) The brightness, hdr and 10bit color in them is awesome, and they are 4k. If the hdr and 10bit colors work on pc i think its gonna be awesome!!! one bad thing about the psvr2 though is the muira. Just waiting for a virtuallink adapter i've ordered to be able to use it with the rtx 4090 and a dp emulator from ivry. If you wanna try this with an amd gpu with usb c, you only need the drivers from ivry .
@@madsimilius7057 Yeah clocking to 120hz on VP/VPE is a pain on Nvidia, I dont know about anyone on the facetracking discord that actually managed to pull it off.
On radeon you just make a custom resolution in adrenalin with descrete gpu mode off, and then enable it again and it's done. SteamVR should say 120hz too or it won't work.
And yeah, PSVR is for sure interesting, but since eyetracking aparently does not work (even with the new official adapter releasing early august), it's kind of out of the question to me.
I'm a filthy furry and kiiiind of give a lot of value to eyetracking and facetracking in VR, it's something I cannot give away anymore, sadly.
Just picked one up for a seated position in sim racing and it's great with assetto corsa
How is it?
@frederikmolenkamp1850 I enjoyed it for what it was at 80 bucks 2nd hand couldn't complain. I did have issues tracking in low light though. I have since switched to quest 3 and it's amazing.
The non plus version is actually better, the plus has a diffusion screen over the OLED panel to try to mitigate the screen door effect. But it also makes the overall image quality a bit soft.
Non plus doesn’t have a Bluetooth integrated tho

weird. i've never had an issue with the weight. that's what I thought the adjustment on the back was for...
Enlarge the bottom of the face gasket don't block the light leakage. This will give you crazy fov. Use VRSS for fixed foveated rendering.Also back of the headset up and front down.

@@jamesharrison8426 no, unscratch the bottom face gasket don't leave anything below your eyes to allow your face to enter completely inside.

Fire video, i never thought I would ever want to get a VR headset. I like the way you described it. but is it a good starting VR headset for someone like me who has never used VR?. Also, does it require a strong laptop/pc?.
Could you also do Vader immortal, or even show some blade and sorcery mods would be really cool or even super HOT! btw hope your year is going well.
Long time no see! Unfortunately this headset is discontinued, but an excellent option would be the Meta Quest 2. It’s a standalone headset, meaning you don’t need a pc! I’ll definitely be making more VR content since I enjoyed this video and hopefully I can provide some insights and value for people thinking about getting into it. Thanks for the feedback!
I put samsung gear vr lenses in mine (the same as they put in the vive pro) and its sooo much better! if you want to do this you have to the headsett appart to get the awfull frenell lenses out. I have had reverb g2, meta q3 and the varjo aero, but i still like odyssey the best.
Didn’t even know you could do that! Just got a quest 3 and been doing some testing and i’m really liking the wireless pcvr and the pancake lenses
@@Vanity7k yeah the Q3 is a good package, colors and black level is better than the varjo aero . Lenses are super clear but still has some glare due to being a two glass lens. But 10x better than the godrays in the unmodded Odyssey . I use the headsett mostly for simracing so i dont care about the controllers. :p Q3 has lots of good things going for it. I think i am the only one who has made the Odyssey lens mod.

Does it cause problems in games? Will there be any problem in supporting VR games on PC?
I've never had problems in game. Using through steam vr.
I bought it in 2018 and still works fine.
I've mostly played Project cars 2, Assetto Corsa, War Thunder, MSFS and half life alyx.
I realized the tracking issue was happening when the light in my room was too dim or near a white wall where the camera tracker doesn't have point of reference to track movements.
Controllers get lost when out of camera views but quickly come back once in camera views again.
How does it perform in Half Life? How is the gaming experience?
Does Windows Mixed Reality cause problems in current games? Will there be any software problems when I purchase it?
Works like a charm, never had issues in 3 months
was looking for something to use with my racing wheel setup, so i wont need controllers and will be seated at all times, would you recomend this?
also are the headphones/speakers detachable?
The speakers aren’t detachable as far as I know, and I’ve been using mine a lot recently. I would recommend this headset if you can get it for around 150 and have a good gpu to boost the resolution. I’m releasing a video this week talking about my experience using it rn and my thoughts on using a 5 yr old headset

do you know where I can find the drivers for it?
If you use windows 10 or 11 it should install them automatically untill they drop support for it sometime next year.
I loved the headset, but it crapped out, claiming something wrong with the usb3 cable even though its been babied since I've had it. If it weren't for that, I'd recommend it as one of the best.

I got one of these for 250
Sold it because it's hot, heavy, controller tracking is meh and build quality is cheap for them.

I am looking for a cheap way to get into VR and this seems like a pretty good option given I found one for about $125. Does it make sense to get one to use and probably upgrade in a bit if I like it?

The oculous 2 is much better and you can get it for the sane price range of 125
I'm having trouble with this Oculus, when I go to play it always tells me that the cables are not connected and the system doesn't recognize it, even though I have updated everything, I have an RTX 3090 and a good setub and I still face problems.
What are you using to try to play games? I didn’t realize the oculus desktop app is mandatory for using it with pc, so you always have to launch that along with steam vr
Best to get a pcvr .. same here with quest 2 does that and in games now like ghost of tabor in silos looking down hallway where the red lights are it's blurry and it's only stuff that has red. Samsung odyssey plus I had was perfect but sold it cause of windows saying they are not supporting the g2 and Samsung
I've had 3 so far. I use it up until this day. My only real complaint is the tracking.

Yes, but you require 3rd party app to make it work.
I have the original odyssey. Regret buying it tbh. It was a huge step up from the rift but the pentile subpixels made it look much lower rees with poor screen door effect. Even the quest 1 was better. Now with the quest 3 the new lenses are one giant sweet spot with crystal clear images. It blows my mind. Maybe il give the odyssey away idk.
My experience with psvr 2 and quest 3.
After using oled psvr 2 for 3 months I bought quest 3 and I was like : " what a piece of dogsh9t is it?!" the picture quality was so poor I didn't believe I was playing vr
eu to passando um sufoco comeste oculus sempre quando vou jogar me diz que os cabos não estão conectados e o sistema não reconhece , mesmo eu tendo atualizados tudo eu tenho uma rtx 3090 um setub bom e mesmo assim enfrento problemas.

Got one for around 200 bucks and I use it for half-life alyx and saints and sinners, and its pretty damn good.

@@furkaninci2496they made Alyx for this headset. Surely used as a base for WMR version. Game has a many dark places, so looks amazing on AMOLED screen

@@DamianCentkiewicz Bro, how is the joystick support? Does it work good with joystick like Quest 2?
@@furkaninci2496 movement in all new games is on joystick. I had only problems with Spice&Wolf. I played only in Vertigo 2 from this year and has control for first gen WMR controllers. New version Beat Saber doesn’t has a menu button for controllers. Remember, more problematic is a second gen WMR controllers because has a less buttons.

I tried Pico 4 on Black Friday, because I'm frustrated that O+ I have since March 2019 (Oculus was dissapointment). I thought that WMR has a shitty controllers tracking, but no. It‚a way better than Pico 4. In WMR if I have a controller behind my back, still trying to tracking position and makes this good, not perfect, but good. For Pico 4 in this case, controller doesn't exist. I know that Microsoft improved a tracking and battery life with updates. On Eneloop Pro from 8 hours to 30 hours. I don't see many glare on the lenses in Odyssey+, maybe on edges. On Pico 4 I see second picture on the lenses. When most of the screen fills a white color it is nightmare. I had a problem with god rays in first HP WMR in 2018 year (not Reverb) and my first was a PSVR in 2017 year, so Pico 4 is my fourth headset and I'll return this. I never buy again a LCD screen. Only OLED. Bigscreen Beyond is amazing, but using a SteamVR bases. I don't have a space for this.
I thought Pico 4 would’ve been awesome, guess not! I actually get a decent amount of glaring especially in dark situations, it can get pretty bad on the O+

But I really miss the latency free oled on my o+. It was actually more immersive because of that

Not sure about the 12gb 3060 as i’ve heard there’s better. The 8tb I would say is super overkill, it’d be better to have at least one NVME M.2 SSD of say 2TB and if you can another of 1 or 2 TB for the fastest boot and load speeds. Do you have the t300rs wheel?
