Kendrick Lamar is something different in hip-hop. He's completely in hip-hop's traditions, has all the elements of hip-hop, and yet feels like he operates on a different level from other hip-hop artists. I've never heard a hip-hop artist as consistent or conceptual as he is. His production choices are also almost always well chosen and serve a larger purpose.
I'll say this about Kendrick, he just speaks to young black men in a way that some artists have trouble doing. It is sometimes hard to listen to a rapper talkimg about gang shit when you cant relate. Not to say that rapping about gang stuff is bad, but the Kenny talks about that Black mentality. To Pimp a Butterfly will always album be my favorite not cause it was my introduction to Kenny, but for some odd reason my mindset changed when I heard the album. Can't explain it but I think Kendrick helps young black men get through some shit that we take for granted or dont know about yet
Dude Even though I’m a white, my mindset also completely changed after listening to TPAB and that’s also why it’s my favorite album. As a privileged white teen I didn’t really understand true problems in the world until I started listening to K.dot and TPAB was what changed me. Helped me see the world in a new perspective
@@PK-po9lf Thats another thing. White people like yourself have to be educated on racial injustice while black men must be educated on racial clarity. I for one think that TPAB should be listened to all Americans to dive into the black male psyche. Good looks man
Z Henderson Yeah dude one love ✊ Just from observing the people around me I think one of the main problem is that most white suburbans have such a closed mind. I remember listening to To Pimp a Butterfly for the first time when I was 13, I was still pretty young so my mind was free and open, since then I’ve never turned back, probably listened to the album 50 times while learning something new each session. On the contrary I tried showing this really conservative dude TPAB, and he was just so closed minded to the point where he couldn’t even try to understand things from Kendrick’s point of view. I feel like it’s all about understanding but I don’t know I’m just a teen
PK 0302 same here man, growing up in an area like myself as a white teenager, there wasn’t tons of African Americans at my school growing up in your typical suburbs but once I began listening to Kendrick, it made me want to understand more and not just be ignorant to the worlds problems, that didn’t concern myself. It made me angry to see all the hurt going on and it compelled me to listen and try to understand what I can do better as a human being living on this earth. I know that sounds corny but it really is the truth. I’m 19 now and coming into my sophomore year in college and it really amazes me how deep Kendrick’s music is and how it applies to America today. My brother would bump his old mixtapes all the time, go to his concerts, hell Kendrick even revealed HiiiPower at the concert my brother went to. So saying that this made me feel nostalgic would be an understatement. I may be biased because I’m from Compton but in my eyes Kendrick is without a doubt my favorite rappers ever and is one of the greatest to ever do it. I was a fan before he even appeared on the billboard, before he was the biggest on TDE, and seeing him where he is makes me happy because he came where I come from.
Perfect video and perfect timing. Kendrick spreads a mad message and spreads awareness of what goes on in colored communities and immigrants. It's not their fault; we have to learn from the past, tear down those who like it, and change the future. 💜
Don’t given Kendrick a savior complex. While he may seem deserving of the title, I’d like to think that his intentions while making music isn’t to be praised for it, although I’m sure he understands the magnitude his words have. To me, it comes off as words that must be said for the greater good, whether it be to further his career or to further his people, which he’s a part of. To set him up as some savior would mean acknowledging in some way(s), that he’s *better* than us and we’re unfit to save ourselves, which I don’t think Kendrick believes. “Mortal man” does this comment all the more justice. “When shit his the fan, is you still a fan?” Because many want to grant Kendrick said complex, he has no room for mistakes. How will you feel when your “savior” lets you down? It’s better off to discard that title ahead of time. This isn’t to discredit the things he’s done and is going to do but to put them in a different light.
This reminds of the time when people tried canceling j Cole because they gave him that title. Then when he didn’t live up to their expectations they got mad at him.
oshos disciple - did you hear his flow in Black Friday? Cartoons and cereal? The delivery on duckworth or dna? His rhymes on rigamrotous or for free? I’m from New York and it’s easy to say Kendrick is on another level than big Sean
I got my first appreciation of Kendrick's extraordinary talent from listening to the Dissect podcast that did an in-depth analysis of his album To Pimp A Butterfly. I've been a massive fan ever since. He is an a-typical "rap star".
I know this comment could potentially start a flamewar but there's no one in this man's class. People cite J.Cole but there's no artistry category in which Cole is remotely close to Kendrick. Kendrick is a once in a generation artist and I'm interested to see who the next incarnate will be for future generations.
Nah man. I'll agree that Kendrick comes before Cole but Cole is up there. I don't think we can say Cole isn't close. However Cole's impactful songs to turn up songs ratio isn't nearly as good as Kendricks.
I am currently watching your videos back to back and I realized you have a great appreciation for art and you share your knowledge and I love it. We thank you for that and appreciation it. You have helped me understand that art is not about it's creation but about the artist and the process it takes for an artist to get to the "end" of that creation. Keep it up man and never give up. You just gained a loyal subscriber but not a patron. I am just a 19 year old I don't have that type of money right now
as a 24 year old artist i needed to hear this. i need to remind myself that these people put in years of hard graft to get to where theyre at now, and although there are some artists that are overnight successes, its reassuring to see artists like kendrick that have grafted hard as fuck to get where theyre at. so much respect for it.
Nah. He got lucky. That's it. This shouldn't be reassuring. You can have all the talent. But if you don't live near somebody, or know somebody with influence or money. You'll get nowhere. Right in the beginning. He got lucky with a free studio. That's it.
Thanks bud. I remember when I first heard Kendrick Lamar, and realising years later that it was him. I was such a big lil Wayne fan and would listen to any song with him in it. The song is called Colors - Jay Rock ft K.Dot and Wayne
I just got into listening to his music. I got my introduction through DAMN (which quickly became an everyday essential), but I’ve been working my way backwards ever since. And although I don’t even live in America or have anything even close to the stories his songs tell, I just listen to them and sometimes I get really emotional and start crying. Kendrick is a legend, and although I got into it a little late, I’m still so grateful I decided to listen to him.
i'm so into his wisdom that i never even realised I was binge watching all his interviews trying to know what he thinks, what's on his mind. it got me hooked even tho I don't get much of the references in his music 'cause i'm asian so I don't know much about the events or the culture. but man, this man is giving me goose bumps everytime. truly a living legend rh.
Not rap battles man, he was just freestyling with the homies! Been rocking with Kdot since OD days man. I got playlists full of every single kendrick video on youtube up until about 2012/3 though haha! Well put together as always tho!
Been a fan of Kendrick since 2010, way before most had even hard of him. I remember telling everyone who would listen that this dude is this next big star. I really enjoyed this video, well done Jake. To this date I don't think Kendrick gets enough credit for his word play or intelligence. I look forward to the next K Dot video. 👊🏽
He won a Pulitzer Prize. I think the credit is there, fam. Not sure how much more credit he could get. Not just winning that his career and body of work speaks for itself. In short, I'm not sure that comment holds merit.

This was fantastic. I legit don't know where the 20 minutes went; I most certainly wasn't expecting it to be perhaps just a third of what you had to say about him. It is Kendrick though, so I know you can never say enough about him, but this video was still amazing.

Perfect video and perfect timing. Kendrick spreads a mad message and spreads awareness of what goes on in colored communities and immigrants. It's not their fault; we have to learn from the past, tear down those who like it, and change the future. 💜
1st time I saw Kendrick was in Fresno...he had opened for Drake....instant fan for life
Boy am I ready for this one. Kung fu Kenny x Jake Zeeman lets goooo
Jude Flowerdew Yessir... Whatever happens on Earth stays on Earth
What a phenomenally edited video man. Your skills and documentary is on point
This isn’t to discredit the things he’s done and is going to do but to put them in a different light.
respect
This reminds of the time when people tried canceling j Cole because they gave him that title. Then when he didn’t live up to their expectations they got mad at him.
Thats why he said "make room for mistakes & depression", leaders arent perfect but if the shoe fits it fits.
EagleZtoTheGrave I agree that Kendrick is a leader. But a leader and savior aren’t the same thing.
Terrell Williams perfect example.
I have shit to do rn so I was just going to put this in my watch later but damn the editing of that intro hooked me in
The world will only know peace when everyone agrees that Kendrick is the best rapper alive
oshos disciple - Kendrick rhymes 4/10. Bye lol
oshos disciple - 🤣🤣
oshos disciple - did you hear his flow in Black Friday? Cartoons and cereal? The delivery on duckworth or dna? His rhymes on rigamrotous or for free? I’m from New York and it’s easy to say Kendrick is on another level than big Sean
@oshos disciple - 10 different voices
@oshos disciple - big sean isnt top 50 while Kendrick is top 5 of all time
Your editing for the intro is greatly appreciated holy cow
BRO That control verse was disgusting the conversations that were had in schools! 🤦🏾♂️ Hip Hop needed that shit mehn! 🔥
this is hands down one of the best videos i’ve seen
You already had my like after that introduction. Cant wait for the second part
Savior in the mainstream............real hip hop will always dwell in the underground
These vids are so refreshing thanks for posting man
Here in 2024 👑 Kendrick
I got my first appreciation of Kendrick's extraordinary talent from listening to the Dissect podcast that did an in-depth analysis of his album To Pimp A Butterfly. I've been a massive fan ever since. He is an a-typical "rap star".
WENT THE FUCK OFF W THE INTRO.. DAYUM!!
I know this comment could potentially start a flamewar but there's no one in this man's class. People cite J.Cole but there's no artistry category in which Cole is remotely close to Kendrick. Kendrick is a once in a generation artist and I'm interested to see who the next incarnate will be for future generations.
How is cole not on kendricks class
Nope no flamewar lmao
kanye lol
Kendrick is undoubtedly the best but Cole ain't no joke too
Nah man. I'll agree that Kendrick comes before Cole but Cole is up there. I don't think we can say Cole isn't close.
However Cole's impactful songs to turn up songs ratio isn't nearly as good as Kendricks.
The intro, the research, the editing. Wow
The nostalgia lol, I dont show Kendrick enough love these days
that concert at 15:55 where they were all singing maad city must've been such an incredible experience
Great editing is such a god send. Great job man.
I am just a 19 year old I don't have that type of money right now
I’m so mad that bad kid chill city isn’t on many streaming services
ay look over ur shoulders is so fire
Bro what? How have I never heard of this??
Will Carroll LISTEN BRO
I love regular trees and please kill my vibe
@@khem8998 LMFAOOO

Ayo thats kinda sus
Been waiting for you to cover Kendrick!!!!! ONE OF YOUR BEST VIDEOS! Keep it coming dude.
Daaaam hearing the crowd sing maad city just gives u goosebumps
top quality production Jake, have been looking forward to this!
Jus found this channel bro. Straight fire fr man that Nas illmatic video was fuckin heat too
The intro alone may be your magnum opus
as a 24 year old artist i needed to hear this. i need to remind myself that these people put in years of hard graft to get to where theyre at now, and although there are some artists that are overnight successes, its reassuring to see artists like kendrick that have grafted hard as fuck to get where theyre at. so much respect for it.
This is the type of editing I hope to reach on my soon to come sports channel. Really well done.
If Kendrick ever sees this he hopefully sees my comment too: His music is absolutely perfect. Love him
I just got into listening to his music.
Kendrick's to pimp a butterfly and damn is one of the best albums in hip hop ever imho
Facts
Gkmc?
@@rahulg3714 It's much better than DAMN..
I still think his untitled collection was by far the best album ever released.
@@DZ-jm1my What
i'm so into his wisdom that i never even realised I was binge watching all his interviews trying to know what he thinks, what's on his mind. it got me hooked even tho I don't get much of the references in his music 'cause i'm asian so I don't know much about the events or the culture. but man, this man is giving me goose bumps everytime. truly a living legend rh.
Not rap battles man, he was just freestyling with the homies!
Been rocking with Kdot since OD days man. I got playlists full of every single kendrick video on youtube up until about 2012/3 though haha!
Well put together as always tho!
as a battle rapper/musician I feel you lmao I agree
The fact that Tupac said you wanna be like Trump given the current climate just gave me chills.
It's crazy how he was still revelant in our life today. Ruined America and set us back smh. We still have so much to fix.
@@gusb4309 "Ruined America" Lol he tried to fix it.
@@mudkip5208 yeah he fixed it through Twitter lmao 🤣
@@mudkip5208 a Trump supporter in a hiphop video. Interesting...
@@hecatrice2064 It's almost as if people can have outside interests unrelated to their political beliefs 🤯. Way to generalize.
can you do one on J. Cole later down the track?
💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥
Yes!!!
Amazing job on the j. Cole doc :)
Well done Jake, this is beautiful art.
This video was incredibly made. I love Kendrick Lamar, he needs a movie made on him
Best artist documentaries on UA-cam. Keep it up man
seriously good job on this video man. glad i got this in my recommended
This is one HELL OF Documentary. The intro, The Narrative, The Artist, and the ART!!!!
@@georgethompson1991 yeah Cole is the real underrated dude..

holy shit this is the best video i have seen so far and ive been on youtube for way too long.
i’m dying to see part 2 of this series
the introduction is highly appreciated
Jake this is the first video I've seen from you, it came on my recommended. the quality and thought that went into your intro and video. AMAZING Deffoo subscribing💙💙😍
You just reminded me of why I became a Kendrick fan
This was fantastic. I legit don't know where the 20 minutes went; I most certainly wasn't expecting it to be perhaps just a third of what you had to say about him. It is Kendrick though, so I know you can never say enough about him, but this video was still amazing.
This dude deserves so much more subscribers for the kinda content he is giving us.
