One of my favourite things about Kendrick is how he's not interested in blanketly condemning things like violence and drug abuse, but rather he's more interested in exploring *why* people do those things in a very beautiful and nuanced way
Exactly. It's the fact that he even admitted to participating in those activities and exposed his own hypocritical views at times makes him incredibly human and relatable. No other rappers were able to do that.

I listened to it front to back for days as I painted 8 to 12 hours a day nonstop for months. I should clarify, I listened to Damn only, for one month, and then started getting into his other albums but I did listen to Damn for months mixed in with those other albums. He was just an exquisite storyteller, He is an exquisite storyteller thoughtful caring surprising energetic, almost as if he’s challenging you to do more without bragging about what all the things are he has done. if I ever saw him I just say thank you so much for helping me find a way to get my life back.
Damn was one of the first rap albums I had ever heard. I was like 12 when it was released and it threw me into the world of rap. That first time hearing DNA and YAH and DUCKWORTH was crazy. Even BLOOD hit me. There wasn't one song that didn't hold weight for me.

The editing on this... absolutely fantastic. We can feel the passion you have for Kendrick's music through all the details you've put in the aesthetics and the development of the video. Just an incredible work, thank you for doing this
Thank you for giving TPAB and Mr. Morale the love they deserve. ALL of Kendrick’s music is SO deep and layered. There’s so many double and triple entendres, word play, and deep emotional messages within these albums that people tend to overlook on first, second or third listen. There’s always something new to feel or experience when listening to Kendrick’s albums. Also I agree that DAMN is a more commercial version of his albums BECAUSE it is an easier listen sonically than Mr. Morale or his previous albums. However, the underlying messages and struggles presented are still so deep and emotional and I think that album was a GREAT way for Kendrick to get the general public listening to his music
Ok getting chills towards the end of this video. The narrator/writer was brilliant, few could’ve done better to encapsulate the essence of Kendrick’s discography and career like he did
This video is ridiculously well done, the animation, the research, the in depth looks, just amazing. I watch pretty much all your videos but this one stands out to me as a masterpiece. Very well done.
Solid video. It felt a little condensed, but not in a bad way. I’d say this video should be considered more of a crash course on Kendrick’s mainstream career, the very tip of the iceberg as far as “understanding” Kendrick as an artist. This video is also riddled with very objective opinions, focusing more on the listener’s critical reception of his work and not so much on the actual craft of making his music. I think the Black Panther Album could’ve been explored a little bit more as a major moment in pop culture as well as black culture, and I think “untitled unmastered” should’ve gotten some attention.
@@Volksgeist it’s kinda crazy to think about the black panther movie and soundtrack. It’s one of the few positive things to unite people on a global scale I can think of in recent times
The Control verse should have been mentioned in this. That was a complete shake up of the scene at the time and forced so many rappers to bring back that hunger and competitiveness to hip hop again
Nah not really. He wasn’t the first to make a verse name dropping and challenging artist to step up. It was overhyped. Glad this video focused on Kendrick’s major work through his albums and artistry
@@VinexAestheticsBruh, you weren’t even coherent, or old enough to even know what the Control verse was. Lmao. Way overhyped and was weak as fuck lyrically. “Oooo, he said a bunch of people’s names! i never listened to kendrick or drake (not a hiphop fan) but this beef makes me discover kendrick. i love me a good artist. there will biopic of him later on. he's only getting started
I LOVE GKMC and TPAB is an amazing concept album, but in terms of raw quality and passion MMABS might be one of my favorites of all time above everything else Kendrick has made. People don't cling too it because they don't really get the rawness of the album and what it means. It's about really growing up and healing on the issues that made you need to heal like his prior works. I honestly can't stop listening too it. I'd be lying it I don't start to tear up at times with the parallels in my own path of life.
Mr. Morale has unfolded with new meaning continuously since it came out. It's truly my favorite by him, and it brings the genre to a whole new level. I believe another album will come along in the '20s (whether by him or by someone he paved the way for) which will build upon its aesthetic and become an undisputed classic of the genre.
To this day. I’ve never skipped a Kendrick song because I learn or feel something new everytime. He is a true artist in every shape and form. Not just a rapper.
Have to leave a comment just to let you know how great of a video this is. You embody a true Kendrick fan, not just a mainstream fan who was expecting another album like damn full of radio hits.
This video not only does Kendrick Lamar justice, but the explanation of “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” was perfect. For some, that album might have “came & went” but I still listen to it often and too knew before it dropped that it was never going to live up to everyone’s high expectations after he went MIA for all of those years. Kendrick deserves all of the flowers in the world & I hope he drops another album.
Sing About me, I’m Dying of Thirst has got to be one of my favorite songs. I could also listen to it non stop and I actually did ngl at work. It made me tear up and a songs got to be great for that
Kendrick is the only rapper in today's times along with Cole who has never dropped a bad album. I wonder why people hate on Lamar's new album Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers. It is also such a good album. United in grief, N95, Die Hard, Rich Spirit. All good songs. All teach some lesson. Kendrick might not be relatable but he is a rebel, and only if we go deep into his music and lyrics you can realize this.
Yo bro, just wanted 2 say that Jay Rock was acc the first artist signed to TDE. Punch confirmed it in a video in the “Blueprint” interview series. Keep up the work 💯
You hit every margin in Kendrick’s music and how it’s perfect about oneself over everyone else. Kendrick inspired me to take his vulnerability into words for the public to hear for an honest man and I’m gonna do it better in my way
I'm a Executive Producer, and I must say, your vision throughout the Kendrick Lamar video, was TOTALLY on point. Keep up the great work. I would love to talk with you about my music productions and projects. Indeed you will get a percentage. Great work keep it up!!!
Sing about me im dying of thirst is one of my favorite songs as well, there is just so much effort and emotion put into one song, and I hate that no one ever talks about it or listens to it because it’s too long
going back to kedrick lamar 2009 EP and hearing him, man he had it on lock for soo damn long. crazy you didnt mention it with all the bangers back to back. which overly dedicated had some of them but remixes, that 2009 EP tho defiantly put him on the map IMO. Great video
I've had a pleasure to hear him live recently. The best executed concert of a raper I've witnessed to date. Thank you for this video! It was both well researched and beautifully edited.
I loved your breakdown in my opinion Kendrick Lamar is my all-time favorite top five number one and Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers is a MASTERPIECE!!! If DAMN won a Pulitzer Prize, this new album deserves a Nobel Peace Prize period
I am SO GLAD you put this video together. Before I saw it, I didn't know who Kendrick Lamar REALLY WAS. And I'm an old-school Gen-X rap aficionado. I may dip into listening to this brother...
I have to agree with your take on GKMD being a album that is universal to everyone because all though I don’t partake in any gang culture or illegal stuff like that I can relate to much of the themes of this album like poverty, seeing people around being influenced by the wrong things, and generally just believing in something to escape the evils in our community. And I’m from the east coast, specifically Pennsylvania, but still his words still made an immense impact on who I am today.
Great work on this video ! You went into details on every album & what it meant at that point in time. Kendrick no doubt is one of my favorite rappers of all-time. Nobody will replicate his talent let alone achieve what he has done in his career. It's crazy to think that he can be gone for a certain amount of time and as soon as he hints an album...the entire world goes crazy and breaks all social medias ! That's the scale he is at in his career and I do not see anyone reaching to his status.
I agree with all the things you said. Since the first song I listened 3 years ago, I think he is a full package. In all the songs I felt understood an much more, mostly in the last one. I know all the songs and I found what I was searching. In that moment, when I heard that song, I found the one who has my same level of self-awarness. One after the another I thought "finally someone who understands me. Finally someone that thinks like me. Finally someone that learns and understands whatever he has around. Finally a brain that is like mine." Really, he saved my thoughts from their death. Since I was a kid, also now, I always been the most sensitive. Where my peers were that year, I was ten years above or more. I experienced may things precociously and a grew very quickly. But most of all my wisdom, from the pain and the problems I went through those years. Also now. The most of them faced alone, learning by myself everything. I also write but poems, I want to create a book by myself. I'm bad at rapping, but many people said that I'm very good for my age at writing, from many perspectives. The only thing is that I'm italian. I understand like my language the English, but I need to learn better from the point of view of the writing and speaking. So I mostly write in Italian, but I'm taking classes sp I only need patience. I love kendrick with all my heart.
With mr morale: We all see what happened to Kanye. What is happening to him. And Kanye NEVER dropped the “saviour” character unlike Kendrick. I feel like this is where you can see the difference between Kendrick and others. The self awareness while making albums that are culture changing. No one has managed to keep it this way. And you can hear him here accepting his saviour complex on DAMN a little.
Matt Jeezy, the one that said don't die, he is a genuine, compassionate, loving and amazing musician too. For years he worked at the URM in LA, great with kids too. It doesn't surprise me that he was so supportive of Kendrick. Birds of a feather 🙏❤
The Black Panther album is super underrated. It is one of my favorite albums. There are a couple skips, the tracks that don’t sound like Kendrick was involved in making. But all the Kendrick tracks are really good and all together when listened to one after another it’s an amazing listening experience. Just remove The Ways, I Am, Seasons, and Redemption and you have one amazing Kendrick album.
When I was younger I was struggling with drugs and being with the wrong crowd. Kendrick's music help me internalize this. So I agree with you that TPAB was universal. Now the theme that I perceive MMADBS wants to show is like talking to what I am experiencing as an adult. Thats just me. Great vid!
When Damn came out and I heard Humble for the first time on TV... I was like this guy is just trying to go Viral because going viral through internet was what everyone was trying at that time... But later listening to his old albums I got to know DAMN was just a call towards his late works and I explored and I loved it... So I wont say DAMN is a good album but it did what it had to do is give a wake up call to the world about his old music Speaking if Mr.Morale his latest album I have been hearing it on a loop... Its as it was said as a first person view of problems everyone is facing in day to day world... And he isn't preaching or boasting about ways how anyone should get out of it... Instead its what he is trying to do on daily basis clearly shows that he took change begins from ourselves to a personal level... My favourite track on Mr.Morale is Rich spirit and I listen to it because its more relatable since everyone is trying to be better version of themselves while also being vulnerable to all the shit going on in the outside world... So shutting oneself away from all the outside stuff is the only way to grow sanely in this generation ❤️ Also, I like how he starts the song N95 with hello new world showing that he wants to warn the next generation not to get stuck in the cycle of addiction, drugs, clout chase etc.
One thing you might have forgotten to mention is how deeply he pours his feelings for the respective coming albums with his "The Heart" tracks... Parts I and II go so hard in my opinion...
Thank you for the video. I love Kendrick and since TuPac was murdered, Kendrick has been the only rapper I truly listen to, but after watching your video I feel I have a better understanding of his albums, the stories behind each is amazing. Definitely going to listen to Good Kid, Maad City all over again from a fresh perspective. Thanks 🙏🏿
This was made a 1 year ago its still true today. Hes a one of a kind real artist and in this world full of fakery it refreshing to have someone come out and speak from their soul. I saw a lady coe out and call out a white dude for saying how happy it made him to see everyone coming together to celebrate his victory saying "im glad you like it this our music".but no one can really own a true artist a true artist trancends the shackles of racial, polictical and class barriers. His struggles speak to the working class (like me delivering food at 2am listening to Humble), his music so artfully composed he won a pulitzer (trancending class) a real first. We must treasure this man this amazing wonderful humble man. He is Our Beethoven, our Marley and I know he would hate me putting him on this pedestal but we need people like him in this world. God bless you all and sleep well ❤
This video is 6 months old, crazy how much the perception of mm&TBS has changed in just 6 months, it's truly going to go down as a all time classic and will challenge his previous work as his greatest project
*In my opinion*, what Volksgeist says in 23:01 is also a mirror to the beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar; Drake was a successful by faking things, but Kendrick is considered the winner of the beef because his entire career has been real and deep which allows people to connect with Kendrick more than Drake who makes surface level music.
Im a huge kendrick fan ever since section. 80, hes my #1 favorite dead or alive without a doubt, and its strange to me but other than GKMC, every album hes dropped since then, i initially dont hate but definetly dont love and will give like 1 full listen and not pick it up again for a couple months but then when i do im fucking hooked and will play it front to back constantly. And i think its about that time i go give mr. Morale that second playthrough
@@coryjackson6944 I did actually listen front to back during my shift at work the other day and sure enough l thoroughly enjoyed it and have a new respect for it. But Kendrick said it his self when he released tpab he knew it was going to challenge his listeners ears but if he's going to challenge himself he has to challenge his listeners too and I think that sentiment applies to mmatbs as well. So I don't find it surprising I always have to let them grow on me. Regardless k dots #1 dead or alive for me. Ain't even no argument Bout a big 3. Cole's nice and I love his music but Kendricks changed my life
Kendrick Lamar is extremely versatile and layered, he is one of the best rappers of all time and one of the best lyricist of the last 20 years. An extreme and legendary figure in the genre. His music is accompanied always with meaning and deep introspective substance. His albums will be studied and dissected for many years to come. On that note, and I speak as a fan… Most of his music isn’t “music”, it’s a character study; a conceptual mess meant to pick apart. It’s poetry and in terms of the sonic experience, only occasionally enjoyable. Mr Duckworth is an incredible author - but those who seek to indulge casually, alongside cynical critics and music connoisseurs - aren’t here to read and that’s why artist like Drake and many other sonically pleasing artist before him, thrive and survive and ultimately dominate. What makes your head bob, what makes your girl dance, what gets the party going? … not Kendrick Lamar, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Untitled unmastered has to get its own video and I agree about black panther.
@@Volksgeist it’s kinda crazy to think about the black panther movie and soundtrack. It’s one of the few positive things to unite people on a global scale I can think of in recent times
Nailed it! The swap meet does not look like that out here.....
@@Volksgeist will unmastered vid come out soon?
@@Volksgeist when is it dropping Philip ?
Ps. You content is top teir
Love your channel
The Control verse should have been mentioned in this. That was a complete shake up of the scene at the time and forced so many rappers to bring back that hunger and competitiveness to hip hop again
Nah fr, Drake was salty abt that verse for a bit too 😭
Nah not really. He wasn’t the first to make a verse name dropping and challenging artist to step up. It was overhyped. Glad this video focused on Kendrick’s major work through his albums and artistry
@@sb-ns8bl “It was overhyped”🤓🤓🤓
@@VinexAestheticsBruh, you weren’t even coherent, or old enough to even know what the Control verse was. Lmao. Way overhyped and was weak as fuck lyrically. “Oooo, he said a bunch of people’s names! Verse of THE CENTURY because I’m dense as fuck and love jumping on dick and hype trains.” 👩🏻🦯 leading the 👩🏻🦯
It was essential to his story, as was Untitled Unmastered only two things this was missing
This hits so different now
i never listened to kendrick or drake (not a hiphop fan) but this beef makes me discover kendrick. i love me a good artist. there will biopic of him later on. he's only getting started
Kendrick is keepin it real in a world where that is increasingly rare. Great video essay man.
Mr morale and the big steppers is his best album Imo
Because if Anthony killed Ducky Top Dawg could be serving life while I grew up without a father and die in a gunfight
Duckworth
~DAMN
So glad somebody made the reference
Wow, this was moving.
Thank you.
Not just a rapper.
in my opinion samidot, duckworth and mother i sober are the greatest stories ever told (i also love auntie diaries and father time tho)
Have to leave a comment just to let you know how great of a video this is. You embody a true Kendrick fan, not just a mainstream fan who was expecting another album like damn full of radio hits.
Could not agree more. Kendrick is a gift.
Thank you for deep dive and the information you gave us. Kendrick is truly the best artist alive to me ❤️
you deserve a Grammy for this 🔥🙇🏿♀️
This video not only does Kendrick Lamar justice, but the explanation of “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” was perfect. For some, that album might have “came & went” but I still listen to it often and too knew before it dropped that it was never going to live up to everyone’s high expectations after he went MIA for all of those years. Kendrick deserves all of the flowers in the world & I hope he drops another album.
after this recent hip hop beef between kendrick and drake, it made me understand that kendrick is really 'like that'. Im a fan!
Kendrick has thee best 5 album catalog in recent Hip Hop history.
"Oh you thought you had me all figured out? Take it from the horse's mouth you'll never understand me." -Kendrick Lamar's interlude
This video surprisingly kept me engaged the whole time and gave hella new invite on those albums. Thank u
Thank U for watching it man appreciate that
This was definitely one of the deepest and best analyses of a discography and overall story I’ve ever heard. Well written and beautifully thought out.
Appreciate the analysis you put into this. Great video
I literally cried watching this, so beautiful. I love Mr Duckworth
Yo bro, just wanted 2 say that Jay Rock was acc the first artist signed to TDE. Punch confirmed it in a video in the “Blueprint” interview series. Keep up the work 💯
Thanks for posting this. KDot is one of my favorite emcees of all time so this was very interesting to watch.
Great video. I’ve fallen in love with Kendrick’s music since hearing Good Kid Maad City (my favorite album of all time). Nice to learn more.
You hit every margin in Kendrick’s music and how it’s perfect about oneself over everyone else. Kendrick inspired me to take his vulnerability into words for the public to hear for an honest man and I’m gonna do it better in my way
What a great video you went in. thank you🙏🏽🙏🏽
Phil, this breakdown is amazing. Very thoughtful and climatic!! 🔥
Thank you!
Bro your thumbnails are always stunning ✨
Didn't think I'd see you here
Its amazing having you narrate his life like he does with his music.
dope video fam. Been my favorite artist most of my life. This video was great.
I'm a Executive Producer, and I must say, your vision throughout the Kendrick Lamar video, was TOTALLY on point. Keep up the great work. I would love to talk with you about my music productions and projects. Indeed you will get a percentage. Great work keep it up!!!
Sing about me im dying of thirst is one of my favorite songs as well, there is just so much effort and emotion put into one song, and I hate that no one ever talks about it or listens to it because it’s too long
You are one of my favorite channels. Period
going back to kedrick lamar 2009 EP and hearing him, man he had it on lock for soo damn long. crazy you didnt mention it with all the bangers back to back. which overly dedicated had some of them but remixes, that 2009 EP tho defiantly put him on the map IMO. Great video
Hands down one of my favorite videos on UA-cam!! I love you!!
I've had a pleasure to hear him live recently. The best executed concert of a raper I've witnessed to date.
Thank you for this video! It was both well researched and beautifully edited.
Great video. Appreciate it, powerful.
Just discovered this today and it was a pretty good breakdown, loved the visuals 👏🏾
GKMD + Good kid Madd D.O.G.G
With mr morale:
We all see what happened to Kanye.
I don't think Kanye ever had a savior complex, or if he did it's long gone by now
this was insanely interesting, thank you for making.
one of the best videos ive watched in a while
Matt Jeezy, the one that said don't die, he is a genuine, compassionate, loving and amazing musician too. For years he worked at the URM in LA, great with kids too. It doesn't surprise me that he was so supportive of Kendrick. Birds of a feather 🙏❤
Overly dedicated is insane and I think it is insanely underrated
So I wont say DAMN is a good album but it did what it had to do is give a wake up call to the world about his old music
Speaking if Mr.Morale his latest album I have been hearing it on a loop...
So shutting oneself away from all the outside stuff is the only way to grow sanely in this generation ❤️
Also, I like how he starts the song N95 with hello new world showing that he wants to warn the next generation not to get stuck in the cycle of addiction, drugs, clout chase etc.
This video is absolutely beautiful. As a Kendrick Lamar fan, I'm inspired.
Beautifully done, sir. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Already know this video is going to be amazing. Your analysis is so good

Where tf do I know “Atticus finch” from…
@@thestoneopera9027 it’s that lawyer/dad from To Kill A Mockingbird
One thing you might have forgotten to mention is how deeply he pours his feelings for the respective coming albums with his "The Heart" tracks... Parts I and II go so hard in my opinion...
Thank you for the video. I love Kendrick and since TuPac was murdered, Kendrick has been the only rapper I truly listen to, but after watching your video I feel I have a better understanding of his albums, the stories behind each is amazing. Definitely going to listen to Good Kid, Maad City all over again from a fresh perspective. Thanks 🙏🏿
What a solid video! I'm gonna have to subscribe. Well done!!!
God bless you all and sleep well ❤
Haven't commented in a long time on any UA-cam video.
Just letting u know I really appreciate the work and I really enjoyed watching this video.
I hope you know we appreciate all the work you put into these videos. You never miss.
It shouldnt be about being corny but rather the fact that its well versed and the artistry is Unmatched.
Expressing kendrick story in that way is a real art woooooooow 😍😍😍
Please 🙏🏾
It is the origin story of the black community..
Cole's nice and I love his music but Kendricks changed my life
Great video, thank you! It was mainly Kendrick who got me back into hip-hop after the mumble rap era... THANK YOU KENDRICK!!! GOAT
How are you not more popular? This was really well done 👏
On that note, and I speak as a fan…
Most of his music isn’t “music”,
it’s a character study; a conceptual mess meant to pick apart.
I disagree
I disagree
It can be both and it is
I agree
Thank you for this mucker!! 😉
