The intro made me finally realize how one of the "sound effect" bits on Modest Mouse's "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes" was made, so, thank you for that 😂
This comment made me remember what a banger that song is.
Love that song the intro totally sounds like it too
Reminds me of Convenient Parking
mm goes hard with harmonic whammy
@@refracted6349 so hard I feel like I'm ripping them off every time I try using harmonic whammy 😄
The great thing about Strat pickups is that you have SO MANY OPTIONS for whatever you want to put into this model.
Reporting from 2 hours in the future. They're $269.99 cause everyone gives 10% off Fender products :D
Love the jam at the start
Same!
Me too, used to play pipeline, walk don’t run and twilight zone back in the late 60,s brought back great memories of me and my friends playing and loving it.😊
@@rick00770 what song was he playing?
Yup outstanding, well done!
@@bluwngpretty sure he’s just jamming’ out.
13:11 that was certainly not enough of that. Don’t deny the joy the two Princetons jingle brings you!
I'd feel even more cheated if we didn't get an entire run through and about 50 plays in the previous video. But completely agree, Ryan cost himself a chuckle there.
I legit can't wait for the jaguar affinity modding episode
Ryan, you're COOKING on that opening Jam. That was some absolutely glorious music.
I've been watching lots of your videos lately and I have thought about the Affinity Jag a lot lately, so this video is the will of the universe
I bought one of these in Brown about month ago and I love it. I’ve been waiting for you to review this thing … just about what I expected 👍
Years ago I owned a no-name strap that had the same type of pickups in that jaguar. I actually liked the sound of them just because they were different sounding from my other strat pickups
Best Surfie intro !! May be buying one real soon……..
You can truly tell in this video, that you are living la vida surf rock.
$119 for a humbucker squier? I wouldn’t have been able to resist THAT! I wish I had known!
Hi Ryan, really enjoyed the review, you were like a kid in a sweet shop. The excitement was infectious. Strangely, I’ve been considering that guitar for the last couple of weeks, but I think you might have convinced me to buy the burst, but I’ll have to go and have a look at the brown, that looks good too. You are so excited I thought your face was gonna burst. You’re a great guy and I really enjoyed the videos, but I know I’ll never have a collection like yours. Many thanks, GARY in the UK that guitar is selling for about 250 sterling, I’ve even seen it at 2:38, absolute bargain.
Great surf gam. I loved that surf music back in the day. Reverb is the goat. You got me wanting a surf guitar. A jaguar or jazzmaster. 😊
I agree with your assessment. It exceeded my expectations for an Affinity level guitar and it's just FUN. I'd say it's cheap in all the right (easily replaceable) places and also perfectly usable as-is if that's all you need it to be.
I got the sparkle brown finish. I didn't like how pale the neck was (same complaint I have for a lot of recent Squiers), so I swapped in a CV neck for the amber tint, rosewood board, and blocks & binding which is more to my taste. But there wasn't anything wrong with the stock neck. Interestingly, the all-maple one also has a gloss headstock and matte everywhere else, including the fretboard.
I'd call the stock pickups 'punchy' and 'bright'. They're good for what they are and even though I was always planning to swap them out, I'll probably keep them in my parts bin- right next to the similarly cheap n' cheerful Squier Mini humbuckers- just in case I need a decent set of single coils for a project.
Overall, it's a decent guitar with lots of potential for modding that comes in some great finishes, which is all I wanted from the start. I figured I'd pay the same for a similar quality body alone, and it wouldn't come in sparkle brown!
I just dropped in a Göldo DG Tremolo and I have some way-too-nice Höfner style pickups by Mojo and The Creamery ready to go in once I get a new pickguard. I'm thinking Rickenbacker style gold or gold-perloid in a Jazzmaster style one-piece. It's a JagHöfMaster!
Yeah, I really like that sparkle brown. Really looks more like a handsome metallic bronze, and I usually am not a fan of brown. Dammit, now I have to get one😅.
@@randrothify One of us! One of us!
I got the classic vibe Jaguar on sale at GC last July $349. I like it.
I just bought a sunburst Sonic Mustang to modify to a C# alternative thing to beat up and I absolutely love it!
Intro jam is absolutely amazing!
Man, that intro jam is something else. Far out, for real
Looks and sounds like a boss garage rock machine, especially after that intro - pretty much sold me right there. I do love the poopy sparkle more though if it wasn't for the maple neck but I could get used to that too. Definitely want to try one in the flesh now
I bought the classic vibe ‘70s model and love it.
me and my band always check this guy out we love that he doesnt just stick to overpriced gear me i want that upgrade ability so guitars like these are must to check out so keep on doing the great work mate!
The opening tune you played is by far. My favorite of your performances. The only thing missing was the rest of the B52s dude! Please give us more.
Love the 'Jettes t-shirt! Those Canadiennes Rock!
Ryan, the shear joy you had during the entire video! Amazing! 😁
The intro jam reminds me a lot of "Out of limits" . . . Greetings!
My Affinity Jag mod check list:
Pickup swap, not sure what
4 way blade switch to get the series option.
Push-pull on the volume to add something similar the the rhythm circuit warmth
Push pull on tone to add the strangle circuit.
on the sunburst ---- throw a single coil size H with coil split in the back, and a select S in the rfront and put black covers on them --- use those cheap white things for a cigar box rig
Thank you for this video, I’ve been waiting on your opinion on this guitar! It’s brand new and there’s only like 4 videos on UA-cam. I think this secured my purchase but I’m going with the mystic brown with the maple neck.
You should have compared this one to the player II since they are the same looking guitar!
But thank you!
Think you helped sell a lot of these JAGS with the opener-- man that sounded killer
The Affinity impresses me. I'd upgrade the tuners and pickups and play the heck out of it.
I am with you about the burst, I do love me a good tri-colour burst, but I dislike the cheapy looking two colour ones.
I would be very excited if they would come out with a lefthanded version!!!!!!!!!!
@paulc519 there’s always one winging lefty. Sure thing Flanders 😢
We are hated.
Hello, I'm another whinging lefty.
Excellent rendition of Out of Limits at the top! Killer playing 🤙
thanks! its a hard song to loop over because the song structure really wanders around but this was a fun jammy compromise.
many many thanks friend
i have NEVER seen a nicer and funnier guitar review than this one
i was already planning to buy this little gem, and your review has convinced me 100%
for sure we have seen that you have had a lot of sincere fun with it, you have entertained yourself, us and interested us too
also, what a great surf player !!!
so, best congrats and kidest regards from Italy !!!
ciao
Roberto
ps... how many beers did it take ?
😂
Those pickups remind me of the pickups that came in the old Rogue ST-3 strats back in the early 2000s! They were same style metal baseplates with the bobbins just glued down with rubber cement to the baseplate. I took one apart to see what the construction was lol Coils were wound around a clear plastic insert that held the pole pieces in place and the ceramic magnet as well. The magnets were very thin and small to fit between the coil winds. Then two lead wires soldered to the coil wire lead ends. It was all then potted in wax. Some sounded decent some were really horrible lol I used buy a lot of those back in the day for friends wanting to mess around on guitars. They were like $80 locally at out music store back then. This thing sounds really good though compared to hose old Rogues!
The Squier Contemporary Jaguar can be had at this time for just a few dollars more, and comes with a tuneomatic, which I can't praise enough.
Nice axe, but for 300 bucks you can easily find a used Classic Vibe Jag with all the bells and whistles.
Sahweeeeet! Nice Playing!!
I'd love to see someone put lipstick pickups into an Affinity Jag. I bet it would instantly look sick.
delicious, for 299 its a seafoam spray of fun n' vibe..I want one- ill spring for tuners.....demos like this cost me plenty THX !
I'm into that Affinity. I also like the other color they have but not with the white guard.
Sounds so much like the sound on Takeshi Terauchi’s 1965 LP “Lets Go Eleki Bushi”
I’ll take that compliment!
nice intro ...ok it was killer hello from the VIRGIN ISLANDS
Enjoyed the review of 2 cool offsets. Maybe if enough UA-cam reviewers could give a quick mention to the lack of ANY offsets in left hand until American pro II, maybe Fender might hear it? Heck it's a long shot, but it might just work.
Out Of Limits doesn't get enough play. That sounds great.
I actually like the other color, Mystic Metallic Brown; reminds me of a late 60's Hot Wheels color.
I like it but prefer the rosewood fretboard.
Im obviously biased to classic vibe, its caged pickups, inlays, stangulation and lead rythmn for a bit more. You made it do a lot. I dont hate it, i wish they called it like a panther, cheetah, or Jag kitty?
Catchy opening jam (even with yourself!) is a page out of the Anderton's playbook, but it was catchy and great. Don't stop. The Surfrajettes T-shirt was just icing on the cake.
For a while in the last decade, for a Fender-style guitar, Affinity was the bare-minimum for "Okay and cheap" with the Bullet series being...questionable. The guitar market's goo-morph has been interesting. There are great-for-cheap guitars, and step ups in quality for a little more price (Epiphone's price AND quality hikes, for example). In this case, it's kind of a "not-jag", but still a great guitar.
Love the video!
Love the fast food metaphor! Right up my alley! 🍔🍔🍔
I'm shocked you didn't get the brown rootbeer sparkle one! That'd be my choice.
just wish it wasn't a maple neck. They should have swapped fingerboard options between the two
I love Carl's Jr., White Castle, and the "clinically clean" Squire Affinity.
I personally would have liked if this was titled "The ultimate JAG-off!"
The CV jag is a great guitar. Just love mine.
This is a very Ryan video. Yaaaasss!!!
Well dang … I kinda love those trashy pickups! Different sounds are a good thing!
Ryan, have you ever tried gently tightening the screw on the tuner buttons? If you're careful not to overtighten them you can do that to get rid of some of the slop in the tuners when you turn them.
ive done that on other guitars but not on this one yet. Ill give it a shot.
Great video, love the intro jam!
Sounds almost as good as my 1976 Sears and Roebuck
It's an Indian Laurel Fingerboard. They are ceramic pickups.
Well, the Affinity Jag is perfect if I wanna make my own budget Kurt Cobain Jaguar, with two humbuckers, and that's it, but I would like to put the rhythm circuit just for aesthetical purposes, and change the stock pickups switch for the KC one, although I also wanted to have the Squier jaguar contemporary...
I had to stop to comment on your opening jam, Ryan! It was great!!! You should release it as a single! Call it Ryan's Jag Jam! 🎸
Also, that sunburst is totally superior to my MIJ Jaguar's sunburst
That unit would appreciate the 80's treatment with a floyd rose and 1 humbucker. Coil split set up
NICE INTRO!!! Those pickups may be cheap but to me they sound good. If you want single coil grit get some Strat CuNiFe magnet pickups they have out. Sold as a full set. Those have a great sound with a little more umph. Wish I could afford to get them and the CuNiFe wide range to do a hss set.
The intro was like from the twilight zone. Why do I want this cheap guitar now?
If it came with humbuckers, this bass player would be saving his lunch money. I already have a squier strat. I kinda want a dual humbucker jag or tele.
Where I live, there is White Castle and Hardee’s instead of Carl’s Jr. White Castle is at least a level above Hardeee’s.
I like those tuners. They are not jumpy you just have to adjust the nut and tuning peg screws.
I just got a used classic vibe Jaguar for under 300 € last weekend. Looking at this review kinda reassured me since I love to have all the jag specific features and not just a few of them. Not hating on the Affinity but in my mind it’s closer to something like a Cyclone? Strat-Offset hybrid. Looks nice tho and I’m sure it will be a cool first offset for some aspiring surf punks hehe
If you are going to sit and play it at home it's wonderful. You may even get some gigs in with it but it's going to fail in some way soon if you are working it hard.
@@monmixer that’s a completely ignorant assumption.
Looks like a nice guitar! One thing I'm most keen to hear about with any guitar is the neck profile. How does it compare to the CV or even the VM Jag?
Feels like the same neck shape as the cv but with a different finish.
@@60CycleHumcast thanks Ryan!
While there isn't anything particularly wrong with the Affinity model, I think that the block inlays, the higher quality fret fitting, better tuners and more authentic electronics setup make the mark-up involved with the Classic Vibe worth while.
Ok it’s official I quit guitar…. That intro jam was so good! Wait… Maybe my problem is I don’t have a Jaguar 😂
I like the angled switch on this vs. the horizontal switch on the Player ll Jag
The Affinity Jaguar is $599.00 in Australia
Big fan of your channel and just subscribed. Let me ask you: do you think the Squier Telecaster Bullet could do a vintage sound riff like Roy Orbinson's Pretty Woman or Pixies' Here comes your man? Thanks for the attention.
You can never have too many Jags!😄
For $300, I expect some kind of alnico pickups and a legit finish on the neck. This guitar looks more like $180 territory.
same, a little disappointed by the pickup choice. doesn’t even allow you to put jag pickups into it if you wanted to. glad they at least put the CV hardware instead of a Strat bridge, but idk, for an extra ~$120 I’d rather get the CV any day.
Killer intro Ryan!
Man, those pickups are a perfect mix between strat style and jag style pickup. I expected a regular strat pickup. What I'd do for a mod is to put the stock pickup in humbucker setup(side by side) and put both in the bridge pickup area. I think they could squeeze in.
Agreed, like the strat vibe without being one is nice and can’t really knock the cheap pickups even with that temptation to mod it.
Both those Squiers have Indian Laurel fretboards, not rosewood. I might opt for the Root Beer Brown model just to get a 24" maple fingerboard.
I forgot to mention, when my ESP LTD Viper 260 got ripped off, i was walking and saw my good friend Tye, and he has this strat copy, a guy was wanting drugs and said hed trade for like 10$ (these are houseless addicts he was likely unable to find anyone who wanted one more thing to carry) i told him id give him 25$ the next day, and just swing by, we used to use together before i gave up all hard drugs so he knew where i lived, but unfortunately, he ended up in the morgue before he made it to my apartment, So while i know female names are the norm, this one is called "Dead Guy Tye". He was a good friend, wouldnt steal from people like most addicts, its the shittty guityar but in the 90s you never knew a lemon from a rare jem, so please advise on the JM i want it unique snd solid, like my friend was
I won't be a Richard because my name is Thomas. Haha
It is perfect. I play a style with a blend of Prog/Hardrock and Metal. I have 66 pedals on my board. The right OD & or Fuzz thru my Marshall and you will never know what guitar I am playing, lol.
Oh my: In your comparisons, the Affinity's pickups actually sounded richer than the Classic Vibe's. That's a surprise! How much worse is their hum without the claw? BTW, a great no-routing substitute for the "rhythm circuit" is to just wire in a series/parallel push-pull for the 2 pickups. This way, you get a bassy, bluesy tone that defaults to LOUDER than the standard circuit, rather than being capped at
Intro jam!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽👍🏽 🔥🔥🔥
It'd be nice to see you do another mod/ art project guitar!
Like that guitar. Looks great. Looks like a fun guitar. 😊
I just love fender
Affinities are just nogo for me because of the shallow bodies. I like to mod and the extra depth of cavities in a full sized body is necessary for my janky wiring and switches.
Good news. This one has a full depth body.
I love when you play guitar:) Nice one 👍
Great playing, and that guitar tone beats a lot of other guitar tones IMHO.
Very cool review Ryan ! How did you know I was thinking of buying a Squier Jaguar ?
Finally someone who's reviewing the sunburst! Thanks Ryan!
Does the routing accept p90's? Because I think a blacktop jaguar p90 pickguard would be a perfect mod!!
I'd pick the CV for the block inlays alone!
Now why would you do this to me? I love the uniquirkiness of the build and the sound. It was your playing, that sold me on a guitar I never had an interest in before. Now I want a Jaguar. That Jaguar. As is, uniquirkly as it is. I just bought four other guitars, so I may miss this opportunity in Amazon. You can be a cruel man. By the way, the fast food establishment that goes with this guitar is “Jet Burger”. But the name has to be diagonal.
I want one of these to put EMG mavericks in or take advantage of the switch space to introduce a 5 way switch with some series parallel options
Man, that affinity really shows even cheap pickups through an amazing amp (Or amps in this case) will go a long way to vastly improving the tone of a cheap guitar.
