philbestmusic.com/ Phil Best highlights the things he's most excited about in this latest incarnation of Modartt's physical modelling software, Pianoteq.
I agree 7.5 is a good update. Sampled VSTs hardly ever update anything...take your money and run kind of feeling....Moddart is always refining...which I appreciate!
Phil, truly enjoy all of your videos. You have a wonderful touch and expressiveness in your playing. In a side by side comparison I heard of Pianoteq 6 & 7, Pianoteq 7 definitely has a more open sound with more life. Pianoteq 6 seems to have a more closed digital quality. I am still hoping that Pianoteq will come to the IOS platform.
I had de same feeling more or less, i updated pianoteq 7.5 with no expectation because it is not a major update (in theory), but i had an instant feeling of wow this feels amazing, almost like a new instrument, very little changes but right on spot.
If anyone had told me I would be bringing in the New Year with a collection of piano's so magnificent, and placed in perfect room's so resonant, that I wouldn't trade any other piano or room in the world for them...I would, of course, have laughed this off as insanely unthinkable. Well, thanks to the guidance and demonstrations from Phil Best, I now have this priceless collection, with a great piano recording studio to boot, for less than it would cost to move a valueless old console piano to my apartment from across town and tune it once! I always hated playing the piano with headphones because all the digital pianos I tried sounded so lifeless...Now, my only problem is that my Pianoteq collection of pianos all sound so lifelike through my open air headphones. I am at times struck with fear that I must have left my monitor speakers on and I am sure my neighbors are about to kill me thinking I have moved a real Steinway grand into my apartment and am playing at concert level with full abandon. Just to be clear, I have no connection with Phil, nor with Pianoteq. I am writing this because I do have a profound appreciation for the skills they both have and for the joy their work brings me. I also write this in hopes of helping to inspire others to find their way to exporing what joy might await them in playing these pianos and listening to Phil Best Music.
@@PhilBestMusic Hi Phil, love your video's (and Pianoteq by the way). Question, could you do a video about your studio? Or is there one already, couldn't find it. What is that big piano you're playing on for instance?
@@PhilBestMusic This is something to look forward to...I am especially interested in the headphones you choose to best represent your Pianoteq pianos.
OMG!!! I've had this program since version 'one'... and it is a quantum leap beyond that now!! What you say about presence and fullness... rolls right into the 'expressiveness' I can hear as you play it!! In the earlier days (even back to V.1), Pianoteq was very good... but I remember it being more bell-like than it is today. These days, I'm hearing a darned PIANO, and honestly... I'm amazed to the point of almost being freaked out. LOL!! This V7.5 is going to cause me to retire a few of my sample libraries... the expressivity is key with me. I was trained on oboe, and I just fake piano playing. Still, I can play well enough... to feel the potential of the instrument to be expressive and musical. This Pianoteq 7.5 sounds SO GOOD!!! 🙂
It responds to a free, rhythmic way of playing. That's the most important thing - the source of expressiveness is how we can attack and flow from the body with meaning/feeling. Samples just don't seem to respond to this for me.
@@PhilBestMusic Well said!! One can dig deeper (expression-wise) with Pianoteq, and that's something I noticed many years ago. That's very important for me.
Damn, I wasn’t ready when you hit the keys at 2:17 (listening thru headphones and you were in my pocket). INSTANTLY understood what you were saying tho lol
i haven't upgraded to pianoteq 7 yet, but this sounds wonderful. i agree that modartt keeps raising the bar in the digital piano space, and having someone with the musical credentials of phil best in their corner speaks volumes. like the jordan rudesses of the world, he is no cheap shill. well done!
This update is absolutely amazing. Thank you for your demonstration and beautiful playing Phil. I just wish I could get my Yamaha P515 to interact with Pianoteq like you are able to with the Roland piano. Keep posting your marvelous videos, Thank you, Warmest regards, Chris (sigasa)
We don't need to record Pianoteq using a mic. It's done internally. But personally when I play using Pianoteq, I use a pair of M Audio BX 8 speakers which are behind the piano, not the ones on the back wall - they'd be in the wrong place. I prefer the BX8s to the piano speakers.
These are some impressive updates. If PianoTeq can reduce the nasal quality present from regions around middle C to F2 or thereabout, I think I will be a potential user. But now as things stand, I'm still watching PianoTeq.
I'll have to update. I combine a Pianoteq voice with the voice from a Yamaha DGX-670. The end result is quite nice. What speakers do you use with your piano? Or is it direct line out? What you played sounds very rich. Warmth is important. Electronic piano voices can be harsh. In ice hockey some people have a very powerful "wrist shot." A wrist shot is different from a slap shot where you wind up and take a big swing.
Thank you for the video . You play very well and I also like pianoteq 7.5 a lot . It is definitely one of the top VST . I was wondering if you have tried Garritan CFX ? I m actually stunned by the playability of this VST . In my opinion, it surpasses pianoteq when it comes to trills , repeated notes and fast runs , I have used most of the known VST ( except Ravencroft) but Garritan CFX is exceptional in 2 departments : playability and reverb . I haven’t seen any VST who does it better . The 2 VST that could me goosebumps when I play are pianoteq and Garritan CFX . Recently I used Garritan CFX more , as I ended up having pain in both hands with pianoteq , I can’t explain why , but I suspect it’s due to trying to compensate the software limitations in some technical fast runs . I started to experiments pain symptoms when I used pianoteq 7,5 extensively ,and the pain disappeared when I reverted back to Garritan . I must add that I played piano for more than 20 years , so it’s not a beginner issue. I would be very interested to have your advised opinion on the matter . Cheers
Thanks! I'm sure Garritan CFX is great but I'm very happy using Pianoteq - I've always found sampling lacks a certain responsiveness that physical modelling has.
Hi Phil - great review, very informative, very „human“ and that is what is all about, no? So far, I liked my D-274 Steinway from VSL best. My chain consists of a new Mac Book Pro, a Universal Audio Twin X Thunderbolt Audio Interface which is feeding a hi end HiFi Stereo Chain (no studio monitors because they are by their „linearity“ requirements often cold and uninspiring). The VSL Steinway lies on an external pci SSD, also connected via TB 3 to the Mac. As a MIDI Controller I have been using a Yamaha CP88 but I am about to buy a new controller as this part of the whole chain is key, obviously when it comes to the experience as a player. I am convinced that the controller must first be sort of „optimized“ for transmitting a maximum of high definition data (MIDI 2.0?) to sound naturally. Second of course it must have the best possible key action, as close as possible to a real grand. I thought about buying a Yamaha NX1 but then I was hesitating again to buy lots of (unused) internal speakers and an instrument not being optimized to transmit third party MIDI data, be it from Pianoteq (which after your review I will definitely consider) or VSL. Maybe a Kawai VPC1 or a Roland A88 MK II (MIDI 2.0) or a Lachnit MK 23 (have you heard about this small Austrian Company?) would be perfect to complete my chain. What are your preferred Controllers? How can a consumer know about the MIDI capabilities of instruments like the NX1 or NV10S or others? And, does it matter anyway? I am convinced that „the perfect digital chain“ with todays technology available outperforms every acoustic instrument in non perfect acoustic environments. (Who has a concert hall at home to make a real D-274 really shine?) I wonder what you think about these thoughts …
Hi Matthias, Thanks for your kind comments! Much appreciated. Sorry to disappoint with my reply but I'm a musician and teacher, not a gear reviewer. So I just talk about what I use myself and enthuse about it a lot when I love it as much as I do Pianoteq. And I haven't tried all the keyboards or software pianos out there (there are so many of them). I just have loads of fun with the Roland PHA50 action (HP605 in this video) which feels like a Steinway to me. And I just adore Pianoteq. Once I find what I like this much, I stop exploring much. I really love the variety of pianos I have in my Pianoteq Studio Bundle. And I enjoy the sound of my M-Audio BX8s - clear and deep!
I love Pianoteq and I love all your videos about it... I can see you are using IEM (witch one ?), is there a big difference with headphones ? (I use open HD540) And do you use binaural setting in this case ? What is minimum price for IEM good for pianoteq ? Thank you...
All the main pianos had improvements - for me the Ant. Petrof and Blüthner had the most improvement. Even the Kremsegg C. Bechstein sounds even better in 7.5.2 as well.
if i had to chose one acoustic piano that could be the most versatile, which one would it be? i will probably chose the Rhodes emulation as my second choice for the Stage version. edit: i think i might go for the Bechstein.
Did you struggle to refine your velocity curve for your controller/touch... and do you muck about with it still? Or was it easy-going and you leave it alone now?
I'm very happy with the velocity default setting but I do like the way different curves can mimic how different pianos respond in the real world. As long as its not too crazy, I can happily play with almost any velocity curve.
Phil, how would you compare Pteq 8 to the native Roland modeled sound of your HP piano? Do you have a preference? And, can pianoteq be used on an external drive so it can be hooked to different laptops?
I much prefer Pianoteq's pianos to the ones inside my my Roland HP605! They are richer and more immersive. Roland ones are good though... Pianoteq is small after installation so a portable installation isn't necessary.
Purely subjective taste but if I had to choose only 4 pianos, it would be the Steinway D, Bluethner, Bechstein and probably actually the U4 (not a grand but I like it).
After getting Pianoteq 5 I realised I wasted my money on the sampled libraries and other piano plugs. I can run 6.x on a 2009 win 7 32bit PC and it doesn't miss a trick. Same with 7.x on the 2012 Mac Mini. 48k through the Sonar VS700R into amped monitors with a GHA keybed and I'm in the Steinway selection room.!!!!!! I rarely use any other libraries anymore.

Darn it Phil. You didn't say which pianos you were playing :D (silly me, I literally started jumping around trying to find it (if you did say it somewhere, I apologize, but I came to hear an update of your last video where you play a whole set of different Pianoteq Pianos - I always come to your page before I buy one of their piano expansions, which I know is not the purpose of this video but... ) :D
I honestly don't understand all the hype about this. It's quite impressive what they've done, considering it's entirely modeled rather than relying on samples. But I've tried the demo, and tried the various tweaks people recommended, and it's not nearly as real-sounding, responsive, or musically satisfying as the sounds built into my Roland FP-30. Maybe this is like comparing apples and oranges. I don't know-I'm not a programmer or an electronics technician, just a musician. Really, though, there's no comparison, in my experience.
Well these things are subjective and you're entitled to your opinion. I'm just sharing my honest feelings (and music) - no hype! I'm a musician and teacher not a reviewer and I don't work for Modartt. Personally, I love Pianoteq - it feels great to play - much nicer than an FP30!

You must be using an advance copy of 7.6, because when I play 7.5 it doesn't sound anywhere near as good as you! ;)
