      That's physical modelling for you!! ...... however, you do therefore need to be very conscious of CPU overhead to ensure your PC/Mac set-up can crunch the numbers hyper fast on the fly, though most modern computer DAW stations will eat this still for breakfast 😀 👍🎹🎵🎶💥🍻

    Great playing as usual. I'm running pianoteq on my old iPhone 7 as dedicated keyboard module. Along with Ravenscroft. It's amazing how these devices can handle these virtual instruments with ease. Latency is probably about 8ms, give or take. It's almost non-existent. Such joy to play.

    I'm a guitar player and I had to focus to hear the differences between the classical guitar sound and what an actual classical guitar sounds like. That's remarkable. You can still hear differences, especially when you were just playing single note melodies, but I would not notice that this was a VST of a classical guitar if I'd just heard it on the radio or something. Wow! Beautiful playing and great demo, too.

    With Pianoteq you can still hear the "digital" whistling resonance on some of the notes. It has been the major hallmark of digital modelling of pianos.

    I've been running pianoteq on an ODROID N2+ single board computer since last summer and I use an android tablet with VNC to change pianoteq parameters via WIFI. Even though these single boad computers are pretty inexpensive and small, Pianoteq 8 (as well as 7) runs on it like a charm. I'll have to admit that I find some controls (like the condition slider) difficult to manipulate on the tablet because it's displayed near the bottom where the tablet OS reacts to swipes and clicks by displaying OS related stuff.

    With the mikes close(-ish) this VST got something no other VST has.
    I can't explain it other than it sounds like it's real strings reacting to eachother on longer notes..
    Heard your IOS demo and I think I will never use the 3.5 mm output again :D
    The noise... but also the piano itself sounded sharp and edgy (even I enjoyed your amazing demo skills as always of course) :D

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Рік тому +1

      Emanuele, I make it a practice never to add any additional EQ, compression or other plugins that might change the sound of the virtual instrument that I am showcasing. When I do add anything, I always try and make a point to let everyone know, this is especially true when adding reverb or granular types of effects for special sound design or experimenting with things.
      The main issue with getting the right sound is working with your keyboard's velocity scaling. try adjusting the curves and see how it affects the sound. I would go to the extreme ends first to see how things respond and then you can dial things in a little more from there.

      I was not completely sold on Pianoteq totally replacing conventional sample libraries, UNTIL v8. This version really has me looking deeper into this as they really did such a great job refining things. The future looks even more interesting than ever. Thanks so much for watching. Joyfully!🎹

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Рік тому +2

      A quick followup. So Keyscape and NOIRE have their unique character about them. Noire is like a set of musical colors on an artist’s palette where you can venture into some very beautiful places. Keyscape was produced so well from the perspective of a recording engineer where you can drop the pianos into a mix and they fit right in.
      Both of these instances take advantage of what I call the acoustic “X” factor. It is the physical space these instruments occupy that add a dimension that is not necessarily heard but felt. Pianoteq approaches what could be considered an “uncanny valley” of sorts where it is on the threshold and your brain is taking all of the input it is getting from the ears and trying to piece together exactly what might be going on.
      All of that to say, things are very exciting and I don’t expect them to slow down any time soon. 🤓

    I’m seriously impressed with how far Pianoteq has come over the years! I’ve been using NI Noire and Embertones Walker Concert D as my main goto pianos but after trying Pianoteq 8, this could potentially become my goto.
    I love how Pianoteq 8 sounds and feels to play and the additional instruments packs also sound great! To think this is capable from a 48mb file is simply astonishing!
    I have been close to buying Production Voices 300 Grand but am now torn between this and Pianoteq 8.
    What are your thoughts on Pianoteq 8 vs Production Voices 300 Grand?

    • @andy-simmons
      @andy-simmons Рік тому +1

      I’m right there with you. I usually gravitate toward the Walker D or Noire, occasionally Keyscape. Personally I think 8 really closed the gap on timbre enough to make it my new favorite, and it’s just so playable. Also, using v8 as an effect really adds life to old sample libs like the Keyscape C7 by adding responsive string resonance.

    • @richardpenrose1968
      @richardpenrose1968 Рік тому +2

      @@andy-simmons Yes I agree, I also think the sound of v8 has closed the gap enough to possibly become my new favourite aswell! Pianoteq 8 is also by far the nicest to play.
      The other library that has impressed me from the various audio demos and reviews online is the Production Voices 300 Grand. I have been tempted to buy this one as from what I’ve heard so far I prefer it to both Noire and Embertones Walker Concert D. However, I’m now torn between this or picking up a few Pianoteq Add-ons. Whilst the Production Voices 300 Grand sounds very impressive, I feel like I will be getting more for my money with the Pianoteq Add-ons as with every update all the pianos keep on getting better! If v8 already sounds and plays this good then just imagine how good they could be by v9! Also, there will be an iOS version around Spring next year. My Yamaha CP88 stage piano has a built in audio interface so I could easily use Pianoteq live.
      I think I’m leaning towards investing more into the Pianoteq ecosystem.

      @@richardpenrose1968 I may have to take another look at the PV300! We seem to have very similar taste… I also have the CP88 and have been really happy with it.
      This may or may not be relevant to your current situation, but I just contacted Modartt and requested a custom quote to upgrade from pro to the Studio bundle, and it was too good for me to pass up. Granted it was also during their current sale, so that may be part of it.

    • @richardpenrose1968
      @richardpenrose1968 Рік тому +1

      @@LINofficiel Well it’s still kinda early days but I think I prefer Pianoteq 8 with the Steinway D addons on a couple of new jazz projects I’ve just started over my sample libraries. I also bought the Steinway B and Upright addons in the current sale.
      I also like the sound of the Production Voices 300 Grand in the various online demos and have a feeling I would also prefer this over my existing sample libraries but I’m not sure I want to buy another large sample library. I think investing into the Pianoteq ecosystem makes more sense for myself. The main V.xx updates happen around every 2 years and only cost $29. During that period, they update all the pianos and most of the other sounds and add new features which is a complete bargain! There's also going to be an iOS version which I'm planning to get to use with my CP88. In my opinion this offers great value for money compared to many of the large sample libraries.

    • @PraiseTracks
      @PraiseTracks  Рік тому +1

      Since Pianoteq does not use samples there is more of an interaction. In the strings similar to an acoustic piano.
      There is a specific sound to Pianoteq because it is modeled.
      The VSL pianos have a tremendous amount of expression but since they are very complex samples instruments you might run into some performance issues as CPU and SSD access.
      It would be interesting to put the VSL and Pianoteq pianos side by side and see what happens.
      You can also download the Pianoteq demo to get a first hand listening experience. There are some limitations but possibly enough there to allow you to hear them in your workspace.

      Indeed this is a very valid point. I have noticed that the problem is not that much the CPU usage but how the software reacts when the core Pianoteq process is interrupted by another program generating a spike of CPU. I have noticed that you can hear crakles on a mac book if you play and scroll a score in preview at the same time. I have tried to tweak all parameters without success yet. If pianoteq runs on its own , it is very smoooth, but I know that users have reported that Preview application is a CPU killer , so I am looking for other way of bringing the score without pb.

    Comparing the pianos with Vienna Symphonic Syncron and The Garritan Piano Vsts there is no comparison , PianoTeq is not in their league . However, for live performance because of the small footprint this would be a great option. Where I found Pianoteq to somewhat lack is for Classical Piano , which is why I use Vienna and Garitan in the first place. All other styes of music it is a great option. I will admit the modeling really is impressive. All the other instruments included are fantastic. I would definitely recommend this VST.

    As of May 4, 2023 the full version of Pianoteq 8 has finally come to IOS. I sent an email to Modartt several years ago requesting an IOS version. I guess enough other musicians have done the same. This is wonderful news! Because this is the full, and not abbreviated version, it carries the same price as PC/Mac version. I have been checking out the demos since version 1. That was a long time ago. And, this is a program that has truly shown improvement in every updated version. This is a piano emulation, now at version 8, that really has no peer. This piano responds to your touch in the same way an acoustic piano does. It has no pre recorded samples. Although the Stage, Standard and Pro versions have the same presets, with the Standard and Pro versions you can customize many parameters of any of the pianos to be the exact Steinway, Bechstein or whatever piano that you wish.

    I never liked the sound of pianoteq. I simply thought it just never sounded acceptable.
    Last week I installed pianoteq 8, just to try, and to my surprise I was enjoying it. I could now, apparently, for the first time with pianoteq, "feel" and enjoy the music I was playing.
    Now, I'm a big vsl fan... so I did some back and forth comparising, and this made me come to the conclusion I still don't need pianoteq... but, that said... I think Pianoteq really made good progress here, since this was my first positive experience with it.
    I think this program is going the right way. Of course the playability was always top notch, so that's great.
    Is it good enough for me to buy? No, I have enough piano's that are, in my opinion, simply better, but if pianoteq continues improving, I think I just might be a customer in the future.
    If I have one complaint, it would be that to me, all the different piano's sound like different presets of the same piano. They don't really sound like different piano's, like acoustic and sampled piano's do.
    While I think it still doesn't sound like the piano's it's supposed to represent, if I approach Pianoteq as the instrument "pianoteq" itself, In that way I find it quite enjoyable, with it's great playability, it's different presets, and now acceptable sound. ☺️

    Pianoteq is coming to iOS. An iPhone 11 with A13 Bionic SoC is more than capable enough to run Pianoteq 8. For iPad to run Pianoteq 8, many iPad models will be supported, like iPad 9th gen, iPad 10th gen, iPad mini 6th gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPad Air 5th gen, and iPad Pro 2018, iPad Pro 2020, iPad Pro 2021, iPad Pro 2022. Modartt said the A13 Bionic SoC is more than capable, so I won’t be surprised if also the A12 Bionic (iPhone Xs, iPad mini 5, iPad Air 3) and the A11 Bionic (iPhone 8, iPhone X) will be supported. Hey Simeon,
    Something you said in your review of Pianoteq bothered me. There HAS to be sample files for the VST somewhere, the package is more than just the exe file. How would it handle the additional content otherwise? Plus the samples have to take up much more space than even the most compressed EXE file contains. I've been a Windows user and beta tester for many years so I have a pretty good idea of what is going on inside Windows. Please check these folders on your computer and I'll bet you find the sample files it is using:
    %appdata% (may need to dig through multiple layers)
    VST folder (C:\program files\VST Plugins on my Windows 10 computer. YMMV.)
    My Documents (The wrong place to put them for a variety of reasons, but some vendors still do).
    C:\ProgramData (also the wrong place to put them IMHO).
    I could listen to you play all day! One year ago I was in the hospital for an 8-day stay battling Covid19. I don't know how many of your videos I saw during that time, but it was a LOT. When I finally got home the first thing I did was purchase Solid State Symphony after watching you play it and I have used it on many tracks. :)

      I'm not an expert in tech, so I don't know what files an exe needs in order to function, but I do know that Pianoteq does not use sample files of recorded sound. I think this is the main idea that Simeon wanted to convey. Yes there is data about each piano, the size, the materials, and the physical properties of those materials. But the sound is created by an algorithm using a physical model every time a note is pressed. Its kind of like a really advanced synthesizer that is designed to replicate the sound of an acoustic piano.

    • @ChristianJoannes
      @ChristianJoannes Рік тому +2

      hello, no there is no sample at all. The various instruments and presets audio are built real time with different mathematical models. In a nutshell, a preset of a given instrument uses the core mathematical model for that instruments with adjusted parameters , a different instrument sound is built using different model. So the ~50 MB size is just the size required to contain core models. The parameters for each presets ( nksf files ) are stored in the libraries but are just like text files with parameter values ( on mac OS it is stored on library/Moddart/Pianoteq 8) . In fact , technically speaking the application requires 2x 50 MB 50 MB for the standalone application and 50 MB for the plugin when you select pianoteq as an instrument in your preferred DAW ( logic pro, pro tools or others) Hope it helps . @Simeon, thks for the nice video as always.
