Appreciate this one. I love technology, and sometimes hate it as well (been in IT industry for decades). One of the tough challenges I find is balancing between privacy, using only local devices (not reliant on a third party that might close tomorrow and leave bricked devices), and affordability. Trying to find that sweet spot ends up making it an unpaid, part-time job if I'm not careful.

Thank you - I have been talking to a lot of people lately who have smart gadgets (some unmanaged), would love to do more with them, but have a genuine fear with what it all means from a security perspective, and how much work it will take! - Thanks for watching!

You left out COST. I keep seeing and reading Automation steps to save money and energy, while completely disregarding the component cost, and eventual replacement life.
Now I’m all for things that can turn off the HVAC if your patio door is open, or ceiling fan automations that have sizable energy saving by stirring up the air. But tons of people are dumbing down multistage and variable HVAC equipment, especially heatpumps with aftermarket thermostats which don’t communicate properly for efficiency like Ecobee and Nest. Or spending a fortune to install a smart switch to immediately turn off the LED lights when someone leaves the room. You don’t need a home hub and a smart switch or bulb just to automate a laundry room light for motion.
I love my smart tech, and we have invested in quite a few items. But not everying needs to be controlled by a circuit board with wireless communication protocol.

I totally agree with you, and COST could make an interesting video all on its own. I am in this for the hobby first, but a close second is efficiency and cost savings - I have often wondered how much extra electricity all the smarts in my home actually use, vs any savings. Would be interesting to look into more. Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
