Maybe the church needs to ask itself why it isn’t appealing to people anymore. Having people like the Archbishop of Canterbury using his position to push lefty politics isn’t going to help.

We live in a post-Christian era, Ann - be realistic. In the past, I have had to deal with grossly incompetent vicars who were living in cloud cuckoo land, namely male vicars playing with choirboys in inappropriate manners. The Church of England should bow its head in shame for appalling conduct and ask on forgiveness from God rather than being cocky arrogant perverts.
The problem with Christianity in Britain, as with here in America, is the churches are growing 'woke'. The churches here which are not 'woke' are either holding firm or even growing.
From everything I gathered looking at this I think you got it the wrong way round. Churches exist within the society, they draw from and try to reach the people who are more secular/liberal/woke. Most people polled under 30 do not see the need for the church, the church becoming woke is their last Hail Mary before they become extinct.

Christian values were attacked when commercial interests abolished Sunday - i.e. Sunday was once a day which for church and family but it has become a day of shops open and everyone going shopping instead of spending value time with family. Christianity is too demanding of our shopping time. (Big Business once again).

Yep. You can't have a church that supports unbiblical practices like same sex marriages, abortions, and spends more of its time promoting social justice and green politics than The Word (John 1) and it work out well. Those churches almost always die over time.
And it's no surprise with the Church of England either, particularly when you read that Archbishop Justin Welby has said that he doubts God's existence due to the human suffering in the world. That ambiguous atheism and lack of understanding about suffering and Original Sin demonstrates he is biblically illiterate and clueless about the Book of Genesis (Chapter 3).

Ann Widdicombe makes a good point however the Word of God has told us for the past 2000+ years that the period before Christs return will see a great falling away from the truth of the Gospel, that people will turn from the truth and seek out what they want to hear instead of following Christ and obeying his teachings. Doesn’t matter what other religions do or say, they are all false anyway according to the Bible. God always has a remnant in the land. 2022 is no different. There are MANY true believers in the land who are not CofE or Catholic but the media always overlooks them.
Devonbiker I agree, lots of the big religious groups have been spouting false doctrine for centuries, it is up to the individual to seek truth, believing Jesus' own words, rather than the interpretations of some clergyman. I'm a Muslim and encourage Christians to become better Christians as it's better for society. All ancient religions teach treating each other like brothers and sisters, being neighbourly etc, which sounds like obvious behaviour but it's not what happens when nihilism takes over, which is why London is suffering from a loneliness epidemic. In case it's confusing for some why Muslims encourage Christianity, its because we are told in the Quran that told that all people in all times were given guidance by God and Christianity was true at its source and so has many good teachings in it. Jesus is mentioned, as a great Prophet of God, in the Quran more times than Muhammad, peace be upon them both. Mary, Jesus' mother, even has a Chapter named after her in the Quran. In fact more Muslims are named Jesus (Issa in Arabic, Jesus is not original name in Hebrew) then Christians. Christians in the middle east, where Jesus comes from, know all these facts, despite what you might hear in the decisive MMS.
You should become Christian and lead the way.

I am one of those nuisances Anne. Been preaching the gospel for forty years ..to all and sundry. Raised as an Anglican, but the CoE is dying before our eyes. Find a church filled to the brim with Africans and ask them to pray for you.

Firstly I have a great admiration for the Evangelicals in particular Christian Concern I myself am Roman Catholic and have been a member of the Legion of Mary, an Irish lay organization founded 100 years ago by Frank Duff in Dublin If you wish to take your Catholic faith seriously and help others along the way then becoming a member will make it easier to do this I recommend it
Christian Concern are a great bunch of protestants who have done so much for Catholics persecuted by secular and church authorities. The Catholic church will not be renewed by a leadership down approach but by the laity themselves. There are a sizeable number of lay Catholics who by the power of the Spirit are winning many souls to Christ through groups such as Cor Lumen Christi, Latin Mass Society, Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, Youth 2000. Jesus is Lord!

As a kid. On a Sunday, Churches and Sunday School were one of the few things open. Alot of people went cos everything else was shut on a sunday maybe.

I'm not British, but as it appears that you are not one, you should join your fellow Christians. Consider going to church someday, and turn to God. What can it hurt you to try: if you happen to be an atheist and are confident that God doesn't exist, you have nothing to lose given you do not believe you have an eternal soul.
Look at it this way: Christianity is the most democratic religion to have ever existed.

I had to move from the UK all the way over to the Pacific West coast to meet the Lord Jesus.

As an RC in my youth and long time ago l recall missionary priests visiting our church to say mass. They were blood and thunder fundamentalists. The church was full to the gunnels out into the street with the faithful waiting for the apocalyptic pulpit sermons

Strange though that while Christianity diminishes in the west, it flourishes elsewhere. The fastest growing church on earth at present is in Iran. Other countries in the Middle East, Africa are Asia are also flourishing. By 2050 China will have the largest number of Christians numerically.

There are no half hearted Christians in such countries. In the west we have total freedom to worship, but the church is dying.
Been to St. Mary’s in Nottingham recently and it’s almost empty. One church near it has been converted to a pub, can you believe that?

The problem is not a lack of “lay enthusiasm.” The problem is church leadership - bishops, priests deacons and religious who led the “auto demolition of the church” through the heresies of Modernism. You can’t build the “roof” of evangelism on a vandalized foundation of faith.

My sons neighbour is a retired vicar. Before he moved him, new kitchen, windows, boiler, garden landscaped. This house was stop notch modern and up to date. It was sick to see it pulled apart. The church owns it worth about 400k.

Rules to live by, should come from all sides: school, parents and church, in some cases, interdenominational, but not from parents and church/ chapel/synagogue/etc. There is little as sad as an adult saying he/she was given no reilgious grounding, presumably because the parents just wanted to sleep in on Sundays.

Our church has a steady trickle of newcomers, mostly thoughtful young people. Most of the congregation are adult converts and their young children, against the opposition of their atheist parents. There is a lesson here, somewhere.
That's interesting, it might be that parents, institutions, authorities and society in general in the west is against Christianity these days, therefore It might seem sorta rebellious for young people to take Christianity up. The older converts might be realising the madness that's going on around us and try to seek meaning in their life. A person with a why can suffer any how!
How can she proclaim to be Christian but think that other religions came before Christianity other than Judaism?

The Church of England has became detached from the English people since Justin Welby became Archbishop of Canterbury. He has no leadership skills, he is a mouse of a man. What was he doing during covid? Ive seen him twice in 3 years come out in public. Once to condemn the Rwanda deal and once to say we should forgive Peince Andrew. The church doesn't need a Justin Welby, it needs a John Wesley.
