- A lack of original ideas and shameless pandering to marketing result in this oh-so-infamous gem of a film. Is it so bad it'll make Piccolo rip his own ears off? Is there something really "Sluggish" about it? Or does it actually have some legitimate merits?

I actually forgot that the TFS interpretation of him was completely made up and was surprised when I found out that he wasn't the evil half of the Great Elder but some mutated namekian. I guess it just goes to show how devoid of substance the Z movies are when you remember more plot points than there actually are.
Well of course piccolo has no problem with the sun.

It's amusing also that Namek has three suns and no night. When you think of that, a Namek hating the sun is like a fish hating water.

You guys know that Slug was outside before they block out the sun. I have no idea where he got that idea from cuz it wasn't from the movie.
Honestly preferred the TFS take that he was the split half of Guru, the good half of course ;)
It's sad when a parody has superior narratives and backstory. That idea is a great one that the writers of this movie missed somehow.

@@leonardofarias8843: Slug is a runt compared to Guru, because Guru was so horrifically evil that what little of him that could be considered good doesn't amount to much. It's also why despite being the ostensibly "good" half, Slug is still a villain.

I think the reason why Slug gets particularly criticised for being uncreative is because the villain is the thing that's especially derivative, not the plot. In these films, you're almost expecting the plot to be derivative in some way, so the villain is the one big drawing point that makes it unique and worth watching. Dr. Uiro isn't anything like Vegeta. If Cooler is anything like Freeza, it's at least justified and actually discussed in the film. Cooler shows he's like Freeza and also shows he's better than Freeza because he's related to him. Android 13 is an Android, but nothing like the ones we've seen personality-wise (If you could say he has a personality). And then as much as I hate Broly, everything from his movie-onwards features villains that are pretty different to the ones in the series.
Maybe you could make a comparison between Janemba and Buu, but that movie is so different plot-wise to the Buu arc, I think people give it a pass.
It would have been funny if Toriyama decided to actually not make Goku become a Super Saiyan in the end because it would have been too obvious. Then this movie would have been even less relevant. Or maybe more, given it'd be our only guess as to what a Super Saiyan would be.
Anyway. Can't wait for the Super Saiyan for real!
Interesting perspective, although I totally draw the line at #13... and, well, Coola... ehhh... I'm not sure if it makes up for it or not. If I think about it, I don't know if I feel that any of the movie villains are anything more than serviceable. Movie 9 is one of my favorites, and I almost totally forget who the villains are.
Also, I loved yours and Hail Zeon's Dragon Cast. It was a lot of fun!
True. I like Movie 9 too, even though I think Bojack is unbearably boring. Maybe it's more complicated than just the villain. Some of the movies have the draw of an 'interesting' villain, some have the draw of a new form or attack, and some just have the draw of getting to see that thing you really liked in a new situation. But in Lord Slug, everything that's supposed to be new has either been done before, or will be done in a better way within a few months. The fact that Goku goes Super Saiyan before he goes Super Saiyan doesn't really work as a selling point for us when we retroactively know this isn't what it actually is.
Maybe that's the problem. Maybe it's just too obviously dated. It was something that worked best in 1991, and as a result, doesn't have as much of an appeal nowadays.

The only movie villain I find interesting (besides Beerus) is Garlic Junior, and that's mostly because of his history with God.
I just had a revelation: Lord Slug is derivative of something that isn't from Z, which means for most DBZ fans, the explanation is longer and actually trivia that not everyone knows. It's not something that can be hinted at, but has to be fully explained every time it comes up.
I'm a little sad that you didn't mention Chi-Chi's brief moment of awesomeness during the beginning, when she takes down some of Slug's goons, but otherwise great video :)
You forgot to mention that Chi Chi kicks some henchmen ass in this movie! It was brief, but an awesome moment I liked.
I was also disappointed at how little this movie did to explain mazeoku. Someone should do a re-write of DB and actually come up with solid, consistent in universe rules for how that works.

The part where she gets picked up by Gohan and tries to convince him to leave a wounded Piccolo behind on an exploding planet. Or did that only happen in the anime?
That only happened in the anime. In the manga, they never even make it back to the spaceship in the first place.
Wow. The anime somehow managed to screw Bulma over even more than Toriyama did in the manga it seems. That's unfortunate. :(

Ripper 30 yea I agree! I actually didn't know Chi Chi's Japanese VA was replaced from there on out so I was wondering why Chi Chi sounded so aggressive after the old VA was replaced. Now it finally makes sense lol.
Ramble even though Watanabe's Chichi was aggressive than Sho's chichi, still I would take her over Cranz's Chichi anyday Who makes chichi sound even more angry
@@ripper3052 You can automatically refuse to accept Cynthia Cranz’ Chichi by just watching the Japanese version. It’s not like the dub is essential Dragon Ball viewing, especially considering that it’s 2024, not 1996, and we have free access to the sub on home video.

It's a shame that the first times DB Dissection talked about Super Saiyan had to be in regards to discount Frieza and discount King Piccolo.

Thanks for another upload. I remember seeing this one when it came out in the states and was pretty disappointed with Goku's "Super Saiyan" form. I didn't understand why it seemed like it was a demo version of the full completion. Of course, that was the perspective of someone seeing this way after it debuted in 1991 where people in Japan still didn't know about the reveal. Years later I was wondering whether or not this took place right around the time Goku was fighting Freeza in the manga, but Toriyama hadn't made it as far in the narrative when Goku eventually does change. Thanks for confirming that. Also, you're right about the movies getting very formulaic starting with this one. I like the first three films just fine even with the major plot problems (especially Dead Zone's issues). I haven't revisited this film in a long time. Movie #6 and 9 are the only ones I found worth revisiting after 3. And I didn't go past 9. Maybe one day.
I think you should definitely go past 9. From 9 on, they're all pretty creative in their own ways. Some are generally beloved, some are generally reviled, and all but the 13th are pretty empty fluff, but all of them avoid feeling like the same warmed-up leftovers like 4-7 do.
Perhaps I will then. I think I didn't give those films a chance because those films started to implement the 6-7 years after Cell timeline where I think the series was way over the hill at that point.
I recently rewatched the film and I noticed two things that I rather liked about it. The false super saiyan form has this quirk where it leaves goku's aura on the surface of slug blows whenever he hits him, its a nice visual I'm surprised hasn't shown up anywhere since. Another factor I like is when goku uses kaioken after getting piccolo's power a giant after image of goku and piccolo flickers whick spokes slug before goku flies through him. As a fan of the duo of piccolo and goku tag team I really liked the moment.

Supposedly this movie is a sequel to "Tree of Might" because when Slug is looking through Bulma's memories, it shows reanimated shots from the opening of "Tree of Might".
I was getting too used to Kai's pacing, I had almost forgot how eternal that wait for SSJ felt. Can't wait to see what you have to say about the next bit of the Freeza arc.
Not the biggest fan of this movie, but your analysis at least makes it more interesting. I suppose I didn't really like the movie because I wasn't really feeling Slug as a villain.
As a kid, I did wonder why SSJ looked so different in this movie when compared to other parts of the series. It's not a bad look, but it clearly differs from the norm. I wonder how long Toriyama had been planning the exact design of Super Saiyan (did he start from the first mention of SSJ, or wait), and how much it changed during the design process.
Kai also spoiled me with it's much faster pacing. The original is painfully long particularly with the Freeza arc.

Movie 3 is a Saiyan coming to Earth, wrecking all of Goku's friends, Gohan changes into an Oozaru, Goku defeats the henchmen with ease, and a failed Genki Dama leading to a SUCCESSFUL Genki Dama. Although this Genki Dama actually beats him, unlike Vegeta.
Movie 2 had... the beam struggle. That was the only thing it really stole from the series.
Oh and the Saiba-- Biomen.

Fair points, and reflecting on that, I admit it's reasonable to say movie 3 is in the same ballpark as being as derivative as most of the other movies up to this point. However, I do feel all of its original elements (Hire Dragon) minimize those derivative points. Love it or hate it, there's a lot more going on in movie 3 than most of the other movies. Movie 2 has its fair share of original elements and even character-building threads, which is why I list it as my favorite. Oh, and don't forget movie 2 also had the same "collection of faces" genki dama scene the series had, and that Piccolo saves Gohan while taking out a Bioman the exact same way he takes out a Saibaiman. I don't know if you feel that's distinct enough from Biomen simply existing to list separately, but there you go. =P
But like I said, I don't see how movie 4 is any *more* derivative than any of the others. I guess, to compare it to movie 3, it's just so lacking in other plot points that maybe it makes it all the more glaring. I don't know. Honestly, it really takes all my willpower to not just say in the reviews of this movie and the upcoming movies, "Just... just watch the Abridged version. You'll have a much better time. They'll actually make you laugh at the tired old tropes rather than just groaning at them."
I mean, I know you chaff at people telling you Abridged is better than real Dragon Ball, but hopefully it won't make you feel the same way when I say I think you guys really, honestly improve on the more lifeless movies.
MistareFusion That's all entirely true, re: Movie 2. I just thought it was worth pointing out that Movie 3 had it's fair share of "Remember thiiiis!?" going on as well.
They all have Goku in it.
One less noticeable but distinct thing this movie did introduce was the middle movies' uncharacteristic brutality- bits like Piccolo "beheading" the orange enforcer, Slug throwing Goku through cars, Slug's bodily piercing spewing gallons of blood while Piccolo's was pristine, etc.- that ultimately peaked with Broly. I will always chuckle at Lanipator's review pointing that out at ever-higher pitches.
Realizing the Z movies later became biannual really explains their suddenly become tired and trodden after the first three.
I was actually lucky enough to experience most of Dragon Ball in chronological order. So by the time I saw this movie I had already seen the Piccolo Daimao arc. Yet somehow I never picked up on the similarities.
Then again, the Villain getting his wish granted midway through the story had already become a cliche in the Z movies by that point.

The first DBZ film I saw on the big screen. Ended up being my favorite just for nostalgia.
The ssj design was completed, Toriyama wanted the transformation exactly as you see in the movie: Goku with black hair, but during the processing of the manga, Toriyama was late with the timeline, so he decided to leave the hair white and to color them after to work faster. This is all in an interview to Toriyama's editor

Since you don't talk about the dub, I will once again give my two cents here. Most notably, this was the first MOVIE (as opposed to the TV specials that Funimation treats like movies) in which the alternate US score featured licensed music (which makes it clear that the dub was done in the early 2000s). Among those songs was "Stupefy" by Disturbed, which is interesting because that song drops numerous F-bombs which were left uncensored when Funimation originally released the single DVD in 2001 but was censored when they later released the remastered version [watch the scene where Goku becomes the "false Super Saiyan"]. I assume that it probably went under their radar since Disturbed is rather incomprehensible. This was also one of the few movies to use Bruce Falconer music cues from the show. They used the "Frieza power up theme" when Slug's henchmen are gathering Dragon Balls and the Dragon Theme when Slug summons the dragon.
There are also some really bad dub changes. As expected, Funimation removed all references to the aliens in this movie being Demon Clansmen and also completely changed the story behind Slug and how he became so powerful. That's a shame, considering that there's supposed to be a parallel between Slug and Piccolo Daimao. Speaking of which, This movie was released in 2001, and the Piccolo Daimao arc of Dragon Ball would not be officially, legally available in the US until 2003, so most Americans who bought that DVD wouldn't know the parallels.
Not going to lie, the replacement scores for Lord Slug, Cooler's Revenge, and Broly get me hyped-especially Cooler's Revenge. It's nice that the universe can handle both versions existing simultaneously, so I can live with my guilty pleasure without worry of blasphemy.
The climaxes of Bojack and Broly Returns MUST be seen in Japanese, though.
Also, a few weeks ago, someone asked Sabat on Twitter if the two Z specials can be redubbed, and he actually liked the idea.
Hearing that fact about Stupefy almost makes me want to go and watch the dub now.

Oh no, I agree with you. It would be great if they redubbed the two. Dubbing Episode of Bardock and Yo! Son Goku would be nice as well...and maybe the bonus clips from the Future Trunks special edition of RoF (though that wouldn't be quite possible now with Chris Ayres' condition).

I'm glad to see that at least one other person besides me on the internet gets it. That's the whole reason why Funimation re-scored the series in the first place. To make the music more pumping and stimulating. Even Toei has realized this with insert songs like "Only a Chilling Elegy" and "Saiyan Blood." Frankly its amazing that Toei learned that they're not living in 1965 anymore.

Just figured out a way to fix this movie, since Toei apparently mandated it to be called “Super Saiyan Son Goku”.
Regardless of whatever timeline discrepancies might take place, set the story on Earth a good amount of time after the battle on Namek. Center the story around Super Saiyan Goku essentially being this unstoppable force that made Freeza look like nothing in comparison, and center the story around everybody doing every conceivable option to defeat Slugg-who’s directly said to be stronger than Freeza-and failing in every conceivable way before Gohan finally comes to terms with his Saiyan power that he hates having so much.
Yeah, it’s SLIGHTLY derivative of the Cell arc in a world where that’s been one of the most well known Dragon Ball story arcs for over 30 years, but it would at least give the movie a reason to be called “Super Saiyan Son Goku”. Since the movie’s plot would be about the characters trying to live up to Super Saiyan Son Goku! Plus, it’d give Gohan the character development the Cell arc thought it was giving him!

Speaking of Chi-chi, do you notice that there's an inconsistency as to whether she wears pants with her outfit? Her outfit appears to be a cheongsam (Chinese dress), but she sometimes wears pants under it and sometimes has bare legs. She seems to only have bare legs in certain filler material (e.g. the first movie, this movie and the Garlic Jr. mini-arc) and has pants the rest of the time. Maybe it has something to do with which artists worked on the material. She also switches between having and not having sleeves on her outfit (not having from 3rd tournament arc through Freeza arc, having during Androids and Cell arc to not having in the Buu arc).
There's a piece of nit-picking nerdy trivia for you: Chi-chi's pants (or lack thereof). That aside, this was the first time Naoko Watanabe voiced Chi-chi? I didn't notice because she still sounds just as squeaky but later on, her voice got less squeaky.
I love how some people still think Lord Slug's Super Saiyan is a separate form.
I judge the Z movies by how long I can watch before rolling my eyes. I can get ~5 mins into this one which is the 2nd shortest with the Cooler movies being tied for the shortest at ~1:30+ mins because to hell with the Freeza saga but yay ED songs.
Its not the worst imo but it is boring. Its main draw is a SS Goku (which is pointless beyond '91) and Lord Slug who isn't interesting story or design wise. Chi Chi's brief fight is more interesting than any scenes with Slug. So compared to the other villains who are already meh he's one of the most meh. Maybe thats why fans hate it so much more but I don't understand the fanbase so what the fuck do I know?

Random thought. Would be hilarious if the “no same wish twice” rule for the Dragon Balls also included the exact same wording. So when Slug tries regaining his youth, Shenron just says “Sorry, someone else made that exact wish 9 years ago, can’t grant it again”.
I usually view Slug as an amalgam of Piccolo Daimo and Freeza
This was the first DBZ movie I ever saw, and easily one of my favorites, if not just for nostalgia.
Team Four Star's version had a better twist of Slug having split off from the Grand Elder.

Y'know if I was going to take a completely cynical absolutely zero-research punt on why this movie in particular has backlash? Assuming we're mostly considering the 90s western fanbase I'd assume it's down to being stuck BEFORE the coming wave of super saiyans fighting flashy villains with huge exaggerated techniques, but AFTER the period of early Z that still gets by on being more """grounded""" (probably not the right word). Like, it's not as dumb and extreme as the movies that follow, or as restrained as the prior films, so it's stuck in the middle of pleasing nobody?
I guess you could argue Movie 3 falls into that criteria too but that has a LOT of nostalgia-bias based on how early it was released, and just, people generally REALLY liking Turles, Turles has the charisma to hold people's attention, there's a reason everyone's happy to see him whenever he shows up in something.

In this movie, though you can say this can take place after "Goku arrive early", I can also see that Goku possibly defeat Frieza with the Spirit Bomb.
The best theory is that False Super Saiyan is a hidden potential that eventually become Super Saiyan. That's mostly head-canon than everything else I'll make in the future.
Also, the movie makes it seem like they went to Namek then came back to Earth

Even in it's heyday. Like he said it was a cash grab by putting Super Sayain in the title. As well as it is only ten days before Goku became a Super Sayain in the manga.
Speaking of titles, have you noticed that most of the movies have random, non-sequitur titles that have no specific reference to the plot of the movies, or emphasize the wrong point? A more relevant title for this movie would have been "The Demon Clan's Earth invasion" or "Lord Slug" (Which happens to be Funimation's more sense-making title). In fact, Funimation gives almost all of the movies more relevant titles. Why would you prefer the original Japanese movie titles other than on principle because they are the original titles that the original creators came up with?
I never said I prefer them. As a matter of fact I think most of the movie titles are complete garbage. And for most of them I can't hope to remember them. There is a reason most fans refer to them by number. It is certainly a subject I plan to address when it gets to that point. But that doesn't change the fact that they are the titles of the movies, like them or not, so naturally I will refer to them by their names. As for FUNimation's titles, while they are an improvement in terms of being able to remember them, they're hardly creative. Several of them are just the name of the villain!

Yes, the villain who sets the plot in motion. Pretty much the central element of all of the DBZ movies are the villains. Speaking of which, the English title for the next movie "Cooler's Revenge" which some might say is a questionable title since in both sub and dub versions it's clear that Cooler views Freeza with contempt and is not motivated by wanting to avenge his younger brother. Even just watching the dub I still understood that his motivation is the fact that Goku beating Freeza has brought dishonor to the family and Cooler wants to remedy that by killing Goku, which I think is a kind of "revenge" since it's about getting back at Goku for something Goku did that affected Cooler negatively.
So this movie is a glimpse into the future

I hate how they named the movie "Goku the Super saiyan" and his "Super Saiyan" form only appears for some few minutes and is not even that important, i can't tell if this movie is worse than Turles movie, both just feel so lame, at least Turles had potencial to be interesting if his character was explored more.
I don’t know how far toriyama used to plan this stuff but I’m thinking he was “inspired” by the movies even back then.

OH, i thought this would be commentary on the very concept of "super saiyan Goku"
I'd say the reason this one gets the most hate for being derivative is because of its villain. These movies are so low on content they pretty much have nothing but their villains going for them. And while Cooler and and Turles are also derivative being just more Sayians and Frieza monsters, they at least have some what of a different motivation to their original counterparts while here Slug straight up wants the exact same thing as Piccolo. A lot of this could be said for the Androids too, but that movie isn't really the highest regarded either and at least the androids have more distinct designs than old Sluggy boy here. The dub also adds in a few more jokes that gives it the feel of a proto abridged series for some extra enjoyment points.
This movie does have some flaws but it has a kickass U.S. Soundtrack.

I believe I stated in the review for World's Strongest Guy that it's the Z movie I would pick if I was forced to pick just one. But I love all of the first three. Movie 9 is also a very strong contender in my eyes.

But I like the DB movies with the gloomy color scheme the most! (Tree of Might), (Lord Slug) and (Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan) are my Faves. The only other that I really like that "was" colorful was (Cooler Revenge), and I think that might be bit of a cheat on my part because what I liked most about it is the American soundtrack LOL

I have to admit I thought you would completely trash this movie. Even though as you said it's more "Damning with faint praise" but still I expected more rage. I found that good since I actually kind of liked this movie, it's not my favorite but I do think it gets a lot of undue hate.

That Super Saiyan form really doesn't to seem interesting marketing wise. I noticed this form appeared in not a single video game including Heroes.
By the time it would've been in any games, it would've just been labeled Kaioken x100 as some fans tends to call it or something else....not to mention that actual SSJ was revealed 10 days later said in the video.

Being colorblind does not mean I see the world in grayscale.
@@MistareFusion Ok, can you explain EXACTLY what your specific colorblind condition entails? Can you tell us when it applies and when it doesn't? Considering that this comes up a lot in your videos, it seems necessary for us to be able to follow and consume your analyses.
Perhaps you can even make a dedicated video explaining it, and anytime you mention your colorblindness in a video, you can provide a card in the top right corner to that dedicated video. Anytime someone in the comments asks about your colorblindness, you can just post a link to that video.
Perhaps you can also give us the medical term for your particular variation of colorblindness, so we can google it for more details than what you provide in your dedicated video.
