  • Dragon Ball Dissection looks at the third and final Broli movie of the original run. But something has gone wrong. It's not Broli at all but some kind of bio-culture Broli clone! However, with #18, Goten, and Trunks leading the charge, does this movie have any redeeming elements, or is it just as bad as its reputation? Also, find out which contestant wins a copy of Dragon Ball: A Visual History.

From what I’ve pieced together, Broly decomposing into his goopy appearance wasn’t because of the fluid, but because his body wasn’t fully developed. The bio-fluid was inside his tank, used to develop him, but when he broke his container and the fluid was put into open air, it became the corrosive expanding threat it is in the movie.
However, this information seems to be exclusively found in Daizenshuu 6 so I wouldn’t blame anyone for not piecing that together.

I feel like this film's reception is less a product of the plot and more so how it treats Broli. I remember how big of a deal the "Legendary Super Saiyan" was when I was growing up, so for people to see this Icon of 'Merica style Rock the Dragon Ball Z turned into a goo monster and defeated by the C team was probably what detractors took away from the film, as opposed to what the film actually was.

The way I (want to) view Bio-Broli is as a personification of bringing the same villain back over and over again.
In the first movie, he became, for better or for worse, this immensely popular character. (Something that has stuck long enough that he's now part of Super and all that)
In the second movie, he was stripped down to his most basic traits, barely qualifying as a character anymore. Most fans hated it.
Despite that, he came back here, where he's no longer even Broli, it's the long dead body of the horse once known as Broli. So little effort went into bringing him back that he's toxic sludge that no one wants to touch.

I'm starting to think we seriously underestimate just how long it takes to produce a chapter of Shonen Jump manga. It's easy to fall into the Trap that because it is released on a weekly schedule that means it is also produced on a weekly schedule. By which I mean I think by this point it's clear that Toei has access to Toriyamas story ideas far before they see print in the Weekly Magazine.
Take the cell Saga for example. We're led to believe that when toriyama's ex-editor saw Androids 19 and 20 he called Toriyama and told him to change that. But we don't see the story start moving in a direction where would even begin to start laying the foundations of introducing Android 17 and 18 until something like a month and a halfs worth of chapters. The same thing happens again when he starts laying hints about Android 16 because at that point they are sincerely the actual villains of the Arc, and Cell wouldnt be introduced until months later from there.
I'm pretty sure Toriyama was probably submitting rough drafts of his story ideas or design concepts at the bare minimum months ahead of publication, and for production reasons Toei probably had access to those rough drafts. This makes stuff like toys Super Saiyan Goku movie coming out a week before the real Super Saiyan appearance in a chapter, or Dende being God before that would even be suggested in the manga, or this movie following up on a plot point from six months ago in the manga, far less eyebrow raising.

    • @MistareFusion
      @MistareFusion  3 роки тому +39

Oh, that's definitely the case. Toriyama was finished with chapters long before they saw the light of day. And other parties like Toei and Bandai were scooping up drafts on upcoming stories the second they were available. Even in as ramshackle an operation as mine, this video has been finished for a week and a half, and even that means I'm cutting things far closer than I'd like.
More my point when I make statements like that is to point out how we tend to underestimate how much work and lead time goes into making these movies.

  • @OurKindofEntertainment

I actually watched this movie last month for the first time in YEARRRRSSSSSSSS! I didn't hate it as much as I did back in the day. My biggest gripe when I first watched it was how we got such a major tease during the last few seconds when Goku was going to meet with Pikkon to fight Broly in Hell! That would've been awesome!
What made me actually enjoy this film so much was the fact that Goten and Trunks ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING! They were in a serious fight (with some comedy sprinkled in, but for the most part this was a serious threat) for the first time in quite awhile. Yes, they did fight as Gotenks against Super Buu, but most of that fight was just them playing around.
The battle with Bio-Broly was good because at least these two were part of the action instead of being pushed to the side as kids like in Super.

I absolutely think you should take a break from the manga for some more DBDTV. I think the sheer length of the Buu arc warrants it for a change of pace, not to mention that as it's the final arc, there really won't otherwise be anything else to cover in between the anime installments of Cell and Buu.
As to this movie though, yeah, Brolly is probably the focal point of why it's so maligned. Fans who hate him just see his inclusion for the third time as tiresome, while fans who love him see him being just a clone who gets swiftly mutated as an insulting fake-out. All that aside, however, I actually quite enjoy this movie for everything else it has to offer for pretty much all the same reasons mentioned. It might not be the best DragonBall movie, but it might just be one of the most fun.

06:20 I think that's something important to consider, back when the film came out, physical media collecting those moments weren't as much of thing back then. In the context of when this came out, being able to view a highlights of a show when you may have missed it when it was initially airing would hold so much more weight and value as to why they would format the movies like that. This is also why stuff like recap movies would be so popular. Yes, looking back at it now, it's somewhat repetitive and unnecessary but that's because we have modern tech and media where going back to previous episodes is significantly easier.

    • @EnigmaBarry

This. Lance touched upon this during the Hachiyack OVA, but the anime was always disposable, an advertisement for the manga. Things like the theatrical movies or even the video games meant you could get a self contained experience. Easier to buy Cooler's Revenge than to collect episodes of the entire Frieza arc. Even if you only care about the episodes where Goku actually fights Frieza, that's still 20 episodes.

I understand were you're coming from with the Broly trilogy remark. What however baffles me is Koyama's weak justification for it. It's kind of hilarious that he is struggling with one of Dragon Ball's biggest flaws, the power creep. However, Goku is dead and isn't the main protagonist in either of the Broly sequels so why worry about a opponent on his level? Goten, Trunks, Krillen, Videl and Android 18 are hardly the big guns of the the show at this point in time so why recycle Broly and even further water down what little character he already had? I don't get where Koyama is coming from at all, a case could be made for Gohan but he could just have come up with a new original villain to fight for Goten and Trunks in the third movie. All this quote is telling me is that Koyama has run out of ideas, Lmao!!

They wanted FIGHTS dammit! They don't care about underrepresented characters because how can you care about characters whose power isn't maximum and don't have a power level of two squajillion?! /s
I enjoy movie 10 and enjoy the advancing wall of death horror aspect of movie 11 as well as Krillin and #18's involvement. The scenes showing the priest and nameless extras and the baddie's pet dying to the sludge are horrific and some of my favourite scenes. But I was never big on Trunks and Goten and their antics. I think Movie 11 would've benefited more if it was a straight up horror movie in a DBZ style as opposed to a kind of rehash of 11 but with sloppy monsters.

I should really rewatch these movies. I really hated this one when I was younger but it sounds only kinda disappointing the way you describe it. For me if I had to guess it’s less that they waist Broly by making him a goo monster, it’s that they somehow manage to make him less threatening when they do. He should be EVEN more dangerous with this weird sci-fi ability of having melting slime under his control, but the floor is lava is an easy game to wind when you can fly.

A way to improve the threat perhaps could be to switch its weaknesses to water to coldness. At one point, one of the heroes sees the fluid touch water and be slowed by it, but not stopped. So they instead need to find a way to get a low enough temperature to freeze and stop the fluid and Broly, as because water only slows it down, it would still be able to slowly but eventually reach the mainlands through the ocean.

This was the other film I only watched when it aired on TV, and even then I think I only watched the last half of it, and because the airing rights weren't bought by the same TV channel that aired the anime, so they used a different dubbing studio for it, and the voices of the characters were really jarring.
This one, much like the previous one I've never watched in full, making it the only "classic era" Dragon Ball Z movies I've yet to watch (there's also the Dragon Ball movie that came out when GT was airing). Even if I personally think Movie 10 was still stale and boring for the most part, this one really ups the ante and feels much closer to a crazy light-hearted adventure you'd see in early Dragon Ball days, not bogged down in power levels or fighting for the sake of it. It's not my favorite, but it's fairly good and I feel like it only gets hated by rabid Broly fans for the most part.

(That's not even hyperbole, I actually started nodding off during the fights in the first two Broly films!) After watching it for the first time I can't believe people don't like this one, I found it one of the least boring DBZ movies by far. It was fun, funny, had plenty of both serious and comedic action scenes, and like you said it changed up the formula of the last bunch of movies. Even the inclusion of the World's Blandest Non-Character (Broly) couldn't bring down how fun it is. I'm not a big fan of the DB movies in general, but I think it's one of my favorites, honestly.

  • @Yuli_Ban

This movie could've been salvaged if Koyama ran with the idea of Broly causing trouble in Hell _on top of_ Bio-Broly existing. You can have the same dynamics and characters, and you could also have it reflect what's going on in the manga at the same time: Bio-Broly is initially a chaotic monster, until Mr. Satan tames him like he did Majin Boo, and then Bio-Broly basically turns "good," losing his bloodlust, maybe even befriending Goten (as a contrast to Tapion befriending Trunks, and symbolically important considering this is Mini Goku befriending a form of Broly). That is until the real Broly emerges from Hell, his power too great to be contained or maybe his fight with Super Saiyan 3 Goku accidentally opening a wormhole to the world of the living (ala Super Boo and Gotenks), and the end of the movie can only come by Bio-Broly sacrificing himself to destroy the soul of the original Broly.
That certainly would have worked way more, without needing to rely on the formula or even changing the characters who appear, instead better utilizing Mr. Satan throughout the rest of the movie instead of just the beginning.

I love seeing how Goten and Trunks work as a duo here. I am convinced that Gon and Killua were at least a little inspired by them. I love the DBZ movies, if for nothing else, how they utilize the rest of the cast (except the humans). I mean, Hercule, 18 and Krillin were great in this and didn't need any headliners for back up.
(I care about the adventure and couldn't care less about the villains)
I wish they used these movies like a rough road map for the types of stories they can use for the series.
I know it's wishful thinking, but I feel like Super should've been an ensemble cast from the start rather than a Main lead with a supporting cast because by this point, most of the cast members are all icons in their own rights and have fans wanting them to get a lot more screen time.

In a perfect world, that would make sense, and that was my original plan. But since the TV version of each arc is not finished until well within the next manga arc, there are instances of the show taking elements from the next arc and incorporating it "early." Like, for example, Gyumao's "grandpa" look debuted in the manga Saiyan Arc, but it was taken by the TV staff and used for the wedding dress filler directly after the 23rd Budoukai. Because of instances like that, I decided it was ultimately safer to stay a couple of arcs behind. And that has worked out well... until possibly now. =P
