One added bonus you gained by using the needle scaler is stress relief that will prevent cracking in the future. A gentleman that ran a welding shop after he returned after WW2 used to weld cast iron tractor manifolds (not braze) and he would peen the welds after he let them slow cool in sand and he never had cracks in his cast iron repairs.
Quick little safety tip when braking an angle into aluminum in the hydraulic press @5:54 and @10:37. Using your hands to locate and align the part where you want to bend makes perfect sense. Once it locks in as you start the bend by raising the pressure in the press, REMOVE YOUR HANDS FROM THE PART. I was bending an unknown grade of aluminum in the press and unfortunately discovered how violently the end I was ‘guiding’ could hit my squishy flesh and do all kind of damage when the aluminum suddenly fractured. Your hand can’t adjust anything once the press locks in the bend, so remove it from the scene. Hope that helps someone without going into the graphic detail of the damage that explosive violence did to my precious hand. 👍😳👍
I turned an ignition coil cover out of a chunk of aluminum. I wanted a finned look like my valve covers and air cleaner. Once I had machined the part I used a needle scaler just like you did. Then spun it up on the lathe again to highlight the tops of the fins. It looked like a vintage cast piece. This piece and the tank itself are right up my alley. I love this stuff!
You might consider getting some cork sheet with an adhesive backing and line the saddles with it to prevent vibration between the saddle and the tank. Its what they used to do with gas tanks on OEM cars of that vintage, so it would not be out of place on this application.

Also,for a really quick random,magnesium style look,try oven cleaner....eats and etches into the alloy,dark grey splotchy finish...happens in mins
I love this shop. I have to steal another one of your ideas for my Model A... I bought 2 of those tanks. But I'm thinking of hanging them like how the bombs would have been hanging in the bombers kinda make it look like they are floating in the trunk area between the seat and trunk space.
I wonder if this would be a case where it would be worth the extra effort to cut strips of the same material to use as filler rod to get the perfect color blend on the welds, rather than the slight difference in the alloy between the sheet and the rod. ??
I have used old horse harness before from farm auctions for straps on my tanks for that vintage old leather look before There double stitched for a cool look !
Have you tried dipping aluminium parts in a coffee bath, which is slightly acidic? I've seen it used a lot by blacksmiths on "damascus" parts, where different alloys of steel get different stains. The cheapest instant coffee is usually enough for decent effect.
I was able to get a great finish using black Japan spirt based wood stain! Never seen the coffee bath one but tomorrow it’s on. Cheap and nasty coffee here we come

@@bennettscustomsco It basically makes your 200 amp machine feel like a 270 amp machine cause the helium argon mix seems to burn hotter and you don't have to wait till the next day to heat up so you can start to lay dimes. We use it at work for as thick as 20 mm Ally plate but the mix is rather expensive at the moment and a bottle might cost you around $600 AUS for a g size bottle more or less. Hope this helps by the way I love the work you do it makes me want to go to the garage and have a go at building something.
Cut a bit more consitently in terms of speed with your plasma cutter, anytime you bind up and jump a bit to move forwards it will leave an uncut segment

Foundry, no Foundry required. A forge is where you use heat and pounding (force) to shape metal. A foundry is where you liquidate metal and pour it into a hollow (mold) I think you should have built a foundry. Not because you didn't get the look you wanted but having a foundry is nice to have. Foundrys are pretty simple, when you consider someone had a foundry for Otzi's bronze hatchet 5,300 years ago.
Hey mate, can I suggest you to use a cutter instead of a hand blade? I should suggest you X-Acto, made in USA and Olfa, made in Japan. I use both but personally I prefer Olfa.
I would be curious if this would work on aluminum wheels...you see guys trying to powder coat Torque Thrusts to look like mag, but I would be curious....

Bud, an A for effort. I don´t like how stupid chopped the car is, I don´t like the brownish "patina". I tell Ya how to age that shit, how we do it around: take the pieces, look for the next agriculture menurepile and burrie them in that. Come back in four weeks, done. And: the bus look stupid with that wart on its right side air inlet, it´s too low and the engine compartment looks like the engine is in jail. It don´t fit the car at all. But if You wanna be talked about it´s the go to thing. The rear lights don´t fit, too- at least use some original VW lights. it looks like if an Asian had eye surgery to hide his origin. That´how it looks. But (thankfully) that´s fixable. Sell the car back to Germany (to me), I take care of the little one. It gets back its ride height, its rear lights and the engine door so it looks like a bus again.
