- In this video Dr O'Donovan explains how to treat and prevent BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS (BV).
BV happens because of a change in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria and a drop in the lactobacillus bacteria inside the vagina which is responsible for keeping the vagina slightly acidic so bad bacteria don't grow as well.
Now the good news is that BV usually doesn't cause any other health problems. But it can lead to issues, especially when you're pregnant or trying to get pregnant so in this video we’ll cover treatment and prevention.
SYMPTOMS OF BV:
• A burning feeling when you pee
• A fishy smell that gets stronger after sex
• Itching
• Thin white, gray, or green discharge.
TREATMENT OPTIONS:
Antibiotics like (metronidazole or clindamycin) are normally given to treat BV. This could be a tablet you take by mouth or a cream or gel you put into your vagina.
You'll need to take most treatments for 5 to 7 days and you should finish all your medicine, even if the symptoms go away. This is because if you stop early, the infection could come back.
It's common for bacterial vaginosis to come back, usually within a few months and if it does come back, you'll usually be given more antibiotics to treat it.
If you get it more than 4 times a year then you may be given an antibiotic gel that you put in your vagina. You may need to use this for a few months to help stop bacterial vaginosis coming back.
PREVENTATIVE TIPS:
• Clean sex toys after every use.
• Don’t douche - Douching upsets the natural balance of bacteria and so can scented soaps, bubble baths, and vaginal deodorants.
• Get tested for sexually transmitted diseases, and make sure your sex partners are tested.
• Try to use protection with every sexual partner - for example if your partner is male ask them to use a condom.
• Use only water or mild soap to wash your genitals.
• Finally, wipe from front to back after you use the bathroom.

Hey ladies, I’ve had bv for yearsssss and it’s so embarrassing especially when you’re with a partner. And the antibiotics only work temporarily 😩 the only thing that legit helped me was when I changed to a low sugar diet. I am no doctor but I’m telling y’all since 2014 I had it and suffered for 5 years until I changed my diet. Limit sugars and carbs and drink a gallon of water everyday and it naturally got rid of that smell. Try it for even just a month and I guarantee you will be surprised like I was. ❤️❤️❤️ I hope this comment helps

@@yaasy77smart1 sugar. I follow a low carb diet. So I eat mostly protein, veggies and fats. If I do have a sweet tooth I replace regular sugar with monk fruit (my fave substitute sweetener) and when I eat fruit I try to stick with all the berries but I’ll indulge in watermelon too! If I go for fried food, it’s without the breading or I’ll use a mixture of isopure protien powder or almond flour. I have eczema flare ups too and I noticed my lady parts and skin start acting up when I’m consuming too much sugar. Drink a gallon of water a day. If you’re a drinker go for plain alcohols without the sugar, or you can have brut wines, beers I drink corona premier, michultra and miller lite. I’ve lost a great amount of weight in this process but this has been my cure for bv 💯 lmk if you try it!
If you absolutely need a soda, try to aim for seltzers or diet Dr Pepper taste better than regular Dr Pepper to me! Also if you need help planning meals, I follow Low carb love and kick weight with Keisha here on youtube for motivation because going low carb is definitely a lifestyle change but do what’s best for you. I just recommend this because it was my last hope and it worked for me

I'm telling you, as someone with BV for 13 yrs because of antibiotics, and nothing, nothing worked except for fresh ginger root. It might be crazy but it worked get rid of it. I was eating gresh ginger root with meals to fix digestive issues and got rid of bv as well. Only after 4 days. A piece of ginger root in the morning with warm water ( size of the thumb nail), a piece before and after every meal, and a piece before sleep. Try to avoid sugar for a while so it doesn't feed the bacteria. Try it, you gave nothing to lose.
Start treating men for this bc they are the ones passing it around.

So what I’m reading from the comments is , sugar is basically causing this smell? Aka my diet? That explains it because I’ve gone to the doctor to get medicine.. it just caused major symptoms which was dizziness and felt like fainting half the time, couldn’t drive… I read about BV more now, and now I don’t feel alone.. thank you

I have suffered with reoccurring bv for yrs and antibiotics flagyl made it worse what the drs don’t tell you is that antibiotics can’t break down the biofilm that’s why bv keeps coming back I just had a total hysterectomy and still got bv boric acid does help

@@Kenken77733 hey, I’ve had chronic bc for years. What really helped me was making sure your partner and you have a little “private part” wash” before intercourse. Personally, I use a specific wash before and after intercourse. It is pH balancing. I recently got another brand and will try that soon. the wash is from target, it’s the love wellness ph balancing cleanser, I think it was about 15$?There is another good cheaper wash on the market that I also got at target, it’s called monistat maintain dani one cleanser with boric acid, haven’t tried it yet but I’m sure it works just fine. It’s about 5$. I also make sure to pee directly after intercouse and was my vagina regularly and when I get really sweaty. Hope this helps! Oh! Also I only wear cotton underwear

@@salenasheppherd2834 maybe - the birth was magical and painless. I used gas and air, tens machine and double hip squeezes from my partner. No other drugs. No intervention. I didn’t feel any ring of fire. She was 7 pounds 6. I hadn’t washed the day I went into labour at 9pm. Which may have even helped her slide out.
She’s 6 months now and standing since 2 months and saying hello at 10 weeks. I delivered her (my first) when I was 34 years old. Very alert. No known health issues. So far - so good

It's a nice explanation of what BV is. But, why is lactobacillus bacteria reduced, and how to keep it at a healthy level. For me BV, yeast infections, etc. were rare -- until menopause. If you're in menopause hormone issues contribute to these infections. After research I decided eString estrogen ring plus progesterone was the way to go and I'm doing well now. Cleveland Clinic has an article on the estrogen/progesterone treatment in menopause.

@@mairamaan9297 The most important thing is to get your estrogen levels back in line and your doctor will do a blood test to see where your estrogen level is if you haven't done that already. If your estrogen levels are in line then you should get a pelvic exam and check for any infection, including a urinary tract infection. Sometimes it's hard to tell between vaginal discharge and urinary issues since they are so close together physically. It's possible digestive issues may be involved, especially low stomach acid since that can prevent bacteria and virus elimination in the stomach. Bottom line, go see your doctor
How do you feel about vaginal probiotic suppositories? I had undiagnosed BV for a long time that became recurrent...and eventually turned to p.i.d. non STD/STI... just regular PH changes during ovulation and sensitivity to things (even sex with one monogamous partner). Im now in years of relapsing p.i.d. in my 4th chronic flare up and becoming more close together. Its horrid terrifying pelvic pain.

I’ve controlled my bv with flora specific probiotics and diet. IF it smells I put coconut oil up there to calm it down but it only smells if my diet of bad. A bad diet is excess sugar, refined sugars. Soo a quick remedy would be eating leafy greens I might make greens soup eat that once or twice a day. 2 pills twice a day of Pro biotics. No sugar, no alch. Min carbs (this turns into sugar in your blood and feeds the bacteria) and coconut inside. 3-5 days it’s clear of smell. I continue with minimal sugar and keep taking probiotics. 1-2 pills a day, then once a week, once every 3 weeks. Balance the doses with diet.
I read on reddit that a woman who was dealing with almost constantly recurrent BV was advised by her doctor to supplement a specific strain of lactobacillus to see if it would help prevent flare-ups. She said it had worked.

I couldn't understand the odor I thought it was my partner making it smell. Apparently the mirena I had in my (cervix)? Came out of place. And with it was the horrible smell of bv. I thought it'd go immediately and was embarassed when it didn't. There needs to be more awareness of this problem

It could be bv if it smells fishy but to be sure go get checked out and the dr can tell you if you have bv or not if you do they will give you flagyl or clindamycin and then you will need diflucan for a yeast infection try boric acid suppositories it works wonders

@@hoonahameed2704 yes it works look at my previous comments to see how to do it , if you dont believe me just look it , also if your urine smell bad and is super yellow may sure to drink water and you will quickly see your urine become lighter and then it will just start looking like water.

Sounds like you have bv flagyl and clindamycin both are antibiotics that they use to treat bv but then you need diflucan for a yeast infection try using boric acid suppositories

@@swechchhathakuri5117 when you take antibiotics for bv you will get a yeast infection which is what you are experiencing they have diflucan for yeast if you keep taking antibiotics the bv bacteria will become resistant so try the boric acid for a week it works I have been using them for yrs since I can’t take antibiotics
