What is acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It often causes whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples, and can appear on the face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders. Acne is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages.
How do you treat acne?
Treatment for acne depends on its severity and persistence. Here are some common approaches:
Topical Treatments
- Over-the-counter (OTC) topical treatments: These include products with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, and sulfur.
- Prescription topical treatments: These may include retinoids, stronger benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, or a combination of these.
Oral Medications
- Antibiotics: To reduce bacteria and fight inflammation.
- Oral contraceptives: For women, certain birth control pills may help regulate hormones that cause acne.
- Anti-androgen agents: These can help by reducing the androgen hormones that increase oil production.
- Isotretinoin: A powerful drug used for severe acne that doesn’t respond to other treatments.
Other Treatments
Light therapy: Various light treatments can help reduce acne.
Chemical peels: These can remove dead skin cells and reduce inflammation.
Drainage and extraction: This is a procedure to remove large cysts.
Steroid injections: These can reduce inflammation and shrink cysts quickly.
What are the symptoms of acne?
The symptoms of acne can vary depending on the severity of the condition. Common signs include:
- Whiteheads: Closed plugged pores.
- Blackheads: Open plugged pores.
- Small red, tender bumps: Called papules.
- Pimples: Papules with pus at their tips.
- Large, solid, painful lumps: Called nodules, beneath the surface of the skin.
- Painful, pus-filled lumps: Called cystic lesions, beneath the surface of the skin.

I was prescribed doxycycline for my acne when I was in my late teens, it helped a lot.

I had acne when I was younger. Tetracycline & UV therapy were only mildly effective. First time my skin looked decent was when I was pregnant.

I still get mild acne in my 40s. I just started using moisturizer with sun protection. The acne seems to have gone, but it's too early to tell. I had thought that putting oily stuff on your skin would make acne worse. Why doesn't it? Does the type of oil matter? Also, the sun protection hasn't triggered any psoriasis, though I've got good treatment for psoriasis.
I used to suffer a lot from impertigo i hated that.
