RIP, Mr Betts. When Duane died most bands would have rolled over and slowly unraveled. Dickey grabbed the bull by the horns and set about making them an enduring entity, never forget him
Dicky was watching his 3 yr old daughter Jessica having a 3 yr old moment; running, laughing, giggling, chasing the dog, etc. and he wanted to write a melody to describe it. You should play it for your daughters. They'll love it.
Dickey wrote this for his little daughter, Jessica. We lost our Jessica at 29 years of age, and this song is my cell phone ring tone as a tribute/reminder. What a beautiful piece of music. Do listen to the studio version from the Allman Brothers.
Dickey Betts on his famous red Gibson Guitar, letting it rip. "Jessica" is one of the greatest songs to feature awesome Guitar work. It was also used as the opening theme music for the BBC version of the show "Top Gear", a great car show. RIP to Mr. Betts, saw him a couple of times and he was spectacular. I believe this was Dickey's band Great Southern.
Dickey Betts was an incredible rock, country and blues guitarist. His passing is a great loss to humanity and music lovers in particular. He could really bend those strings. Rest in peace Dickey.
RIP, DICKEY BETTS!! Thank You for Sharing Your Talents with THE WORLD!! This song was written for his toddler daughter! It's SO JOYFUL and LIVELY - just like a toddler girl! Reminds me of when my daughter was that age - runnin' ALL OVER THE PLACE and pretty much finding JOY in EVERYTHING!! LOVE IT!! Thanks for paying homage, Lee - this WHOLE BAND is just SO GOOD!!! ENJOY!
For me, Dickey really held the Allman Brothers band together. He came up with such tasty licks on the guitar and always seemed like the professional in the room. RIP Dickey. 80 years is a pretty good run.
He was a musical genius, both as a musician and songwriter. And he & Duane were the most dynamic pair of guitarists to ever play in a band since Beck & Page briefly joined in the Yardbirds. RIP to the one who helped write & play the soundtrack of my life.✌️❤️🎶
Django Reinhardt was one of the greatest guitar players that ever lived. He burnt his hand in a fire at age 18 and had to relearn the guitar using just his first two fingers. Very cool of Dickey to think of him. RIP man
Dickey’s son Duane Betts is a founding member, along with Devon Allman (son of Gregg), of The Allman-Betts Band. He is the spitting’ image of his father and plays in a similar style. I met Duane when his band played the “Southern Rock Cruise” a few years ago. They covered several Allman Bros. tunes, like “Blue Sky” and “Dreams” during their sets.
We lost The Allman Brothers Band one at a time, but I always could think “We still have Dickey, and he hasn’t changed!” Jaimoe’s the only one left. There’s a drummer you should check out, while he’s still alive.
Could not stay awake after F.Z. this morning. Shame that the band that gave me so many live thrills will never be again. R.I.P., Dickie, Duane, Berry, Butch, and Greg. Peace to Jaimo and all.
Great version! ...And I'd never heard that bit of trivia about Django - so cool! I was fortunate enough to see him live several times with the Allman Brothers - among the more memorable shows I've seen. RIP Dickey.
I saw the Allman, Betts family revival, which is one of Gregg's sons and Dickey's son out touring, keeping the brother's music alive, in Sarasota on Dickey's last birthday. He didn't play and did not look good, but the crowd gave him a standing ovation.
Another great one of my time passes. Those were the days of great lead guitarist like Dickey (Allmans Bros.), Page( Led Zep), Rod Price (Foghat), Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple & Rainbow), and on and on. The 70's was the time of the electric guitar and gifted hands!!!
The man was and is a legend. You're right about his clean sweet guitar playing, but he could shred it with the best of them too. For more of Dickey check out his early solo stuff, such as with Great Southern. Songs like Good Time Feeling and Highway Call are worth a reaction. thanks!
Such a great guitarist. It was amazing to see him matching Duanne back in the day, and after Duanne's death he really carried on a lot of the musical style they pioneered in the early Allmans.
Such a beautiful tone over the years that was a early 50s Gibson, Les Paul gold top PAT pickups that produce that amazing warm round sweet tone one could hear over and over
This show was called Guitar Greats and was aired on MTV in 1984. The house band was Chuck Leavell on keys, Michael Schrieve on drums, Kenny Aaronson on bass. Each musician had a stellar career and played with the best of the best. You may have seen Schrieve drumming with Santana at Woodstock. Leavell was with the Allman Brothers in the 70’s and went on to become musical director for The Rolling Stones. Look up HSAS.
2 years later I saw him and greg allman do a free show in a field in philly about 150 people there Dickie was also my first live act to see on June 10 1977 at jfk stadium with frampton jgiels band and skynyrd rip brother
One of the best musicians that ever lived, right up there with Mozart. imo Looking at the image this is an excellent version of Jessica with an amazing keyboard and bass player. 😁😁😁
Have you ever listened to Mozart? The hyperbole in the comments sections is getting ridiculous. The fact that this is your opinion doesn't say much about your grasp of music. What a stupid statement.
His latest gig is playing Georgia music with Mike Mills from REM and Mike's highschool buddy Robert McDuffie on violin. Jessica is one of the songs they play in their shows. They won a Grammy last year for a PBS special they did on the Fourth of July. I know all of this because my buddy plays guitar in that band.
@@blitztim6416 Love Sea Level and always enjoyed the play on his name (first initial "C" + alternate spelling of last name Leavell) to get the band name.
Yeah, when Live at the Fillmore East came out I was a teen. Smoked a lotcof weed and drank alot of beers listening to that album. The allman Brothers are my favorite all time band.
Allman Brothers Band, now that's a rabbit hole. Combination of southern rock/blues/jazz. Stormy Monday, Blue Sky, Whipping Post, One Way Out, Statesboro Blues, Dreams, It's Not My Cross to Bear & on & on.....Albums to listen Eat a Peach and Live at Fillmore East.
You need to check out the "Allman Betts Band" This group was formed in 2018. What is interesting is it includes the sons of three founding members of the Allman Brothers Band , They are Devon Allman, Duane Betts, and Berry Duane Oakley. Dickey was guiding them in many ways. The band plays mostly original songs, with some covers of Allman Brothers songs mixed in. Couple songs I enjoyed are " Good Ol' Days"; " Long Gone"; " Down To The River"; " Autumn Breeze"; " Southern Rain"' "Pale Horse Rider"; "Savannah's Dream"; and " The Doctor's Daughter".
It’s crazy because a few days ago I was thinking “I’d love for Lee to react to some Allman Bros songs”. Jessica is definitely my favorite ABB song so that would have been my suggestion. Then the next day, Betts passes
Dickey was as much a part of the sound of the Allman Brothers Band as any of the others, Duane, Greg, Berry, Butch, and the only current survivor, Jaimoe. Listen to the live version from the Fillmore East of Dickey's "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", a beautiful composition with fantastic solos by Dickey and Duane.
First song I thought of when I heard of Dickey's passing was "Pony Boy". I think it captures his attitude and playfulness perfectly. And the Guitar work is off the chart. Also, I can't be sure, but that looks like Chuck Leavell at the Piano, the Pianist on the album version of Jessica (and throughout the Brothers & Sisters record). Truly a remarkable Musician. When the Piano Solo part was starting I thought to myself "Go on then mate, are you gonna attempt to recreate that Leavell solo?!", then thought "Hah, sorry Chuck, as you were!".
The Allman Brothers played so much at the New Orleans Warehouse they were called The House Band. Google New Orleans Warehouse Concerts for a list of the greatest bands in the world. It opened in Jan. 1970 with Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green), The Flock and Grateful Dead.
Another *great,* the songwriter/singer/guitarist Hank Williams, wrote the lyric "No matter how I struggle and strive,/I'll never get out of this world alive." Hank died in 1953 at age 29 ~~~ and his song "Ramblin' Man" was the inspiration for Dicky Bett's (very different) song "Ramblin' Man."
Phenomenal guitarist and Allmans an amazing band .. And many bands followed in their footsteps …Cant speak highly enough of them and his passing was a sad sad day . Hurts like losing Bonham and Peart in the music that I like …Played the guitar without effort , just flowed majestically ..Rip Dickie ..❤
This was Dickey’s solo act, I believe the keyboardist is Chuck Leavell, who also played with Dickey in the Allman Bros. This has always been one of my favorite songs. Totally hear the beach sound you’re talkin about, but for me, this song always sounded like taking a hike through some lush green mountains while tripping on shrooms and you walk into an open field full of flowers and vibrant color
The pianist may be Chuck Leavell who plays keyboards for David Gilmour in Pompei in 2016 and sings the verses in "Comfortably Numb" in that performance. He's obviously a great pianist.
RIP Dickey 😞 . 1984 was during the years between the Allman's break-up after the 1st reunion ( 1979 - 1983 ) Dickey & Gregg were off doing solo work with their bands until the Dreams tour & reunion in 1989 that would see the band stay together with some personnel moves along the way until they packed it in after Oct 2014 . Check out the version of "Blue Sky" from the Live at Great Woods video which is an excellent take of the song from the Warren Haynes / Allen Woody era of the band in the 90's .
I've forgotten his name but the keyboard player was in the backing band for the Rolling Stones on several tours. I always thought that Dickey and Jerry Garcia were born of the same cloth with Dickey having a bit more of a southern flair. RIP
Heart and soul of the band before and after Duane IMO. Lee, on your next road trip check out Hand Picked from Highway Call. Oh brother Dickey rest joyously in the music of the spheres.
Dickie Betts had a band for a while called Betts Hall Leavell and Trucks. It might have been them. I saw them back in the day and they tore the house down. They were great. Kurt from Maine

This is not ABB - just Dicky on his own and the piano player Chuck Leavel who joined the ABB after Duane Allman died and stayed with them for a few albums before moving on to the Rolling Stones.
Lee, the part you didn't quite get to in what you were reading was, "Jessica, Betts's baby daughter, crawled into the room and began bouncing to the music. "I started playing along, trying to capture musically the way she looked bouncing around the room," said Betts, who named the song after her"
Dickey was apparently Bob Dylan's favourite guitarist. To add to this video (watch all of this first, right?) there is also a good Betts reminiscence on the fine channel of Otis Gibbs. (not linking it, right?)
I saw him in the same venue around this time, but not sure if it was the same night. Ramblin' Man, Blue Sky, and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed are three more Dickey Betts tunes you need to hear.
I did Elizabeth a few weeks ago. Oh wait... (all jokes aside I did lol great tune as well)
RIP, Mr Betts. When Duane died most bands would have rolled over and slowly unraveled. Dickey grabbed the bull by the horns and set about making them an enduring entity, never forget him

So sad. He lived in my town and we loved him. This song was written for daughter when she was 3 and she appears on the cover
That's a beautiful thing. My daughter turns 3 in like a month. So sad and so beautiful at the same time
I've heard Sarasota, but recently heard Osprey. I'm in North Port
@@diverdown631 - Osprey is in Sarasota County.
Lovely tribute,thank you.
Brother Betts did name the song "Jessica" after his daughter. The little girl on the back cover is Berry Oakley's daughter Brittany.
We appreciated your tribute to the great Dickey Betts - RIP Guitar Man. (That's the great Chuck Levell on the keys)
Indeed. Speaking of which - have I requested Sea Level recently?
The great Chuck Leavell on keys. He has been the music director for the Rolling Stones since 1982! he is also a world wide recognised Tree Farmer!

RIP Dickey Betts. We lost another great one.
Damn. I am just now hearing about his passing. We have his timeless music to celebrate and he would love to have us do just that. Do your thing Lee!
RIP Dickey!
