  • Even though the video quality wasnt the best, the sheer talent and musical badassery shined through all of it. This was amazing. Sorry for spacing out half way through, I had some really weird shit happen to me while recording. I won't mention it here but yeah, very strange.

Had friend in a band who was gigging in south in 70s who had old woman approach them in a restaurant and asked them “are you boys The Rolling Stones?” They said yes and gave her autograph with Brothers names. I am about 100 sure I met Duane when I was 12. This guy who looked like no one looked at the time, started talking to me who was looking at a guitar in a store. He told me his band was playing in Gaslight Square in St Louis. Told me about the Vox amps they had in his southern drawl. Years later, after hearing Allmans and Derek and the Dominos, I dug into Duane and his past. Saw photo, and read history. Turns out the time and places matched the guy I met years earlier and the photo from that time hit me hard and gave me chills.

The two drummer thing: I saw something amazing at a Joe Walsh concert at the Santa Barbara bowl in the early 1980s - as usual, Mr. Walsh had two drummers with him on stage with two full drum sets - as they were playing from OPPOSITE sides of the stage, they (Joe Vitale, his normal drummer and another guy) threw their drumsticks across the stage like jugglers with bowling pins, each while playing the song flawlessly! They did this for the ENTIRE song! I couldn't believe it, so I took my camera to the stage and photographed it - got the pictures back, and it was real! Too much!

Eric Clapton, a guitar player of some repute, said that it had only happened a few times in his life, when he heard a song on the radio and he immediately pulled his car over to find out who the guitar player was. It happened with Jimi Hendrix, It happened with Duane Allman and it happened with Stevie Ray Vaughn. As someone else mentioned, Duane Allman later played with Clapton when the Layla sessions were recorded. Duane played slide guitar on that tune, as no one else could ... with the possible exception of Derek Trucks (whose uncle Butch Trucks was a founding member and drummer of The Allman Brothers Band). Derek, himself, was later a member of The Allman Brothers Band and is a sublime slide guitar player in his own right.

This was part of a PBS special filmed 9/23/1970 at the Fillmore East. You can see other footage from this night from different bands on youtube. The quality is much better for them because it was produced and polished for the special. The Allman Brothers were left out because some doofus forgot to plug Gregg Allman's mike in until halfway through the performance. (The control board or something.. the audience could hear him just fine). All we have is the raw footage. So what should have been their big break didn't happen and they had to wait another year or two to get big. Duane Allman was royally pissed after the fact when he found out.

I recommend live performances only of Moonchild, Shadow Play, Last Of The Independents, Pistol Slapper Blues, Laundromat, Bullfrog Blues, Off The Handle, and Shin Kicker! ✌️🤘🎸

To hear Duane Allman's (who soloed second) signature slide guitar song, hear him on "Statesboro Blues". Some of his signature licks from that song are widely copied. I hope you also check out the later band lineup with Derek Trucks (nephew of the drummer Butch) and Warren Haynes on guitars (like on the 2003 Beacon Theatre DVD). Derek played many of Duane's slide guitar parts in their old material. Duane also played on Eric Clapton's "Derek And The Dominos" album, so Derek Trucks toured with Clapton, and they played some of the material from that album, with Derek playing Duane Allman's parts.

If I could only have three albums It would be this Fillmore East album, Derrick and the Dominos and George Harrison's All Things Must Pass.

1971 was pre-VHS, lol. Home video players/recorders didn't become commonplace until the 1980's. And it was all analog at the time, not digital.

This is actually sounds like it's the studio recording dubbed with film from the Fillmore East . There are videos with sound from this performance out there . The Version of the song on their album "Live at the Fillmore East" is the signature version of this song . As a fellow drummer & NYC area resident for most of my life , I had the pleasure of seeing the later versions of the band during their annual "March Madness" Beacon Theater residency and when I would sit in the loge or balcony for a show I would always watch some of the stuff Jaimoe , a trained jazz drummer would lay down opposite Butch "Freight Train" Trucks laying down the primary beat . I loved watching him play something that as I'm watching , thinking "How did He Make THAT Fit ?!? "

I seem to recall the Fillmore East album was put together two or three nights and somewhat pieced together to get the best result for the album. So maybe this could be from a nights performance not used on the original Fillmore East album. I also noticed on they were going right into the next song -Whipping Post as you can hear those opening bass notes. But on the Fillmore East album that song has an iconic introduction from Duane- “We got a little number from our first album we're going to do for you. Berry starts her off" - then someone in audience calls out “Whipping Post!" and Duane responds, "You guessed it” then the bass starts.

@@bradsense7431 . I Know The Version of "Elizabeth Reed" on LAFE Is from 2 separate performances . Producer Tom Dowd has said it himself . The splice point according to him was when Duane's solo comes in , on the album recording , which is from a different take from the songs beginning on that album . At the time the Brothers only had a limited set list so playing the same songs on 3 consecutive nights was not an issue as they played the same songs (but as fans of the band know those same songs could sound very different from one night to the next ) You have to love the bands stamina at that time , playing You Don't Love Me > Whipping Post > Mountain Jam without stopping , well over an hour worth of playing with no breaks . Even years later they kept up that crazy pace . I saw them at Jones Beach in 2004 with the amazing guitar tandem of Warren Haynes & Derek Trucks channeling Duane & Dickey as they Played without stopping , "Black Hearted Woman ( with "The Other One" jam at the end ) which flowed into Mountain Jam , which made a pit stop to drop in some of the jazz song "Afro Blue" in , then went back into Mountain Jam and then brought it into "Whipping Post" to conclude the set . Then when you thought things couldn't get better , they dropped an amazing version of "Layla" for the encore . I have the Instant Live recording of this show & it is probably the best performance I've ever seen them give & I saw them 35 times over the years , so to me that's saying something .

@@user-bh5jv8hi3b that 2004 show must have been amazing. I first knew of ABB when a friend had the Fillmore East album and we played that thing over and over again. Their sound had such appeal to me I was hooked right away. The mix of rock, blues, jazz ,country and even Latin I hear when listen to them was so unique. That was around 1972. I eventually saw them live four or five times in later seventies and through the eighties. I don’t have much desire to go to concerts anymore but probably have seen a couple hundred back in the day. The one exception is I want to see Tedeschi Trucks Band live. Watching videos of them perform stirs up something in me and if the opportunity comes I am taking it.

Now you’re getting into the meat of rock ‘n’ roll! Love this pic. Excellent critique Lee! Also don’t worry about remembering all the band members names. Just remember you are here to react to the music. I really enjoy watching your reaction to the sound of the music. The Allman Brothers have had many different lineups as far as members. Looking forward to your reaction to more Allman Brothers, especially when you hear Gregg Allman‘s vocals and keyboards on other songs. Love this channel Lee!!!

Thanks for posting the vid, ~~~ Tho I wish they'd given a bit of visual coverage to Berry on bass. He and the drummers are the backbone of the piece, and I don't think I saw him once. (By the way, as a kid, I had NO idea there *were* 2 drummers, they're so tight !!) ~~~~And then they launched right into "Whipping Post" !!

So you would like their live Whipping Post at Filmore East, 1970. One of my favorite groups growing up in the 60's and 70's. Duane was arguably the best slide blues/rock guitarist of them all. If i remember right he invented the glass slide using a broken bottle or something. Here's the jam: ua-cam.com/video/FUvxRjYqjEQ/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB what a show, improv and all. Thing that kills me tho is half the time Duane's killin it the camera is on someone else. Barry Oakley (bass) died around the time Duane did.
