The white drummer is Butch Trucks. He is the uncle of guitarist Derek Trucks. I encourage you to check out the Tedeschi-Trucks band. Derek is an incredible slide guitarist who is as close to a reincarnated Duane Allman as you’re going to find. Their band is absolutely great
The man who created and played the main lick on Layla. Such a fucking great guitar talent. Understandable that Greg wasn't ever the same after his big bro died.
Interesting fact, as was mentioned this song is named after a gravestone in Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon GA, it is now the final resting place for Duane, Berry, Greg, and Butch as well
My favorite version of a legendary song. The hype about this album is real. The Filmore version of Whippin Post alone is awe inspiring and for me, a seminal Southern Rock tune. Thanks for another great one Lee.
Modern technology could never sound better than this! Organic excellence at it's finest! RIP Dicky Betts who passed away a couple of weeks ago, and the rest of the band.
I got to 'see' them at Watkins Glen in 73. 600,000 people so couldn't get close but my 15 year old butt was blown away by all 3 bands. Mountain jam seemed to last forever! Such a place and time!
Elizabeth Reed born November 9th, 1845, died May 3rd 1935. Dickey Betts hung out at Rose Hill cemetery often to write songs. Wrote this song, saw this gravestone, and named the song after her. true story
The "Best Damn Band In All The Land"! The Brothers were hands down the best live band (every incarnation of the band was formidable) ever. The Brothers on a rare "off" night would still make others bands best nights pale in comparison. It was always about "hittin' the note". It does my old heart good to see younger generations appreciating the music and magic of The Brothers. Eat A Peach For Peace.
Best Blues Band ever. You can spend a month on all of their music, and still never get tired of it. Great stuff. "Whipping Post," "Soulshine," "Dreams," and about 50 more great songs. Greg and Duane Allman, Dickie Betts, Butch Trucks etc. All were great musicians. Greg's soulful voice and keyboards are top shelf.
Always love this on Live at the Fillmore, my go to jam. A little rock, jazz, fusion and blues makes a great song. Butch Trucks is Derek Trucks uncle. RIP Duane, Greg and Barry, thank you. Jim
Duane Allman may be the greatest slide/finger guitarist ever. You MUST check out Derek and the Dominoes "Layla" where duane just KILLS IT on slide, with eric clapton backing him up on guitar and killing it with his vocals.
This is, IMHO, their masterpiece. I learned the bass line from this song and Berry Oakley is a monster. That bass line is very athletic - it takes a lot of endurance to do it. This is my favorite piece by them.
Thanks L33 for reacting to possibly the most beautiful and haunting song of the rock era. In case you didn't know and/or no one else has mentioned it, Dickey Betts named named the song after a headstone he saw for Elizabeth Jones Reed Napier in Rose Hill Cemetery in the band's hometown of Macon, Georgia.
Duane Allman. What a player. Absolutely right near the top of the very best players of all time. Funny how he's known primarily - by some people - as just a great slide guitarist. He's even better without the slide.
Always loved this album! Was privileged to see them in concert on October 3rd in 1971. They had the drummers on risers behind the rest of the band. It was absolutely mesmerizing to watch them play! Sadly we lost Duane just 3 short weeks later. One of the best concerts, so amazing!
I am an old dude that whet to to many many concerts in the late sixties and seventies and as everyone else mostly on something. I love it when I see and listen to someone from a Completely different generation. enjoy.
I was 14 on summer vacation in Sarasota 1969. And heard they were going to play at the City Auditorium and I had never heard of them. They led off with Don't Want You No Mor/Not My Cross To Bear medley and I went off. I never sat down the whole night and nobody else did either. They were the best and gave me all of my "woman" lessons on top of it all.
The two drummer thing: I saw something amazing at a Joe Walsh concert at the Santa Barbara bowl in the early 1980s - as usual, Mr. Walsh had two drummers with him on stage with two full drum sets - as they were playing from OPPOSITE sides of the stage, they (Joe Vitale, his normal drummer and another guy) threw their drumsticks across the stage like jugglers with bowling pins, each while playing the song flawlessly! They did this for the ENTIRE song! I couldn't believe it, so I took my camera to the stage and photographed it - got the pictures back, and it was real! Too much!
You said “These boys can jam” The Allman Brothers were the original jam band. There are innovators and there are imitators. The Allman Brothers are the source.
Another two drummer group playing today - The Tedeschi Trucks Band with Derek Trucks, nephew of Butch Trucks, a phenomenal guitar player and Susan Tedeschi, an incredibly soulful vocalist and guitar player in her own right. Check their tour page; if they're playing anywhere near you go see them. Many videos online of course, check out "Midnight in Harlem"
IMHO Duane’s guitar solo in the Fillmore East live album version of this song is arguably the greatest solo. I recommend the studio version of Whipping Post next if you haven’t reacted to it yet. They have many great songs, including One Way Out and Statesboro Blues. I think their version of Stormy Monday (live Fillmore East album), is one of the greatest blues song of all time. The other great guitar player in this band, Dickey Betts, wrote the song Elizabeth Reed.
Allman Brothers band was like a perfect rock/ blues orchestra. The deluxe version of live at the Fillmore includes Mountain Jam which didn't appear on the original version, it appears later on Eat a Peach. Tom Dowd, engineer extraordinaire spliced two recorded versions of IMOER that provided the best possible version of it live. I believe the first section features Duane and the second section features Dickie. It is an awesome tune regardless of what one you're listening to.👍👍👍👍
Side 2 of Live at the Fillmore is perfection, Hot'Lanta, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Whipping Post. When I play it I Just let the whole side play and I'll just sit there with my eyes closed and vibe out.
That's it! The audio and video wasn't the best, but sometimes it's about capturing a moment in Rock history. If you want to go deep on the Allman Bros, checkout High Falls. It's another instrumental written by Dickey Betts. Chuck Leavell plays a 4 min keyboard solo that's sublime.
