I wanted to say thank you to the Betts family for sharing this great man with us. Just heard the news and a rush of emotion ran through my memory. I turned 65 last Friday and if you are my age you will have fond memories of this man and his contribution to the world of music through the Allman Brothers Band. Both technical and soulful he was the glue that held the band together after the loss of Duane. Godspeed Dickie….You will be lovingly missed.

I’m there with you brother! Born in ‘55 and had two sisters 4 & 5 years older who were all over the top 40 by 1960-61 and I was listening to all those 45’s when the Monkeys, Hermans Hermits, Beatles, Dave Clark Five(British Invasion) Animals, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Kinks, Steppenwolf, Who, Led Zeppelin and on and on! The Allman Brothers were one of my favorite bands through college ‘73-‘78! Blessed to have seen almost every group who came through Tulsa and OKC starting in ‘68 when tickets to a big named band was $10, smaller concerts were $6-$8 a ticket. That was three yards I had to mow in ‘69 and ‘70.

All of the guys in these "Classic Rock" era Bands (1960s 1970s) are at, or nearing the age when they are in their final years. I'm 68, and most of these guys were about ten years older than me when I was a kid listening to them. Sad, but life goes on, plus we have their great music and memories to enjoy.

It’s remarkable to me that the Allman Brothers not only survived the enormous loss of Duane Allman, in my opinion, one of the top three or four guitar players of all time, but continued to thrive with Dickey. With Duane and Dickey together until ‘71 they were incomparable, but they were still great as Dickey and Gregg carried them through. They were there own genre, the most soulful jazz improvisations I’ve ever heard. So much talent in every member and as a group, one of a kind. Thank you Nick for celebrating Dickey with the immortal “Jessica”!

I was only 13 when Duane passed so never saw the original outfit but saw them many times over the years, including their last run of shows at the Beacon in NYC. Dickey wrote some great songs. Damn! Another one bites the dust!!!😢
Loved Allman Brothers so damn much! They were my SECOND rock concert on June 8, 1972. The concert was part of thier "Eat A Peach" tour, which was the first tour following Duane Allman's tragic death the year before.
I was only 18, and turned 19 the following month. I went with 3 of my former high school girlfriends/chums. Somehow, on the walk from the overflow parking lot, to the coliseum entrance, I LOST MY TICKET. I didn't realize it until we got to the lawn area in front of the venue, where the lines were forming. Being the big baby that I am, I was standing there with my 3 friends, I'm crying and they are rummaging through their purses to try to come up with the $6.00 for a door ticket. (It was fesitival seating). Plus, the line for the door tickets was ridiculously LONG, and I didn't want them to have to wait for me after the doors opened, and we were trying to negotiate that scenario among us.......when Suddenly, a cute young male stranger came up and said he had an extra ticket he would give me! Thanks to the kindness of a Hippie Stranger, I got to see one of my first, and one of the BEST concerts of my life!! (actually, I think he ***might*** a ticket scalper, but he felt sorry for me.)
Dickey was just ON FIRE during that show. They all were. Dickey was almost completely responsible for getting the band to tour after Duane's death. Thank God he did that!!
"Time quickly passes by. If only we could talk again!"

A terrific song for a remembrance of the great Dickey Betts. A great band that is almost without rival. That’s also Chuck Leavall who formed the band Sea Level on that killer piano. You are correct that you recently heard a Bruce Kaphan cover on Steel Guitar. In my comments I said you needed to hear the original ASAP. So sad that he passed. Nothing compares to the original version. I was wanting to request it but alas. RIP Dickey Betts. ❤️❤️

In my original letter when I made the request, I said that you need to listen to the original ASAP. Unfortunately it had to happen under these circumstances.😥
I debated when I put that original Marathon together whether I should also include the original Jessica in it as well, but of course it’s a long song would not leave any room for Bruce. Oh well, a great reaction to a great guitar player. I’m sure you will get lots and lots of views.

As an Allman Brothers Band diehard fan the passing of my musical hero really hurt. All the tributes over the last few weeks have just shown how this man impacted people. He had a tone on his guitar that really was like no other. He could right beautiful songs and his instrumentals were masterpieces. The song Jessica was named after his daughter. He drew inspiration from Django Reinhardt on this instrumental. He also said Chuck Leavell probably could have gotten a writing credit because he brought the song to another level on his piano solo. Later on when they played this song it became more of a guitar song when Warren Haynes joined the band and later with Jack Pearson and Derek Trucks Dickey will forever be remembered as a legend. Play it loud for the Angels Dickey ! 🙏🍊🎸

I just looked up this song and found out what it's about. So cool. It's too long for me to write here, but everyone should look it up.

" I want to introduce to you my friends and your friends, the ones that are going to help me get elected along with you - the great Allman Brothers!" - Jimmy Carter, Providence RI Civic Center concert Nov., 1975.

Been an Allman Brothers fan since 1970. Duane once said that he was the famous guitar player, but Dickey was the better player. The acoustic guitar on this song is being played by Les Dudek. you should take a trip down Les Dudek Albums.

RIP Dickey❤😢❤Nick you have to do a lot of Allman Bros. So good. Whipping Post is my fav.❤I know how hard it is for you to pick the best song because it's really hard for me/us to pick one for you... I don't want to pick a bad one.❤ I just noticed your hair is getting long... love it!!🥳

Did you know, that one of the best guitar players - John Petrucci - plays an awesome cover of Jessica ? Live together with his wife at the European Guitar Awards in 2019, check it out here in youtube. John and Rena - almost as good as Dickey and Duane 🤘
In Memory of Elisabeth Reed of the Live At Fillmore East Album would have been another great choice - probably not only MY favourite Allman song 😆

Yeah I hate that fizzy high gain distortion used by shredders and metal wallies. It sounds as though they are shaking a can of gravel and mixing the sound into the signal.
