- Опубліковано 9 сер 2020
- Hard Light has its place in lighting, but in most cases that place is not on the face. Soft light is going to be your best bet for getting creamy/ flattering images out of your subjects. Here are 3 basic principles for achieving soft light for ya as you continue your cinematic journeys. The best part is you can use any light. Thanks as always for watching. I love you.

"As a man, that's not something I typically hear, but as a filmmaker, soft is typically a very. good. thing." hahahaha
Hahaha glad you appreciated that one
Dave Symonds ha!
@@DannyGevirtz Absolutely haha, and a much more casual, relevant, and tasteful delivery over the heavily played out 'that's what she said' territory.
Lmao genius
Honestly, people could use more softness in their lives in general :)
Lighting has always been difficult for me. It's definitely an art itself!
For sure man!
Your videos are like getting a nice hug from a friend, I already knew this stuff but I watched anyway because its just a super pleasant experience
Your humour cracks me up the whole time my god hahaha. The way you just calmly talk about bringing the moon closer for softer light, eventhough that doesn't make sense in so many ways
I was making so many mistakes (moving the light back for example.). Your guidance on light placement plus diffusion helped me to FINALLY have a nice soft light effect. Thank you SO much for this help!
8:27 That sentence is the BIGGEST advanced cinematography advice you can give to anybody. 👍👍👍 There are many "experts" out there that don't even know that. It's the inverse square law explained with an example.
For sure! Thanks man!
bro i swear! every time you post a new video i get sooo stoked to watch it! youre killing it bro!
Bruh...I’ve been binging your content all day! Had to hit that subscribe button! The tips are simple but extremely helpful.
I got to say that your videos are very inspirational. I just moved into a new city and that's my new motivation to be more creative and your videos really helped me . You are real, humble and an amazing filmmaker. Keep them coming, you have all our support!!!
I´m a filmaker beginner, and i bought my first light, to make my shots better. Thanks for the tips
very very helpful, Thank you!
Always the best tips! Thanks Danny!
Dope tips man! Mentioning the importance of the size of and distance of the light source really gives me more understanding of how lighting works. Will definitely try to get my softbox closer in my next UA-cam videos. Keep it up!
For sure man! Thank you!!
Just love this channel! I'm learning soo much. Thank you, Danny!
Super helpful and informative as always, thanks a lot Danny!😊
For sure! Thanks Visha!
Simple but so good. These videos have really been helping me. Can't thank you enough!

Great video Danny. None of this is new to me but I always enjoy your videos so I watched all the way through haha. Thanks for sharing bro!
Bro, I learned so much more about lightning from your channel than from some expensive courses! Thank You!🙏🏻
Learned a lot from this video! Thanks man
Love the vid man, can’t imagine all the work you put in just to show the different sets of light 😂💪🏼💪🏼
Great advice Danny. Thanks for these awesome tips
Thanks bro!!

It felt like you were reading my mind. I've been trying to work out how to light myself better, newbie to UA-cam. Thank you.
Love your content man! And I love the way you calmy explain things. It's quite soothing HAHA!
Haha amazing thanks man!
soft lighting explained by a big softy :) LOVE it.
Literally every time I think, "man I need to practice that more" you just hit us up with a stunning vid about it. Love you bro
Haha awesome. Thanks bro!
These tips and tutorials makes me want to buy a camera and get back to photography again! Thanks you! ❤️
This was really useful, will have to put this into practice
I always struggled to get my head around the concept of lighting and this video is honestly the BEST video I've seen on the topic. You explain everything so clearly and I feel like I've learnt a lot - keep up the amazing work!
I’m using a lamp and a paper so it is probably time to move on and get a proper softbox. Great video!
Dude, you are the best. Thank you very much
Thanks so much man!
I love your lighting tutorials... definitely one of the least talked about subjects on UA-cam
Thank you bro!
Love you Danny you really helped me a lot these past few weeks man, shits been rough and you truly helped me find the inspiration i've needed 🙌 your my new favorite filmmaker man your contents always the best
Thanks so much Jordan!!
Nice, just bought a 72" parabolic silver umbrella to bounce the light back, really like it, nice soft wrap and nice and big to wrap around the face.
Lol i don't know why i just love the way he so softly says "love you" 😂 love this guy.. plus "I'll have to wake up my dog from its nightmare" lmao
genius .. big support from Egypt
Thanks Danny for the info, years making films and never knew that as further you place it, the harder it gets. Love your content man!
Thanks so much man!
Great examples!
Great to recap the basics from time to time! :) thanks mate
Thanks bro!
Great Video! Thanks dude! I knew all the theories from different videos, but seeing it all packed in one video is just amazing. My talking head videos thank you very much ;)

Amazing man! Thanks!

Awesome thank you!!
Always learning! Well on my way to getting softer... lighting.
Hahah good luck on the softness
Wholesome/educational youtube to start my day!
Haha thank is Tom!
Great advice!
Why does that ending always hit me? I just got to the second video I’ve watched from you but I love you too man😂😂😂😂
Hahaha I’m glad it’s mutual man. Thank you
I need to learn ways of creating soft lighting better for documentary interviews, this was genuinely really useful
Defusion lesson cleared my confusions. Thanks Danny!
Amazing! Thanks!
The return of the backdrop!!
Great video! As usual! :)
Thank you man!
I look forward to Monday mornings lol. Soft light is the best. a couple of days ago I cut a shower curtain and a white bed sheet into 5x5 squares :D
Haha that def works bro. Thanks as always
❤️❤️❤️ Thanks
Great video man! I love the Muslin idea, utilized in "Cove Lighting" by Roger Deakins. His skins tons are ALWAYS on point he uses Cove Lighting alot.
Solid content, thank you! What’s your favorite way to gel your 120d?
Great video! My one added desire would have been showing side by side shots and even a 4 way shot of original hard vs soft vs bounced vs bounced and diffused.
you're such an inspiration to me!
That makes me so happy thank you!
Very informative as always.
Glad to hear it man! Thanks!
“I swear i didn’t just murder someone...” 😂
Hahaha I promise
You explain well and you're hella sympathetic as well. Would totally hang out with you every day.
AWESOMEEEEE
Love it! Thanks from germany!
Thank you man!!
Dang I just love your videos so much......
Haha thanks so much Chris!
Funny, positive approach, useful and practical info. Tnx from a beginner in this particular field 😎 useful stuff
Amazing thanks!
Hey Danny! Your videos are really informative and helpful, which is why I wanted to ask you to make a video on how to light a handheld/ moving scene. I'm just really curious about what your approach might be 🤔
Hey Danny! I got really curious about different types of diffusions (even tho’ you said you wouldn’t talk about their specifics). I had a video idea that might suit you: make a colab with a good gaffer or someone that really understands lighting in youtube, and help us understand the types of diffusion! I bet that both you and us as audience would get a lot out of your conversations! Great work as always, congrats
Thanks for sharing Danny! You're videos are inspiring me to maybe get back in the YT bandwagon and share my knowledge and experience. Your videos feel like talking to a friend.
Amazing brother. Thanks so much
If you are looking for more ideas... I would love to see more specific lighting scenarios or breakdowns. I have seen some few other channels do this and I always find that it helps me the most.
Cheers for the quality content.
Thanks Will!
This couldn't have come at a better time. I'm preparing to film a mini doc and most of it will be natural lighting, but this definetly helped out!
Amazing! Thanks!
I love a good book light set up, double diffusion is definitely worth the effort if you have the time =]
Loved the moon example haha
Another great lesson from the great Danny G 🔥🔥🔥I’m learning a lot from this channel more than those crappy B-roll youtubers.
Thank you man!!
Nice man, could you make a tutorial about lighting using natural light. Haven't seen one of those from your channel...only seen small parts of it
Very cool video! I just want to add a comment about why the closer the light, the softer; And it is because a bigger source of light will fill the shadows with light, the light will travel more even in the face (in this specific case).
Super helpful
Love to hear that!
More tips like these mate... Learned a lot 😃... Just want to struggle less with lighting a scene 😑.
Hey good video man....!!!!!
LOL@ Softer the better, as a man thats not something I typically hear. ROFL Love it! Great info Danny as always and your lighting is always spot on. Give Sansza a big pat for me. Love you Danny.
Hahaha I will man. Thanks brotha!
Love lights! Need more lights 😂
I would love to see some more comparasion between shown diffiusions.
Nice video Danny, Would you recommend a channel or website to learn more about lighting? How do you get inspiration and ideas?
Thanks!
Danny is the man! LOL at the murder joke and the soft is a good thing! Hahaha, I actually loved you kicking the light off the wall because it left the right side of your face nice and contrasty while also throwing some light on your BG.
Haha thank you man!
Very small differences but I love it, I need to learn diffusion. Just a question, how much would you care about Inverse square law on set and such other methods?
thanks for the tips man, what's the color of your paper for the background? is that gray or black one? i'm thinking of buying one with the stand.. thanks
Hey man, I just wanted to say I love you.
Love you too bro!
Love you too
Thanks man :)
Amazing!! As a UA-camr, I usually make videos at night with artificial light and it’s so hard to put the lights together lol
Would love to learn sound mixing from you!
Thanx for your insightfull tips on your channel. Very helpfull for me as a starter. But I as an audio- engineer have a tip for you as well. Your room has a nasty resonance at exactly 385 Hz which bounces on your voice. Very easy remedied wit a few absorbers on the wall. Makes everything a lot nicer to listen to.
I am a beginner. I tried adding a diffuser on my led panel but it is still not soft enough.. my video still has hard shadows. I should invest on the sheets youre talking about. thanks for the tip.
Thanks Danny for not using misleading "cinematic" in the title when its absolutely necessary. biggest pet peeve
Haha of course man! Thanks!
ty for heart danny
How are you liking that Nanlite softbox? I own the Forza 60w
Nicely
Haha thanks man!
I feel like this is really good advice for beginner filmmakers, but as we get better I feel like we should experiment and use hard sources more when appropriate.
