Spencer Sakurai is another increadible youtuber that doesn’t offer his shitty LUTS. He is an excellent cinematographer and made actually amazing videos in the past. You should check him out.
No one should watch these videos because that would just make too much sense! Instead, I would suggest one of those other channels with a minimum of 1 million followers and perhaps grab a Canon 1Dxiii on your way over there. hahaha
And here i was just thinking after watching Robs video, " This is only the 2nd time ive truly learned something of high practical value. The 1st was with Epic Light Media. lol. Great to see you comment here!
Man I really love that you show the whole lighting process and include diagrams... this kind of knowledge is invaluable. Keep up the great work man it really means a lot to us!
I just want to comment on the background music SO Good that it does not interfere with the fine tutorial content.... low volume "There but not there" So many of these just slap pre program music without thought ! I didn't just stumble on this video I've come back many times to reacquaint myself to the lighting technique ... not run and gun but good if the budget is there
Thank you! :) I'm glad the videos are coming off that way, I would hate for them to seem like there's only one specific way to use a technique - lighting is such a versatile thing with so many ways to tweak things and get different results!
I watched a video a couple days ago with someone talking about Deakins and the way he uses cove lighting and all I could think was man it would be cool to see a tutorial on this and voila opened up youtube today and here it is. Thanks for the video man
You have a very calm and easy to follow teaching style. Straight to the point, no filler, clear, and very easy to understand. Great work. Do you have any scenes of the Blackmagic micro with this lighting technique or similar lighting techniques?
Thank you, appreciate it! :) not this particular technique - but it would look pretty much identical to this - the Micro and 2.5k have a remarkably similar image!
I think you are singlehandedly teaching a generation of not just filmmakers but photographers also. This is the best channel I've run across on you tube.
So freaking good. Best explanation of a cove light I've seen. I'm amazed with what you can do with a couple of red-heads, cheap fabric and an 8-year-old camera. Very inspiring.
@@CaptainMyCaptain33 Exactly. Good lighting equalizes many cameras. If you provide enough light for the sensor, and control it properly, the differences become less apparent.
Just wanted to let you know this is by far the most informative and valuable lighting tutorial I've ever seen on UA-cam, been trying to figure out how deakins does his interiors for years and the results here look absolutely perfect.
Rob I must say this is some quality tutorials you have here. If you ever think of doing a masterclass on lightning you can take my money! You going places buddy keep it up !!
This is incredible quality. Brilliantly explained. You're voice over style means we're never taken away from what's important to be looking at. Well done Rob.
What I like about cove lighting is how it can shape scenes from a wide shot allowing for plenty freedom of movement and the close up work which helps matching shots, love the soft light it produces
@@RobEllisCinematographer agreed its the same problem I face is enough space to light stuff. Lighting is always a problem solving nature if anything it trumps most stuff, love the soft graduated look the cove gives just makes everything a little more yummy

I'm swamped at work right now but wanted to say that I came across your channel a few days ago and really want to commend your videos. Huge, huge fan because the visuals are done brilliantly and help bring it all home.
DUDE! Please keep these videos coming!! They’re so informative and educational! I really wish I could convey how much I appreciate your videos in a comment but man they’re awesome! Thank you!!
This is probably the best lighting tutorial I've ever seen. I need to work with cove lighting on my next shoot, and in 10 minutes I've gone from feeling trepidatious to excited about it. Thank you so much!

Wow, where was your channel until now?!? Great work man, immediately subscribed!
Superb vid! To the point and extremely helpful content without the usual overly produced and marketing hype filled kind of approach that is so prevalent these days. More of this kind of thing, PLEASE!!!
An addendum. Rob, having now spent sometime looking at a few other videos on your channel, and having read so many positive reviews from grateful viewers, how bout entertaining opening a Patreon account. If you continue putting out quality instruction like this you need a bit of compensation. What I have seen so far is like going to film school.
Thanks so much for the kind words Gregory, it's very much appreciated! And I think something like a Patreon might be on the cards, just seeing if the audience continues to grow! :)

Thanks again Rob. I'm not even into videography but photography but most of what you're talking about here is applicable to the world of stills. Great stuff and keep up the good work.
I can’t tell how priceless this seems to me. I am even ready for paid tutorials from you. Along with @Epic Light Media you are really taking the lessons to whole mew level. Glad to learn from actual and real cinematographers .👏🏻
Superb. I'll be showing this to my housemate who always argues with me when I say I want to light the scene as I want it to look and not 'light it bright' and then fix it in post with grading; I don't mind tweaking it in post but we've ended up with night time scenes, actually filmed at night (because it was a night scene) that look like daylight and no amount of grading was going to make the brightly lit room look like it was night!
Rob, just found your channel now. Wow, you have a real wealth of knowledge packed into these videos! Feeling very fortunate to have come across all this amazing lighting and production info. Thank you so much for what you have provided to those looking for more professional results.
I think you really found a niche that can boost your channel into star status. I just used this technique in a recent music video and love it! it's easy to setup, for me I used one complete sheet I didn't have time to cut it to 3 parts, however for full body shots I tend to block the bottom part because I didn't want the floor space to be lit, but for mid body shots this isn't needed. I didn't have arms, so I just used 3 stands and clips and it worked fine. Thanks a ton, I'll always use this now.
You have done the best cove light example I’ve seen on UA-cam. You have also have the best lighting I’ve seen from any UA-camr. Your lighting looks very close to Roger Deakins. Great job!
