Yeah glad you said the word “infinite”. Infinite possibilities, extremely mentally/computationally intensive. So many creative ideas linking to others, while others are being generated. 5:37 - huge, have to let the mind refresh and reshuffle everything you’ve queued up, then you somehow find ways through the impasse.
Spot on about Pre-Production man. I’m not a “spontaneous” creative, and dedicating literally 75% of the total time of a project to Pre-Production has skyrocketed the types of content I can produce. Continue inspiring us Danny 🥲
Bro I literally lived this. Pre production saved me hours at the editing stage vs when the client or myself didn’t have storyboards. It’s like night and day. Seeing the video completed before the cutting and adding is essential
You really don't know how helpful this video was, I'm in a rough spot at work right now and this video resonated very personally with me and my career path. Thank you Danny, your videos are very helpful and a source of inspiration.
I agree. Most important thing with editing is to just start and understand that even if you dont have an idea... in few minutes you will start getting ideas. You just gotta start it.
Great tips Danny. So simple but I think we easily forget stuff like removing distractions, turning your phone off, all these little things to help you get into the zone. That's always been the hardest thing for me. I can find the time, I can have the edit in my mind, I have all the shots I need, but it always takes me so long to get my brain into the headspace where I can enjoy the edit. I waste so much time thinking about how I'd rather be shooting, rather be lighting, rather be grading, all the stuff I really enjoy, when I'm actually just procrastinating and not doing the thing that I really just need to do: START THE DAMN EDIT!
I have been rockin' with my guy Danny since the D.A.R.E. T-Shirt days, love what you've been doing and getting to be inspired by you time and time again!
Danny really you're one of my biggest motivations! im watching all of your videos and I showed them to my girl and she immediately loved them. You're so talented, hard working and still humble and full of emotions. Thank you so much, I actually started golfing because of your video and I'll do my best to shoot a good one too! thank you! :)
Thank you for the kind message of everything does not have to be perfect to be put up, as long as the creator is proud of the work, it's worth to be posted.
Thank you for inspiring me. Creative blocks suck but I will listen to the amazing advice that you gave us! I love you, too. Thanks for being who you are!
I’ve been stuck with a video for weeks. All these tips make so much sense as I was staring at my computer feeling guilty for not being able to make progress for days. No social life. 😅 I finally posted it yesterday but next time, I’ll listen to every single tip here. ❤ Thank you so much Danny!
i always run into obstacles as far as being stressed when it comes to editing. the best solution for me is to walk away and come back to it another day. it definitely helps.
Kinda wish I had this video last week. I had a film project I was doing, and since I'm cheap and didn't learn how to use Premier Pro yet, I was using iMovie on my Mac. And oh boy, it was slow, and somewhat grueling, and just kind of sat in post-production hell. Thankfully, I have finished it, and the result is actually exactly what I wanted for my little project: A "so bad it's good" type film for my family. Thanks for all you do!
sometimes going with the flow of things can be hard, but learning to trust the process have help me with the pressure of getting the video how I intended it be.
Wow could not relate more to this video. Danny you articulated really well what the creative process is. I just finished editing a video for a client that I spent many hours on and I was feeling burnt out and what a breath of fresh air it was to watch this video and hear you say the same exact things I am going through! I especially like how you said there is an infinite amount of options in our storytelling when editing and an infinite amount of right answers. That does take the pressure off!
This short film was one of the most beautiful ones I’ve seen. The shots, music, sound design and of course the storytelling. I find it always hard to just start from an idea and build a whole story around it. Like here, Danny wanted to make a film about his dog, but how on earth do you make a good 20min film about your dog that has the audience hooked for the entire time and with a beautiful emotional touch? Not a lot of filmmakers are able to do this the way Danny does it, it all just feels perfect. I made a storytelling breakdown of the video because I wanted to better understand the choices Danny made to make the story so compelling. I did it simply by breaking the film down in what I felt were chapters, with their own vibe and purpose to drive the story forward, and I would like to share this. I don’t know if it’s exactly how Danny envisioned it, so I would be curious to hear from Danny how he broke his story down. Truly a masterpiece once again. Huge inspiration! Here is my breakdown: PART I: Who is Sanza? What makes her special? What are her characteristics? -> Interview Danny and Anna with archive footage of Sanza SET UP PART II: Planning trip. Where does “Labrador Retriever” come from? GOAL: Bringing Sanza to her home place Start trip (ferry) GOAL PART III: Why did Danny want a dog? Why Sanza? -> interview Danny with archive footage of Sanza -> archive montage when Sanza was a puppy => setting up connection between Danny and Sanza BACKSTORY (CONNECTION PAST) PART IV: First day in New Finland. Beauty shots Sanza and location. -> Sanza finding her own way: She is home. Proud parents -> feels important to be there Danny asking Sanza if she already feels home, and telling her they aren’t exactly there yet. CONNECTION (PRESENT) PART V: Enjoying New Finland -> family time Beautiful montage (Danny, Anna and Sanza) BUILD UP TOWARDS GOAL PART VI: Fulfilling the real goal of the trip -> bringing Sanza home and make her swim in the labrador sea Meaning of this for Danny and Anna => Sanza helps them appreciate every moment and make them happy by simply be together FULLFILLING GOAL PART VII: What do dogs mean for us humans? What do they teach us? => live as hard as you can and appreciate every moment MEANING
Just want to take a second and thank you for the knowledge you provide. Your content has impacted and made me rethink the entire way I look at cinema and videography. It’s a privilege to learn from you brother. Thank you
Hey Danny, can relate! I've filmed a short this summer but can't make myself edit it, because I hate it so much, every time I open my NLE I move a couple of shots around and shut it down. I know it's probably my warped perspective that I have to work on changing. Thanks for this video!
Haha I fee you. Sometimes if it’s at that point you just gotta say “screw it im finishing this tonight no matter how good it is”. Sometimes you just need it to be done
this video just looks so fucking good. All your shots are just so pleasing. This is a talking head video, so nothing spectacular, but it's just been done soooooo well.
Danny I'd like to request a video on Exposure, like how to expose videos correctly...I've realized that there's that magic touch on your videos and like 50% of it is affect by how you expose, or probably 90%..haha...Thanks a lot
For me, stepping away from the edit is equally as important as sitting in front of the computer. I have to do it at least 2 times a day to reclaim my sanity and re-find my flow. Don't be afraid to do this ya'll! 30 minutes is recommended as a minimum, but the longer the better!
Damn feels so good that you guys are going through the same process. With all fallbacks and challenges. Your tips really helped me… you worded it so precisely and this video helped me visualise what I am from time to time struggling with. Thank you for the great work you’re doing and all the content you’re putting out there! Stay safe! Love from Germany
"There should be an infinite number of 'right' or 'correct' outcomes for your edit." That's a life lesson right there, one that can help perfectionists like me to get unstuck 🙏
Thanks for the tips, Danny! 🙏 I've really been struggling with this recently and thought it was due to my inexperience. It definitely helps knowing that even the pro's struggle with editors block! 🙂
I swear this is the biggest problem with all editing platforms right now! Can’t get it to look like it did when you edited it, similar to the color export issue
Are you viewing your exported footage on VLC? Because you should be. If you are using something like quicktime player on Mac, your footage will look different than it did on your editor timeline
Thank you for this. Its more of an issue when uploading to youtube. I know UA-cam compresses a lot but my footage never seems to look as crisp as others using the fx3.
I am supposed to edit my 2nd film today but my ideas are not coming out and I'm beginning to doubt myself. Thanks for this. ❤ Now I know that this is normal. 😂
Editing is such a battle at times. I don't have ADD but it feels like it when I edit. I can be all over the place. And that's usually because I didn't do enough pre-pro. So weird because I KNOW this, yet frequently skip that step. And then I hate myself afterwards. Sign of insanity. Or stupidity. Maybe both. Thank you for this. Just makes me feel...normal. Mostly. 😏
Damn, it's so obvious to just, shoot the "coverups" I always spend hours searching stock footage and restructuring my whole edit to fit the only somewhat relevant stock footage I could find, where I could have just actually spend the time to shoot some shots and avoid the mind-cluster-depressions-anxiety-procrastination phase haha.
SFX and I can use artlist on any project. With musicbed even with my subscription I had to pay a ton of extra money for it to be in my movie and that bothered me a lot
Thanks for your vids! Do you have something like a Patreon or other way I can better support you directly? The work you do and share is incredibly inspiring and I’d love to continue to help support your work, as you’ve been an amazing resource to help me learn and grow.
Can i please use a part of what you are saying here? That last bit about posting something is better than nothing. I'll credit your name for sure. But i don't have any money to pay for that precious words :')
Super helpful especially during a current edit I'm working on. Another thing that helps is to have clear steps of what needs to get done. For example, don't start sound design and color until after the picture is locked. Sometimes I lose hours playing around with grading when I haven't even pieced the edit together! 🥲
organizing my selected footage into separate timelines has sped up my workflow considerably
Gotta clear everything, that’s a huge one! 🔥
Yeah glad you said the word “infinite”. Infinite possibilities, extremely mentally/computationally intensive. So many creative ideas linking to others, while others are being generated.

Thank you man!
The intro statement is so accurate - so many different outcomes

Yup. Love the simple and concise tips. I have a hard time watching so many UA-camrs with their flashy/distracting videos, this is it.

YES! PRE-PRODUCTION. Say it louder for the people in the back! The single most important part of every project.
