I make short films with my friends and local artists. Most of the actors are black, and ive found I prefer lighting darker skin tones. When you get it right, it just looks so rich.
This has just saved me soooo muccchh on a project that im currently shooting. It feels like this video was talking directly to me, lol. I definitely need to do some reshoots, I really appreciate you for taking care of us and steering us the right direction. 🙏🏽
This is super helpful! This reminds me of the @DSLRvideoshooter video of how to light people who are bald and people with glasses. We NEED to have all these tools in our belt to serve our customers.
Honestly man, this video is a life saver. I have a shoot with the Chicago sky this week and I’ve been painstakingly trying to find these tips myself. Appreciate you!
The perfect follow up to your video on exposing darker skin tones with Slog3. The polarizer and color temperature tips blew my mind. Can’t wait to practice some of these techniques.
Thank you so so much for putting this video together. I hit a plateau with my look within my channel, and this video alone just reignited my passion for a new set up in my studio. I’m binging all your videos and you are a godsend. Thank you so so much brother nothing but love and blessings to you. 🫡🙏🏽🤜🏽🤛🏽
Kofi, thank you for this! Also magnificently melanated - I'm working on my own lighting for my YT videos / content, and these tips just served as a checklist that I'm on the right path. Appreciate this! Would love to see your process on color grading darker tones. Thanks again!
This was SO great! Thank you for making this video! I’ve been watching dozens of videos about lighting and was really struggling with how it looked on my camera, then it clicked, I’m watching all white guys 😂 I will be applying what you’ve taught and I hope it helps. Thanks again!
this all day! ive had some crazy experiences on the set of some commercials a bit ago. some ppl nail this ... some ppl dont. Issa Rae, Ava DuVernay, and Oprah hit it out the park. lemme not forget Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) annnd shout to Hype Williams bc "Belly" 💥 the lighting in that took it to a whole new level... definitely painting with light
Dope tutorial! Playing with color temp is something to consider! Yeah I've heard about the crew on the Insecure show using CPL's on dark skin tones to cut on skin hot spots. I'm looking at the 200x vs 300c for a rim/effect light to add to my 600d 300dii set. Good to see these perform with a light dome ii
Solid tips. I usually set my key a bit warmer as well. I’ve never used neg full on dark skin but I will try it. I normally use the glimmerglass 1 but I like the 1/8 you have
Really good video. question how did you decide in the kelvin for your key light. You did not go with the kelvin from outside. Can you explain why you choose a different a different Kelvin.
Thank you very much , Kofi. The tutorial is priceless, especially the CPL. Do you think using a light meter could also be useful? I’ve tried an app that estimates the appropriate ambient Kelvin too. Using both information has been useful. What are your thoughts? Thank you.
Hey - you should make a video on lighting for mixed skin tones. I had to film a bi-racial couple and it was extremely challenging as she was quite white and he was fairly dark. I ended up keeping the lighting dark so her skin didn't blow out, but I had to mask him in post and bring the exposure up some. How would you handle this situation?
Love all your content and what you are doing g for the culture. I’m not a Sony shooter but I would like to ask a question. How would you go about stacking a circular polarizer with a black satin filter and VND? Everything spins 😂. Is it best to use flat filters
This is a great video... can you make one that helps us broker POCs that only have a smart phone figure out lighting? Also... maybe dumb down the language a bit because I don't understand any of the words you're saying lolz.
I would not recommend using circular polarizer for removing highlights of skintones. It generally looks unnatural. Just make sure to have the key light be softer
Broo at times make things simple.. and try somethin with a single light setup... not everyone can afford 2 amaran Lights.. starts soundin like A show off...
@@KofiYeboah Now.. from a Bro to another bro in Darkskin.... im a Canon Shooter recently got. my R6.. want to know cant be shooting Weddings with a grey card and etc.. how can i expose for Dark skin and lightskin using In camera settings like zebras. One of a kind tutorial with priceless info for upcoming videographers like us where 101% of clients are black people. Love from Kenya.

Ahah sounds more eloquent ☺️
This was literally a google search I did last month. I feel like the negative fill looks so much better than the bounce. This was great!

is that 45' on either side of the face or specifically the right side of the face?
