I'm just glad there are so many ways to go and see and hear the Grateful Dead's music live/in-person. Dead and Co is just one avenue which I had a blast seeing them four times in 2022 and couch touring a bit of 2023. I get it's not other people's thing. Nothing will replace the OG Dead. But it's nice to witness other people's interpretation, like yours Davvy. I like what you do with the music.
It's when other people get on me about the only reason I like Dead and Co is because I missed out on Jerry and it's my way to "cope" with not being alive to see the OG Dead. I fully understand that Dead and Co is not the Grateful Dead, it's more of an offshoot. I just want to see some of my favorite musicians get together and play some of my favorite songs. Maybe I don't mind Mayer much cause I'm a fan of his playing style and his inspirations, like B.B. King. If you are not a fan of his playing and/or singing, that's your taste.
If it's not your thing, it's not your thing. Totally understandable.

This is why I personally try not to bag on music. I went through the whole touchhead era where you were not a legitimate Deadhead if you were drawn in by the touch of gray album. Now some of those touch heads are gatekeeping because they actually saw the dead with Jerry. I feel bad when people feel guilty for liking Dead and Co. Be proud. Be happy. Keep the music alive. In ten or twenty years people will be gate keeping about how they saw Dead and co. While Bobby was still alive. The Dead’s music is timeless. It will be played on mars someday. Perhaps even in a hotel there.

I appreciate so much that you took the time to respond to this - and led off with my comment. You're the man and your response is so great - also didn't mean to insult you with the kid comparison. I absolutely do the same thing sometimes - was just meant to say "sometimes preconceived notions impact how we feel about something", not mean you are a child! Sorry for that. I feel confident if we discussed in person we would be on the same wavelength and totally get each other - unfortunately words through a screen sometimes convey an unintended tone or something we don't mean! This response confirms even more that I will be here for the long haul.
Your point later in the video about skipping over is spot on for me - I loved that you point out the good parts, but I also know I’m gonna react somewhat negatively to some parts and know you don’t dig D&C so might as well spend more of my time with the videos where the views mean more for you and we’re gonna vibe more.
I’m also realizing part of the reaction I’m having is a lot of blues songs served the same role for me that Dead has for you - the old stuff especially (and I hated Mayer’s stuff until he became more of a blues man). That’s part of my reaction for sure. Lots to think about.
    Much love.

My first Dead show was 8/6/74 which has never been topped for me. I go to D&C and Billy when they come to town because I cannot pass that experience up. I pass on Phil. Mayer can be adequate. I look at every show through Jerry’s eyes.. what would he think if he just looked down…’what’s this? … who’s this guy? Wow, wish I could do that! Ugh, end the song… etc..’. Jerry’s critical voice goes through my head all night, sometimes he is won over, sometimes not. Same with me.

DAVVY - Post#1 I'm going to post a few times here, because I'm feeling chatty and I think you are great. 100% agree with everything you said (doesn't mean we're right 100%), but seriously, everything. You are a rare Deadhead. You understand if something can be good it must also have the potential to be not-so-good, or frankly, BAD. First some context...I love a lot of artists...Willie Nelson, Motorhead, Osees, John Lee Hooker, Dylan (mostly 70s onward), The Grateful Dead (obviously), and the list goes on. Saw 50-60 bands perform over the last 10 years, mainly small venues. Saw the OG Dead as a teen from 92-95, but was a fan before having been introduced to them through friends of my older brother and my friend's crazy mom. I was and am still not a guy that might look like a Head. Nearly bald, buzzed hair with a beard and I wrestled and played football. That said, my one of my best, lovely, awesome friends was a supreme stoner and looked the part, but isn't so much now (think Dazed & Confused -movie). I was later BLESSED to have DSO play at The Canopy in Urbana IL when I was in college at U of I. Such a thrill. Musically, truly, those early DSO shows were BETTER and more inspred than the half dozen Dead shows I saw outside of maybe one at Rosemont, Spring '94. The last show at Soldier Field wasn't a good one outside of the end and the fireworks. Sure it was cool, and I was young, and my gf was cute, and my friends were awesome, and it was the thing to do...but that had little to do with the performance. Honestly half the people were just there for the scene, but that's ok. And that's my point folks...the vibe and the scene and your energy is one thing and the music definitely connects to that, but sometimes if you close your eyes or hear a recording later, it's just not happening or maybe it's just not your cup of tea. Like, I love sauerkraut, but you hate it. 😊

Your skill of arguing your points almost had me completely in your corner and not wanting to hear John Mayer again, but I am settling back into my previous completely neutral opinion of him. I just like Grateful Dead music so much (been listening since probably about a 14 yo back in the 90s), that I will enjoy any good cover band playing their music live today, so long as they are at least musically gifted. Going to see Cosmic Charlie in about a week and I've never heard them before. Going to see Grateful Shred in May. I love hearing all of the different interpretations. Enjoyed both of your videos, though!

Ok…you ranked the dead albums(yawn) now it’s time to answer the eternal dead question….what is the best show ever!! If you want to see hatred toward you(Popcorn please) then start talking about shows that might be as good if not better than Cornell. I listen to 4-24-78 way way way more than I do Cornell. Would love to hear your opinion of this show and what dead shows you like
Lastly, please do a review of this dead cover….type in UA-cam “songs of their own #26 throwing stones west end blend. “ smokes.
    Keep on keepin on Davvy.

you hit a couple very important points in all this:
    1. In the case of the Grateful Dead, it's about the music, not the people or the celebrity. Same goes for D&C. Who cares if it's John Mayer or Oscar Mayer playing these songs. It should always be about the music. If you can more about what Jerry was smoking or who Bobby was fucking or what Mayer is wearing, accept your priorities as skewed apart from the music.
    2. When you make it personal, as in saying, 'I don't like XXXX' instead of 'XXXX isn't good', you're doing it right and if someone is offended, sorry. That's on them, not you. Opinions are best when spoken about from the individual and not as generalizations that someone expects everyone to possess.
    Done.
    3. If you're basing your opinion on what you say Jerry would or wouldn't do or accept, you just lost your credibility. Unless you are Jerry Garcia resurrected. Your assumption is not his opinion.

Here’s my take (which really doesn’t matter to anyone but me).
Your opinions on DnC: I pretty much agree with you. I’ve always said that JM is a great guitar player. But I don’t like his style. And I can’t stand his “Tom Waits wannabe” vocals either.
Your guitar playing: Much like my opinion on JM, I think you’re an amazing guitar player. But yeah, too fast for the songs you’re playing. But that’s just it, that’s your thing, not mine.
I get a bit of grief because I’m a Deadhead playing bass in a Black Metal band. But whatever, it’s not their life. It’s mine.
Keep doing what you do bro! 😎

I never saw the Sugaree reaction, but now I think I have to., just to hear you play over the top. I know I'm in the minority, but Sugaree was never one of my favorite Jerry songs to begin with. It never really did anything for me, and I'm a huge deadhead. Saw them over 50 times. I do think Dead and Co got much much better in 2023. Something seemed to click. John and Jeff have developed a real chemistry, and Oteil has finally pushed himself much more into the mix, rather than staying back and letting John and Bobby run the show.

    • @JB-Deadskins
      @JB-Deadskins Місяць тому +1

Lol, I just went and watched the video. I totally agree with you about hating the stupid bullshit he does with his hands when singing. It's like he's trying to show how emotional he is about the music, like he's in a boy band or something. I think he's a great guitarist, and the best fit for the band of any of the replacement Jerrys. I'm not saying he's technically the best, just that his style is the best fit. But I hate the fake way he sings. Just sing the song straight, and stop with all the scale changes.

Man, you nailed it. For me It's using "Dead" in the name that makes Dead & Co total BS. It's a cash grab. Hey Dead and Co in the early days when they stayed in the blues lane were screaming. Love to hear some cold rain and snow, easy wind and a handful of other tunes like next time you see me, it’s great. However JM just doesn’t have the vocabulary or background to do the quintessential Jerry thing which is more grounded in folk, standards and old time country. Not that it’s bad it’s just a different thing. The coolest thing about DeadCo was seeing all the old heads gather once again. The scene was pretty fun for five minutes till the hordes caught on and it went corpo which kind of rubbed me the wrong way. For example I don’t think Jerry ever would have allowed the vacation shows, that only wealthy people can attend, Deadheads the originals were street people all are welcome but at 10k starting prices that aint the case. Anyway Davy your a very magnanimous guy and I appreciate that, I mean your no Obama but sometimes you have to let adult children throw their tantrums and walk away empty pocket, zero F’s. Anyway player appreciate you till you better paid.

It is crazy that people think if someone doesn't like Mayer singing Dead music its because he doesn't do it like Jerry. I think to a lot of us his voice is just annoying as shit no matter what he is singing. If he soaks your panties that is fine, bring an extra pair. But it's not some universally loved phenomenon. The thing I personally want from my favorite musicians is authenticity, something I feel Mayer lacks. His breathy weird Texas twang thing is just. not. real. Every time I hear his voice I think of that scene in Get Hard when he sings some super cringey song and he turns to Will Ferrel before the song and whispers "Hey wanna see a room full of women all get wet at the same time?" that line in that movie nails it.

Post #3 - Mayer is not my cup of tea although I greatly appreciate him being him, and doing his thing although I don't really dig it. Could I hang out with him? Sure, he's a dude, I'm a dude. Two beers! He's popular and that's why I think Bob digs him, because Bob is equal parts cool and fool like most of us. Not all of us are Zen master wizards like Hunter, and Phil, and Jerry on stage (off?? not so much..read Blair Jackson's fair but REAL book "Garcia"). I wouldn't want Mayer McCheese to date my sister or daughter. He's a sappy dreamy 6'2 Chad. He's a true player that has and continues boink all the babes, seriously. All the IT girls crawled in the sack. Although, gotta say, as a red blooded American male, Jessica Simpson was a cozy lookin' babe when they dated. His schmoozy boozy take on the Dead ain't my thing. Jerry had that soul. That's the goods. Adios.

Many people have become very fragile in recent years. I agree with you but wouldn’t stop watching if you loved DnC. Furthur>DnC imo. I usually lurk but i had to throw you some love in a whiny reddit post earlier and figured I would here too.

John Mayer can play well, but not a "Theory Master without ego" As for you Davy I knew you were younger than I, with that said I only was able to see Jerry from 90-95, not the greatest era, but that being said it is better in person. I heard you do I'll take a melody, I would much rather hear you than that breathy voice of Mayer any day. just my opinion. As for the guy who spoke of ego, well a John Mayer cover band would be a much simpler task. They are called wedding and bar mitzvah bands.

Post #2... Saw Dead and Co. at Alpine Valley later part of last decade with friends. Horrible, lackluster performance. Even my OG bud from back in the day begrudgingly agreed. Still had fun with friends. Saw Dead and Co. at Wrigley last summer, came in open-minded and a little high. Music was better (maybe drummer change, although I will always love Billy). Beautiful day, and go Cubs! Closer was perfect, for me, with US Blues. Listening to show afterward...meh, really meh. I hope folks have fun at The Sphere as the whole thing innovatively screams the Dead, but the scene in Vegas doesn't feel like the seedy, sketchy, dirty, rusty station wagon, $2 bucks-to-your-name Dead scene I grew up with, and fell in love with. I love the Dead so much I have self-imposed sabbaticals to ensure I don't ruin it and that I also grow and live and discover other music. I have been rewarded by doing so. 😊

I don’t delete comments, brother. It’s possible that UA-cam flagged it. I’m not sure, I don’t remember your comment.

UA-cam has been pretty bad with that lately. I personally find the longer of a comment I leave the more likely it is to be deleted. I think they are using a new AI moderator.

Throughout the video you make several references as to why you don’t like Mayer which are usually subjective opinions and you acknowledge that. However at 26:01 (26:03 you make a personal attack on the commenters English skills. Your “no personal attacks” pedestal is crumbling) you make a quip implying that he has a big ego based on interviews you’ve watched. This leads me to believe you have done the same thing many other people have done which is: heard him in the beginning of his career, labeled him the “pop guy” and because at that moment he didn’t align with your tastes you wrote him off. Now, I am admittedly a big Mayer fan and he’s the reason I like Dead music now, but I’ve spent literal years watching everything he’s done; interviews, podcasts, instagram lives, etc. and found that while yes, in his younger days, how was a bit arrogant, he has since mellowed out significantly and even acknowledges his past self as being too much. If you want to say you don’t like D&C because the vibe or sound isn’t what you’re into that’s fine, but maybe there IS a bit of bias in your opinion based on you having preconceived notions about Mayer because of his past, but people are capable of change. As for the dead spec. being a money grab or making the music a “commodity” I’d argue it’s what people want for the most part. People are inspired by this man to pick up a guitar, myself included, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to use the things your heroes use and inspire you with. Part of this is all make believe in our heads, and if dressing the part, or having the same gear gets you closer to having a great experience playing the music then so be it. Congrats you did it cheaper for yourself, but ultimately that guitar wasn’t meant to be marketed to you given your stance on Mayer to begin with.

Most of the very few shows I went to were Dead and Company. I never got to see them with Jerry. My first show was The Dead at the Spectrum in Philly, right before it was demolished to make way for whatever is there now I forget. Of course they played Samson and Delilah.
I wanted so much to like Dead & Company. I tried so hard. I had some good times at the shows I did go to, and I got to take my daughter to one when she was two & a half. We ran into friends of mine who brought us down on the floor to their seats and my daughter fell asleep in my lap, wrapped up in my hoodie, about halfway through Dark Star. I saw them on acid and totally sober. All that was great, but the way they played the music just didn't do it for me. Seems like they got a lot better towards the end.
If I couldn't cover Grateful Dead songs without being able to play the song better than them, I'd be in deep s***. Kind of how I eat.
You don't like blues? In the immortal words of Howlin Wolf, "You wrong..." 😆
It seems like dead & company went neoliberal. I 100% agree with you that music is for the people. Music should be holy.
