Even though megabases are a great concept, smaller things can be just as engaging. Zed with his zedvancements. Cub with Total Chaos and now with the museum. Bdubs with crastle and minigames. That's all great content and it often feels more relatable because I, as a viewer, have a feeling that I might as well try to do something of the same scale. Not so much with megabases

Don't try to recreate the scale of total chaos. Just crafting those dispensers would do me under, never mind all the powdered snow!

@@l.c3994That's when you install the Vanilla Tweaks datapack which makes it so that, instead of being a bow inside a dropper recipe, crafting a dispenser is a dropper inside a bow recipe. Then, all ingredients are stackable!

I’ve never fancied the mega base concept. Enjoying a game and making quality content doesn’t mean outdoing yourself. Bigger is not always better.

What always bugged me that many megabases of the hermits are just huge fassades, empty shells with a chestmonster inside, and most of the time not even close to finished whem the season ends, and sometimes declared finished whilst it is definetely not that. Burnouts and repetitive content with an enormous off-camera stress factor to make that repetitiveness to entertaining content are at the base of that procedure. And when the world downloads come out, there's not much to explore, since there is nothing to interact with.
Also a problem are the very abrupt season endings, I have no problem with long seasons, they do not make interactions more boring, but because of the access to resources could result in really amazing events, as proven in season 6 with the civil war, season 7 with the majoral election, and now season 9 with some of the big community projects coming closer to becoming finished. Which brings me to the next thing I don't like about hermitcraft. When the projects of the season are done, like a the same second, the new season starts. I remember so many minigames and stuff to explore that never got the attention it deserved. You don't need progress to have fun! And others don't need to see progress to like the videos!
And then there is cubfan. None of the top things apply to this madman.
After all these things I would like to mention that I am really addicted to the server and its members, been there since from the beginning of season 6 from grians perspective (from whom I first heard of the server), but soon followed the content of more and more others. Season 8 was the most extreme one to me, I watched like every single episode 16-18 hermits. Now I am in the very unfortunate position of liking to many hermits, I have to decide which ones I can follow for the upcoming season. But since my spare time is quite limited, I don't have a choice, it makes me sad.

So to be clear here, making sure I'm understanding: Nothing is happening to HermitCraft itself, and you're not leaving HC, you're just cutting back on HC content moving forward to give yourself more time for yourself, time for things you want to do and content you want to make that you can't currently with HC taking up so much of your time.

What I see after watching a lot of different creators, is that the joy of figuring out the game with viewers is replaced by creating the most amount of content in the smallest amount of time. For me Grian and Keralis is an example of this. Grian in S6 took us along on a journey where we almost builded with him, while now we're just bystanders during a timelapse. I saw the same with Keralis duing S1-3 of Cities Skylines. I think this is what is "killing" the creator, and ultimatly HC. I hope HCX will take baby steps again, and the storyline will unfold itself.
With that out of the way, I think what is important other than having money to pay the bills, is to create for yourself, not for others. Play what you want, and take those who want to join along with you.

To be honest I don't find the big builds that epic anymore. And having a cool build in a thumbnail isn't even that big of a pull anymore.
A much bigger pull is... I dunno... spawning 10,000 chickens with dispensers! I think if X wants to content hermitcraft he needs to think of ideas to be time efficient rather than a big build that lets be real takes 100s of hours to get resources for and then 100s of hours to design in creative and build for a 20 second timelaspe. You can still make content that will get views without a big build.

I legit can't stand the time-lapse thing being in every video. I hate watching gaming videos where the video is the product and not the game. I pretty much only watch Doc and Zedaph and Tango regularly at this point. Doc brings you along for the whole ride. Zedaph does that interesting stop motion style for time-lapse type stuff but most of his video is the zedvancement which is a cool concept. Tango Im watching bc decked out rofl.
I'll watch others occasionally. But you can tell most people are creating for UA-cam, not for the viewers. Not for themselves.

Good for you Xisuma. Doing somethign for 10+ years is a really long time. And being honest with oneself if something is still the thing they need or want to do, takes some serious introspection. I see other Hermits that take really long hiatuses like Hypno, Stress or Iskall and no one knows if and when they come back. my impression is they are way happier doing other things like Vaulthunters or other modded stuff. Especially Iskall who even made anouncement videos and promises to come back soon and make regular HC content again and... nothing.
I know every single one of you will always have a home on the HC server whenever you want to hop on. But putting yourself first and being honest with yourself is the most important thing. There is no real obligation.
HC, imo is strong enough to keep going for a good long while because it's not individuals, but a really strong group. And every individual on there can afford to take a step back without messing anything up.

There are so many creators out there with incredibly impressive videos but I only watch a few because of their personality and the atmosphere they create. I find myself enjoying videos much more when the creator themselves are genuinely happy with what they do! A fairly recent example of that would be mumbo (after coming back from his break and feeling much more refreshed). I've loved his newer videos and I could feel the excitement through the screen. That contagious, genuine enthusiasm is what makes it for me and it's difficult to watch someone when they are pushing themself to do something they don't necessarily want to do (whether it's the thing itself or the scale at which they are doing it) So ultimately I think you should create what you want to create, find the right balance, and really allow yourself to do what you want to do.

This reminds me of some things Mumbo said when he took his hiatus near the beginning of HC S9 - like he started doing Minecraft videos when he was a teenager so he's basically been doing this his whole adult life. I can't directly relate to that but it made a lot of sense to me, I could empathise. If you feel like it's maybe time to spend more time pursuing other things, that makes sense. If you want to use your success in UA-cam as a starting point to help build an audience for other things you want to do, that is valid, and it makes sense to do it while you have that kind of leverage with an audience. People will be invested, they won't want change, and you, having invested so much into the direction you've been going, may feel a need to stay the course, but you are obligated neither to your audience nor to your own "sunk cost".
Do what you gotta do, man. Do what's right for you.

One way that you could manage it is to take the same approach as Bdubs did with Limited Life, where he played for fun but didn't record / broadcast the sessions. Yet we still got to enjoy plenty of Bdubs content, because he made sure he was featured in everybody's videos. You could try playing a season of Hermitcraft in this way - playing for fun, but maybe getting the other Hermits to visit your base regularly or include you in events, so that we still see that you're a part of the world even if you're not broadcasting your specific POV. It could actually end up being more productive this way, as you'd have more time for playing instead of spending the time in the editing suite, so you might achieve more whilst still having time to balance something else like your music.
The other alternative is to maybe run the next season of Hermitcraft where everybody pairs up with a buddy and bases together, like we've seen in the past. Pair up Hermits who have lots of time with those who have limited schedules. For example, this worked before with Doc & Ren, Joe & Cleo, and Iskall & Etho in Season 8.
Bases also don't need to be epic structures that take weeks to build. The idea of the "Mega Base" is synonymous with Hermitcraft, but it doesn't have to be that way. Bdubs in Season 7 started off by building a medieval village of smaller structures that could be built quickly, but together they formed a larger build that looked impressive and had a story to it (granted, he did eventually cap it off by building a mountain and a castle, but that's Bdubs for you). Basically what I'm saying is, it's OK to make small builds. The content is just as fun to watch with the commentary, and eventually they make up a larger project, but is technically always in a state of being finished.

I think there's a lot to be said about Minecraft as a sustainable content creation platform. As I get older, going into college and stuff, I realize more and more that Minecraft takes a LOT of time to make something you are proud of, especially in survival, and that's assuming that there aren't other games you also want to play and commit time to.
It seems really like the people who can make things that they are proud of in this game tend to be people who do it for a living, either that, or people who don't have as many other interests, and they can devote a huge amount of their free time to it. It feels hard to justify the amount of time playing compared to the what you get out of it.
Then layer on that even should you make some beautiful builds or contraptions, a lot of it is in the usability and shareability. I can build a village, but for who? It will be devoid of anything that is living or emulates characters. I think this adds another barrier to entry, and is another reason why I think that people who make content around the game, play with others, and get to commonly share it are the only people who are getting fulfillment out of the game.
I think the game in general can be very grindy, taking hours to get the resources you need. That is assuming you have the materials near you. Half the time, to get all the wood types, or to get SAND, you have to travel THOUSANDS of blocks and spend hours and hours looking for resources, with no guarantees you will actually find what you need unless you use external tools. While I love exploring, things being absurdly spread out is a barrier that I feel doesn't pose a stimulating challenge, but just one that is tedious. Walking thousands of blocks is not an experience where I am learning, or seeing things I haven't seen before.
I grew up on Minecraft. It is part of me. But man, it's hard to justify playing it, despite how much I love building. Creative mode exists, and that's a great band aid, but it isn't the same. If I feel this way, I can see how doing this grind for a living can be extremely tiring and not stimulating creatively after several years. I think its a game that in it's design promotes burnout and is even otherwise hard to justify playing.

I think you just have to remember that doing what makes you happy is also “productive.” If the only thing you’ve had out of the day is a smile and a good frame of mind, that’s still a good day. Sure, you need to do things that will put food on the table too, but it doesn’t matter how much money you have if you’re not happy. Just don’t push yourself too hard and don’t let your life be dictated by your work. That’s when you’ll stop enjoying what you do and make it harder and less fun to create the content. If you can spot when you’re getting too caught up in work, you can then action that. Be it taking a day (or a few) off, or just reducing hours for a bit, it’ll help massively

I'm a visual artist, and I've been struggling with the same mind-battle for the past 5 years :C Really sucked the fun out of creating, I can't imagine how strong the feeling is when it's fueled by something as finicky and grindy as youtube. (and if I might say, something like an 'alternate hermitcraft experience' focusing outside of the regular resource grind and base building, is very intriguing to me. )

when i think about hermitcraft i don't see something that needs to always be bigger, more intense, or more novel--the beauty of hermitcraft is kinda baked in. it is the people and the community, the interactions. and that is where i see hermitcraft as being something other than just minecraft. i only got into hermitcraft a little over a year ago. i began watching season 7 and watched, on average, about 6 hermits all the way through seasons 7, 8, and now 9. once i got caught up i went back to watch season 6 and i learned something about hermitcraft. in the beginning of season 6 i can see how it was more of a show about minecraft, but then something happened (quite possibly grian happened--as he does). from that point onward, it became something else, its own unique thing. honestly, hermitcraft doesn't need to be anything more than it is and i would continue to watch, quite possibly, for the rest of my life, yet because of what hermitcraft is, even if minecraft itself didn't change, i suspect hermitcraft would always continue to evolve into something new, not because of top-down methods, but because of bottom-up chemistry. i love and appreciate all that you guys do, which ever way any of it goes.

It's so interesting as a later-starting viewer to see how hermitcraft has changed since season 5/6. I think one of the first episodes I watched was Mumbo looking at an old creative world where he had tried a few different ideas out on his base and he said something like "wow, remember when I built this, I'm so happy with the way I wound up designing my base". For how many bases I've started and torn down over the years, it made the game feel very relatable and with practice I could make something as cool as what he was accomplishing on hermitcraft. With the way the game and the server have evolved, it doesn't feel like I'm even playing the same game that I'm watching anymore.
And to be clear, that's awesome. The stuff happening this season is incredible to see. But I definitely understand how the behind the scenes has become such a grind and that a lot of hermits have wound up talking about wanting or needing to change their approach to the hermitcraft content. Appreciate your discussion about it.

I don't really care to watch other content creators coverage of the snapshots due to time, but also because I prefer your delivery of the content as well as knowing that you'll answer any of the obvious questions or concerns regarding the changes.

It's two different styles for sure, but there are great benefits to both. Or you can do what Joe does, stream mostly, and the videos can kind of come from the streamed content, for those that have the time to catch the streams.

Geeze X, you scared me! I thought something was going to happen to HC or you were going to leave permanently. But it's great to hear that your opening up to new avenues in life. I think the last few years have made all of us reconsider our lives and what is really important, and I'm glad your asking the big question and doing some soul searching. We only have a limited amount of time and you choosing to prosue something that really matters to you instead of the uphill grind of UA-cam is really wise. The grind can be so hard on the mental and physical health especially balancing it with life responsibility, so its totally understandable to be farly warn out. And I'm glad to hear your not leaving the community, though I will be sad to see less videos I'm thankful for the years we have. I'm also super excited, I think all the Hermits are really stepping up their creative game as they take breaks and seek things they are truly passionate about. Like what Mumbo has done. And know the HC community will always stand by you X, and I'm excited to see you top of the charts one day!

X, Hermitcraft has been a huge part of growing up for me. Years ago I would be watching from around 5 different Hermits' perspectives. I probably haven't watched any episodes in around 2 years, but I like to go look at thumbnails to see if it's still as awesome as I remember.
This is a very second channel video, but it is very inspiring for me. I'm an aspiring musician who doesn't make the time to exercise his writing muscles as much as he wants. Hoping to learn from you and grow up in a way. Make things I'm passionate about more of a priority. It's easier to enjoy your passions if they are a bigger part of your life.
I'm still very young and still have a long way to go, but hearing this from someone making the decision to end/change a 10 year era of their life is huge for me (10 years is more than half of my life).
Thanks for laying it all out! I'll try to catch some of the one-off videos as they come for nostalgia's sake.

Sometimes we stop ourselves from evolving as people and creatives because the thing we've been doing for years has been successful or even brought us happiness so why would we ever stop? I'm going through that right now myself, evolving from the way I've been living since my late teens as I've found new interests, hobbies, job opportunities, etc in my mid-twenties. It feels weird to leave the things behind that made me happy and successful in my goals in my early twenties. But I had to realize those things aren't doing so much for me anymore.
Sometimes its hard to leave behind the things that have brought so much comfort for so long but we can't grow without letting go of some of it to make room for the new!

another album from the same record label: he left nothing for the swimback by skech185; i cant even begin to describe how out there and wild this album is, its one of the most hard to listen to albums ive heard, but i find it so rewarding when i listen to it.

I first discovered the whole SMP stuff with hermitcraft, and then I got interested in another (french-speaking) SMP (named Holycube) and that’s all. But since then I never stopped to compare them together. So here’s what I’ve noticed.
1- There are 43 people playing on Holycube, a lot more than on hermitcraft, but this SMP is not their priority : for those who are UA-camrs and streamers, they mostly live with other content like UHCs, other SMPs or other games; and for those who aren’t, they obviously have a real job and play on the server like anyone playing with their friends. Obviously this leads to some people rarely being on, and some others to stop playing in the middle of the season, but it doesn’t really impact the server.
2- And as the people on this SMP constitute some kind of a web of friends (this guy is friend with this girl who is friend with this other girl…), they sometimes end up in little side-SMPs like modded/hardcore ones or in other small minecraft events (at least more often than hermitcraft members).
3- But let’s get back to the SMP in itself. I’ve also realized that these guys are not as megabase driven as hermitcraft players. They definitely don’t see any advantage in putting their base as the plot of the season, a lot of them build "mega bases" together ("mega bases" includes medieval castles, entire villages (not just a bunch of houses but something coherent with guilds, farms, mines, religious place…)…), some have a tiny house, some others let friends build the base while working on something else, one person hides her base inside others people bases, and the last remaining don’t even bother to build a base either because they are really bad at it or because they are not on the server for that. Btw they reserve designing in creative and mods like litematica for really complex and most important builds.
I’ll stop here because I forgot all of my other points, but something that is definitely noticeable on hermitcraft is that the seasons are centered on people’s mega bases, starting even before the beginning of the season (when hermits choose their plots of land). Also, however many blocks hermit’s bases are distant by (they tend to get closer each season) we could put a giant bedrock wall between them and nobody would notice…

Honestly I don’t watch your videos too much but I love Hermitcraft! And I can see how having to upload on a schedule with the possibility of repercussions if you don’t, would make anyone a bit nuts. And having been doing this for so long, it’s understandable that this must be a really hard decision to make. And I’ve been in and out of the same place with my job. The idea of leaving or changing career is beyond daunting. But it could also be the best decision you could ever make… even if that means making a space for yourself. And so far all of the hermit communities I’ve seen are always so incredibly supportive and positive, and I can’t imagine your fanbase would be any different! My problem is I spend time agonizing over the decision… might be easier to rip off the band-aid! It’s late and I doubt anything I’ve said was helpful, but take care of yourself and do what’s best for you! It seems like the hermitcraft community is strong enough to let you catch a break and lessen the weight off your shoulders! Like a kid growing up and moving out but they come to visit once and a while!

Being able to do what you enjoy in your day job is #1 priority for creative people. There can't be any creativity if your heart is not in it. Do what your heart tells you, don't be a slave to the yt algorithm. And if this means less Minecraft or no more Minecraft, then there may be a small minority of fans (perhaps a very vocal one) that doesn't understand that, but the vast majority of your fans will support you. (And personally, I wouldn't think twice to prioritize making music if I could do that. Music is the best.)

Fully in support of your decisions man. Your music is awesome. As a fellow metalhead and musician I would love nothing more than to see you succeed on that space. And you have the greatest approach to it. The beautiful thing about art, especially music, is it fulfills it's own existence simply by being made. It is expression of thought and soul, and to have been expressed is it's purpose. Being heard is secondary and not necessary. A great bonus no doubt, but not the end goal.
I would miss you and Hermit craft should it no longer be a thing, but there's always previous seasons that are well worth a rewatch. On to bigger and better things my friend. Good luck!

Nice Talk. The cool thing on HC I think is that you are rarely restricted through progress. Very early on each season, you look that some players can progress through fast, so trying out new blocks, and exploring the new updates doesn't seem to be an issue. Like now with the trims, Hermits were all over discovering them and not restricted by diamonds or anything. But I like the idea, where you try out the stuff in Creative and Mythbusting worlds, then see what is best in Survival in Hermitcraft :) One thing I also really enjoy on HC, is the interactions, and seeing you have fun and play games, really brings joy.

Okay, one thing I've learned after almost forty years of living is that you need to do a lot of things that you're responsible for in life but when it comes to choices that affect your mental and physical health in some way, the focus needs to be on those. And, more importantly, your happiness. It's better to dive into new projects or change your perspective on what you already do than it is to force yourself to continue doing the same exact thing. Sure, some may not like the path that you're walking on but this is a journey that's for you, not them. And, you do matter a lot!
