I remember when 5up did his face reveal, it was more because he acknowledged that as a growing streamer eventually people would glorify his face reveal to a problematic extent. He just did it quickly and inconspicuously and moved on. It really sucks that people are being forced to do that in todays day and age, streamers should have privacy and anonymity if they want it.

It's crazy, I've been around since the early age of the internet. The internet used to be about anonymity. People's identity was a username and profile pic. I don't get this obsession of people wanting to see what everyone looks like.

I personally like how technoblade did his face reveal (RIP). His face is out there if people want to see it but he never made a big deal out of it and made all his content focused on his personality and skill. If he did reveal his face in videos it was just there instead of something he fervently keeps secret.

The thing about Dream face revealing though is that he was ALREADY in the position where hundreds of thousands of people were sending him hate and stuff, so he is entirely unphased by people commenting on him because that was already a thing from almost the very beginning of his career (arguably even before he started his career). He's said for years that he wasn't going to face reveal until George got to America, and how that he is in the US, Dream face revealed!
Don't worry about the stress and all that, Dream is living his best life, having fun with friends, and even laughing at the jokes made at his expense! He tweeted on his private twitter account that none of it is getting to him and that nothing really changes with regards to his stance on hate (which is that it's all stupid and he genuinely doesn't care) and he posted on snapchat and tiktok playing into the jokes about his chin.

Doesn't make the hatred okay, lord knows I rant about it all the time on twitter, but I wouldn't try and say that it's degrading his mental health when he's said he's the happiest he's ever been right now.
There has been times where he has said things that have indicated that online shit got to him, but it was always because they were accusations on his character and threats to his integrity as a person (the speedrun drama, he's described that time as one of the worst periods of his mental health, and some time back in April where he tweeted on a private account that he missed the speedrun drama because the drama back then was much simpler)

Honestly, Dream is just a person. Another face out there. I remember reading The Little Prince and the part with the fox really stuck out to me, especially now given Dream’s situation:
"To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world....”
Though this would apply both positively and negatively. For me, I’m not as much of a fan of Dream recently as I was in early 2020, but I still am happy for him and his friends. I saw George’s little vlog about them meeting and it was absolutely adorable. I remember how they spoke about wanting to do irl content once Dream and I’m excited that they’re excited. I wish they could just live their lives peacefully but there really are people out there who would attack someone for just existing. I hate it when people (specifically my mother) would go targeting features I hate about myself (I’m 22, 5’2”, and on the rather husky side). My parents constantly target my height (though I’m Asian) and my weight, but would go around calling me beautiful- like wot??? I was born relatively attractive but idk man, a bit of depression hit me hard and I gained a lot of weight during the pandemic. I’m slowly trying to return to my old weight (was a competitive swimmer for a good part of my life) but it’s hard when my parents keep dissing me for trying to diet and keep calling me fat. Hah. So yes, I hate when others would judge people for their looks and especially aren’t afraid to say mean things to their faces. There are people out there tagging or replying to Dream directly and insulting his looks. Man, he’s just a human like all of us.

I think for X its also different because he grew his audience much more gradually and even though it's a pretty significant size now, we don't have that many of us that are burning with the curiosity of X's face reveal. Especially because when I first started watching X back in Hermitcraft season 2, most gaming channels didn't have their faces featured at all.
I never wondered what Mumbo looked like before he got into filmmaking, or Tango and Impulse before they started streaming with facecam. But Dream and CorpseHusband exploded in popularity so suddenly and them being Faceless(tm) became such a talking point it just ended up being a big deal. I'm glad Dream has the freedom to film in-person content now if that's what he wants but I kind of resent the whole culture around desperate curiosity for face reveals.

Different perspective, but having a degree of face blindness (the technical term is prosopagnosia), facial features are pretty low on my list of identifiable features. I'm more likely to recognise somebody by other visual context clues, even minutiae of body language is more recognisable to me than a person's face. And being neurodivergent, I tend to interact best with people via non-visual, non-physically present media (text or voice). The 'disembodied voice' mode of content creation (whether associated with an avatar or not) is thus very relatable for me, perhaps more so than seeing their faces. In the case of people inclined to be attracted to celebrities, there's also probably an element of, "Is this person attractive? I hope so!" involved.

I think it's the buildup that made it worse, like how often he teased it and then it was made such a massive deal. The facetiming different creators before hand, reaction upon reaction videos, a whole song written about it. This caught attention to the whole MCYT community, heck even people that don't even watch minecraft videos knew about it. This opened the door into so much judgement, especially as he doesn't have a favoured reputation with some parts of the MCYT community. People will always judge your face if it's on the internet, like you said - having your face out there.. you just have to be prepared for that. But in Dream's case, it's so much worse - because it's not just 'people on the internet'.. it's the whole internet. He is essentially a celebrity if you will. Revealing now, when he's in his limelight, when he is the most known person on the internet - that's what's dangerous. If he had revealed earlier on, like you said, it maybe wouldn't have been received in such a controversial way and people that didn't watch him wouldn't have really cared.

Maybe if people cared that much about is appearence is due to how people tend to idolise others. And about the fact that people relate to UA-camrs they enjoy watching. They idolise them because they have respect for them, but when they do a face reveal, they don't feel the same, you can feel lied to, and seeing a representation of the character you respect that just doesn't look like a "respectable" or special person, can make you feel like they don't deserve your respect. Also, if you relate to a person you don't really know, you tend to link your appearance to their, which mean that the day they show their true self to you, you'll compare them to yourself, and such, show much more critism than needed.

But I also have been around long enough to know that that is inevitable and for those who wish to have a level of anonymity it becomes increasingly difficult to do so and when the veil is finally pulled back there's so much fanfare around it at the whole ordeal blows itself way out of proportion.

I can see why X would be interested in this topic, as I've seen people asking for him to reveal his face, and I imagine it gets tiring when it's something you've made up your mind not to do. What little I know of Dream is that he has been accused of being a problematic person (making negative comments about marginalized communities?), and so I have no interest in him personally; but to answer the general question of "why we care about face reveals," I think it has to do with the audience often wanting to see ourselves reflected in popular media. If you look at the explosive rise of reality shows, for example- we have the technology to make TV shows, movies, etc, about literally anything fantastical that we want- space, dragons, dinosaurs, robots- and yet a huge amount of money is spent on producing shows that are about real people doing daily activities in the real world. Sometimes they're famous like the Kardashians, sometimes they're previously-unknown people rounded up by casting calls, but I think ultimately there's this human "drive" to peer into the lives of other humans and see how similar/dissimilar we are. Maybe we wonder if we're living our best lives, and want to compare notes. Maybe we're confident in ourselves and are looking to poke fun at others. The reason could be pretty much anything, but I think that's where a lot of wanting something like a "face reveal" comes from: "how do I compare to this person who is involved in popular content?"
I hope that makes sense and thanks for listening.

This is interesting conversation. Part of me thinks something like a “fave reveal” does nothing but serve vanity. On the other hand, it’s a piece of ones identity and why should it have any consequence to ones content? As creators, you create a viewing based on your content, and almost defacto create a “cult community” as you had mentioned in a previous video. At that point, further revealing intimate parts about your identity (face, family, personal lives) is just a part of that channel’s (cults?) development. In Hermitcraft, there are members who openly use their faces, and some who do not. I’m sure when one first “reveals” themselves, it’s a strange occurrence for the audience but it should not change the content. Those whose faces I’ve seen before, I enjoy them as much as I ever did. Same goes for those who’ve not.
Like you said though, the anonymous internet can be unforgiving. Perhaps it is better to keep distance between ones personal identity, and their otherwise professional internet-based one, ESPECIALLY when the primary audience have not yet learned indifference over something like physical appearance.

Hey X one thing I’ve always thought about is for many people who don’t show there face there fans listen to there accent/voice alott more and especially people with a more “obvious voice” so say yours are you ever worried about going to the shops and people noticing it’s you just by your voice?

Wish I could watch your hermitcraft videos more, there are just so many great hermits to watch and not enough time! I’m happy I can listen in on these ones, though ❤

I find that when people stay anonymous the focus stays on what they do rather than who they are. For example members in the band Sleep Token stay anonymous to keep the focus on their music.

Jealous really is an amusing idea XD the thing to remember is that, as far as I know, Dream was faceless to protect his privacy as a child, as most of us used to be encouraged to do. It was only in the last few years that he exploded in popularity and gained a very polarizing position online. As a result, he lost the control over elements of his own life, like going out with friends and the types of videos he got to make, which is maddening to a young adult (speaking as a young adult). It had gotten so bad that he was hounded by fans to face reveal and hounded by antis to simply disappear. Both groups had large portions that would expose him without a second thought if they saw him in public. So, he did the only thing he could see as regaining agency over his own identity. He showed his face, on his terms. Whether this was the right choice will always be up for debate, but he honesty wanted to be able to go out with friends and make videos together just having fun.
I wouldn't envy him. To feel such intense pressure without having the ability to go out with real friends, for fear of being recognized and exposed, would drive me crazy

true it’s interesting to see how people reacted. myself i didn’t really care to be honest, it was legit just a “oh cool, so that’s what he looks like”.

I'll be honest I didn't really care if he did a face reveal but since he did he's got a lot more options now what to do but honestly dream wasn't exactly what I imagined I just imagine long hair and a beard that was all

X: "he's just a person with a face, we're all born like that"
people born without faces due to defects: sad faceless noises

It always bothered me that, upon typing any hermit's name into the youtube searchbar, one of the top ten results is always "[name] face reveal." Why is a face so important? I just assume Etho looks exactly like Kakashi.

One thing that everyone should always remember, especially not just to youtubers. Is that whatever you do in this world, whether good or bad. People will always have something to say. So why bother minding what they all say tbh. Just continue what you wanna do and do it without fear or thought of what they say. In the end what matters anyway is that you do what you think is right.

I don't even know how I got to this channel as I don't watch any other Xixuma content, but it's consistently interesting

I hope some of the Hermits that haven’t done a face reveal do one or a joke one but either way I still enjoy the content

This video sold me on the Xisuma says channel. I have had trouble getting into your Hermitcraft content after coming from other Hermits, don’t change that for me by any means. I just wanted to say what’s going on here is very unique and very much up my own alley, and I’m sure its a fitting format for many others.

Well I think the reason there's a fixation on his looks is because it begs the question "Why was he hesitant about showing his face?". When it's a face 'reveal', vs just them using a face cam at some point, confidence in your appearance is something that comes to mind as a reason for that reluctance. It's why we don't pass as much judgement on a youtuber we come across and the first thing we see from them is a face cam, there isn't attention being drawn to how they feel about their appearance

Well I don’t know about the comments on looks but it seems to me that part of what’s made the face reveal matter is that he hyped it up so much.
