Wonderful ! (And funny to think that the time that's passed between that 1974 recording and today is more than the time between 1974 and Bix Beiderbecke's 1928 original!)
Bix Beiderbecke - what can you say? An extraordinary musical talent and a cornet player whose best remembered composition is a piano piece that Ms McPartland plays for us here. This was written in 1927 and it still sounds modern. Prohibition as an experiment in the US (January 17, 1920 - December 5, 1933) was an absolute, complete failure. So sad when you consider a young guy like Bix whose alcoholism was so severe that he drank himself to death by the time he was 28 yrs old in 1931. But we still honor his short life and his music today. His influence is still felt.
Enjoyed Marian's jazz piano radio shows back in the day, and thought she blew away most of her guest pianists! Here she plays this complex Bix score amazingly! Thanks for letting me enjoy two Jazz legends in one. Love you Marian
Great piece; still have the original sheet music my grandfather gave me in 1979 when I was only 12 years old. I learned it on the piano, and have loved it ever since. Thanks for posting!🎹
I've been fascinated with Bix's music for years, and this video helps me understand that I'm not the only one captivated by his music. I really like this version, and hope that more offerings find their way down the tube.
Very few understand Bix's thoughts and their interpretations. Marian gets it! So happy to hear his compositions played by those who understand on a visceral level.
Bix’s music was both of its time and ahead of its time. Some of the chord progressions, voicings and ideas in some of his pieces are 50 or 60 years ahead of their time, for popular if not for classical music.
I like her interpretation. I always enjoyed watching McPartland playing; she is clearly having fun, and compared to the 1927 recording by Bix, the sound quality is much better.
Shouldn't it be 1975 instead of 1974? It appears that this is the same concert when she played Avalon and Royal Garden Blues with Jimmy McPartland, Spiegle Wilcox and Venuti.
Wow, Marion McPartland is playing a Bix Beiderbeck piece only a few away from you, and all you can do is look away and light your cigarette? That audience should be ashamed of themselves!
I loved listening to her show! I was an avid listener for 30 + years, I think!

It's hard to imagine my life w/o Piano Jazz
Everybody digs Marian McPartland, too. Her beautiful soul lives on!

Remember seeing her at Bakers Keyboard Lounge (Detroit) back in the late fifties early sixties.

She truly makes it her own and it is no less beautiful! That’s really hard to do for this piece!!! Thanks for sharing this magical performance!
Classic Thank You
A fantastic talent. Loved her smooth style and range. RIP
Such a magical piece of music.
Marian McPartland was a great personality and a fine pianist
Thank You for all the great listening.
God Bless You
Look at that joy expressed at 2:43......Marian gets it....she truly gets Bix.
Before he died "of everything" he gave us this. Thank you Bix. And Marian.
Bixie gave us everything he had.......so did Marian.
Used to listen to her at The Rountowner in Rochester back in the 70s.....what a talent she was...
Golden!
I am constantly engaged to write these critiques, but this is outstanding.
So great
RIP light and peace
In The Mist has always sounded to me as intelligent as it is beautiful.
Very, very well put....

Agreed.
Agreed......100%. Bix Lives...and so does Marian.

This was so far and above anything I might try to do on piano... Marion's skills... and Bix's writing... I'll just surrender now.
Never give up!
As do I....
Excelente!
and to think, in a better universe, Bix could've been there to hear this.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
.Mnnnn. Very very nice.

Especially evident at 2:43......bless her heart.
You can feel Bixs in her playing like he was there.
There is a great video of Marian Mcpartland and Lyle Mays together,

Good call, Emrah!
I Keep It Real - Milkbone. The originator of a legendary piano riff.
Oh
Adding the rubato is good.

Sounds like music fromMr. Roger's Neighborhood soundtrack
That music is by the great Johnny Costa, so that’s a compliment in both directions!
