There isn't a musician that brings me more joy than Erroll Garner. This is simply sublime. He was a genius. He followed no one, and no one could follow him. To me he's the greatest.
I feel exactly the same way.....Erroll Garner is and always will be the greatest improvisor and possibly greatest musician to me, of all time, because he creates happiness and joy instantly. He also has the strongest and baddest groove and soulfulness of anyone I've ever heard!!! All the piano giants from Monk to Phineas all adored Erroll and were astounded by his abilities.
He is my favorite jazz pianist....A genius and gentle person...We can see it on his face when he is playing...Always tears coming in my eyes when i saw and listen to him!!!
Erroll is a true genius as his playing is so original, filled with so much rhythm and so many restatements of the theme. How can he play without hardly looking at the keyboard? RIP Erroll. You are missed; I first heard your music in 1957 and have ever since been in awe.
Eroll has changed my piano playing so profoundly. I play 2 sets every week and have been playing for 40 years. Since binge listening to Eroll for about a year my skill level has taken several quantum leaps forward. He has brought a whole new frontier of what is possible. My Professional jazz guitarist father in law is 87 and is on hospice. He turned me on to Erroll and we listen to “Misty”and “The Shadow of your smile” together every single day. I get a phone call several times a week from him groaning like Erroll then he hangs up. I’ll miss that!❤
There is something so very special about this particular pianist. He tickles something inside those who can hear him. Its very intense because it stimulates laughter, joy and tears. The tears come not with an awareness of sadness but something more piquant, profound, the beauty of life? played through an instrument? still with knowledge of lifes cruelty. He gets me all the time.
Well said. To me, Errol Garner will always be the greatest pianist. I appreciate the genius and skill of Art Tatum, the breadth and intellect of Oscar Peterson, and I simply love Bill Evans’ playing-but Errol Garner will always be the best. He has a soul and a groove that get to me every time. No matter what he plays, I feel I understand what he was trying to say-immediately. No one brings a joy or an ache to my heart, or a tear to my eye, like Errol Garner. There are literally thousands of jaw-dropping technicians on the piano; but music is really about the emotion and the feeling it conveys, isn’t it!?
Simply fantastic! Erroll and his band are most delightful to listen to. Erroll's keyboard artistry is phenomenal. Thanks for showing this performance, a Jazz Lover's delight.
Thank you youtube for allowing me to see so much of this unique talent. I first saw him on the television when I was about 15 and was blown away. With a 40+ years love of jazz in many of its forms, I still return to Erroll as my first love.
The thing with Erroll, is that HE got off playing and hearing his music more than the rest of mere-mortal listeners. He's in a constant state of euphoria, brought on by his own gifted hands and genius ears.
Erroll garner has given me more listening pleasure than any other artist ever. He was a true genius, and god what a talent. He was the greatest pianist of them all.
These intros are so good! Abstract and intriguing and yet inevitably yielding to the familiar warmth of the tune. They sound like they were ripped from the credits of an old Hollywood movie, there's flamboyance and drama and mystery, it's all there! I love the left hand action here too, so versatile, there's the super gentle dreamy swing, now THAT is beautiful!
i'm so intrigued by his technique, as a classical pianist it bewilders me. how he's able to play quickly, precisely, evenly and clearly. can only hope to one day play jazz half as good. as him
Melodic for the ears & pleasing to the soul. Sheer skill in his playing of the piano. His facial expressions are also a delight to see as he performs. Lifting my Spirit. So brilliant but underrated.
Underrated? He's a legend round the world. He was fondly called "The happy man" No matter what was going on, when he stepped on that stage he unfailingly transported people with his genius.

Lots of people can play the piano, but Errol caressed it, beat it, stretched it, made love to it and much more just to get a sound so special that can never be imitated or even copied! A true maestro of the piano he knows so well he doesn't have to look at the keys to play it materfully.
This is splendid. He appeared at my undergraduate college last century and I was pleased to be in the audience to hear his artistry. It does not get any better the this. I have made this simple request of listeners. Make and explain a comparison between Tatum and Peterson and Errol Garner. They can be found on the same branch of the jazz tree for piano music but they occupy different places on the branch with Tatum probably located closer to the trunk. Never ending embellishments made for the full effect of the improvisation to take its effect on listeners. Orchestral form of improvisation for sure has many elements not to be duplicated. It is worth its weight in gold.
When i go to heaven, if there is a heaven.... I want to meet up with this fella and get him to lay hands on me and pass on some of that amazing talent for when I next come down to earth!

No song ever gave Erroll any trouble as he never played some songs in any one particular key, changing keys all the time depending on where his hands came down that moment. Carefree, he grooves like crazy in any and in every key and if I heard a song once, he could probably play it perfectly for the rest of his life. A collossal genius and beautiful person! He probably did more for planet earth than anyone who ever lived because imagine all of the people who heard and saw him were made so happy by his gift. He creates happiness and joy and fun!!! His is really timeless and irresistible and positively joyous!
Agree with Mike's remark below, Garner will always lift the spirits. He is my go to jazz musician when I need cheering up, but also when I want to learn new tunes, be they Erroll's own compositions or jazz standards. Even now this Gemini Genius, just 55 when he died on 2nd January 1977, is under-rated by some people and even scoffed at in some quarters. Ahmad Jamal (sorry if that is wrong spelling) puts Garner in the Impressionist school, seeing him as a Debussy and Ravel of jazz, adding that no one can know or understand jazz without knowing Garner's music. This is so true. Whilst Tatum and Peterson might be considered technically and harmonically better, Garner wins the prize for original improvisations, making the piano sound like a whole orchestra, changes of tempo and dynamics, sheer joyful swinging on faster numbers, exquisite ballad playing, sumptuously rich chords, great compositions of his own. Always my favourite and can never be knocked off top spot. Wish I had heard him live !
i worked at The Living Room in Cincinnati where he often played. It was 1966 til 1969, I was nineteen, so young, but I absolutely knew how great he was. Still my fave!
No doubt in my mind that Erroll is a genius learning to play the piano and composing like he did. Too sad that he died so young. I am sure he had much more to give us from his soul. I just love his playing and watching his face as he plays(around). SYLVIA! FL 10/21
@@danjuric622 I've known Ahmad for many years and he mentions Erroll as his prime influence, they went to the same high school in Pittsburgh, PA, and had one music teacher in common, Erroll being nine years older. His first wife said the "Erroll never learned to read music" was a bit exaggerated. He didn't have to read, but it wasn't as if he was never exposed reading at all. "Reading" music is a skill that must be kept up, not like riding a bike, and players all very in their "ability" to read, just a side note. I've know quite a few musicians who are very good, but not good readers.
I’m not sure there’s ever been a better pianist! He’s so sick wit it!!!😆 🔥 And I heard he never learned how to sight read! Incredible gift from God!!!🙌🏾
He ,was known to do long intro's in between tunes AND the band had to wait ,sometimes not waiting but at attention. He, then goes into a Gospel Rag at 10:38.The, Guy was a complete composition.
iwas aware of him, of course, years ago but hadn't really heard him. I concentrated on guitarists but did collect Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Hank Jones, Tommy Flanaghan, Hampton Hawes, Phineas Newborn, Jr., etc. Didn't hear a lot of Garner, Shearing, Marian McPartland and so on on the radio in the late 60's and 70's and I didn't make the effort to search their music out and listen. Very glad that something like this exists to show me what i missed.
I've loved jazz since I became consciously aware of it back in 1994. The music was already in my ears because quite a bit of the music my parents listened to was made by jazz musicians, but also they had Ray Charles, Nat Cole albums, but categorizing music didn't happen much in my teens, then one early 1994 evening I heard an evening-full of jazz in its unadulterated form, mainly ballads played by trio's featuring piano or guitar, and it blew my mind. There are some avenues of the music which I have struggled to listen to, that, although sophisticated, seems more arid with a different type of sound, and perhaps less focus on traditional means of melodic/harmonic resolution? just different from the music of people like Errol Garner, I just find the things he plays to be so sweet lush and melodic, irresistible. Someone below referred to his playing as impressionist, maybe that's the attraction for me. But I guess it's probably a matter of personal taste, my leanings are probably conditioned by the music I was exposed to right up to my early 20's when I finally got to hear jazz (reggae, Motown, UK and US pop music, rare groove, Soul, gospel for example)
"I can't get started with you," well, the introduction sounds like a clear, fresh water stream on a day in May... or June. The man was a genius. Someone that cannot be immidatated.
Erroll Garner é uma dessas figuras que não deveriam morrer nunca! Maravilhoso, gênio, divino, não! Deve haver um termo muito mais alto. Não consigo encontrá-lo, mas sei que ele existe, para defini-lo.
It is as if Erroll is two people at the same time. One is performing...and the other is listening and loving it.
Terry Hammond, that is a brilliant comment!
