I know that this video is some 5 years old now but still. You did a great job diagnosing and repairing this fault. Your last statement about corrosion from aging and environmental exposure let alone the flexing is spot on. One more thing you should do however to address the corrosion at the connector is to apply some dielectric grease to the pins in the connector and to the backside where the wires are crimped to the sockets. Even some water proof shrink tubing will help as well.
There are more great techs out there than doctors are. If all the techs were like most doctors, you'd see wheels and parts falling off cars. But yes, there are idiot techs also.
I was a mngr for Firestone for a lot of years. Tech's like this were like finding gold and we did all we could to keep them! Not a parts changer, this guy. Great diagnostic and repair, great video!
Now, THAT is a proper diagnosis and repair and verification! After what we've been subjected to at high prices and repeat failures, is a dream come true! Thank you, Mike! I have subscribed to success!
I do like the way you work. Being ''CORRECT'' is the best way to be, also honest with the customer. These are the qualities that people look for when looking for mechanics. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely FANTASTIC and in depth video. I knew I had an issue with one of the speed sensors, and have replaced both cables on GM's before based on other videos. Replaced them right to the ABS module. I extend the new harness to the module with some old outdoor extension cord. take the remainder of the sketchy GM harness right out of the equation all together. However, I am ashamed to say, that as a former mechanic, I would have never thought to jump from one side to the other to verify, absolutely, the problem. I've done that a lot with other components, speakers, lights, etc. But never thought to do it with the wheel speed sensors. Genius sir!
Fantastic video, by far the best. Helped me use the volt meter, set things up the exact same way very easily. Tested the same way, found a break in the same wire, did the the repair. All fixed, and returned the hub that I was told I needed to change. Thanks a bunch !!!
Hey CauCajun Man, thanks man! Can you please edit your comment to remove the profanity. We like this channel to be viewable by all. I appreciate the kind words. Thanks! :) Mike Becker, Senior Technical Services Instructor
Great job Mike. A month ago I did basically the exact same as you just did but on an 06 montana minivan. No relevant codes.. Live data to the rescue. Saw the dropouts on drivers front wheel. Set up my cheap little hantek scope right beside my maxidas and could see the bearing respond but the abs module not seeing it. The problem was the exact same yellow wire inside the connector as yours. What a coincidence. As a DIYer it was pretty satisfying to have found and fixed the problem without throwing a bearing at it and still tracking down the problem afterwards. I owe it all to the guys like yourself who are teaching those of us who enjoy learning your craft. All the best Mike.
Hey Mike! Thanks man! Glad you were able to fix it right the first time! Nothing better than proving it before installing parts. Weird it was the yellow wire again...I wonder if it's always the yellow wire...hmmmm...gotta be some fun theory behind why the yellow wire gets it but the blue doesn't...that's a topic for another time :) Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
Excellent video! This is the procedure I was going to perform to diagnose my 2014 Impala Limited, but I really liked the harness switch trick you did. Well done! It boggles my mind how many people I've seen on various forums that have gone into a dealership, only to have the hub/sensor replaced, and then driving off and having the same problem recur.
its420erik exactly what I’m going through right now. Just replaced front left hub bearing and rear left . My abs light was on it’s off right now but my brake flutters and feel /sense a spring like noise / vibration. I took my car back only to have it returned with the same issue. This issue has cost me $424.13 so far taking it back tomorrow feeling pretty frustrated! Any advice?
I'm adding you to my list of Tube videos, you really make it clear as to the problem and the diagnostics. As karma would have it I have this problem in a 2005 Cavalier which is also intermittent. Its going into dealership Wednesday. Used to fix my own, but to old anymore. Thank-you again.
Excellent accurate diagnostic's I like the way you look for the source of the problem before you start throwing new part's at it , and your way of thinking how you can't afford to be wrong because you have to be right, there is no money to be made if you can't fix it the first time in the shop, I love the hands on instruction with the different tools you used thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey man, thanks! I'm glad you liked the video and the approach. Let me know if you enjoy some of our other vids! Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Excellent Presentation and logical checks. In my car, I opened wheel hub, sensors. Still have intermittent on off ABS. Planning to check all wiring including ground points . Thanks Buddy 😀
I'm having a similar issue. I have a 2000 Alero and in the past two weeks the problem started. Prior to this, just after getting my car, it was raining and suddenly my service vehicle soon, ABS, and trac off lights came on. I thought little of it. Then it this winter it would disable ABS and traction control in snowstorms (I live in Minnesota). Thanks for the thorough diagnosis testing. I'll be freerzing my buns off (as long as it isn't snowing) tomorrow on the cold concrete slab that I park my car on (even though it's April 7th tomorrow) checking this.
Hey Tanner, thanks for watching. Did you find a similar problem to this video? Is that what it ended up being? Mike Becker, Senior Technical Services Instructor
Great video (posted years ago, but still relevant)! One big factor that the viewer should consider before he attempts this repair is whether he has a full sized lift for the car! It would have been a nightmare to try this fix lying on your back under the car on a floor creeper! In some cases with a different harness configuration you could do the job horizontally by jacking the car and pulling off each wheel, but even that way your clever diagnostic trick of cross wiring adjacent sensors would still be hard to do! In any case, nice work and great attitude about doing a quality, accurate job -- applies even if its just a DIY project not for hire!
Absolutely wonder teaching video !!! Certainly saves a lot of time and money! Mine was the exact same problem only on the right wheel. Thank you so much!!
Great helpful video and good tech explanation, much better understanding of how the sensor does its job, also that there are variations between manufacturer👍
Excellent trouble shooting with verification of what you think you know. That's the way to direct your efforts to fixing the problem right the first time. Great video training on fixing this particular problem and in the discipline of troubleshooting and verification. That wire sure cooperated with your video training session, couldn't have asked for a better training aide!
$120 for a bluedriver. It reads abs codes, air bag codes, system errors, it links to your phone, provides real time data, repair solutions, and links to the exact part you need. Best scantool I've ever owned hands down.
First time on your channel. I have to commend you for a superb video. Filming was great. The lighting and camera work really showed what was going on. Mike's knowledge and his ability to fully explain/describe the issue and fix were very good. Can't wait to look over some of your other videos. I hope to see some diagnostic tools at different price points. I'm a DIYer , so I can't afford top of the line equipment. Obviously I going to Subscribe. Keep up this type of work.
Right? Why can't all mechanics be that careful and thorough? That shop is also immaculate which indicates that this is a higher-end repair facility. I'm still struggling with an ABS error issue from last year with my 2005 Chevy Impala. A local mechanic tried to fix it and it failed right away as I pulled off his lot. He tried again by replacing the hub sensor noting that the new part was defective. It lasted less than a week. All of the info that I'm getting now seems to indicate that the wiring/harness goes bad and GM supposedly acknowledged this. As we can see, ABS systems aren't so simple to diagnose but it can be done, but you need to be very systematic without shooting from the hip and guessing (and wasting time and money). Thanks, Mike.
Hey Mr. Lucky, thanks for watching! It is a common issue. I hope this sheds some light on the testing and verification! Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Mike I just described your job gave me an example of the problem I have with my Impala the same wire fraying and rust well since I saw your expertise its time to do mine and thank you for such good detailed work!
Thanks Glen! It is cool to see what a wire looks like after all that time...I didn't expect that much rust/solidification. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
Hey Matt! A refresher is always nice right? Not the hardest of diagnostics...but it is some good testing to be accurate. Nothing worse than guessing! Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
Great video!!! Thanks so much!!! I will be doing this this weekend. I appreciate the help. Needed a starting point to diagnose and you've given it to me. Thx again!!
This was immensely helpful to me, especially the use of the alternate side harness to identify what was really wrong with my ABS sensor system on that side. After replacing the harness, I examined the old one and found a broken wire, though the insulation was undamaged.
Nice presentation. The camera(s) work and details are outstanding, really good quality. Makes it a pleasure to watch. ;-) Note to self, must get a car lift... ;-) Already did similar on several cars. Gosh! The lack of a lift makes it a nightmare job. Tedious and time consuming. Keep up the good work. Cheers
Now they have the shrink butt connectors with low-temp melt solder right inside the connector. The solder flows as you seal to the wires... very cool and the best of both worlds.
Great video and diagnosis! The only thing that I didn't like is the very last picture of the corroded wire. That is not normal at all, even for an older vehicle. It's a sure way to have more problems in the future. The corrosion is there and it's going to continue to corrode. One look at that would tell me to replace the entire cable. Speaking from an electronics tech with 40 years experience, and I also help a friend who runs a garage when he has electrical problems. Back to the good, you were very very thorough and many mechanics would have spliced the first broken connection and test drive to find they still have a problem. You got it right the first time and I commend you for that.
Great job Mike. Nice video, very informative. Also a very neat and tidy shop you keep. Having trouble with my abs system also. I just bought the truck and had to resolder some spots on the circuit board for my display for my gear shift. While I was in there I noticed someone had put electric tape over my ABS, and Brake light. Dirty trick. Shady to say the least. Thanks for the info. Wish me luck.
Hey Mark, thank you for watching. Our shop is more studio than shop :) That is a shady situation. Hope it's a quick easy repair for ya! Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
I have a 2004 GMC Canyon and I’m having some real issues with my Right Front ABS. What happened before I got the error is that my brakes are going out and I decided to replace ALL drums and discs with the help of my dad. We decided to start on the front right disc which does need to have a new disc out. Before we don’t know anything of how my vehicle work or where to unplug the ABS to take the whole thing out. So we went in blind, took the bolts off the wheel bearings but didn’t unplug the ABS. And as he does that the wire gives a resistance and couldn’t let go which messed with the sensor. The left side didn’t need a new disc by the way so that side is good. We run the computer diagnostics and it’s pointing to the Front Right ABS. I ordered a new ABS sensor (by itself) and we decided to take off the old sensor and replace it with the new. We got some sprays that was going to use to clean the wheel bearing to fit the sensor on very well. We unplug the battery for no false ABS readings, started on the whole replacement process, sprayed good on the bearings and put the sensor on once dried. After putting it all back together on my truck, with a new installed caliper, the ABS warning light went off which was a relief. Until, we took the truck on a test run for both caliper and ABS. When I press on the brakes my truck steering shudders to the left and veered my vehicle to the left which I knew something’s wrong. After a couple of brakes, the ABS light went on and the I P Brake lights went on. Now I ordered a full wheel bearing assembly with the sensor and it’s on its way over. My guess to what happened is that when we sprayed the old bearing to be put to use it messed with the sensor with the moisture or so. Could that be the problem to why my vehicle is acting that way?
It's really hard for me to say what happened without seeing it and driving it. It could be related to the ABS system, it could also be a base brake system issue. Normally brakes get replaced in pairs. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
excellent video. A week ago I got a C1233 (open/short right front). hubs are Timken and relatively new. It is winter. yesterday was below 0°C so there was no water. No ABS light. The day before it was above 0°C and there was water. Light was on. Connected scanner and drove. Wheel speed was being reported by all sensors and were accurate. With scanner I could clear code and it came back almost immediately. Repeated this process a few times. No way to "prove it". Would you recommend replacing wire harness for peace of mind. Bonus: no soldering required since there is a connector at both ends. Best price for harness is $105US + shipping. Car is '97 regal. I take good care of car even though this is a winter only car.
Hey Anthony, I wouldn't ever suggest just replacing something without proving it. There's almost always a way to prove it out. Jan 3rd we're doing a live broadcast talking about ABS signals and fixing issues. You should join for that and then make your decision. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
I think I figured it out. I pulled the wheel off today and the abs sensor wire from the hub clips onto a mount/extension on the backing plate. Thanks to excessive road salt, the mount broke off of the backing plate and the sensor wires were moving around instead of staying in place. The white insulator that covers the wires has been compromised so I suspect the wires inside have been compromised. Will be ordering new sensor wire and soldering it onto the old wire. Hoping for some warmer weather since I will be doing it on my driveway.
Thank you Mike, I like the the fotos at the end very much. A picture is worth a thousand words. ... Your working conditions are pretty close to optimal. You know that, don't you?
Hey Juergen! Thanks for watching! I thought you might like those pictures. I know, I do have it pretty great here, you'll never hear me complain! It's nice having that microscope, I like to show things like that because many techs don't have the equipment or the time to look that far into it. Thanks again Juergen! Mike Becker. Technical Services Instructor
Great job Mike I need to make me some long jumper leads like that. Good little tug test will usually always find the fault lol. But you are absolutely correct in making sure 100 percent your correct unfortunately people do get paid for being wrong they just keep tossing parts then I get them lol. Great job going all the way with diagnosis.
Hey Techman 48917, why make them when Carlos at AESWave can hook you up with a great set? :) It is unfortunate, and all that does is give techs and shops a bad name. A few ruin it for the many! Thanks for watching! Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
oh and i meant to tell you at time frame 19:50 you had a short bleep of a left front wheel speed of 1:2428 i guess you missed it though it was quick. but you already had the problem solved at that point, your good !!!
Good eye! I guess at that frame there must have been a quick connection in the circuit. Thanks again for watching and commenting! I really glad you've enjoyed this video :) Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Your welcome, its the eyes, eyebrows and nose, now if you would just make some off the cuff jokes once in awhile that would be really funny : ) , i used to do 3d faces for Disney some years back ... The thing about your videos is your totally professional and so right about the wrong diagnosis doesn't make the mechanic money just more headaches you got that right !!! It just wastes everybodies time and torques off the customer and next thing you know hes down eating breakfast with his fishing buddies bad mouthing the dumb mechanic and the mechanic loses all sorts of local business.
Haha I'll work on my stand-up routine! That is so true. People will tell everyone if they have a bad experience. Hard to stay in business that way, especially in a small town! Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Actualy, GM recomends NOT using solder on anything other than circut boards as it decreases the resistence gain...and the wire is design like that to give it a helicoil to reduce RF interfierence...thats why the wire is twisted like that.
Been having intermittent abs & traction control problem on my 2010 Chevy avalanche... Read the code...left wss changed the hub thinking it was the sensor but upon inspection found out the connector was repaired now I have to do the same as you and trace the wire back to see if it’s any tears further up
I just recently purchased some heat shrink and solder but connectors that I think will work great in areas like this. I hope they will work better then crimped ones.
Very good video. Re the connection preference - soldering is NOT a good idea in an environment where there's a lot of movement and vibration. The crimp connectors and heat shrink insulation is better, UNLESS you do the overlapped and twisted type of soldering, followed by heat shrink over the soldered connection. Few people are taught this anymore, and even then the place where the solder ends, the individual strands will bend and tend to crack where they meet the solder. I prefer the connectors you used for this repair, staggered and spiral wrapped the way you did it. The question I have is why the yellow wire was cracked and broken in several places when the blue wire was relatively intact. Different manufacturers maybe? The greenish powder at the connector end is copper oxide, with electrolytic migration of copper in between the strands. The black powder in the middle of the wire is where the breaking strands thinned out, and presented a higher resistance at that point, heating up and eventually broke. Then it shorted out a few more times with movement, burning the surrounding plastic insulation, which then acted as a carbon resistor until it separated enough to conduct little or no current.
Hey AZStarYT thanks! I'm not sure why only one of the insulation failed. Maybe the yellow wire has more of a certain chemical or the dye reacts differently? Not sure...but it does usually seem to be the yellow wire. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

Appreciated as always Mike. A nice refresher more than anything though I do love the running the leads across to the other side. Thanks again.
Hey Matt! A refresher is always nice right? Not the hardest of diagnostics...but it is some good testing to be accurate. Nothing worse than guessing!

Great video!!! Thanks so much!!! I will be doing this this weekend. I appreciate the help. Needed a starting point to diagnose and you've given it to me. Thx again!!
Hey Brad, thanks for watching! Good luck on your diag.

wonderful, amazing, have no word for such a wonderful diagnostic and repair.
Hey Ghulam, thank you so much! I have no words for such a wonderful comment :)

This was immensely helpful to me, especially the use of the alternate side harness to identify what was really wrong with my ABS sensor system on that side. After replacing the harness, I examined the old one and found a broken wire, though the insulation was undamaged.
Hey Neil thanks man! Glad the video helped you with figuring this out.

Nice presentation. The camera(s) work and details are outstanding, really good quality. Makes it a pleasure to watch. ;-)
Note to self, must get a car lift... ;-) Already did similar on several cars. Gosh! The lack of a lift makes it a nightmare job. Tedious and time consuming.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers
Hey, thanks a ton! A lift does make this a much easier job!!!
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
3 thumbs up that gives me a clear idea. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Harry!

Now they have the shrink butt connectors with low-temp melt solder right inside the connector. The solder flows as you seal to the wires... very cool and the best of both worlds.
I hear you Mike .
keep up the good work bro ,you're a very good Tech!!
You have an extremely talented Knack of troubleshooting- very impressive!!
Thanks MrRichBiker! :)

Thank you for sharing the troubleshooting skills!
Thank you for watching me share my troubleshooting skills Ron :)

One of the best videos spot on
Great job Mike.

Excellent troubleshooting, I wish all mechanics where like this and not just shotgunning and replacing parts, thanks!
First time on your channel. Highly impressed!
This is a great video and very good work, thanks.

The copper wires oxidize and get the black look.. great video, hopefully I can figure out my ABS issue on my Tahoe ...THANKS!!
Damn professional. Ladies... this is a pro. He'll be more expensive. But worth it.
lol thanks!

excellent video.
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
looking forward to the video. I hope I have the necessary "tools" to diagnose.
Hoping for some warmer weather since I will be doing it on my driveway.
best how to video i have seen in a long time. i felt like i was watching a tv show. i guess i was haha thank you so much!
Thank you so much!!!

Thanks again Juergen!

comprehensive harness testing...great job
Hey Ron, thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed the video!

Very good! Like the certainty of the repair!
Thanks for watching!

oh and i meant to tell you at time frame 19:50 you had a short bleep of a left front wheel speed of 1:2428 i guess you missed it though it was quick. but you already had the problem solved at that point, your good !!!
Good eye! I guess at that frame there must have been a quick connection in the circuit. Thanks again for watching and commenting! I really glad you've enjoyed this video :)

Dang that is a great compact Fluke, and with a magnet in the case too - brilliant
Fantabulous! Awesome real world troubleshooting.
good professional work Mike
Hey Gearhead0800, thanks!!!

Thank you very much :)

very logic and simple troubleshooting best of luck hope to see more video. thanks keep rocking bro..
Actualy, GM recomends NOT using solder on anything other than circut boards as it decreases the resistence gain...and the wire is design like that to give it a helicoil to reduce RF interfierence...thats why the wire is twisted like that.
Excellent explanation ever I have seen thank you so much sir
Thank you very much!

Been having intermittent abs & traction control problem on my 2010 Chevy avalanche...
Read the code...left wss changed the hub thinking it was the sensor but upon inspection found out the connector was repaired now I have to do the same as you and trace the wire back to see if it’s any tears further up
Sounds like fun :)

I just recently purchased some heat shrink and solder but connectors that I think will work great in areas like this. I hope they will work better then crimped ones.
Thank you Excellent diagnostics!
Nice Wells shirt Mike. Would look good wearing it in my shop!
Hey James, thanks! Too bad I don't give these ones away, huh!?

Great video! I'd check the other side harness too. It's probably not far behind
Hey Bob, great point! Thanks for watching.

Great Vid thanks, The dealer next door would have charged me $2000 to replace the whole ABS unit, LOL when it was just a simple wire harness issue.
